IN or OUT: Elisabeth Moss in Emilio Pucci at the 2014 PaleyFest “MadMen” Panel

Posted on March 24, 2014

Stand back everyone. There’s a gal on the prowl.

Elisabeth attends the 2014 PaleyFest “Mad Men” panel at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California in an Emilio Pucci dress paired with Brian Atwood pumps and Jennifer Meyer jewelry.

Super-short, skin-tight and paired with some pointy-toed hot-for-teacher heels. If that ain’t dressing toward the latter option of “Everyone wants to be mo or do me” then we don’t know what is. Not that the “do me” thing should be taken literally. It just means believing in your hotness and projecting it outward. “Be me” is more believing in your fabulousness and projecting it outward.

Anyway, kudos to her for feeling hot, but we kinda think the overall effect is a little, shall we say, downscale. This is kind of her big style flaw. When she dresses for hot ,which she likes to do often, she falls into the Tacky Trap a little too much. The dress is dicey – especially those weird paramecium lace panels –  but you could style it up with a little effort and creativity. Some more modern shoes in perhaps a slightly less in-your-face color and a less severely styled head would help a girl out here.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! A gal can’t have a “DO ME” moment often enough, I say.

OUT! This is like that time Peggy Olson went to the strip club. Oh honey, no.

The Kittens were in agreement that Alyson Hannigan’s dress looked like a super-absorbent maxi-pad, which means, OUT.

  • PastryGoddess

    Me likey

  • @Biting Panda

OUT. She has the resources to do better.

  • butterflysunita

I say IN though I don’t really like the look. The hair and makeup seem off and the dress is just okay. And I don’t really like this tactic of matching the lipstick to the shoes.
IN because I can’t really say she looks bad, just that I think she can look a whole better.

    • 3boysful

I’m with you–the hair and makeup are taking it down.

    • tereliz

Agreed. She’s not setting the world on fire, but then, she’s not wearing anything I want to set on fire, either.

  • Annarosa

thumbs down for the shoes, but in general is IN

  • I’ll give her an IN overall, but I hate the tie at the neck and agree that there are better shoe options. I think the dress is cute for the most part, and the high neckline balances out the short hem. Plus, bonus points since she clearly feels great wearing it.

  • Malibufire

Hate the doilies. Love her, but the outfit is out.

  • Stella Zawistowski

    “Paramecium lace panels.”

My love for T.Lo just increased by about 1,000 nerdy percent.

    • NinaBoo

Mine too. Now I want to get out my colored pencils because that was my first intro into paramecium. “Color the endoplasm and ectoplasm. Note the difference between the macronucleus and micronucleus. Nice vacuole, Monica!”

    • random_poster

No kidding! The collision of nerdy + fashion = I’m blown away!

    • Vaniljekjeks

    • kimmeister

I’ve used amoebas as a style reference, but never anything as specific as paramecia. Kudos to TLo!

  • sienna elm

In – I love this dress & like the hair. Ambivalent towards the shoes…they could be better, they could be worse. I just wish she had better makeup. I rarely like her makeup, maybe it’s just me?

    • Kitten Mittons

Nope, you’re not alone. Her eyes look underdone here, to me.

An IN for me overall, but I miss her shorter hair.

  • marlie

Lowercase ‘in.’ I hate the bow at the top of the dress. The dress itself is fine (nothing terrible exciting, but nothing wrong with it, either), but it could have benefited from an extra two inches added to the hem. And the shoes are fine as well, I suppose, though I don’t love this particular shade of red.

  • siriuslover

Out. I’ve seen her look much better. And I’m with you on the “paramecium” lace panels!

  • Kate Andrews

I want to be Mo! 😉

  • Janet B

There is a bow at the neckline?! OUT!

  • Kent Roby

The lace and the little bow seem to be competing (“I’m exposed, yet demure”), yet she somehow seems to make it work for me. IN.

  • Scimommy

Don’t know what you’re kvetching about. IN! (Although I don’t like the hair.)

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

not loving her head, but i think she looks great in the dress. It strikes me as she tries to dress as un-Peggy as possible when she is out in the RW….unlike Christina Hendricks who should only ever dress as Joan, always.

  • MilaXX

I’m on the fence with this one. The dress is a hair too tight, but the shoes I fear are a step too far. I hate to say it, but this is OUT for me.

  • In for sure!

