Matthew McConaughey in Dolce&Gabbana at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Posted on March 02, 2014

We’ve come a long way in learning to accept Matthew’s “Vegas Pimp” style aesthetic; helped in no small part by two back-to-back amazing performances in Dallas Buyer’s Club and True Detective. And we were almost ready to ride that wave of goodwill right into accepting this look. Yes, even the crunchy hair, orange skin and Saturday Night Fever of it all.

But we canNOT sign off on those shoes with that suit. That’s a bridge too far, Matthew. They’re great shoes, but they belong with a pair of jeans, not your poop-brown disco suit.

On the other hand, we’ll be disappointed if he shows up in a plain black tux tonight.

  • “On the other hand, we’ll be disappointed if he shows up in a plain black tux tonight.”

Oh hell yes. I vote mulberry velvet.

    • ralish

Mulberry velvet sounds lovely. Now I want to upholster my armchair in it 🙂

      • kmk05

…Does that mean you want to upholster your chair in him too? (I may have been watching too much Hannibal…)

        • ralish

Okay, I’m creeped out, and officially over mulberry velvet!

          • kmk05

The nature of that Hannibal series!

I am ardently wishing for something outrageously Vegas-style tonight, though, especially if he does win.

        • ShaoLinKitten

Hannibal is the craziest show ever. It sent me screaming back into vegetarianism– I’m not even kidding.

          • kmk05

I can only watch it if I squint and eat 4 hours beforehand.

          • I need to hide behind a cushion.

          • kmk05

Is it bad to confess that (if I manage to remember) I record it so I can eventually fast forward?

        • JasmineAM

The part with the ear this week made me cringe SOOOOO hard.

    • formerlyAnon

I DO hope he goes with velvet over shine. He’s gone to the shine well often enough, lately.

    • Lucía Gavello

One of those velvet flower jackets from the Dolce&Gabbana Fall-Winter RTW… If he can pull one of those off I’ll forgive him for these shoes.

    • Miss Ruth

Mulberry I can go with. As long as it isn’t shiny (see: Brodian Douchbaggery).

    • MilaXX

This would be the perfect time to break out a brocade jacket. He just needs to dial back the fake tan a few notches.

      • That would be so amazing. Smoking jacket, cravat, patent shoes.

  • Janet B

A “pop of color” gone too far.

  • Danielle

When your fake tan matches your suit color, it’s time to rethink.

  • kmk05

No no no. He needs to take a shower and get rid of both the gunk in his hair and the orange on his face. It is clashing with his Vegas Pimp suit.

  • decormaven

Too bad! I like the suit on him, as well as the shoes, but not together. He can wear rompers and come in rolling a hoop tonight for all I care. Just get the award!

  • lexilexi

I have disliked him forever…. UNTIL True Detective. After watching him in that, I saw DBClub… OMG. He’s become an actor. A serious actor.

    • Little_Olive

Am I crazy to want to add Magic Mike to his good record? :S

      • lexilexi

I haven’t seen that one because it’s pre-True Detective… but I have heard it’s okay… and b/c of my new found appreciation for him, I may give it a go! Thanks Little_Olive!

        • grasshack

He was great in “The Lincoln Lawyer” (& William H. Macy was in it, too – another great actor.)

I also really enjoyed “The Paperboy” – it got panned by reviewers, but I loved it – what a juicy movie! (Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, John Cusack, Macy Gray!)

      • demidaemon

No, he was pretty much one of the stand outs for me in Magic Mike. Channing impresses with his range, Alex with his prettiness, but MM really showed how someone BECOMES a character. He stole every frickin scene he was in.

  • clatie

he looks like he smells very… much.

    • He reminds me of someone who used to wear a lot of YSL Jazz.

  • understateddiva

You would not NEED a pop of color if your suit did not match your tan. Sir, that’s not your suit.

  • lizajane1776

Oh, come on! They are Blue Suede Shoes!

  • @Biting Panda

    Oh sweet Jesus. Of course.

  • xmixiex

He is smokin and brilliant on true detective y’all.

  • ashtangajunkie

    Hilariously bad. Bless.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I think the shoes would be fine if the shirt wasn’t black. Does that make any sense?

