Emilia Clarke for FLARE Magazine

Posted on March 18, 2014

The Khaleesi does have herself some enviable eyebrows. It is known. But it is also known (at least to these two bitches) that she looks best when you play up the … shall we say, lushness of her looks. She’s big eyes, pouty lips and dramatic coloring. Sure, you can play up the brows, but you shouldn’t play down everything else. The effect looks unbalanced.

Emilia-Clarke-FLARE-April-2014-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Emilia Clarke covers the April 2014 issue of FLARE magazine in Burberry Prorsum photographed by Nino Muñoz and styled by Kemal & Karla, The Wall Group.

ON THE NEW SEASON OF “GAME OF THRONES”: “The whole of season four is dark and really emotional. If you asked any of the actors about this season, they’d say, ‘Oh no, my character’s got the best arc.’”

ON THE MISLEADING NATURE OF RED-CARPET GALLERIES: “There are no captions on red-carpet photos that say, ‘This girl trained for two weeks, she went on a juice diet, she has a professional hair and makeup person, and this dress was made for her.’ I just wish they’d say, ‘It ain’t the truth.’”

ON HER VERY EMBARRASSING “GAME OF THRONES” AUDITION MOMENT: “I get there, and I’m all dressed up to the nines, wearing a nice outfit with heels. I walk into an auditorium that’s got 50 people from HBO. I’m nervous like you wouldn’t believe. I had a Diet Coke right before I walked in, so I was buzzing. I said hello to each of the 50 people individually and walked down the steps, then fell over walking down.”

ON WHAT SHE LEARNED FROM HER STINT ON BROADWAY IN “BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S”: “I learned more doing Breakfast at Tiffany’s than I did during three years at drama school. Hearing the audience say something ridiculous—‘That’s not Khaleesi!’—and still getting back onstage … It strengthens you.”

ON HER NEW BLOCKBUSTER ROLE IN “TERMINATOR”: “This is the most physical transformation I’ve ever done. But I haven’t done anything before this—I’ve done Game of Thrones and that’s about it. With Dany, it’s all CGI dragons, so not much training is needed.”

She’s gorgeous, no doubt. It’s kind of hard to screw that up. But we’re really not loving the makeup here. It’s distracting from the clothes, which are better suited to her than these pictures suggest.

    Two words: lip stick.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

      It is known.

  • Danielle

    Pink eyeshadow should be banned.

It’s sad when the cosmetics are so focus-pulling, the fashion is ignored. But that’s what happened here for me.

  • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

I can’t get past the messy, sloppy, maybe crinkly maybe wet hair.

  • kmk05

Consumptive makeup again. Also, shower hair.

  • marlie

She has such great lips; the stylists missed an opportunity to really makes these looks sing on her.

  • gabbilevy

The cover isn’t terrible, but the only one that the makeup isn’t totally messing up is the final image.

    • kimmeister

The shoes on the cover are fairly terrible though.

  • Sarah

What a totally disparate set of looks. Old Timey Crochet, Superhero Girl, Interfacing & Tinsel, and Sad Grey w/Cape. And yeah, I’ll throw my vote in for lippy, too.

  • kimmeister

She’s pulling off that awkward Chanel surprisingly well.

Now I need to go look up who she’s going to be in Terminator (and what Terminator they’re even talking about). If she achieves Linda Hamilton guns, that would be amazing.

    • Sarah

I think it would look better without the matchy top, like the runway. Of course, she could leave the plastic coat to someone…else. ETA: Sorry, I realize the Chanel was the grey job. You are right. It looks better on her than the model.

      • kimmeister

I was referring to the last look, not the cover.

        • Sarah

They could’ve taken a whole row of doilies off the dress on the cover and it would have worked.

  • lexilexi

IMHO, she can pull a Jolie better than the original. Just lovely .. even in this shoot.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Give the Khaleesi back to the French.

  • MilaXX

HATE that cover. In fact I dislike most of these pictures. The only one even slightly interesting is the last one with the Channel. It’s not the best makeup, but at least the look has come interest.

  • sagecreek

She’s buzzing from one Diet Coke? I don’t even know what to say to that.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

      I know. AMATEUR.

    • @Biting Panda

I do. Coughbullshitcough. Lovingly, if course.

    • http://www.jaimieteekell.com/ Jaimie

      Please. Three.

    • Jane Patterson-McGuire

I’m guessing Diet Coke and no accompanying meal, frankly.