  • Lilah

It’s an IN for me, but I wish the dress was slightly bigger in the hips and the shoes weren’t so shiny.

  • NMMagpie

I think she looks terrific. I binge-watched Top of the Lake this weekend and all I want to be is her right now. IN!!

  • luludexter

IN, but with the caveat that the dress is too short (about 2 inches at the hem would have helped a lot) and the shoes need to be classier.Otherwise, it’s ok. not bad enough to be an out.

  • SayWhaaatNow

Out. She looks all over the place and she has been a little more put-together than this.

  • Synnamin

OUT. all I can see are lace tentacles climbing up her breasts

  • ballerinawithagun

IN and this isn’t something that would normally appeal to me. Love the curves of the lace and the way it accents her assets.
And thanks for my vocabulary word for the day.

  • SugarSnap108

OUT. I agree the dress is downscale, and just odd — like it’s apologizing for trying to be hot with white lace and a precious bow. Just be hot.

  • Stacey Summerville

    IN! Lurve.

  • Alyssa_T_Robot

IN – i’m a big fan of lizzy’s more sexay outfits after all the dowdy stuff she’s had to wear over the years on mad men.

  • elemspbee

    OUT. uninteresting.

  • msdamselfly

Great from the waist up. However too short and tight from the waist down.

  • alyce1213

Out. Can’t get past the paramecia. It’s a non-effort, just a tight dress with red shoes.

    • Qitkat

Your comment is In, just for getting the word ‘paramecia’ into a fashion post!

      • alyce1213

T-Lo said it first! (Of course)

        • Qitkat

Of course. I skimmed the reading and completely missed it 🙁

  • Imasewsure

Way IN for the dress which is adorable and short without being too short… out for the shoes… hate the shoes with this

  • jw_ny

hate the stupid little black bow, lace panels, hair, and on-the-prowl-shoes.

  • filmcricket

I really, really hate those lace panels, but otherwise I think she looks pretty good. Lowercase in.

  • Aidan B

In! Dress is flattering, even though I’m not crazy about the lacy parts, and I love the pop of color thanks to the red shoes. Face looks great.

  • In_Stitches

IN-she’s selling it like potato salad that’s about to turn so I’ve gotta give it to her. Plus, while nothing is dynamite, there aren’t any big errors evident. The bow is silly, the shoes were an odd, but safe choice and the hair is a bit limp, but those are all tiny troubles.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. Hair is underwhelming, shoes look like those of someone who can’t afford a different pair for every occasion and/or dress. Makeup is a little harsh. And, this is not really relevant in today’s world, but because I’m old: those shoes would look better with hosiery.

  • BLauD

Hate the little black bow on there, and the fit is definitely too tight, but it’s not quite an out. Just looks like she put zero effort into this look…
    A just passable in.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I actually like everything except the hair. The hair is terrible. And she needs a bag to pull it together. But good try. IN.

  • catherines

IN! Because she looks hot and she knows it.

  • conniemd

In, though I don’t like the white lacey panels on the dress. Would have looked much hotter in plain white, not lace.

  • JauntyJohn

If those panels weren’t lace I might have been swayed, but as is? No.

  • imspinningaround

Short, tight, and legs? YO WHERE TED AT

  • Sarah

I say in, because it may be a weensy bit too short, but it looks good on her body. I don’t like the shoes, though.

  • Tricia

    In! Rawr…

  • Judy_S

In, paramecia notwithstanding. Her neck and shoulders always look kind of tense to me, but in this dress she looks strong and athletic instead.

  • Kelly

Out. Too short, too tight. And god save us, it’s got a bow.

  • decormaven

She looks so damn happy I want to go with an IN, but the silly lace bow, too bright shoes and the not quite there hair make it borderline for me.

  • Jessica Freeman

Well its not tap routine shorts, so there’s tha….the arm doilies aren’t adding anything exciting. It’s an OUT.

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

IN. I think the dress-shoe combo is cute if a little boring . Her makeup/hair is veeery bland though!

  • Qitkat

Out, I don’t care for this dress at all, or the hair style. But like Jon Hamm in the previous post, she is clearly in the modern era, and is glowing with ‘Be Me’ vibes.

  • sagecreek

IN, although I think all your criticisms are right on point. Still, apparently she is still getting over Mr. Arminsten (sp), so I’m going to cut her some slack.