That said, I am deeply in love with Rust Cohle and think McConaughey should win all the awards this year. All of them <3

    • MilaXX

The color isn’t the only problem, it’s the shoe style that clashes as well. Those shoes with a pair of jeans or a more causal pair of slacks could work. With a dressy, shiny suit they are ever going to work no matter what color shirt he wears with them.

      • ShaoLinKitten

Yeah, suede is not what the doctor ordered, but neither is a shiny brown suit. I’m saying that was really offends me is a brown suit with a black shirt and electric blue shoes. The materials used are also offensive but those are secondary to me. Like I said, if somehow he was able to coordinate the shirt better with the shoes, I might just shrug and say, “Forget it, Jake. It’s McConaughey.”

  • formerlyAnon

He needed a shave as well as not-blue shoes for this to work for me.

  • smayer

Sigh… He’s going to age like Robert Redford and turn into a wallet.

    • MilaXX

I disagree. I think Robert has aged fairly naturally. I love his wrinkles and crackled face. Matt’s going to look like tanned & dried leather.

  • Those D&G shiny suits are getting a lot of attention….never would have thought that would happen.

Why is it so hard to find shoes that complement a look? Guys and girls seem to have trouble in equal numbers.

  • SRQkitten

No. Just no. Unlike Jared, who’s managing to stay true to his style muse while ramping it up for the awards marathon, this is just wrong. And MMC, who has managed to do some credible fashion modeling, ought to know better.

  • majorbedhead

This is what I imagine Woody Wooderson to have evolved into. He’s not standing outside the arcade anymore, but he still looks like he’s trying to pick up those high school girls.

I’m only just now watching the first episode of True Detective. It’s giving me the wiggins.

    • MilaXX

True Detective is better than I expected and I’m not one of the ones trying to decipher the whole yellow king mystery. I’m just going along for the ride.

  • Viviennne

poop brown disco suit – ahahhahahahhahhaa – a crinkly old Texan in blue suede shoes ….. the genres are making me dizzy!

  • Pennymac

  • Tricia

It’s like he’s making it as hard as humanly possible for people to like him. Every time I watch True Detective I think, “man, I actually like Matthew Mcconaughey!” And then I see him on here and I have to start all over again.

    • Sobaika

Did anyone catch his rambling douchey speech at the Independent Spirit Awards? Because if that is ANY indication he is inherently unlikable. Maybe he’s using his clothing to do a service, warning people before they get too close.

      • MilaXX

I didn’t even bother trying to find whatever station was carrying the Independent Spirit Awards. I figured I needed the awards energy for today.

        • Lisa_Co

They were on the IFC station. They are still showing the show today. And that was some rambling speech.

      • Little_Olive

        No! Spill, please!

        • Sobaika

See if you can find it on youtube. I’m probably biased but he seemed to be trying very hard to appear humble. He also spoke for several minutes longer than most other winners. All around douchey.

  • I don’t believe he could pull that off even with the right shoes. It looks ridiculously costumey and the black shirt is all wrong.

  • boweryboy

    What is wrong with him?

    • Sarah

He is dressing an idea of himself that he has, and not his ACTUAL self. Pitfall #1, if’n you ask me.

  • IowaKitten

20 points for the use of the phrase “poop-brown disco suit”. 🙂

  • TigerLaverada

He is SO GOOD in True Detective that I am currently forgiving him even this outfit.

  • AmeliaEve

Matthew McConaughey and Lupita Nyong’o, founders of the Inappropriate Blue Shoe Club.

  • PastryGoddess

your skin should not match your clothes

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Agree-the shoes just do not beling with this suit.

  • So, did he go to the spray tan place with a swatch from his suit and request the “dyed to match” package?

  • mrspotts66

please let him shave, mr/miss/mrs stylist. please?
    loving the poop bronze suit.
    loving the blue suede shoes.
    just not together.
but he really needs to shave.

  • MannahattaMamma

Stylist query: should one’s tan match the exact shiny shade of one’s suit? Asking for a friend.

  • I’m sorry, this look has me laughing so hard I can’t possibly hate.

  • Jacob Bowen

LUPITA GOT TO HIM! The blue shoe disease strikes AGAIN!!!!!!

  • MilaXX

    UGH he Lupita’d the shoes

    • Gatto Nero

Wow — you verbed her name!
Well it was bound to happen.

