January Jones in Topshop at the “Rebels With A Cause” Gala

Posted on March 21, 2014

What a sassy little frock. Use “sassy little frock” in a sentence today, darlings. Trust us; you’ll never sound gayer.

“Mad Men” actress January Jones attends the “Rebels With A Cause” Gala in Los Angeles in a Topshop dress paired with a Jimmy Choo ‘Candy’ clutch and sandals.

Topshop Petite Satin Stripe A-Line Dress

Cute, right? Perfectly suited to her. And the shoes are hot. Playing up the lips and brows are The Thing right now, but on her, it has the effect of making her look like drunk Betty Draper. The face is retro but the hair’s a mess in comparison. We’re loving the lip and brow trend but we’re so very NOT loving the beach hair trend. Especially when you pair it with a sassy frock.

Sassy Frock should be a drag queen name.

Look at her getting her Bananarama on!

And yet, she looks strangely like Rita Ora. I think that means it is time for a moisturising hair treatment.

Like a 21st century Betty Draper.

  • KinoEye

Sassy little frock. Sounds like something my dad would’ve jokingly said about an outfit I wore — when I was a wee thing, he used to love to tease me about buying “cute little short sets,” knowing I couldn’t stand short sets. He also had a phrase he inherited from my three great aunts — “hanging pretty,” which could be used to refer to an outfit, drapes, a painting… anything, really, so long as it looked good.

That said, this isn’t quite hanging pretty. But I kind of like the makeup for her. The hair is all wrong for the dress, which is perfectly suited to her. Not bad overall.

  • marlie

I love this dress, I REALLY love the shoes, and her bold lipstick is the perfect accent. I wish her hair were a little smoother, but the tousled look suits her/the look.

    • jilly_d

I agree; I think the messiness of the hair offsets the stiffness of the dress. She looks youthful but not inapprpriately so. It’s a win for me.

  • gabbilevy

The problem I have the the hair is that the color doesn’t seem suited to her skin tone, at least not with this makeup. Great dress, though.

    • MilaXX

yep, hair’s looking a little too yellow and brassy, especially on the ends.

  • Danielle

    I’m loving the stripes!

  • mmebam

It looks like she was in the middle of getting her hair done, when she had to run for the photo call unexpectedly midway through.

  • uprightcitizen

I like it all but that scooped “this is really just a shirt” hemline. Looks silly on anyone older than 14, imho. But the Beetlejuice pattern with the red lips is cool.

  • Anglow

I know I am in the minority, but I think grown women in little-girl short dresses look silly and awkward.

    • http://wikeslongtrail.blogspot.com/ latenac

you’re not alone. I don’t think the dress looks good on her at all.

    • Jackie4g

The dress is too short. Period. She’s a gorgeous woman but this hem length is for a young girl I also think it needs a necklace.

    • barbarienne

I would like it more if it didn’t look so stiff. It’s like a really well-made Project Runway dress in a “use only gift wrap” challenge.

    • alyce1213

You’re not alone. I especially dislike — loathe — grown women flare, baby-doll dresses. I like this dress, but it really should be longer.

  • Glam Dixie

It may be a sassy frock but I don’t think it’s doing much for her. She’s is seriously pale. Like throw your arm up over you eyes and hiss dramatically if the sun touches you pale. It must be the makeup because her arms and legs don’t glow in quite the same way.

  • nannypoo

I love the dress but not for her. It would be perfect for Kiernan Shipka. Maybe they’ve taken to raiding each other’s closets.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Maybe they could trade dresses — Kiernan could take this one and January could take that gladiator smock Kiernan had on the other day.

  • Sarah

Her hair and her face don’t match. It makes everything about this look off.

  • cocohall

That sassy little frock is triggering a migraine for me. Especially those sassy little darts at the hips. And why when you are as slender as JJ would you need to lengthen the sleeves? As a proud owner of “auntie arms” I know why some women want some coverage there, but JJ is not a girl who needs that and the longer sleeve throws off the proportions of the dress.

    • MommyMitzi

The waistline is too high too and with the longer sleeve, one’s eyes go directly to her middle section. Ugh.

      • cocohall

Oh you are right. The waist is too high! And that in combo with the sleeves is what is giving me vertigo. On the right person, I bet this would be cute. As it is, she should have little disclaimer cards to hand to people – prolonged exposure could cause seizures. Caution.

      • ElaineMarie34

You’re right, there’s something very wrong with the sleeves – they’re too big and too long for her and they’re creating weird folds. Otherwise I like it.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

She looks amazing. Great dress, fantastic shoes. And I kinda like the messy hair with the sassy lil’ frock. It works.

  • FrigidDiva

I LOATHE that hairstyle which I call the “Kristen Stewart”–that stupid part/not really part casual look that you know took hours to perfect. It just always looks sloppy and bugs me to no end. HISS.