  • Sunshine16

I’ll give her an IN. I do have to say, I thought she was wearing white lace gloves & holding her hands up by her shoulders in the first pic!

  • kcnitch

Out. I don’t like the lace panels, plus I hate the hair and the makeup looks harsh to me.

  • aquamarine17

IN. she is wearing the dress so well, showing off her nice bod/waistline. the shoes & lipstick make it, IMO. the far part in her hair works too. maybe a shape she ought to remember, this dress…

  • Allie Carter

IN. She looks cute and happy.

  • Sara__B

OUT. She could do so much better. A celebrity in designer clothes on a red carpet should never look like she shops the bargain racks at the trendy store in the local mall. Leave that to us ordinary folk!

  • SewingSiren

It looks like a vintage dress that was cut off to make it more “modern” . I never looks right.

    • sojourneryouth

It does. And those panels are unflattering and make her boobs look low. Not good, but she sure looks happy! I hope it’s cuz Peggy gets more to do this season! 🙂

  • Sabin

Out. Dress is ugly, hair is…what is that, exactly?

  • Very half-hearted in. I like the dress, but putting it with those shoes just makes it trashy.

She’s my choice for a Jodie Foster bio-pic though.

    • kimmeister

      Ooh, good casting call!

  • VCR1

    I vote IN

  • nannypoo

Needs a manicure. She really does not dress very well, but she looks happy.

  • another_laura

Out. I hate the details on that dress, shoes not helping.

  • EEKstl

Can I first just say that the fact that you worked “paramecium” into this critique just…I just love you more than ever now, as if that were even possible. If the dress were just above knee-length and the shoes were not shiny and red (perhaps matte and cobalt?) she’d have been on to something. I’m still giving her an IN, tho.

  • The dress gives off a very polyester vibe. Maybe if the fit were a little better and with different shoes. I miss her blond, shorter hair.

  • Danielle

    ME-OW. Small in.

  • LJCdoc

Out. Also my new imaginary band name is Weird Paramecium Lace Panels.

  • She barely squeeks by with an IN for me. Just barely.

I once heard my partner’s ornery grandmother say to his sister on her way out: “Only hookers and children wear red shoes. Which one are you, dear?” So whenenver I see a woman in red shoes that’s all I can think of.

  • Roz

She’s the happiest little super hero ever! Paramecium Girl wants to kick YOUR ass with her built-to-puncture fire engine red high heels! Do something nefarious right now, okay?

IN. Even though it’s weird she looks good.

  • She looks sweet. It’s “do me” but the bust is covered and the length isn’t ovarian. IN!

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Cute dress, but really…she needs about 3″ in the width, and another 5″ to the length. That would make it better….

  • no to the dress, yes to her obvious “I’m happy to be me”!

Hell no to the carpet. Why are hotel carpets always fugly as hell??

  • IN. She looks great, even if I find the shows objectionable.

  • Chickadeep

That hot watermelon/coral color is a THING with Mad Men this season, eh? While I love it on Christina H./Joan, it’s only okay (not bad) on Lizzy M./Peggy…I don’t mind it on the lip but I am not loving it on the shoe—and I am a sucker for almost any flavor of red shoe.

More to the point for this, though, I have to say it’s just barely OUT. The weird shape left by the too-fussy lace cut-outs is…distracting from a distance.

  • This is a lot of mixed messages in one look. Short tight black dress–with a bow at the neck? Bright red shoes–but plain patent pumps? I don’t know, the whole thing just doesn’t hang together for me. I have to vote OUT.

  • Clash D

The dress looks great on her, the shoes need to be a different shade. Also in need of an accessory of some sort. Tsk. IN.

  • jkatkins

Agree with all the comments by those voting out, but must give her an IN just because, despite its flaws, she is OWNING it!

  • snarkykitten

that hair is dreadful. I know it’s at the awkward length stage of growing out a pixie, but yuuuchhhh

I like this dress on her quite a bit but the aforementioned shoes are a bridge too far. A more modern, less “vampy” shoe would have served her much better. And, I would love to see a bracelet or cuff on her arm. So bare…..

  • tired_mommy

In. It’s a little tight, but not bad enough to be out. Plus she looks comfortable with herself and happy.

  • SierraDelta

The dress looks like she picked it up off the floor and put it on inside OUT.

  • RuthGo

I agree that it’s a little cheap looking but overall its cute without being tacky. The shoes are bad though; you’re right that it needed a modern, “look at that!” kind of shoe. So, kind of in?

