Mindy Kaling in Topshop at the 2014 PaleyFest “The Mindy Project” Event

Posted on March 26, 2014

Miss Mindy gives T Lo another reminder that they should never choose the topics for the day based on thumbnails of pictures. There’s always some little detail you see when you get to the full-sized shot that you just KNOW is going to be your downfall.

Can you guess what it is?

We’ve always said you can do a cropped top on the red carpet, but it depends on the top, the person wearing it, and the event they’re attending (which is usually what all style questions come down to: garment, person, venue). This is a place where an outfit like this is perfectly welcome. And Mindy could work a crop top, we’re sure. It’s just that we question whether this is the one and wonder what this look is really doing for her. The skirt’s waist is a little high and the sleeves look flat-out too small on her. If everything was proportional and fit a little better we think she could work this, but the more we look at it, the more that top just looks too damn small on her.

Beautiful fabric, though. Love the earrings. Wish she’d get her hair off her shoulders. And we suspect her makeup looks great in person, but it almost never looks right for pictures. Too heavy and too shiny.

I hate it when my hair sticks in my lip gloss!

      • kimmeister

That’s my #1 beef with lip gloss. I only use it if my hair is pulled back!

    • imspinningaround

I have a feeling I’ll be drawn and quartered for this, but you know what the top reminds me of? The little short sleeve crop tops Indian ladies wear under their saris. Yes, the proportions are all off, but if you read this outfit as a quiet little nod to her heritage, it’s kind of sweet.

      • Mim McDonald

Nope, that’s what I was going to say, it reminds me of that.

      • teensmom99

I was about to post this same comment. It’s interesting to me that lately she’s hinting at Indian clothes in some of her style choices–especially because she gets criticized for not including enough women and/or people of color in her show and her answer is “Hello!? Look at me. What am I?”

      • StarburstLady

Yeah, I think that’s an intentional reference– the embellished fabric fits with that, too. Looking at it with that in mind, I think she looks quite nice. And for once her hair and make-up look great.

      • butterflysunita

There’s something about the color and pattern that reminds me of a sari or salwaar kameez too.

        • P M

The top seems to be cut like a blouse – look at those sleeves! – and the bottom seems to be shaped like a kameez. That could be why.

      • MartyBellerMask

I can see that. She’s got a good start then– but the top doesn’t fit, and the skirt is unflattering. I would have loved to see this work on her.

But oh don’t get me started on those shoes!!

      • kipper

I was thinking the exact same thing – and I think she looks beautiful here,

      • Vanessa

And I’ve been told that wearing the sleeves of those tops tight on the upper arm is considered sexy, so I think it is a preference.

      • barbarienne

That was exactly my reaction. Those blouses with saris are usually so tight! (Which is why I wear a different kind of shirt under mine.)

      • marlie

I don’t feel like that was the goal/inspiration here, but I definitely can see it.

      • alyce1213

I think so too, and I think she meant it that way.

        • demidaemon

I can understand that. I just wish it was a bit better fitted with a different skirt shape.

      • butterflysunita

Now that I look at it again it looks like the blouse on a choli lenga.

    • gayle

the color is beautiful but the top is too small. If this had been a dress instead of seperates I would like it much more. She could definately rock a crop top but you are right that this is not the one for her.

    • decormaven

Skirt waist is too high and defeats purpose of crop top- just makes top look unbalanced. Gorgeous color on her, though.

      • teensmom99

Actually I think the new look for crops is a high waist and I like that. I think if the top fit better, the high skirt would work.

    • Scimommy

That eye makeup makes her practically unrecognizable. The more I look at her face, the less sure I am that it is, in fact, Mindy Kaling.

      • TerryMH

I don’t think it’s the makeup. She looks like she had some face work done. She’s sporting some new duck lips it seems. Looking at other photos of her compared to this one makes me think that’s not all. This makes me sad. Part of her appeal is her unconventional beauty, getting a lead in a sitcom in Hollywood no less. If she becomes just a dark skinned version of a typical Hollywood sitcom actress then she losing that which made her look so refreshing.

I swear if Lena Dunham gets Botox next, I’ll just scream.

        • Scimommy

          What? NOOOOOO!

        • SayWhaaatNow

No way. I don’t see it. I think if anything she’s just wearing a darker lip that complements her skin tone more and gives the illusion of fuller lips.

        • Zaftiguana

I really don’t think so, they just used a lighter shade/hand on the inside of her lips to make them look fuller.

        • roche

No, you’re right. She’s botoxed her forehead and it’s wiped all the lovely personality off her face. Oh well, the good news is that it wears off. I have no problem with her outfit except that the skirt’s waistline looks uncomfortable.

        • Jamma

Was watching her on Today this morning and I noticed *something*. Can’t put my finger on it but it made me think she had something done. :-(

      • Judy_S

Looking at her, I thought she was channeling Liz Taylor.

