IN or OUT: Alyson Hannigan at the 2014 PaleyFest “How I Met Your Mother” Event

Posted on March 17, 2014

A recent Buffy binge has us wanting to like this, but the longer we look at it, the more we can see wrong.

Alyson Hannigan attends the 2014 PaleyFest “How I Met Your Mother” event at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

First off: the nails. Totally wrong. We will brook no argument on this. They simply don’t go with that dress and they really stand out awkwardly. Second: the dress. Girl, it’s Not Your Dress. But frankly, we don’t know if it’s anyone’s dress. The fabric looks like upholstery and the waist sits a bit high on her, which is only made worse by the wide pleats and the focus-pulling band of black on the bottom. And the shoes are nice, but they look a little heavy for the dress. Then again, that could be because we keep thinking she’s going to pick up a raquet and play tennis any second now.

Agree/Disagree? Show your work, please.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! It’s real-world cute! I or someone I know personally would wear this!

OUT! Way too “Out for Cosmos with the girls!”

The Veronica Mars fans tried to rally, but ultimately, the kittens couldn’t get behind Kristen Bell’s mosquito netting dress, voting it OUT.

There’s no designer listed — PR bottom third? OUT

  • Out. L’bad. I saw her in a tuk in line buying Halloween supplies with her husband at a store I used to work at. She was overwhelmingly adorable, Alexis melted the candy with his hotness. I have high standards for this couple.

    • sagecreek

They are totes adorbs! Which is why this look breaks my heart. I kind of wanted her to make SMG eat her heart out.

  • pinkxxa

The fabric looks like bounty paper towels…or maxi pads

    • DebbieLovesShoes

Ooo! THAT’s what it is. I couldn’t figure out what this reminded me of…..

    • schadenfreudelicious

      Soft and absorbent…

    • quiltrx

Well, if she gets food on her boobs every time she eats at a restaurant, like I do, all that will come in handy.

      • pinkxxa

Yeah I might need one of these myself

    • mrspotts66

i first thought the material looked like the paper smock at the gyn’s office.
      but you’re much closer.

      • pinkxxa

Oh yeah me too, it also looks like those plasticky diaper changer things. But bounty was definitely my first thought.

  • elirt

Out – it’s not a flattery shape and looks oddly heavy.

    • rosie5215

Agreed. Sadly, this horrid silhouette is everywhere this spring.

  • LJCdoc

Pic 1. What are Uncles T and Lo smoking? She looks great!
Pic 3. OK, so it looks a bit like a quilted vest from 1984. But still!
Pic 5. What the eff is on her nails ??!!!!??
Pic 6. Never question T and Lo. OUT.

  • jw_ny

why do I get the feeling she’s about ready to start tap dancing?

not liking the dress really, but think it’d be improved with a belt…some waist definition.

  • sagecreek

Oh, Willow. I see you’ve gone back to the softer side of Sears. OUT.

    • majorbedhead

      This literally made me LOL.

It’s slightly nicer than the thing she wore in the first episode, but that’s not saying much.

      • BuffaloBarbara

I dunno… I think I’ll take the first episode outfit over this one.

But I LOL’d, too. In touch with our inner Cordelias today, I guess.

  • lalahartma

    In! 🙂

  • lalahartma

    In! 🙂

  • ChelseaNH

Love her, but this dress is an OUT

  • majorbedhead

Evil Willow would burn it with fire.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I have no arguments. That’s just a weird dress, which shouldn’t be as weird as it is, given its individual elements. What is it? I want to lock it in a room somewhere and do experiments on it.

  • luludexter

  • deelup

  • IN-ish. In a perfect world the pleats would start about 2″ lower down, to really emphasise the old-school tennis dress look. She’d also be wearing nailpolish that her daughter didn’t choose and a better lipstick.

    • Jacob Bowen

I also think it would be INSTANTLY better without that black band at the bottom…IN-ish.

      • I see what you mean – but when I was about 10 I had a white self-striped drop-waisted dress with a very dark navy band at the bottom like this one and it rocked my world, so I am inclined in favour.

