Emilia Clarke for Glamour France Magazine

The Mother of Dragons gets to put on cute face for Glamour France.

Emilia-Clarke-Glamour-France-Game-Thrones-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)“Game of Thrones” actress Emilia Clarke covers the April 2014 issue of Glamour France magazine photographed by Jason Kim and styled by Virginie Benarroch.

On filming: “The entire season begins filming in June until December, touring Morocco, Iceland, Croatia and Ireland. When we start we get the whole story so we know who’s going to go where. [Laughs]. In general, I arrive on the set at 3 AM. A hard day’s filming on average is 12 to 18 hours because there is a lot of preparation in my case.”

On whether or not the cast gets to watch Thrones before its release: “No, nobody receives the DVD before the broadcast. I will watch Season 4, on TV like you. I’ll just hide behind the sofa when I appear on screen.”

On binge watching series like the rest of us: “If I’m obsessed, I can easily spend three days secluded at home to watch it. But I try to put limits on myself to truly appreciate them.”

On understanding the Game of Thrones obsession: “But it’s great, it’s like watching a ten hour movie. You live with the characters and you have the time to understand their history and journey. There is room for the heroes grow and flourish. You can detest a character for three episodes and love them later … as in life.”

On being one of the first of many complex female heroines on television: “Finally, the producers realize how exciting it is to have a central female character in a series. It there’s so much to write and say about women, it is a vast territory to explore. This is an interesting time and I am very lucky to be part of this generation. Our role, through these characters, is to convey a message to all those girls who today are under enormous pressure: stay yourself. And you, the viewer, you can watch all these series that tell you yes, everything is possible.”

On being close with the cast: “We’re a very close family, particularly the band kids: Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Rose Leslie, Alfie Allen and I. This is our first big role for all of us. Rose is my best friend, I see Kit all the time, Harry Lloyd is a close friend, Jason Momoa, it’s like my family when I come to LA.”

She’s really cute here, although it’s hard to tell the outfits apart. There’s no range in the styling.

Not to be bitches or anything (shut it), but she’s doing more emoting in this spread than she’s done on three whole seasons of Game of Thrones.

      >but she’s doing more emoting in this spread than she’s done on three whole seasons of Game of Thrones.

      YES.

      • scoobynacks

I got way behind on Game of Thrones to the point that I can’t get hissy about spoilers, but I do know that every time I see a shot of her, she’s staring off into the distance with the same expression on her face.

      • StarburstLady

So, contrary to what this article says, I don’t find her character particularly complex. I suppose it’s a character that’s shown some kind of growth, but there’s something so cliche and perhaps a bit Mary Sue-ish about a character who is treated abysmally early on, and then becomes an avenging angel. I actually think she’s the most boring character on the show. I’d take Sansa, with her impure emotions and realistic faults, over Daenarys any day.

And I really hated the whole thing where a large group of slaves goes “We are so indebted to you, the white woman who freed us, that we will be YOUR slaves now!”

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

The most sweeping moments that had me Khaleesi Krazy (I went double k, no apologies) always have to do grand cinematography (Khaleesi on the boat, Khaleesi freeing the slaves, Khaleesi arising naked from a bath). I am inclined to agree with you, especially after hearing reviews for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. All I know is, I cannot wait to see my favorite characters again – Ser Jorah and Gendry’s Torso.

In all fairness, I kinda hate Danearys in the books, so I’m predisposed not to like her in the show. I love Emilia, though. She really seems to be a doll in person. I imagine that It’s tough to play a character who’s supposed to be considered heroic and righteous, when she’s so profoundly stupid about pretty much everything.

      • Hermitage

I never read the books, but, just from the show, I figured Danerys (sp?) kind of has perma-ptsd from her time with Viserys. She had the same thousand-yard gaze when he stripped her and told her he’d let the entire Dothraki clan take her if that’s what it took for him to get the Iron Throne. I don’t think she’s done any emoting since she was a kid.

