Lizzy Caplan in Wes Gordon at the 2014 PaleyFest “Master of Sex” Event

Posted on March 25, 2014

Lizzy woke up after a late night out, realized what day it was, and said “Oh SHIT. I have to be at PaleyFest panel in like ten minutes!”

We’re guessing.

Lizzy Caplan the 2014 PaleyFest “Masters Of Sex” event at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California in a Wes Gordon dress paired with a Jimmy Choo clutch and Kurt Geiger pumps.

Girl.

Last night’s hair and makeup paired with a David’s Bridal special does not a chic look make. Go home and try again.

Masters of Sex. Didn’t really love it. The actors were all on their A game, but we found ourselves rolling our eyes at the script more than once due to the constant “We’re really challenging social norms in a repressive age here and that’s so totally important” manner of speaking the characters tended to engage in. Imagine if Peggy Olsen on Mad Men constantly said “I’m really blazing a trail for women here at a time of great discrimination” every episode. It was kind of like that. But Lizzy looks fabulous on the show and she does have pretty great chemistry with her co-star, Michael Sheen. We’re hoping season 2 is just a little more sophisticated in its storytelling.

Nighttime face, Second wedding dress, shoes from the 80′s. No bueno.
I never watched the show, For some reason the very title of the show bored me.

      • Qitkat

While it had its issues, and I almost didn’t watch it either, once I started, I was fascinated at this look into history that pre-dated the bulk of the women’s movement. I had never read any of the books on the subject. One of the interesting things is that the author of the book that the series is based on, is actively involved with the production, and quite often comments on Sepinwall’s blog about the show. It pushes the envelope of sex and nudity in a direction rarely seen even on cable, which is uncomfortable sometimes, but completely relevant to the story. You might like it more than you think. I always find that when there are a lot of mixed reactions to a show, that often means it’s worth deciding for yourself if it is your cuppa tea.

    • Flooolia

The thing about her is that she tends to look great in this stark-but-casual combo. So… resting on pretty (with a slight visible effort), I guess, but man is there a lot of natural pretty.

      • Glam Dixie

I’ve got to stop skimming the replies. I totally read that as Stank-but-casual. Not at all the same.

    • MartyBellerMask

Oh holy moly. Did anyone else see the thumbnail and think, “Ghost of Brittany Murphy!!” I mean, uncanny, right?? (ETA: Rest in Peace, Brit.)

    • Anna

Yikes, this is rough. Dress by way of the “Clearance: Bridal” section at Value Village. Today’s makeup looks like it was applied on top of last night’s makeup.

      • Fuchaforever

Omg did you say Value Village? I so miss Value Village in Hotlanta! :(

        • Anna

I’ve noticed they’re getting harder and harder to find, but yeah, many of my most obnoxious teenage ensembles were created from there.

        • largishbearishAtlish

but ‘hotlanta’ is sooooo 1980′s hun… (and love me some Value Village too- come hit the great thrifts shops in Roswell..)

    • Danielle

I had such high hopes for this D:

    • Glam Dixie

Justice of the peace wedding dress with some hastily applied lipstick and last nights hair. Woof.

      • snarkykitten

Swap the skirt for pants and you pretty much have what my mom wore to her courthouse wedding. (to be fair, INS WAS trying to deport my dad so they had to go for a quickie marriage but that’s a teal deer srry)

    • Sal

Sure looks better than when I get ready in 10 minutes…

    • In_Stitches

It (the show) is not the high art of Mad Men that it’s clearly trying to imitate. It had a couple discordant jokes that fought with the otherwise serious tone that it had established. Still, the acting is dynamite across the board and I’m invested in around half the characters’ stories, so I’ll tune in for season 2.

I’ll give her credit for making what looks like a wedding dress not look like a wedding dress at all, but the end result just isn’t working for me. I think it’s mainly the shoes that are killing me.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I love the show, but this is pretty bad. That hair looks very “I work from home” (and I know, because I work from home) The white is not flattering, but I could live with it if stopped before the flare and was a straight mini. But then again, i hate the accessories too. Okay, I kind of hate everything.

    • tereliz

I feel like in theory I should like this. Pretty dess, kicky shoes, edgy jewelry. But, just like the show, it’s all adding up to something not exactly likable. (Seriously, I hated almost every character except Allison Janney’s character and Master’s [soon to be ex] wife.)

      • Qitkat

This dress is not what you would think would be an automatic possible choice for this panel, it’s pretty but unsuitable. I do like the cool three finder ring though, and also think she wears that shade of lipstick exceptionally well.

