Jessica Pare in Roksanda Ilincic at the 2014 PaleyFest “Mad Men” Panel

Posted on March 24, 2014

In our imaginary version of Hollywood (wherein all the stars are portrayed by various alumnae of RuPaul’s Drag Race), Jessica woke up in a heart shaped bed in a silk pegnoir trimmed with maribou, took off her pink, quilted sleep mask, daintily picked up the morning newspaper from the silver tray offered by her semi-naked manservant, saw the pictures of Anne Hathaway wearing a very similar dress from the same designer, and promptly flew into a mascara-streaked Champagne flute-throwing ragegasm.

Jessica Pare attends the 2014 PaleyFest “Mad Men” panel held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California in a Roksanda Ilincic dress paired with Anita Ko chain earrings.

Roksanda Ilincic Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

Alas, the world is never as colorful as the one in our heads, so we’ll have to just shrug, sigh, and point out that, like Anne, she paired this dress with terrible shoes. Then again, the look book isn’t offering much in the way of options on that front. Also: this hem’s too long. Sorry to be such a repeating GIF about it, but lately it’s all “Hem too long! Wrong shoes! RAAAAA!!!!” around here. Can’t be helped. The celebrity red carpet breezes through more short-lived and ill-advised style trends than your average middle school cafeteria.

One small comfort for Jessica – her lipstick is better than Anne’s!

      • yethica

Not by much… I will never understand orange lipstick as an honest serious fashion choice when one is not trying to look like a character from Cirque du Soleil.

    • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

Could have helped to let it out like a qaurter of an inch at the hips and taken the hem up to the knee.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Would like to see Christina Hendricks in this one. Minus the three inches off the hem, that is.

    • barbarienne

I like this version better than Ms. Hathaway’s, but the cut and cascading bit make Ms. Pare look a bit “broad in the beam” as my mother would say. (Abetted by the dress being a skosh too small.) It’s definitely the dress, because the model is similarly afflicted.

Dear designers: ain’t nobody wants to have their hips made wider in today’s Western world. And certainly not on just one side. There’s a reason “panniers” is always plural.

      • demidaemon

I dislike this version more than Anne’s, for exactly the reasons that you stated.

    • your face

Love everything from neck up. What a beautiful lady.

But seriously, this dress is ugly.

    • JulieTy

“Sorry to be such a repeating GIF about it, but lately it’s all “Hem too long! Wrong shoes! RAAAAA!!!!” around here. ”

      Dearest Nephews;
Could you please record a real GIF of this? I’m sure I speak for the rest of the BKs when I say we would cherish it forever.
      Love,
      Julie

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Can you imagine what a great ring tone that would make for your phone?

      • KateShouldBeWorking

I kinda want TLo to write it but Tim Gunn to read it.

      • ushoda

        gosh i hate her teeth

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

      Patent leather baby puke shoes?

      • 3boysful

Seriously. I can hardly look at the dress because I am appalled that someone thought those shoes complemented this dress.
And I hate the origami dress.

    • nannypoo

I hate this dress and she looks like she doesn’t like it much either. I also hate the shoes, the purse, her hair and her makeup. But the model looks ridiculous, so I think it’s fair to say she looks better than the model.

    • MilaXX

I like this version better than Anne’s but the shoe is all wrong. That said if they had to go head to head, I’d give the win to Jessica.

      • lexilexi

The shoes may be wrong on Jessica, but Anne’s were even wronger.

        • Rhonda Shore

          I disagree, at least Anne’s matched color-wise. These don’t.

    • tereliz

I think she looks better in this dress than Anne looked in hers, though it’s not a high bar to clear. Anne’s dress was hideous!

    • FrigidDiva

So…another trend is to match your eyeshadow color to your shoes? Maybe it’s just my computer, but her eyeshadow looks yellowish/brown and gives her a jaundiced look. I do like the color of her dress MUCH better than Anne’s. I think that for this dress, shoes matching to her belt would have actually been a pretty good look, or black.

    • golden_valley

That table cloth got sewn into my waistline look has got to stop. Please ladies! Boycott that look!

    • Danielle

My feet are screaming FOR her.

    • Bozhi

I would have gone with a pewter or grey shoe. I sure would not have worn the shoes the model has on.

      • Rand Ortega

        Spot. On.

        • demidaemon

          EXACTLY.

      • Sarah

I do like those model shoes, but for casual wear. They are nifty, on their own.

        • demidaemon

To me, they look like house slippers. Which, therefore, should never leave the house.

    • Sophie

Love the blue print! I do prefer Anne’ more vibrant colours, though. The shoes are awful and look like they really hurt.

    • Anna

Have not really enjoyed any of these Roksanda Ilincic frocks. My eyes keep being drawn to the purple and black oxfords, however, which I’m coveting hard.

    • Amel

Yes the shoes are wrong, but not AS wrong as Anne’s. And her hair’s better. But that newsprint gray against the white background kind of grates.

    • Rand Ortega

Is this the new Gucci Peacock Dress that we can’t swing a dead cat without it being on a starlet? I’m sick of it already.