  • Valdri8

The dress should be just above the knee, and the look would be killer

  • barbarienne

I HATE HATE HATE the lacey bits and the bow. Ugh, who thought those would be attractive?

However, I do love the overall silhouette on her. It combines with her square-standing posture to make her look a little like a superhero. (See, ladystars? When you don’t do the “I gotta pee” stance, you can look HEROIC instead of like a child.)

So I’m going to call it IN. Not awesome, but more right than wrong, and her attitude is helping.

  • Nicole

Paramecium, now there’s a word I haven’t heard since high school. And they totally are parameciums!

  • Grumpy Girl

out (lowercase). I’ve had to think long and hard, because I like a lot of the way the dress looks on her (minus the small saggy bow), but the shoes just look like they don’t fit (as well as being nuclear-dipped glowing). And she looks so damn happy, but her hair looks too undone, while her makeup looks . . . bad: the red tones are too bright, although I like her eyes. (ie, the makeup of her eyes made me look at the actual eyes, which seems good.)

  • beebee10

    IN IN

  • colleenjanel

In from the neck down. The whole head is making me twitchy.

  • dalgirl

    51% in.

  • Gatto Nero

No to the lace insets and the bow. The overall silhouette isn’t bad, though. The dress should be a couple inches longer.
    The shoes look hurty.

  • DoctorBelle

Out, she’s capable of being hotter than this, and it’s a bit I-just-got-dumped, need-to-get-laid-to-feel-better.

  • tallgirl1204

I say “in,” for the “I am so NOT Peggy Olson” of this.

  • kimmeister

I like the dress, weird frippery and all, but Girl, that ain’t your shoe shape. The hair is also no bueno. Just on this side of OUT.

  • KTI4000

I was with her til I got to the shoes. There’s something “hot for teacher” about the black mini with the lace panels. I like it. But the shoes hurt me.

  • Jess Collett

I don’t like the shoes, but IN. The dress is fun and she looks super confident in it.

  • brown-eyed girl

In . Much better than her usual.

  • Her nails look like she closed her thumbs in the car door on the way to the panel. The dress is all right, but I don’t like the shoes with it.

  • Rhonda Shore

OUT, but only because of those “weird paramecium lace panels,” which were almost like arrows pointing to her boobs…without those i would have voted it borderline in.

  • Liana Brooks

OUT – Honey, that ain’t your haircut.

  • Lucinda Head

Out! Her boobs look like Eeyore’s ears.

  • LaSylphide

In because this is an improvement.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I see she gave up breathing for the evening. It’s cute but it’s way too small for her.

  • Jangle57

No, I just don’t like the overall effect – OUT

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    In. Baby steps.

  • Meri

In, though she could do better.

  • suzq

I have to recuse myself on the make-up and outfit (as I know the stylists.) But the hair is bought and paid for fancy and looks like I did when I didn’t bother to put any styling product in mine! Stars pay GOOD MONEY for styling and I just don’t think the hair is being served well here.

  • stubbornthoughts

In. The shoes are too much, but the dress is sexy chic on her. She seems to feel good in it, too.

  • smayer

Tiny patent leather pussy bow. OUT.

  • Judy_J

I don’t hate it, but I don’t really like it, either. If forced to make a decision, I guess I’d say IN, but just barely.

  • Bernadette

No! I don’t know why, but that dress if off-putting.

  • Lower L

    You had me at “paramecium.”

  • theotherjdekay

  • MissFern

    She looks so cute!

  • madge

i think the dress really suits her, but the shoes are heinous (sorry pegs).
gotta go with IN tho cos i love her!

  • Wendi126

I hate the dress. I don’t like the shoes. Not caring for her makeup. Hair is ok. Giving her an IN however cause she just looks so damn cute in the last pic and her grin is blocking out the rest 🙂

  • Calinda_L

IN! And I gotta say, I think a woman wearing a really great LBD, with kicky hair and fab shoes is a “BE ME” look if ever there was one. Frankly, your BE v. DO me designations are pushing it most of the time, like you’re tying way too hard to work your book in. She looks great and confident and comfortable in her skin and overall, just sort of kicking ass on the red, er, multi-colored carpet.

  • StillGary

    The grin gets the IN!

  • IN. She looks confident and chic.