Alison Janney kicked all the other women to the curb in her role. Which makes me sad to see her in Mom [only at the end right before the next show starts, because I don't watch it, although I'm glad she has the chops to play comedy] but I’m curmudgeonly because I hate most comedies on TV today. But she showed such depth and angst and strength in Masters of Sex that her scenes redeemed a lot of the issues of the show for me. I’m looking forward to the upcoming season.

The show pretty much dragged until Allison Janney appeared. The whole show seemed lighter and less claustrophobic with her on it.

    • Imasewsure

Perfect dress for a woman “of a certain age” at her second or third wedding. And red shoes do not always make the outfit, that is for sure

      • Sarah

A woman with exceptionally long arms of a certain age, it would appear.

        • Imasewsure

You are so right my friend… Maybe it was designed for Madonna so she could lay off the gloves for one (very special) day????

        • kimmeister

I scrolled back up to look, and only then did I just see her 3-finger ring.

    • decormaven

This looks like something a gal would wear back in the day for a special dinner out in anticipation of a tiny blue box’s appearance at the dessert course.

      • marlie

So a dress like this is what’s been holding me up?! I’m going shopping this afternoon, then! :P

      • Rhonda Shore

It reminds me of the dress Winona Ryder wore that Ethan Hawke called a “doily” in that 90s slacker movie, whose name escapes me at the mo…the one where they danced to “My Sharona” at a gas station.

        • decormaven

Reality Bites. A movie where I realized I was no longer the target demo.

          • Rhonda Shore

nor I, but I did like that My Sharona scene.

            • decormaven

Yes, watching them dance around the convenience store was probably one of the better moments in that flick.

    • Lilyan

I love her her and make up! Dress, not so much, too bland and night gowny..

    • what not

      Undead bride.

    • jdens

I enjoy the show, but agree it’s not as sophisticated (or as beautiful) as Mad Men. I don’t think it’s trying to be. I find Lizzy absolutely mesmerising in it.

      • Shawn EH

She’s going for that white/red Snow White thing, but c’mon, Lizzy, your color is really black!

    • LJCdoc

So is matching your lips to your shoes a thing now?

    • marlie

I’m always begging the ladystars to go bold with their lip colors, but this time it’s a disappointment, because the color is too harsh for her skin tone. And this is another dress with a really awkward hem length. Plus, the shoes are wrong. So no, not a fan of this look.

      • Jacob Bowen

The entire skirt on this look is awkward. The dress goes from body-con to full on drapes.

    • enchanted216

White is not her color. Love Masters of Sex! :)

    • Fuchaforever

      Uh this is bad

    • Rhonda Shore

That lipstick is not the right shade of red for Lizzy…great one para synopsis of a series, btw. Yay for brevity!

    • SewingSiren

I love it pretty much head to toe.

    • demidaemon

Yeah, no. Although I’m glad she has some facepaint on, even if it is last night’s.

    • B_C_J

The entire look is tired & dated.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Really?

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I see red lips and red shoes. She has melted into the backdrop. Love her, tho. I’ve seen her many times at UCB in LA participating in some comedy gigs. I still hold an eternal flame for ‘Party Down’ and want to believe she’s still heavily snogging Adam Scott behind a catering van in the Hollywood party of my fantasy.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I do like that lipstick though.

    • rhymeswithspoons

For what it’s worth, she said she’d been doing 5am hair makeup for the last week. Add to that the fact that the premiere date for season 2 is literally six months after the season 1 finale, which seems like a super tight schedule (and maybe the result of executive meddling?). It doesn’t excuse the lack of styling, but if I’d been pulling a schedule that frantic, I don’t think I’d be paying much attention to how I looked either.

    • KT

This doesn’t look half-assed to me as much as it just looks weird and wrong. The hair is awful, yes. I like her makeup, actually, but that dress is totally bizarre and looks like it came out of a vintage horror movie. Not excited about the shoes matching the lipstick. I really have no idea what she was going for with this look.

    • beebee10

Totally agree with you on MOS. Good acting and some lame plotting. Often it seems like the “we’re doing groundbreaking work” is merely a ploy to allow sex scenes. Showtime was never too classy.

    • FridaStaire

      Oh, honey.

    • lobsterlen

Does anyone remember Sean Young the “it” girl of the late 80s? This is who Lizzy is channeling here.

    • ShaoLinKitten

I’m relieved to hear you say that you didn’t love MoS. I thought I was just missing something because it failed to captivate me. Lizzy is totally sporting 80s teen movie hair.

    • MannahattaMamma

Yeah. That’s the dress you wear as a bride…to your second (or third) marriage.

    • melisaurus

That really is how sexologists talk though >.< In my experience.