  • Little_Olive

Strangely, his current haggardness plays well against the cut, color and fabric of the suit, making me almost accept it. A young, plump man would have looked like a Hershey’s kiss.
The shoes unfortunately go directly against the momentum created between his face and the suit.

    Oh, and wrong shirt.

  • Evan

Does he have a contract with Dolce&Gabanna? Cause he always wears them.

    • SRQkitten

I think he’s modeled for them. You’d think they’d want to have some investment in how he’s wearing the goods. Don’t think this would be doing much by way of sales for them unless they’re trying to corner the douche market,

  • lose the shoes and the orange skin, and of course the stubble (always), and i’ll go for it. he is an acting god!

  • desertsweetpea

  • His skin almost matches his suit. Worst color combination ever, combining orange skin, crispy shiny brown hair, sleazy shiny brown suit, and those fabulous daytime shoes. Sigh.

  • icm

His shoes look terrible with the suit, and actually in the last photo they make his feet seem unnaturally large. But I do not hate the shoes they would just look better with another outfit. And the suit! well it is very shiny .

  • That shoe/suit combination makes his legs look stumpy. Yikes.

  • Clash D

Everything was ‘kinda okay’ (he does a lot of shiny) until I scrolled down…to the SHOES! OMG! My gut reaction was to recoil and think – “quick, cut them off before they spread!!” Sorry Matthew.

  • Beto

LOVED IT! Want those shoes. His legs looks massive and sexy with those pants. Can i also point to the fact that his package even gain some shine here? 😉

  • MzzPants

Dammit, TLo, you did that on purpose. I’m scrolling along, accepting the douche-baggery, then BAM! FUG! I shouted ‘NO!’ Right out loud. And now my family is wondering if it’s time to make certain calls to certain homes.

  • ThaliaMenninger

It’s the face and hair I can’t handle. He reeks of aging lounge lizard who smoked and drank his way through several casinos before landing at the Silver Nickel in Reno, where he now holds the rope for the “showgirls” as they file past. I put “showgirls” in quotes because the SIlver Nickel can only afford a couple of septuagenarians who look worse than Matthew McConaughey. And, yes, I made up the Silver Nickel, so if there is a real gambling establishment in Reno named that, I apologize in advance.

  • quiltrx

I think Tony Ward needs to stage a D & G intervention with this one, and explain how these clothes work.
I cannot with his sloppy collar, face the color of the suit, and the “not here, honey” shoes.

  • Qitkat

Scrolling down, I started to laugh even before I got to the end of the post. So easy to figure out with this one what went off kilter. Quelle surprise!
I have backed way off my negative feelings about this guy. Such a damn amazing actor!

  • Columbinia

Sweet God in heaven, what is that? Blue, orange, brown and black! Did anyone think about this palette? And why the orange face? (Note that the hands aren’t orange.)

  • halleygee

I actually burst out laughing as I scrolled down! Those SHOES!

  • OffToSeeHim

I’m not trying to be mean, but could he be ill? He looks terrible to me. Aside from what he’s wearing, I mean.Which is also truly, truly terrible.

    • kittentoes

I don’t get the warm feels for him. It…I would go into snarking. Suffice to say I live in an area where one can observe loads of deeply unhealthy folk, and thus I do not know why one would ever embrace the crunchy, greasy, deep orange fried look.

  • marlie

I hate the color of the suit, and I hate how shiny it is, and the shoes are awful with it, but the worst part is that he seems to need a shower. He just looks… greasy.

  • demidaemon

WHUT? This is all a NO to me. And he was doing so well there for a minute. *sniffles*

  • On anybody else, this is brown satin.
    On him, it’s “nude”.

  • Daktari100

Only he could pull this off. I would hate it on most people, but it suits him.

  • twocee

That is a whole lotta shiny going on there.

  • Alfred Cox

    I mean, girl. Really?

  • MaggieMae

Oh, he is so picking his own clothes. To my dismay, might I add.

  • venusvelvet

He’s kind of like the male version of Heidi – tight and shiny, at least. The bronze color isn’t doing him any favors, though, and the brown shirt is too heavy. Love that he tried the blue suede shoe, but I would’ve gone with a more subtle grey-black blue to complement the bronze instead of fighting it.