It made her almost childish reaction to having her dragons stolen (“Where are MY DRAGONS!”) seem believable. She literally doesn’t seem to know how to display emotions like an adult, presumably because she’s never really had the chance.

Of course, the books probably say something completely different. But that’s my fanwank, and I’m sticking to it.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I can get on board with that!

    • Glam Dixie

Haha, Uncles, that’s mean. The pictures are meh, but god she is beautiful.

      • Funkykatt

And that hair! Much better brunette.

        • Glam Dixie

          Agreed!

        • judybrowni

          Yes!

    • littledamnhero

I enjoyed the interview questions she was responding to. They were actually about her work, interesting, and illuminating, as opposed to the usual “What’s your beauty routine?” or “As a actress, woman, and a human….” stuff.

      • pookiesmom

So true! Thank you, France! Glamour US, take notes!

        • shirab

I wonder what her quotes sounded like in the original interview, and if her tone has benefited from what I assume is the translation first into French for the magazine and then back into English. (Unless she speaks French and this was just translated once.)

      • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Or “what do you think about marriage/children/etc?”

    • @Biting Panda

      She is fucking gorgeous.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

        It is known.

    • Jacob Bowen

I just LOVE the neck-piece/cape combo in the last photo…WOW. And I would TOTALLY wear the shoes in that photo!

    • Zippypie

“Not to be bitches or anything (shut it), but she’s doing more emoting in this spread than she’s done on three whole seasons of Game of Thrones.”
And even with that being true, she emotes a hell of a lot more than Kit Harrington!!
She’s fucking gorgeous. So is Kit. So is 3/4′s of the GoT cast. Ah, can’t wait!

      • marlie

Kit rarely emotes on OR off the screen.

        • Madam Von Sassypants

Kit’s emote button is permanently set on “BROOD.”

      • Sobaika

To be fair, Jon Snow is sort perma-bummed while Dany has a much larger arc to portray. It stands out especially since most of the cast is very talented and very well-cast.

    • marlie

The clothes do nothing for me, but she is SO EFFING PRETTY!! Total girlcrush here.

    • Megan Kennedy

Agreed about the emoting — but, I think Daenerys is consciously trying to repress emotional displays, in order to appear more regal. Her restraint fits the character.

      • gabbilevy

True, and (book SPOILER-ish) allows her to have room to go when she starts to make more emotional decisions.

      • princessricky

agreed – I think its completely deliberate on the directors part. I remember being so surprised when I saw an interview with her in real life- even beyond the blond/brunette switch, she was so facially expressive she was unrecognizable to me at first

      • Laura Renee

There’s no excuse for the first season, though.

    • MilaXX

I love the clothes on the cover, but the other outfits are too similar in cut. She is so much prettier than Khalessi.

    • decormaven

Love the skirt in the cover shot!

    • Vaniljekjeks

She’s soooo adorably cute here, but in her defense, Daenerys Targaryen isn’t exactly an adorable bubbly character. I think she’s doing great.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

She is my favorite character. She has had to overcome the most (IMO). I love her.

    • Gatto Nero

      “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful …”

    • fursa_saida

It’s always a relief to see her with something approaching her own hair. The Daenerys wigs are so very wrong for her.

    • Dandesun

Those eyebrows are sooooo totally 80s!

My bro-in-law can’t stand Dany. My mother hasn’t gotten over Drogo. I think Dany’s story is important but she doesn’t do much except stare solemnly at people. However, I have coined the phrase ‘Getting my Khaleesi on’ to mean skinny-dipping in the hot-tub.

But, truth be told, I’m far more invested in the Stark girls. I hated Sansa in season one and now am rooting for her so so so hard. And I am living and dying for the arrival of the Martells.

The styling here is very one note though. But I love that star necklace!

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

They are so Brooke Shields. :)

      • Trickytrisha

The big, dark eyebrow thing is depressing as hell, hope the trend goes away, like now. Julianne Hough could be so damn cute, but… eyebrows.