    • Qitkat

Funny you should say that. I used to hate it too, til I tried it on myself and decided I liked it, on occasion. Having spent a lifetime of parting my hair perfectly, as one always did when one is my age, it’s freeing to go for the JBF beachy hair. I always got scolded by my mom, when I, as a teenager in Florida, left my beachy hair to blow in the wind.

  • sagecreek

I love this dress on her. She looks comfortable in it, too, which one cannot always say about la January.

  • Lilah

I love the messy hair with the glam face. It makes it more modern.

  • Capt. Renault

    My God, she looks… happy?

I don’t know how to process this.

    • decormaven

Yes, I was all ready for what I call her “Mad Toddler” look. When she smiles, it is glorious.

  • carnush

Perfect, head to toe. I think the messy hair is great here, keeps the look from being too harsh.

  • wisenhar

“Use “sassy little frock” in a sentence today, darlings. Trust us; you’ll never sound gayer.” – Unless you say, “Ssssssssasssssssssy little frock”. That’s gayer. :-)

  • frannyprof

I want that dress. How many wanna bet that the newest member of the BK family will call her/himself SassyFrock?

  • Qitkat

I like it on her, the sassy little details. And I want it, but it would look ridiculous on me.

  • colleenjanel

It’s funny how fashion seems to love extremes. We’ve gone from nude invisible lips to strong, BRIGHT, NOTICE ME lips. I was just reading that orange is the “it” lip color this year. I’m THRILLED that the nude lip thing seems to be over, but why can’t we do something in between?

  • MilaXX

I like the dress but it looks a little too short for anyone over 16 to be wearing. Add another 2 inches and I’d be okay with this. Hair looks a little sloppy though.

  • LCTerrill

I actually love all of this. Well done, January and Stylist!

    • Denise Alden

Me, too! For reasons I don’t understand at all, I adore January Jones and her epic b****face.

  • Violentcello

Agree on the beach hair. It’d be pretty on the street, but not on the red carpet.

Did you all see her in Violet Grey? Meee-ow. Violetgrey dot com.

  • Leah Elzinga

ooooh, someone got herself some new brows! And Ms.Jones, you’re smile lights up a room. I know the Uncles extol the virtues of your EBF (Epic Bitch Face), but truly that smile is one of your best assets.

  • ojosazules

Her shoes are great. The dress seems a little young for her, or just too short, maybe.

  • Sam Smith

Its weird that I can’t place who she is when she smiles.

  • Roz

3/4 pose is so wonderful. Legs and shoes and hair and smile all killer.

  • par3182

I know a drag queen named Donna Frock.

  • stubbornthoughts

Am I the only one distracted by the uterus darts??? Who would want to give that area dimension?

    Other than that, I like.

    • Glam Dixie

No you are not, they draw the eye straight to the crotch.

    • MommyMitzi

Yes, very awkward. It makes her look like she has a poochy tummy which she definitely does not. Could be a fantastic dress but IMHO, it’s a fail in the construction/design.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I love this but I think lengthening the sleeves was a mistake.

  • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

This would be a million times cuter if the sleeves were the length shown on the model. As-is it’s making her look slouchy and wide, and J. Jo is anything but wide. It’s a big improvement over her usual R.C. looks, though. She should continue heading in this direction.

    • Daisy77

i was planning to make the same comment about the sleeves. On JJ they look top heavy and clumsy. On the model, all sorts of adorable.

  • CatherineRhodes

Drunk Betty Draper? I am sitting here at my desk laughing.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/divine_aphasia/ Constant Cat

I like it all, actually. Beachy retro, I can dig it. love her (non-Betty) smile!!

  • embers618

Once again, kudos to whomever cast her and Kiernan Shipka as mother and daughter.

    • KinoEye

Right? With her brows defined like that, I see the resemblance even more than usual. Truly inspired casting, especially since she looks like both JJ and Jon Hamm even more as she grows up.

  • EEKstl

Sassy indeed. LOVE the word frock. So British and Fabulous.

  • Shawn EH

Wow, no bitchface at all? Somebody’s in a good, sassy mood!

  • All_Hail_Great_Satin

I actually think her hair looks rad. Just me?

  • decormaven

With the lines of the dress, I think the stylist was going for a relaxed look to the hair to soften the look a bit. Not exactly fond of the hair, but I get the sense of the style. Shoes are killer!

  • crash1212

It is a sassy little frock, but I hate where the sleeves are hitting her. They’re much shorter on the model and that looks much better. Wonder why they did that. Shoes are fab.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    Super cute, but that HAIR.

  • Inspector_Gidget

Just a whiff of Courtney Love. Which isn’t always a good thing. But in this case, it’s Courtney during the twenty minutes she cleaned up after rehab. It works for her.

  • B_C_J

Dress & shoes are edgy & sexy. The hair is a MESS. Sleek hair either up or down would have raised this to a different level.

