Lena Headey in Jenny Packham at the “Game of Thrones” Season 4 New York Premiere

Posted on March 19, 2014

She’s a black dress kind of gal. “I have to wear a dress? Fine. Get me something black.”

Lena Headey attends the “Game Of Thrones” Season 4 premiere in New York City in a Jenny Packham dress accessorized with an EF Collection ring and Rona Pfeiffer earrings.

Jenny Packham Fall 2013 Collection

Sure, we wish she’d embrace color and pattern more, but that seems like a silly pipe dream since she’s demonstrated quite consistently that fashion isn’t her bag. That makes us a little sad, though. She obviously has a flair for the dramatic (which is why this black dress works and that one didn’t). And like we always say to those all-black, no-nonsense types when they try to tell us they’re not into style, all-black and no-nonsense IS a style. You just have to learn how to interpret it over and over again. This just barely gets the job done for her, but it’s no great shakes. We’d bet there are plenty of things in her casual, day-to-day style that could easily be upscaled into something red carpet-ready. She gives off goth biker chick vibes in her personal style, with a tiny bit of rockabilly. Well, fine. She should probably stay away from the Jenny Packhams and the Dolce & Gabbanas, then. Get her in some DSquared2 or Betsey Johnson or Rodarte or Viktor & Rolf. There are plenty of designers doing edgy work that wouldn’t be difficult for her to wear. Wear combat boots and skull earrings, if that’s what gives you a twirl, but pair them with something fun, stylish and picture-ready.

Also: not cutting your hair with hedge trimmers would be nice.

That hair is a little too “Something About Mary” Lite to really look good, Cersei.

    • Emily Smith

I really love to hate Cersei. Also I’m really excited for the internet to explode (specifically non book readers) during season 4.

      • Claudia Berry

Right? Me too. I waited forever for my best friend to watch the Red Wedding and she kept putting it off until I finally got a call at 2am. I saw her number and smiled. She was so freaking out!

        • mmebam

I actually got in to the show late because I had read all the books, but it delighted me to no end to see all the non-book readers freak out over Facebook. I cannot WAIT to see them freak out over season four. Book 3 was certainly a game changer.

          • Emily Smith

The content they have for season four is amazing, so the reactions should be fun.

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

It’s going to be so. much. fun. And mayhem and violence. But still fun.

    • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

She’s so cool, also I like that she never seems to have some crazy nail art going on.

    • @Biting Panda

      Yeah, I’m digging Death Prom.

      • carnush

        Me too.

      • formerlyAnon

I was, but her head lost me. It needed to be tougher and more finished.

    • Leah Elzinga

she could easily pull off any outfit from the Rooney Mara/Girl with the Dragon Tattoo pole dance. She would KILL that severe black and white shizz.

    • misstressofsylar

I want to see her in something sleek and slinky. Lena in a poofy skirt seems somehow wrong.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Love the dress. Now she just has to look into lipstain and a hairbrush.

    • Janet B

She can do better than this.
You can go your own way, Helena Bonham Carter does it all of the time.

    • MilaXX

Maybe it is her choice of designers, but so far everything she wears just seems to looked frumped up. Why is this dress that looks so good on the model all wrinkly and dumpy looking on her? I don’t even dislike her hair but the dress looks like she pulled it out the bottom of a duffle bag.

      • mlle

I think it’s just that the model has more flattering lighting. You see the weird wrinkling in the skirt on Lena because she’s standing somewhere brighter.

        • MilaXX

Look at the top of the dress. It’s crisp and neat on the model and disheveled looking on Lena.

          • mlle

I still think the skirt could be wonkily constructed, but you’re right about the fit of the top… there’s fabric bunching beneath the bodice. It seems weird, since she’s always struck me as someone tall, but I guess she doesn’t have a model length torso.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I think this proves Lena Headey can roll out of bed and be red carpet acceptable. (I love her.)

    • Erica

Speaking as another black dress kind of gal (if the small collection of gowns in my closet is good evidence), I like this black gown. Not the hair, of course, and she needs more jewelry, but the dress is pretty cool.

    • appliquer

      Can’t with the tats.

      • cocohall

Isn’t that funny. I kinda love her tats. Which surprised me, as I despise the arm tats that other Lena (Dunham) has. But these look well place to me and the ink is pretty. But each to their own, yes? Maybe I’m just in a charitable mood, I like the whole look even the wonky hair.

        • Kitten Mittons

Yes, I just see the tats as accessories to the whole look. With the hair, they give it all an edge that I’m just digging.

          I generally like tattoos, though.

    • marlie

You know, I sort of like this. The dress is doing all of the work (and it’s not that much), but she still looks good, in a Lena Headey sort of way. No other ladystar could wear this and not look completely half-assed.

      • fursa_saida

I feel the same way. Something about her presence is making this work for me. She somehow found the intersection of looking good and appearing to not give a shit that I find endearing instead of infuriating.

        • marlie

Exactly. And, she really doesn’t seem to give a shit. It’s not an affectation that she puts on in front of the cameras.

    • barbarienne

I thought maybe the hair was because it was very windy, but then the dress would be in the wind too.

Another of the Inhumanly Gorgeous Brigade not doing anything with it.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE SWAROVSKI GONE? :(

Awards season is over, so we get zero sparkle? How long are we to be deprived in this manner? :/

      • Kent Roby

I’m stealing “Where have All the Swarovski Gone” as the title of my memoire that I may or may not write one day.

      • Donna Tabor

They are at the new Mormon temple in Gilbert, Arizona. Honest to Jesus, there are some bajillion of them in chandeliers in that place.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

        Laura Prepon got them all.

