Emily VanCamp for ELLE Canada Magazine

Posted on March 07, 2014

Emily VanCamp is ready to kick your ass in 4-inch heels. Or at least that’s how she looks here. Then again, that’s how she looks a lot of the time.

Revenge-Emily-VanCamp-ELLE-Canada-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)“Revenge” actress Emily VanCamp covers the April 2014 issue of ELLE Canada magazine in a Christian Dior top and Burberry skirt photographed by Colette de Barros and styled by Petra Flannery.

On being described as the girl next door: “I’m nothing like the girl next door. When you think of her, you think of a strong moral compass and a wholesome upbringing, but my life has been anything but conventional or normal. It’s a really odd way to be described by people who don’t really know you. I kind of preferred, as I entered into the Revenge and Captain America realm, the bad ass thing that people were talking about. Maybe that’s a little more like me.”

On the pressure to look good: “I can definitely feel the pressure looming, but I really do try to avoid it because I think there’s a little bit of an addiction that comes with it. I don’t want to spiral down that path. It’s kind of like getting a tattoo—people want more.”

On the paparazzi in LA: “It’s the weirdest and most annoying thing. I don’t think actors who are working should ever complain—there are shitty parts, but you deal with it. I grew up in the countryside, though, so I like to go to the grocery store in my sweatpants or maybe even take it to the level of going to the store in my onesie. But I can’t do that anymore. [Laughs] Or, for instance, I stole my sister’s really comfortable sweatpants and took my garbage out in them and was caught by the paparazzi, so I had to give them back!”

Okay, some of these getups are pretty, shall we say … editorial, but we love what she’s wearing on the cover.

We forgot until she mentioned it here that she’s going to be in the next Captain America movie. That’s good, because we miss her and we’re really not likely to get back into Revenge after spending a season and a half away because the plots were getting too complicated. We’re ready to see if she’s got the chops to kick ass on the big screen.

Man, you guys. I really hate that cover. It’s like everything they warned us about (for those of us that don’t remember) the 80s. First and third inside images, I’m digging, though.

      • Anna

The first inside image should’ve been the cover.

        • uprightcitizen

I agree it’s the best shot, by far. The blue jacket and coral lips set against what is almost a black and white image otherwise is stunning. The way it’s shot, it was probably a contender for the cover, but the flyaway hair is really tricky to cut out and have in front of the title type, without it looking pasted on, and her right arm makes the cover headlines hard to place. Having art-directed a few magazines, I can tell you that the cover photo choice often has less to do with what the art director and editor think is the best picture and more to do with what ends up working with the other elements that have to be on a magazine cover. The saving grace (for an art director) is that when you have to scrap the beautiful pic because it doesn’t work on the cover, you reward the reader by using that stunning image inside the magazine.

          • Anna

Ah, interesting. I’ve wondered that about other images I’ve seen inside magazines that I thought would’ve made great covers, but what you’ve pointed out from the art director perspective makes perfect sense.

      • KateShouldBeWorking

I wore a top like that on my first day at a new school. In 1989.

      • ConnieBV

Me too! It’s a Heathers outfit, and that stopped being cute when Christian did.

        • uprightcitizen

Now that you say it, I can’t un-see the Heathers thing. That jacket is Shannen Doherty’s character, for sure … just needs a croquet mallet.

          • KateShouldBeWorking

She would definitely have the red scrunchie.

      • leahpapa

        It looks dreadfully cheap, no?

      • Sofia Bentivoglio

i hate the cover too. it’s too much “outfit” for her. as is the lace granny panty thing. her looks are much better offset by simpler styles, like the second inside image. she is owning that miniskirt and that interesting but simple top, which doesn’t compete with her face.

      • marlie

The jacket on the cover is FUG. I hate that crap at the bottom of it.

    • hughman

Not digging the 80s vibe. She looks like a missing member of Wilson Phillips.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

        Owen Elliott?

      • leahpapa

Yep. I was warned that someday, somebody gonna make me wanna turn around and say goodbye. That day was today.

    • butterflysunita

I often find celebrity quotes unreadable, but hers are pretty smart and down-to-earth.

    • Jessica Freeman

Not feeling any of the clothes or the lighting treatment. But girl has got some serious legs.

      • @Biting Panda

All that. And I hate the orange lip color.

        • Dam_Angel

And they used the same lip color with every shot. Odd choice.

    • Imasewsure

One women… four looks!! It can be done by a non-model. Props pretty lady… quotes are good too

    • sugarkane105

Her arms look very awkward on the cover. But I love the third shot.