  • Laylalola

I don’t even think it’s beach hair or a trend. I think after a decade women are sick of the Keratin “everyone must have super-straight hair” shit (I know I’ve been sick of it for 7 or 8 years now).

  • Jacob Bowen

Totally used “Sassy Little Frock” in a sentence today, but I’m pretty sure that it didn’t make me any gayer…because it came after the sentence, “when I was straightening my hair I got mascara in my eye”.

  • Clash D

Love the pop of red lipstick and metallic clutch but I feel that the hem is an inch too short on all sides.

  • demidaemon

I kind of hate the shoes and I really hate the hair. Dress is cute, though. I always feel like JJ’s style ends up like a dart game. One piece is the bullseye and everything else is at the outer edges.

  • French_Swede

Perfect look for her. I think she left her hair a bit messy to keep it from looking too “Betty” perfect.

  • Monabel

What is the point to that skirt dart? Just to put one where we haven’t seen one before? However, no under-belly cupping.

    • alyce1213

Visual interest and shape. It’s just a little different detail.

      • Monabel

You’re right, but that isn’t good enough. Makes my sewist’s eye twitch.

  • ubreyn12

Loving the dress and I would totally rock it. Too bad it is already sold out. Bummer. :(

  • Carla_Charlton

The dress just doesn’t seem to fit her correctly in the bust. I also think the length and the slight shirt-tail hem makes it looks like she forgot her pants. As with many things, disappointing because it had so much potential.

  • Columbinia

It is a Sassy Frock. And good for her. But the hair looks tired. It should be crisp and smooth to go with the dress.

  • KT

Fabulous dress, I would wear that in a heartbeat. I actually like both the hair and makeup, though I think the eyebrows are overwhelming her face a bit. But she looks pretty great overall. And she’s actually SMILING, my god!

  • kimmeister

I like the shoes, but not with that dress. It didn’t need any more horizontal stripes.

  • Sunshine16

Funny riffs from my fabulous gay uncles was just what I needed to get me to the end of this week! Thanks boys, you just had me laughing out loud at my desk!

  • Sunraya

She’s smiling, That’s a win in my book!

  • Alloy Jane

Love everything but the hair. Is it me or has she never seemed so cheerful as she does here?

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I just put in the papers to legally change my name to ‘Sassy Frock.’
I don’t mind beach hair. And I don’t mind lip and brow.
I mind mis-match. And those two things are a mis-match. Like when I see a girl in shorts and a hoodie on the subway at 9am with smokey eyes and visible lip liner???
Are you slumming it or hitting it? Pick one dear.

  • ankali

She has a lovely smile, but oddly, I prefer the bitchface. Wouldn’t have gone as well with the cute little dress, though.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I will pass on the drag name Sassy Frock. But I had a skin biopsy and I’m hoping I won’t have to change my drag name to Melanie Noma. Today was a shit day and I’m going to hang out with my drag friends Melanie Tonin and Amy Bien.

    • Gatto Nero

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I hope you get the results soon and all is well.

  • Fuchaforever

I LOVE it all (except the hair)!!! You go girl!

  • kerryev

“Playing up the lips and brows are The Thing right now, but on her, it
has the effect of making her look like drunk Betty Draper.” … thank you! I was trying to figure out why she looked so uncaffeinated.

  • Hoffa_w_HerHead

I kind of love that the hair looks a little trashy. It makes her not look as “Betty Draper” and more of a rock & roll type of girl. It’s working for me!

  • alliekat9090

I hate the hemline. Looks apron-ish.

  • http://reneshiro.tumblr.com/ kingderella

This is a “A-Line” dress? Do not understand.

    Anyway, she looks great!

  • Mia Moreno

I love her hair! I want it! Okay, maybe it doesn’t go with the dress, but it’s still a flirty and attractive look overall.

  • lrhoff

Not loving the frock. There isn’t much sassy about it….a little striped frock, perhaps. Not killing me.

  • GeoDiva

Will someone find her a brush, please?

  • Cassidy Olsen

I really like the look overall but don’t love what the stripes are doing around her midsection. But she looks so cheerful! I bought into the story that she’s an ice queen in real life too, but I recently followed her on instagram and she seems like such a fun, sweet lady I feel bad for ever rooting against her.

  • RuthGo

I don’t know, I think the dress looks really cheap. Like Forever 21 cheap. Sorry, I’m not voting sassy.

  • Joanna

I almost didn’t recognize her in the first shot, as she’s smiling.

  • Random_acct

Nice short dress. Love the high heels too. What a cute lady.

  • heuristicvalue

I think she looks great here. But I love and sport beach hair myself. I like the juxtaposition of the sassy frock and messy hair, personally. Makes her look less serious.

  • https://plus.google.com/+FrankLithiumz/posts Frank Lithium

January looks so… un-Betty, which is a very good thing in this case.