  • Julie Chase

In. I have no idea why, I’m tired and she looks good. The dress is too tight but I actually like the weird lace…things.

    See, tired.

  • kt

Looking good girl- in the full shots( a little weird in the close ups) and far more importantly, she loves how she looks. IN

  • Judih1

The hair and the shoes take it to tacky town ,OUT

  • Uncle Spike

Hmm…I’m not sure. I lean toward “in” because of the BAM attitude on display in the first picture, and she’s rocking that frock. Great gams, too. I do think her makeup is a bit severe and angular, and I’m not feeling the hair. So an “in,” but not with much enthusiasm.

  • somebody blonde

    In. She mostly looks good.

  • crash1212

  • Heather

IN. I mostly like it. Those shoes could (and should) be better. But overall, I think she looks so happy and is owning it so much that I can’t help but like it.

  • MarissaLG

It’s definitely too tight, but she still gets an IN from me.

  • pookiesmom

I think she looks great. IN.

  • AzSportsGirl

“Everyone wants to be mo” — best Freudian type – EVER!!! LOLOL.

    • AzSportsGirl

It’s a big ole MEH for me – is that in or out?

  • I really want this to be in but, much like the way Angus’ shorts grew larger as they traveled up the flagpole, those lace cutouts get more horrible and awkward every time I look at them. OUT, by a hair.

  • Shawn EH

I like it: weird mix of frilly and sexy, which is so Peggy, were she around today.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • teensmom99

OUT. I want to give points for improvement and it isn’t as godawful as some of what she has worn but it’s and out. It’s a weird dress and all the styling is just not what we expect from our fabulous stars.

  • KinoEye

Oh girl, that hair is a sad mess. The dress is just OK. The shoes are far too bright… I guess I’ll give it a tepid in, because it’s not making my eyes bleed and it’s not offensive. It’s just kinda there.

  • demidaemon

For me, the bigger problem is the lumpy fit. Don’t mind the shoes or her head styling, but the lumpiness is way distracting, plus the paramecium lace inserts, which I can’t unsee. OUT.

  • poggi

The bow looks like it is made of licorice or beef jerky. If it is, then in. Otherwise I am going to say out.

  • SophieCollier

OUT. That bow is just too prissy, and her hair is making me sad.

  • dash1211

    Oh, out.

  • Lorelei_D

IN, she looks great. Only the shoes are bringing her down. Tight & short are fine when nothing is spilling out. More demure shoes with this, please.

  • E. D.

OUT. The shoes don’t play with that ridiculous bow and her eye makeup (concealer) is no good.

  • prisma

    Lukewarm IN.

  • ojosazules

Out. Because you never want TLo using the word “paramecium” when discussing your dress.

  • MM4321

She looks good, but showing she’s not totally comfortable by hunching the shoulders up. If the dress makes her do that then maybe “GTNYD.” Hee hee, just wanted to say that at least one time! Giving me a Jodie Foster vibe.

  • Columbinia

Out. The dress needs to fit smoothly. The lace paramecium inserts, are they meant to be sexy or prim Victorian or prim-Victorian sexy? I get no read off them. The whole look is almost from a 8th grade sewing class, the final project fashion show.

  • quiltrx

Interesting dress…could be better, but she seems to be feeling it. So I’ll say IN.

  • mickiemonkey

From the thumbnail it looked like someone was standing behind her trying to cop a feel.

  • livesarah

In, as long as she goes up a size.

  • FridaStaire

In! for the smile and the leg muscles.

  • DinahR

  • kamo12

I never “got” her personal style until watching Top of the Lake, as weird as that sounds since she spent the whole show in running pants and tank tops. But she seemed so at ease and just-rolled-out-of-bed chic, without her natural athleticism hidden under a bunch of vintage hoist-and-pulley underthings. This girl needs more Alexander Wang in her life, less frou-frou Italian designers.

  • Sweetvegan

    In! She looks great!

  • judybrowni

    I can’t with that hair.

Why with a style that makes her look as though she’s balding?

  • ScarlettHarlot

    In! Get it, Lizzie!

  • Jamie Kearns

That bow is pure Peggy Olson. In.

  • stu844

Out out out. The white lace panels make me think ‘sexed up school marm’

  • Denise Rambo

OMG that’s hideous and it doesn’t fit.

  • Mousentrude

Out for me. Dress is weird but could be OK with different footwear. The shoes just make it tacky.