And now I am channelling Peter, Paul & Mary:
Where have all the swarovski gone, long time passing?
Where have all the swarovski gone, long time ago?
Where have all the swarovski gone?
Laura Prepon picked them, every one.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

      • decormaven

        My kingdom for a Swarovski!

    • Rhonda Shore

And wear some dark lipstick for Pete’s sake!!!

    • mlle

      Someone buy her a hairbrush.

Something about her facial features reminds me of Kate Winslet.

    • Danielle

Do you think she regrets that butterfly tattoo?

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

I like the bit of grandeur to the dress, appropriate for Game of thrones for sure.

    • Kim Albrechtsen

At least this is better than what she wore to the 300 premiere…ehh.

    • Betsy

She’s like a modern day Lannister here! I don’t know. Maybe I’m transferring my intense love of GoT and letting that color all sense of logic, but she looks badass to me. Just how I want her.

    • CatherineRhodes

I love the dress, but the hair is insane. She looks like Winona Ryder’s character in “Girl Interrupted.” No, the girl-in-mental-ward look is not a good one.

    • Vaniljekjeks

Love it. All-black, no-nonsense has been my style for years.

    • V No Privacy

Could she spare a ring or bracelet or SOMETHING? Like really.

    • kt

I need her to embrace the Jada Pinkett/crazy post apocalyptic warrior vibe. those two would kill together- (literally?)

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

In my movie where Michelle Dockery and Miss Lupita play badasses, Jada Pinkett and Lena Headey can be their nemeses.

        • Pablo

Why do we have to include Jada? :(

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Because she is fierce and beautiful.

    • Lilak

Just grievous that the skirt and bodice aren’t nice and smooth (see runway presentation). And then the hacked up hair makes the entire look appear wrinkly, from head to toe — even kind of italicizes the slept-in-it effect. What a way to frame such a beautiful face ~ ! :-(

    • Sam Smith

This looks very half-hearted to me. I expect more from Cersei.

    • crash1212

I dunno, I kind of love this on her. It’s an interesting dress and her messed up hair is perfect with it. She looks pretty, comfy and venue appropriate to my eye. I don’t even mind that she doesn’t have one piece of jewelry on (maybe earrings, but can’t tell) – works for me.

    • flamingoNW

At least Helena does crazy hair with some panache

    • golden_valley

It looks like she slept in the dress, rolled out of bed and into the limo to go to this event. It explains the hair and makeup too.

    • random_poster

This is what happens when Edward Scissorhands is your barber.

    • Donna Tabor

What the hell is going on with her headey?

      • kimmeister

If I tried with all of my might, I don’t think I could get my hair to look that bad.

    • JR Labrador

She needs to borrow some of Emma Watson’s bobby pins.

    • Carleenml

in my dream mirror I look like her. all bone structure and big eyes and such.

    • Imasewsure

I cut my neighbor’s hair with hedge clippers once… did not go over well with the mom squad alas… and it looked a bit like our girl here… yipes

    • Amy D

Is she slouching? I can’t tell but i kinda wanna tell her “Stand up straight, you’re at a premier for heaven’s sake!”

    • quiltrx

If you want to have crazy hair, that’s cool, but just looking like you got out of a particularly rough night in bed is NOT working.
That’s a great dress, but there’s really no styling at all. If she doesn’t care about all this (which is fine, lots of stars don’t) then she needs to have a stylist do the fussing for her. It doesn’t look like she does at this point.

    • MsC

It reminds me of that nightmare Gwyneth Paltrow Oscars dress, the year Goop Went Goth.

    • jw_ny

someone got paid to do that to her head!

      • kimmeister

The person was probably working for Tonya Harding.

    • BlairBear

Did you just imply that Rodarte could design something fun, stylish, and picture ready ? Is that PR speak for tortured, awkward, and overworked. Oh and homesewn.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Is there a breeze, or is her hair just doing that?

    • Christina

LUV HER. Cersei is horrible but she’s my favorite character. Lena seems so cool and this dress is gorgeous on her, but I wish there was more oomph like a piece of jewelry or a bolder lip color. It’s just missing something.

    • Trickytrisha

The left side of her head looks like a medium sized black bird crashed on it and stuck. Love her face, and the dress. Don’t love the total lack of accessorizing.

    • LJCdoc

I’m sure she paid someone hundreds of dollars to cut her hair with a hedge trimmer FOR her.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Love the dress and it looks so good on her, but that unfinished head is taking the whole look down several notches. Also, some killer jewelry would be nice.

    • unbornfawn

The hair is horrible and a little more color in the lips wouldn’t hurt either. The dress is fine.

    • formerlyAnon

I think she reallly makes the dress work, in an “I am the Disney Princess who plays in a garage band and is kinda into extreme sports” way – but it all falls apart at her head. She needed to look tough and sleek, not ratty-haired and under-made-up.

      (edited for clarity, maybe)

    • FridaStaire

No, there is something grand and wonderful about her in this dress – Rapunzel ditches the bleach and hacks off her locks.

    • SierraDelta

Ugh. This reminds me of that saggy-boob Gothic number that Gwynnie wore to the Oscars in the early 2000s.

    • gefeylich

I hate her so much as an actress it’s hard to be unbiased about this, but I do like the dress (on the runway model). Headey is certainly thin enough to wear it. Her tattoos aren’t too heinous.

Her hair, however, looks like a rat’s nest (my grandmother’s biggest slam), but I think that was intentional.

    • Yolanda13

Her Queen of the Damned look is wearing a little thin. And stay away from the hedge clippers indeed.

    • Camille Chapman

The hair makes me very sad.