    • SayWhaaatNow

I actually thought she was wearing a belt (like she usually does) in the first picture and was going to question that choice for this outfit until TLo said it was actually a crop top. I think it’s awesome that she went for a crop top dress, but yes, if the top was just a smidge larger and the skirt was not as high, she would have looked excellent.

All that notwithstanding, I still think she looks pretty good. She should rock jewel tones more often.

    • http://www.beautifymylifeblog.com Jessica

Terrible. This is making her look so much bigger than she actually is. I’m all for being proud of your figure, but this is doing her no favors. And I really want to hand her some blotting sheets.

    • MarissaLG

The outfit’s very cute but it just doesn’t fit. Too bad.

    • Vicky

Those oil slicks are a little strange, but I love the colour on her. Had the proportions been right, this outfit would’ve been amazing in my eyes.

    • SewingSiren

Other than the tourniquet like sleeve, I think it’s a good look for her. I dislike that her shoes are sticking their tongue out at me.

    • ~Heather

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer shoes.

      • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

My eyes just snap to those toes!

    • SugarSnap108

Too bad, because the color/fabric look great. What’s going on with the neckline in the back? That and the bad fit are giving her a hunch back.

    • crash1212

Beautiful color and fabric. Skirt is doing nothing for her figure and the top is too small. Also, those shoes? They are ugly.

    • ashtangajunkie

Terrible fit on what could have been a great little outfit for her.

    • Nancer

I think she is fabulous, and I love this color on her. Yes, there are definitely fit issues, but I totally get why she wanted to wear it; it’s a beautiful outfit. Tailoring, Mindy, tailoring! It’s our best friend.

    • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

Gurl, no. This would be so cute on her if it was a dress. And her make-up looks thick and greasy like you could scrape it off with a palette knife.

    • Mazenderan

Colour suits her well – but the shape is unflattering. Plus, I’m tired of the messy hair and shiny skin.

    • Courtenay P

those shoes deserve to burn in eternal hellfire.

    • Alyssa_T_Robot

      pssht. get it girl!

    • Mismarker

This is obviously the red carpet for the annual PaleyFest blood drive. And her tight sleeves are serving double duty as tourniquet.

    • Kim Elmore

      Also: blotting papers

    • Agatha Guilluame

I dunno where the breakdown in communication was with her team but clearly she asked for the Freida Pinto and her makeup artist gave her the Sammy Sosa. I’m not here for it.

      • Kitten Mittons

This cracked me up, even though I don’t mind her makeup here. Hilarity.

    • Gatto Nero

The top is too small — it’s pulling at the shoulders.
And those shoes will give me nightmares.

    • NinjaCate

Was gonna mention the makeup! She always looks so shiny in pictures. What is that about?

    • B_C_J

The fabric is very beautiful & it compliments her. I think her eyes are also very beautiful. However, I would have preferred to see a dress & not two pieces. I would have adjusted the bodice & pulled her hair into a sleek ponytail.

    • Janet B

Gorgeous, except for the poor fit.
Oh, and I don’t like her shoes.

    • Anathema_Device

In this case, the crop doesn’t look intentional. It just looks like she is wearing an ill fitting top. She often gets about 80 percent of the way there with her looks.

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

      OMG, I thought it was a belt….

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

OMG, I thought it was a belt.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I’m not liking the pattern on this fabric at all — looks like embroidered bats.

      • Jacob Bowen

I was JUST thinking that because I’m wearing the matching black bat earrings!

    • Jacob Bowen

Unintentional Crop Top. Or at least, that’s what you should say Mindy, cause it is NOT flattering.

    • marlie

First, Mindy’s makeup is ALWAYS too-heavily caked on. Her makeup artist needs to be fired.
Second, the cropped top is doing her body NO favors. It’s making her torso look too short, and then that skirt (which is too long anyway), is making her bottom half look too long.
Third, the red accent in the shoe is distracting.
Fourth, the fabric on the dress seems a little Christmas-y.

    • Hysterectomypants

I’m surprised to say it, but I think she actually looks pretty great here–the best I’ve seen her look in a while. I know the makeup’s heavy, but I think it really suits her somehow. I even think the dress is working for her, even if the fit of the top could be improved. I don’t know what’s happening. I feel like I shouldn’t like this.

    • stubbornthoughts

100% agree. This is poorly fitted for her, but I love it in theory.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I like the colour but the fabric looks really bulky and uncomfortable. If you are going to design something for the red carpet you should at least make sure that your lady stars can put their hand on their hip without it doing weird things at the shoulder.

    • Kappyapp

I can’t stop looking at the shoes and cringing. Looks like someone shoved a red Jenga block into the toe.
I absolutely love this color on her though – gorgeous.