  • Mothra

  • Sarah

Oh, tiny “in” because I don’t think she looks BAD, per se, but the way the waist hits her is making her look wider than she is. The shoes are really cute, but they look too formal for a tennis dress. And yeah, hell to the nay on those golden triangle nails.

  • Janet B

Heavy tennis dress with black band added for modesty.

  • kimmeister

I think the dress could work with a belt, and lighter shoes.

  • crashtestbonnie

White is hard for read heads – especially freckly ones like Ms AH and myself – to pull off, but I think the real trouble here is the odd poufy shape. Shoes are super cute, tho! And yes, the Pinterest nails need to die.

  • decormaven

Out, because not even little children at pajama parties should sport those nails. Plus the look is unbalanced- with the strong band of black at the hem and those shoes, it just pulls the focus down. Girl, you are too fine for this.

  • conniemd

Out this is a dress meant to be worn by a tween, not a mature woman.

  • oatmealpie

Out. But at least her hair looks shiny!

  • vitaminC

    Bored now.

  • Rick Diehl

Out, the whole outfit is just shapeless.

  • altalinda

    Acceptable, but not great. Out.

  • MilaXX

OUT – somehow the dress looks a size too big and the shoes are too heavy for the dress.

  • trisker

OUT all around bad. HATE the fingernails. I’ll be glad when this trend passes…

  • Eclectic Mayhem

That smile renders the whole thing an IN. (I’m powerless against Willow).

  • Trickytrisha

Out of course. She’s a doll, but those seams over her boobs make them look like tennis balls.

  • Sara__B

    Meh. Neither in nor out.

  • elemspbee

OUT. It’s really all kinds of wrong. Again I ask, this shape–who does it fit/flatter?

  • Sofia

out. this dress needed some genius tailoring to make it fit her perfect little bod instead of leaving it looking like she is swimming in it. there’s too much fabric on the sides and in the skirt. then she needed showy turquoise colored earrings

  • teensmom99

OUT. Just not a great dress. I do want the shoes and I promise I would wear them with the right accessories.

  • jennifromcali

OUT! Neither I nor anyone I know would personally wear this!

  • jbontrager78

OUT. The pleats look weird and the whole dress seems ill-fitting. Nail Polish is heinous.

  • Jennifer Bober

Out. The shape just doesn’t work. A “Buffy” binge…’cause I just couldn’t love you guys more!!!

  • KendraMR

OUT. That dress does nothing for her; it makes her look wider than what she is. Although I love her haircut, it looks too shiny and stiff. Maybe it’s the lighting, or it could be too much product.

  • KT

No no no. That dress is ugly and cheap-looking. I’m actually kind of digging the quilted fabric trend of late, but this is not the way to execute it. The dress looks really heavy and too big on her – especially in the waist. It’s obliterating her figure and making her look larger than she is. The shoes are not doing anything to make this look more fresh or youthful, and those nails are a CRY FOR HELP!!!

Her hair looks nice, though. Very shiny.

  • SRQkitten

Out. The nails were just too much and the rest of the look is meh.

  • Jangle57

My first thought was the waist is too high, making her look boxier than I’m sure she is. And you are right about the fabric. OUT

  • Fuchaforever

OUT. This is a dress belongs in FLOTUS’s closet, not your Alyson!

  • LaSylphide

Out. I like the idea of the pleated skirt and the black band, but it simply doesn’t work with that unflattering bodice. It’s like they ran out of ideas after the skirt.

  • Richard Banger

I was MAJORLY surprised when i scrolled down and found out that she’s wearing a knee-length dress. In the first picture she looks like she’s wearing a baggy top and a baggy maxi skirt.

I love her, but this is an OUT.

  • Myra Amler

Out!!!! Fit is deplorable and you are absolutely right about the nails.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. I think the fabric might work, but by its [apparent] nature, it stands out from the body a bit and holds a shape. So it should have been more narrowly tailored to her body, and any stiff, volume-creating pleats should have been corralled at their top and should not have started so high on the hip.

Shoes are o.k., but they don’t go with the dress.

Pity, because she is adorable AND pretty in a way that women about to turn 40 hardly ever are, even in the trompe l’oiel world of celebrity appearance.

  • Her make up looks terrible and she has armpit stubble.

  • CB

OUT. The center part only works for very few people.