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I love the Stark girls, expecially Sansa, because she’s on a journey for which she was totally unprepared and on which she has had to find her way without much help, while Ned’s indulgence of Arya has given her tools that she can use on her character’s journey. Plus, Arya has picked up a few allies along the way.

    • alyce1213

She has beautiful eyes, what a gorgeous girl.
The Franglais on the cover is so funny: “Accessoires trendy pour updater son style” and “star” (they used to say “vedette.”)

      • kimmeister

I’m mentally pronouncing “updater” in French and it sounds hilarious.

        • alyce1213

          Oop-dah-tay.

    • ballerinawithagun

Love the interview. I don’t watch GOT. The clothes look just like the inexpensive (let’s face it, cheap) clothes I could pick up at Toda Moda. I better run back down for that $8.99 skirt!!!!

    • kim bunchalastnames

why is her skirt in the cover photo wriggling with fuzzy little caterpillars?

      • HomeOfficeGirl

        omg I hate you now. can’t unsee…

        • kim bunchalastnames

          lol. sowwy.

    • Tanagra

She looks like a young(er) Kate Winslet in some of these photos.

    • Christina

The styling is decent, but combined with the boring and overdone setting (colorful motel and celebrity sitting on top of car) is really what makes this all so meh to me. And I can’t stand Dany and her white savior schtick, she’s probably the least interesting character to me. Emilia’s gorgeous though and I am envious of her eyebrows.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

T & Lo, have you already discussed (or is it in the book?) why so many photo shoots feature the crappy motel room??

    • titaness25

I want the jackets over the shoulder trend to die a fiery and painful death. Mainly because it’s a cop-out to what I desperately want- which is floor length capes so I can stalk up and down the street billowing dramatically in the wind.

But these pictures are beautiful- maybe they thought simple clothes would be a nice contrast to the beautifully detailed costumes her character wears?

    • Betsy

      She’s so cute.

    • deelup

The skirt has a black tampon fence pattern.

    • venusvelvet

She is such a breath of fresh air in comparison with pop stars like Miley, Madonna and Gaga, desperately vying to provoke attention with their tired shock tactics. I like the “be true to yourself” message.

    • PastryGoddess

May the brows be with you

    • quiltrx

These shots appear to have been taken at the locations of a low-quality horror film, of the sort shown on Chiller.

    • allcapsERINN

      She’s beautiful.

The inner child wants that (those?) star necklace(s?).

    • styrch

Pretty sure the lack of emoting on the show is a character choice. Danerys needs to appear strong.

    • what not

Aw, she looks like a normal (stunningly beautiful) 20-something. I love seeing that.

    • http://reneshiro.tumblr.com/ kingderella

Beautiful girl, and good interview answers. She seems unpretentious.
She looks a little generic, styled like this, tho. I do like the “goofy face”-pictures.

    • MissusBee

Who needs to emote when you have dragons to do that for you?

(I express my feelings a similar way. Just ask my kids.)

    • Clash D

Love the cover, very 80s Madonna with a twist. Photography-wise, I’d say she’s ‘projecting’ too hard for the camera.

    • Laura Renee

Ha! I looked at these pictures wondering if she’s gotten any better at acting since the two seasons I watched (I’m too much of a book fan to be able to handle what they’ve done to a lot of the characters, especially the women). I mean, Daenerys is my favorite character, it was unbearable to watch how this chick was portraying her. Thanks for settling that curiosity.

But she’s cute here, yeah. I like that last capelet she’s wearing.

    • SayWhaaatNow

Maybe it’s the magpie in me, but I J’ADORE the Game of Thrones-y cape in that last pic.

    • BKagainwiththesweatpants

GIVE ME THOSE SHOES in the final photo!!! LOVE!!!!

    • lobsterlen

Her real hair color is beautiful. Hope she never goes blond in real life.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Does anyone know who made that necklace?

      • Mathis

        Lanvin