    • Kent Roby

She’s very pretty, but her hairstyle seems to be more mature than her 33 years. Also; I dread being subjected to every color combination of this same dress.

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I can’t wait for prom season in Appalachia so they can roll out the mossy oak/hunter orange version.

        • Kent Roby

Or the camo/hunter orange version (to see if anyone gets the irony)!

        • Pennymac

They’d totally wear that up here in the hollers. If it had some sequins sprinkled in the camo, that is.

          • demidaemon

Man, you all are just dredging up eye-searing images today, aren’t you? Please stop, for the sake of my mind’s eye.

          • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Sequins? My, my! You’re fancy! I grew up in Far-East-Bumblef@&k-My-Uncle-Is-Also-My-Second-Cousin, and we never had sequins. I bet you got cable TV, too, dontcha?

          • Kent Roby

            Sequenced camo = timeless.

    • Betsy

I hate it. It makes her look paunchy and I’m quite sure she is not. I dislike the color combination too. Blech.

    • Hermione

I don’t think the colors are good for her and the dress is too tight. Also, I have never seen a Roksanda Ilincic dress that I have liked (including the two posted today). They always look awkward somehow. I don’t understand why these ladystars wear them, unless there are no options. I dislike Roksanda Ilincic designs as much as I dislike Stella McCartney’s.

      • Kent Roby

If Roksanda was challenged to produce a collection without color-blocking, she’d be as lost as a Miss Universe contestant who was forbidden to say “world peace”.

        • demidaemon

The least she could do is pick colors that, you know, complement each other. She may have some dgree of color blindness, if the past two dresses are any indication.

    • Sofia

this dress is too tricky to wear well. and the herringbone fabric is blah. a tricky, blah dress is the friend of no one.

    • Aidan B

Yup, those shoes are HIDEOUS. That is the color of a sad, sad olive languishing in a jar in a bar that’s never been asked to make a martini before.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I think the hem length is perfection. I also like this color combo better than Anne’s. The shoes are a disappointment.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

To fug or not to fug, that is the question. And she fugged.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Get Rid of Your Shoes, Seriously, They are Revolting.

    • Imasewsure

Think this one might even be worse than Anne’s (and that deserves a well placed flying champagne flute as well!). An improvement over the model? Well yes, that wasn’t hard…

    • Judih1

Black or Pewter color shoes would have helped. But the dress looks so tight in the stomach area it makes her look like she has a baby bump

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

It still looks like double faced fabric with a belt. As if the Project Runway challenge that week was how do you dress a ladystar for an important event with NO cutting or sewing the fabric? You do remember what fabric is, yes? No? Well then…

    • LJCdoc

But which distinguished Drag Race alum plays her? I’m going to go with Raja. Bonus: New game to play with every post!

    • Gatto Nero

The dress is a bit long, but shortening it would interfere with the draping of the side flounce; it would cut off part of the two folds.
The shoes are a warm grey (if that’s what that is) and the dress is cool (black or dark blue). A black or dark blue shoe would be much better here.

    • colleenjanel

That shoe is all wrong, but a far cry better than the clown shoes on the model!

    • JauntyJohn

      Does. Not. Flatter.

    • Kate Andrews

I’m not feeling the matchy lipstick, and the shoes are an abomination. But I like the orange ruffle!

    • Rhonda Shore

i don’t think that weird side ruffle would look good on anyone. And the length isn’t flattering to anyone.

    • msdamselfly

She really is glamorous and I think the dress looks very sexy. I wish she were a better actress. She stinks up Mad Men when she’s doing anything but sitting or standing still.

    • Lilithcat

At least she’s not wearing the model’s shoes!

      • Shawn EH

        Those shoes are so FMO.

        • Lilithcat

          FMO?

    • NMMagpie

Shoes: tradge. Dress: too tight across the hips and an unfortunate orange.

The bad lighting really helps nothing, either.

    • decormaven

Another look at this dress. Didn’t love it the first time, sure don’t love it now. And the shoes- let’s not speak of them.

      • sojourneryouth

At least the other had striking colors. This one is just tragique.

    • The Versatile Chef

I don’t know if it’s the dress but it looks like she’s wearing a few more pounds than usual, of which I heartily approve. But the dress? No, thank you.

    • Heather

Shorten the hem, let out the hips a little, and throw some black pointy pumps on her and this would look pretty good.

    • Pennymac

I haven’t seen the Anne post yet. Did hers look as home sewn as this one? Cause, yuck.

    • Lily

As my mama always said, if you don’t have something nice to say…. I take that back. The dress on its own is really interesting. There, that was nice.

    • Trickytrisha

Yep, I’d be dying to wear a weirdo dress that emphasizes my poochy tummy too. Her head (minus the teeth) is fine, and the bodice is nice, but below the waist the dress and shoes are a disaster.

      • filmcricket

Can we knock off the comments about her teeth, please?

        • Trickytrisha

Ya happy? I deleted the whole post. The elephant in the room will not be discussed.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Wildly unflattering to her figure. Columns don’t love curves.