  • SorayaS

The nails look fungal and the dress belongs in Michelle Obama’s wardrobe (at least we know she will pair a belt with it as needed!). Her head looks adorable and I like the shoes but poor form from neck to ankle rules it OUT.

  • largishbearishAtlish

out. whats with the hair? greasy or greying? she needs some sleeve or something (or a bit of a spray tan?). I agree about the weird hips thing… she wears better clothes on her show…

  • E. D.

Everything is wrong, except her hair color.

  • MzzPants

No. It gives her no shape and the color does nothing for her. Out.

  • SierraDelta

OUT. Her nails look like the point of origin for a deadly new keratin fungus.

  • Kamilaa

    Bored Now.

  • Carly Clement

IN IN IN! I am almost 5ft 10 and I would rock this dress!!!

  • LeelaST

OUT. Hate the nails, hate the shoes. I don’t mind the loose fit, the dress is cuter than I thought after the first photo. Maybe a black belt?

  • OUT. Although she is trying, hard, to sell this. Her smile seems very genuine, but the ensemble is failing her.

  • Peeve

The first thing out of my mouth was, “Oooh, I hate the nails!” And ditto for the other comments. Plus, I don’t really think that white-white is really her color. So, an out for me.

  • mickiemonkey

OUT! She needs color, sleeves, lipstick, and not a dress made of bedspread material!

  • msdamselfly

That part in her hair looks like Eddie from the Adams Family

  • saintebeuve

Not a favorite, but if she was sitting on stage in a director’s chair (and under harsh lighting to boot), like they do at some PaleyFest events, I could see how the skirt would drape nicely and she wouldn’t have to worry about it scooting up.

  • Miss wks

Vnecks look good on only a few people. If the neckline woulda been squared off at the collarbones it woulda been much cuter and would prevent the eye from thinking she has saggy breastezez. Also, dress would been hella cuter if the color blocking was reversed- black on top/white on bottom. The end. Do I get extra credit for showing my work, teacher?

  • VicD

Dammit, it hurts to do it, but … out. The dress does nothing for her, the shoes are awful, the nails remind me of a peeling christmas ornament, and hair and makeup are perfect for the grocery store or a day at home doing nothing. This just doesn’t work and she deserves better.

  • barbarienne

OUT. That heavy fabric is awful.

This isn’t the first heavy-fabric dress we’ve seen this month. What is going on here? Too many designers taking that scene from GWTW literally? If you’re going to use drapes to make a dress, at least use good quality velvet instead of the curtains from a Motel 6.

  • NinjaCate

OUT. Hiddy from tip to toe.

  • LadyLuck777

Out. The top looks like it was made out of those generic white blankets they keep in the warmer at the emergency department.

  • marlie

This seems so shapeless on her. Maybe a belt would have helped? And I hate the nails. I’m usually more forgiving than the uncles, but these are ugly. OUT.

  • quiltrx

If it were a different fabric and the upper portion were a COLOR, I think I might like this. As it is, OUT.

  • Ron Zank

Out. Especially that Motel 6 upholstery fabric. Is it asbestos?

    • Gatto Nero

It’s awful and heavy — and the pleating makes it worse.

  • BrooklynBomber

Eh. It’s harmless. (Except the nail polish, which is harmful.)

  • CupcakeTrudy

This has got to be a dress from Anthropologie. One of their lines uses this fabric, which I think works for winter wear, but not so much for summer/spring. Plus the store is, for whatever reason and much to my sorrow, obsessed with too high waists.

  • Gatto Nero

The nails are horrible. And it took precious time to get that effect.
Dress is heavy and makes her look shapeless.

  • katiessh

OUT. it’s not bad per se, but it is boring. I DON’T like her nails

  • venusvelvet

No, no and no on the top. It looks like a banquet table.

  • crash1212

Even if I liked the dress, this would be a total out just because of those heinous nails. Blech! As for the dress….maybe it could’ve been saved with s thin belt? And perhaps if she could get the cure for her allergy to freakin’ accessories – would a necklace, earrings and maybe a lovely cocktail ring kill her? And if she’s wearing earrings, maybe next time wear some we can actually see. Yeah..this is an OUT.