  • Nikko Viquiera

This pictures…ugh. Instead, I’ll focus on the interview. I love her answers, they sound sincere, if that makes any sense. I’m glad she acknowledges the use and importance of stylists and doesn’t pretend like she does it all by herself. I also like that she acknowledges that she hasn’t done much work other than GoT, shows a lot of humility. love her!

    • tereliz

She had me at “It ain’t the truth”. :)

  • Nicholas

Her eyebrows look like they’re wearing her in that shoot.

What a weird make-up job on her.

  • hughman

The clothes are kind of all over the board. 40s secretary! Cocktail waitress! Art project! Chimney sweep! I wish she (or her people) would pick one and focus.

  • Claudia Berry

She looks like a kid playing dress up in that sideways shot. Badly styled and she is gorgeous.

  • schadenfreudelicious

That’s a lot of pink on the cover, including what appears to be pinkeye….

  • Lori

That cover is way too much pink. And yes, the make-up is odd.

  • another_laura

I’m totally with T Lo on the makeup. But moving on, I really love her in that Chanel. I like the cover dress but not those shoes with it. Why couldn’t they take up the hem on that C Kane dress? I don’t like the Puglisi so much at all. So, two out of two? Not so bad.

  • BlairBear

    The Christopher Kane photographs beautifully.

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

    I think she looks good.

  • somebody blonde

    Her hair looks really strange.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Never match your dress to the cover.

  • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

As far as the fashion goes…. a real cluster of trendy, gimmicky nothingness!

  • PastryGoddess

I don’t know, Is it just me or are these pictures looking a bit flat?

  • crash1212

Blahing out her lips was a HUGE mistake. This is a big miss for me…I don’t even like any of the clothes. What a wasted opportunity for Flare. Of course, I’ve never heard of Flare, so maybe they blah out everybody’s lips. Big mistake Flare. Big.

  • EdgarAllenPwn

Just have to say, haaaaate it when her character is referred to as Khaleesi, her name is Daenerys guys.

  • Jacob Bowen

When her eyebrows are THAT accentuated and the rest of her face is blank they are all I can see…that cellophane dress with the neck fringe is NOT a good look.

  • VioletFem

This is such a strange editorial. She looks really good in most of the dresses (I’m not too crazy about the Chanel number), but they made some poor decisions in how they styled her hair and did her makeup. Also, I really like this interview. I find her response to the misleading nature of the the red-carpet to be refreshingly honest. Certainly more honest than the actresses who claim that they just eat burgers and Doritos all the time.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I do think she looks better as a brunette, but… These are the oddest pictures. Why make someone so interesting fade into the woodwork?

  • Trickytrisha

All I see is eyebrow. I’ll be sooo fricking happy when the trend is over.

  • DaringMiss

The Christopher Kane dress looks like one of the safe dresses in a Project Runway Unconventional Materials Challenge.

  • mrspotts66

    she’s beautiful!
    the clothing is hideous.
    seriously fug.

  • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Yes, I too have random tulle and cherry blossoms just lying around here. It is nearly spring. Of course. :)

  • cmargaretfabulous

I still like her better blonde.

  • cmargaretfabulous

    I still prefer the blonde.

  • Fuchaforever

GTAYD (girl those aren’t your dresses)

    That Chanel dress looks horrible!

  • Pennymac

    Cro-magnon chic.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Bam! There’s your next Bond girl.

  • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Too much pink in play here. Its not her bestie.

  • SewingSiren

I love the cover. The pale lip and the pink eye. All of it. And the iridescent Christopher Kane dress is perfect for a dragon girl. Perfect.

  • carnush

    That cover is a crime. It’s so…pink.

  • Jessica Freeman

Well they have proven that pink and all other washed out colors make her look unwell. I do love her red carpet comment.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

I’d love to see her do something over the top surreal, in the classic art movement sense of the word–there’s something Bjork-ish about her that seems to call for it.

  • kt

Goodbye to the pink eyeshadow, but the last two shots are gorgeous.

  • DinnerIsServed1972

That make up is a sin.

  • icm

At first glance of the cover shot i thought it was Miley Cyrus

  • judybrowni

“She’s got Ernest Borgnine eyes,” nope not the song we should be singing.

  • JynxTheCat

Gosh I Love the look – so soft and romantic but pixie fantasy.

  • RuthGo

That dress on the cover is to die for. Totally wrong shoes but the outfit is amazeballs.

  • julnyes

Personal Pet peeve – People who attend performances expecting actors to play the character they are well known for (or expect them to be that character) in a completely unrelated production. Argh, people are ridiculous.