    • random_poster

Contrary to most of the other BKs, I like Anne’s version better.

    • rkdgal

But I do love the colors in this dress. Just a skosh too long.

    • Shawn EH

Well, Jessica might not have enacted your scenario, but I bet Megan Draper would, and probably will, this season!

    • MzzPants

Okay. I’m laughing out loud at ‘RAAAAA’! I can just picture it.

    • filmcricket

I think she was wise to wear the belt around the flounce instead of under it the way the model did – helps obviate some of the tricky twisting that marred Anne’s version. I like this version of the dress better, I think. Sadly, it’s too tight across the belly and yes, those shoes are awful. Her head looks amazing.

    • KinoEye

The hem is absolutely too long. Makes her look wider and shorter than she is, and it’s amazing how a garment can do that to a woman like Jessica. Her head is aces, though.

    • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

Jessica’s version looks and fits better than Anne’s. It’s still an ugly dress.

    • SierraDelta

The way Jessica’s wearing the belt sort of squashes some of the exuberance out of the dress. Which is not necessarily a bad thing.

    • uprightcitizen

Seems like a navy shoe would have been the best choice, since A) it’s the complement of orange, and B) it appears in the closeup that the gray of the dress is actually a small navy and white print. Do they still make navy leather shoes? The hem length is very Kim Novak in “Vertigo,” which I kind of like. Still, just two inches shorter would have allowed us to see some shape to her legs, which would have been more flattering. She really does photograph like someone from another era. I guess that’s why she looks so perfect in a period piece like Mad Men.

    • Claudia Berry

One size up and she wouldn’t look pregnant.

    • demidaemon

If possible, this dress is uglier than Anne’s. And it is doing something weird porportionally to her midsection. Not good.

I would live to see a show called, “The Imaginary Version of Hollywood: Rupaulified.” Who plays who, though?

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

The seems on the dress are raw. How weird.
      I like the ring, btw.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I’d rather see her wear Elton John sparkly platform shoes than pair that dress with the god forsaken atrocity of a clown shoe that model is sporting. But yes, the ones Ms. Pare are wearing makes the look seem a bit muddy.

    • E. D.

Skirt is WAY too long and those shoes are awful. I don’t like the lipstick either.

    • prisma

In the straight-on shot, the dress makes it look like her right thigh is HUUUUUUGE.

    • quiltrx

For fuck’s sake on those shoes. Who decides that a black/white print should be set off by TAUPE shoes?
And FWIW, I like this dress better than the one Anne wore. I think the ‘pop’ of color here works better than two competing bright colors.

    • mightbewrong

I’m so happy she’s ditched that severe low ponytail for now. She looks really lovely here.

    • appliquer

      This is horrible!

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

UH…The belt is on incorrectly! It’s supposed to go under the right side fold…. STUPID FN stylist! Dress is waaaay to tight over stomach….none of this really matters. She’s gorgeous…dress is not!

    • nycfan

Not her hairstyle and I think we’ve now demonstrated on the willowy Hathaway and gorgeous Pare that this dress does not flatter — it pulls across and draws attention to the mid-section.

    • StillGary

that dress is ruining her flawless figure! I do like the grey & cantaloupe color though!

    • BEARAYMOND

I always feel like Jessica never lives up to her beauty – but I love love love the face and hair on this look. Did anyone else notice that she has it belted over the origami flap, while the models is floating free?

    • Joanna

I think I may like this dress. The fit leaves a bit to be desired, but overall, I don’t think this is bad (except the shoes. HORRID).

    • andi56

      Too tight; needs Spanx.

    • Sally Spannagle

I don’t think this is a flattering look for her, makes her look much less slender than she is. Also, are her lips perpetually chapped? The lipcolor is so fresh, though.

    • Fuchaforever

IMO, I think this would be a really fun dress to wear if you where like a hostess at a trendy restaurant or hotel in NYC paired with the same crazy laced oxford type shoes in the look book. Maybe have bleached short hair or something. But this is not a dress for lady stars in the RC- especially not with this shoes….and I repeat: this is not a dress for lady stars in the RC. so stop wearing it! Lol

    • judybrowni

c’MON, it’s a Frankendress and a skosh too tight, at that.

Does nothing for her, and it’s distracting from her pretty face.

(I’m not a big Megan fan, but even I don’t like what that dress is doing to her.)

    • Mrs. O

Oh dear. It’s a delightful dress But it looks so much better on the model. Good lord, Jessica’s Stylist Person! Can you not see that you have to provide a little breathing space for those charming pleats and ruffles? And the belt needs to be properly worn, dammit! The original is about the folding and fluttering. It’s not about the safety-orange belt that looks like it was stolen from a Slovenian road worker and wrapped around that sausage casing. The shoes should be returned immediately to WalMart. No excuses. Bad. Bad. Bad. And it is such a great look on the model!

    • mh

I like that she hasn’t done anything crazy with her teeth: they’re gappy, and still a fairly normal off-white colour, like all the rest of us normals…