  • Susan Velazquez

OUT sorry. Even Season 1 Willow would have agreed that this dress is awkward looking.

  • IN… barely. Yeah, it’s a little bland and the nails are terrible, but I think it’s a cute dress.

  • BayTampaBay

  • Liz

Out, I’m getting aunt at a bar mitzvah.

  • V No Privacy

Fit the dress to her waist, throw on a good belt. Better makeup, hair, and jewelry. LOSE THE NAILS. Then I will forgive it (but still not love it).

  • carnush

It’s the shoes that make me sad. OUT.

  • Tanya Wade

As Willow herself would say, “Bored now.”

  • Jessica Freeman

OUT. It’s all a bit too meh, and the lack of jewelry bugs.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Out. Could have maybe been saved with a belt and different shoes.

  • ojosazules

The top half of this dress is so horrible. Among other things. Out.

  • StarburstLady

Jeez, that’s terrible. It just looks to me like the dress is about two sizes too large for her. And the shoes are awful, hands down. And I think she could have done with some stronger make-up. OUT.

  • cocohall

Minnie Mouse called and wants her shoes back. . . .

  • OhSheila

OUT. The waist of the dress is either too low or too high, the width of the straps is certainly too wide to my liking. The shoes don’t go with the dress, and it’s dreadfully boring to part your hair directly down the middle.

  • gsk241

It’s not great, but I don’t think it’s all that terrible. A belt would have helped…. maybe. I’ll give her a tentative “in” because she’s so darned adorable.

  • ovarB

Out. The heaviness of the fabric combined with the pleats just steers this into the wrong direction.

  • lunchcoma

Ugly dress with prom shoes. Yeah, someone I know would wear this, but people I know aren’t millionaires with access to free clothes and stylists.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Out. Poor fit.

  • KinoEye

Out. The pleats make it look like it’s the most boring Ice Capades dress in the world, the shoes make her stumpy, and the nails. Good night alive, those nails. They look fungal. Again, I say — OUT.

  • Constant Reader

OUT. As you pointed out, the waist sits too high and the nails are atrocious. Also, I will sign off on the black band because it takes away from the “Tennis Anyone” vibe, but it needs to extend to a hem at about mid-knee. The shoes need to be simpler. Finally, I would give unto half my kingdom for a statement necklace with a pop of color here.

  • TheLaurenJean

Out. I do know people who would wear this in the real world, and none of them should be giving fashion advice to anyone.

  • melanie0866

    it’s Eh. Nails are tacky.

  • Michelle Gennari

Out. And boring as all get out.

  • MissFern

better makeup and i could have been ok with this.

  • ellatheingenue

I really do not like her haircut on her, for some reason.

  • Guest

I was too distracted by “Buffy Binge”, which is always such a good idea that I’ve given her a pass and run off to watch her dress up as a hooker the first of the Halloween eps.

  • Prudentia

I am so distracted (and elated) by your “Buffy Binge” that I’ve decided to give her a pass and instead watch the first Halloween ep wherein she dresses like a hooker AND a ghost. Sorted.

  • lamamu

OUT! But I do like her hair.

  • OUT. All I can see are boobs and dowdy pleats. Plus ugly shoes.

  • MartyBellerMask

I’m thinking if she had a little black shrug or something, this could be really cute. However, she has no shrug, jacket, or cardigan, so this is OUT.
And a BIG no, never, ever on the nails.

  • lesmaha

Out, but reluctantly. Maybe if it were a different fabric.

  • lobsterlen

Doesn’t it seem there has been a lot tennis dress formal wear lately?

  • Alloy Jane

Out. Nails are horrible, hair is boring, face is ok but kinda plain, shoes are ugly, and that dress is not aesthetically pleasing or figure flattering. It’s a quilted smock with a bed skirt attached. Actually, make that an OUT.

  • GeoDiva

Out….it is ugly and too big.

  • Megan Kennedy

OUT. The fabric is bizarre and the white is washing her out.

  • Nexli B

Her head looks great! The rest of this I want to like but, no, I just can’t.

  • demidaemon

OUT. It’s really unflattering at first glance. Then, you see the fabric, the clunky shoes, etc. It’s too bad, really.