    • French_Swede

LEGS!!! Wow, she’s got beautiful legs.

    • Anna

Love the earrings in the first inside picture, can’t stop staring at them. And I love her answer to question 1, great interview overall.

      • Grumpy Girl

Oh I want those earrings. Those may be the only thing I like in these photos . . . although I want a better look at that jacket she is holding by her side in the third pic (if only to obscure the tap pants).

        • Anna

Yes, that jacket also looks like it has potential. Wish that had been more prominently featured instead of the glorified hot yoga tank and tap pants.

The earrings are for sure my favourite part of the photos.

    • GeoDiva

Love the 3rd shot. Otherwise the lighting makes her even more pale than what she is.

    • ryenerman

Looking at the third picture I thought that is a stupid shirt and those are terrible shorts. How is she making that work? The whole thing is preposterous, but she’s carrying it off.

      • Rhonda Shore

She’s hot. Especially in the second shot, the one in front of the map with the blue jacket.

      • Sabin

        Very 80s Kelly LeBrock

    • MoHub

I would kill for that cover jacket.

    • Alyssa

Her answers are the rarity that don’t make me mad. I don’t really care for these outfits, but the jewelry is amazing! Looking forward to seeing her in Captain America.

    • Qitkat

She sounds as if the Hollywood machine has not yet quite changed her into a talking robot. I like that about her. I also like that she doesn’t seem too over-exposed, from my limited point of view. That may change with the Captain America movie. I love her in everything here, even the granny panties, since it’s editorial. Skin and long legs to die for. Great cover. She always photographs so well.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I love that she got caught wearing her sister’s pants and had to turn them back because she took them without permission and was photographed by papparazi!

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Am I crazy or is she working the high-wasted, blousy shorts?

      • Jessica Freeman

Her legs are working the high waisted blousy shorts.

    • MilaXX

I only like the cover shot. I’ve had my eye on a similar striped skirt from ASOS.
Her interview sounds like a bunch of celebrity BS. I gave up on Revenge a long time ago and ABC moving it to 10pm isn’t doing much to convince me to go back.

      • E2_Remote

Glad I wasn’t the only one annoyed by the bland answers she gave in that interview.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Now if she’d said “you think of a strong moral compass and a wholesome upbringing, but my life has been anything but moral” I would’ve been interested!

    • mshesterp

I’m re-watching Everwood Season 4, and it’s so funny to think of little Ephram-loving Amy Abbott being an ass-kicker. Who knew! I think she looks great in all of these (sans lipstick–that’s a wretched color). I don’t watch Revenge anymore, but I do love previews when she’s busting someone up. Go Amy.

      • Tatiana Luján

She will forever be Emily for me.

    • E2_Remote

That cover outfit looks like Dior ripped off the top of a Formula 1 driver’s suit. Keep the skirt, add a helmet, and she could be Top Gear’s first (confirmed) lady Stig.

    • RussellH88

Revenge has really returned to its soapy roots and I am all the happier because of it.

      I love the cover.

      • sagecreek

Yeah, but all the hiatuses (hiati?) are about to kill me, I keep losing the thread!

    • formerlyAnon

I hate that jacket on the cover. And I’m pretty much a whore for jackets, especially those fitted to indicate a waist. Did I say hate? Maybe, I should rethink. Yeah. DETEST. (flaws: Major: complicated pointless wtf-ery at center waist, lopsided-looking breast darts, stupid faux military badges. Minor: baby blue, peekaboo waist on a long-sleeved jacket.)

She’s either smarter than average or been practicing her interview skills with a publicist.

      • guest2visits

uhoh…. if not for the stupid crisscross feature…. I would love this thing! The color is gorgeous and I don’t mind the silly insignia.
Oh well. What really needs to be seen is the tweedy jacket she’s just swinging around, it’s probably the only worthwhile piece and no one can see it.

    • omg_dora

    • CPK1

      loving the matte coral lip

    • marlie

Emily looks really good here. I’m not a fan of some of the clothes, but she’s giving good face. Though I will have the earrings she’s wearing in the first two pictures.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

HUGELY looking forward to Captain America. They’ve kept info on her character very much under wraps – she’s barely even in the trailers – but apparently she’s the female lead rather than Black Widow… So, is she Sharon Carter or Sin? Place your bets everyone…

Oh and – the third picture down? Blimey! As my father would always say re: Cyd Charisse: “Her legs go all the way up to her arse and back down again.” It’s a compliment, honestly.

    • judybrowni

Wow, what’s with the fug pale blue granny pants and lace fug?