    • Juniper

From a distance – in thumbnail – I wondered if it was a drag version of MK. Which would be *amazing* and all sins would be forgiven. Reality, you are not my friend this morning.

    • http://www.paolathomas.com/ PaolaT

I like it. With the cropped top and the ornate fabric it seems to be giving a nod to traditional Indian saris but in very contemporary way.

    • MilaXX

I wish the top fit better. The skirt doesn’t bother me except the waistband looks a teeny bit too tight. I also hate the shoes. Mindy’s makeup never seems to take into account print media.

    • MW

Intriguing how her face is about 15 shades away from the rest of her body…

      • Gatto Nero

Her makeup is always too orange.

    • Penguin Mom

Don’t like the crop top, either, but what is making my eyes twitch is that little pop of red on the shoes sticking out beneath her tootsies. It’s distracting. If you have to have the red, then why not go with red toenails to match? I think that would actually make it less distracting.

    • Jackie4g

Her face looks greasy. Not a great make up job. The fabric is nice and I like the shoes. The top looks like she should have gone up a size.

    • pepper76

She’s the same height as me and we’re both too short for a crop like that. it’s cutting her in half. LOVE her, though. Beautiful color on her. Take away the crop and take a few inches off of the skirt and we’re in business.

    • Tracy_Flick

I love her so much. I wish she would have a sit-down with Tina Fey about funny-lady glamour.

    • prisma

It looks like she has one giant red toenail. Weird.

    • Imasewsure

Hate heavy makeup on her beautiful face…

    • Kate Andrews

Yeah. That makeup is always too shiny. I want better for Mindy!

    • quiltrx

This top plus the high waist of the skirt is really making her look stumpier than she is. I like the interesting fabric, but the fit of both pieces just isn’t right, and not flattering.

    • Jessica Freeman

It’s all wrong proportionally. And the crop tops this time around seem to be crop tops for the sake of being one. This fabric was meant to be a dress with a belt.

    • EEKstl

The fabric is amazing and if these pieces were the right size on her I think she could have pulled this off. As it is, not flattering.

    • French_Swede

I thought that was a belt. Ugh.

    • Claire

I cannot with those shoes. At first glance I thought she had some sort of open wound on her feet.

      • alyce1213

Why would anyone even make a shoes that looked like that?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I know that the crop top is a trend for this year, but this one is not working for Ms. Kaling.

    • Granny panties

This out fit is way too small, she looks bursting at the seams. I bet in person her beautiful smile would distract me though.

    • Ann VerWiebe

      I thought it was a flesh-colored belt!

    • Qitkat

I have to agree about the makeup. Do not care for the earrings, they look like two grommets hooked together.
And the fabric of the dress says ’20 Thousand Leagues Under the Sea with Oil Droplets’ to me, although I love the deep green background. A whole different dress style would have suited her better.

    • ThaliaMenninger

      Bad crop. Bad peep toe.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I always want to blot her lovely shiny face. And I actually love this look on her.

    • P M

If she was going to go this far, she might as well have worn a sari. That’s the great beauty of that garment – it’s got vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. (In other words, you’re covered regardless of what shape you are :D. And I’m brown, so I should know :)

    • P M

There’s also some Silk Smitha action going on with the makeup and not in a good way.

    • Molly

Her shoes look like they’re barfing out her toes.

    • http://vogueworthyy.wordpress.com/ Anastacia

I think this could have been ten times better by doing a simple up do, getting rid of the earrings, and re-fitting the top half as the sleeves look a bit small. This outfit had the potential to be great but didn’t quite reach its best.

    • Danielle

MAJOR props for her wearing a crop top, but the fit is just a skosh off. I still love her.

    • Zaftiguana

No lie, at first glance, I thought the strip of abdomen was a belt.

It’s definitely not a perfectly executed look, but I’m feeling it all in all. And I like the eye make-up. It’s always her base that looks too thick, I don’t know what that’s about. The overly tight sleeve is the biggest problem, but I’d give the whole thing a solid B.

    • Ugly

      Mindy, why?

    • SierraDelta

Well, so far today the uncles have already written everything I would have said. Maybe I’ll just have a Mute Midweek Moment today.

    • heuristicvalue

Good for you, girl. You rock that stupid matching-crop-top-and-skirt trend that will hopefully die very, very soon. She doesn’t look any stupider than anyone else in that trendy crap.

    • Suse

Great color on her. That’s all I’ve got.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

If the skirt was a floor-length maxi in a soft fabric, I think the crop top would work (albeit with different sleeves). As it is, the proportions aren’t working on her. It is a hard look to pull off if you are short and curvy, but I love her for trying.

    • Reality TV Casting

aside from the shininess thats some of the best mindy makeup ive ever seen
