Cobie Smulders in Stella McCartney at the “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” Premiere

Posted on March 14, 2014

Hunh. We’re kinda disappointed.

Cobie Smulders attends the premiere of Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California in a Stella McCartney top and skirt accessorized with Casadei pumps, a Rona Pfeiffer cuff, Joan Hornig earrings, and rings by Dana Rebecca Designs and EF Collection.

There’s just … not much to it, is there? And we know we’ve said it a million times before, but we don’t think it’s ever been quite so apropos as now: BARBIE ACCESSORIES. We may need to coin a new term here. She’s not “pulling a Jolie,” because that term is all about not making the effort. She clearly tried to put something together here, but it all feels flat. The only reason she looks good is because she’s so pretty. And no, we can’t call this “pulling a Cobie” because there’s no possible usage of that phrase that doesn’t sound a little dirty.

That is one hell of a face. Next to Jolie, Kunis, I can’t think of other stars that have such a breathtakingly gorgeous face.

    • charlotte

      Lupita and Charlize maybe?

      • RussellH88

        Lupita has world-class bone structure.

    • mshesterp

And yet wastes it repeatedly with underwhelming fashion/styling choices. I like Cobie Smulders and think she’s talented (and her funny husband), yet she almost always irritates me on the RC with her blah style.

      • Kayceed

I can’t recall an image where I’ve thought she’s had her makeup professionally done – it never does justice to that face.

      • Nicole C

And she should shine! I LOVE her on HIMYM because she’s so freakin funny. I forget how pretty she is because she’s singing in a mall. And proud of it. I hope she has more roles coming in her future, and she’s certainly not helping herself by blending into a sea of B-listers.

      • Kristin McNamara

I’ve said for years that she’s always looked prettier to me in regular people, “day look” kind of make-up on HIMYM than she EVER has on the red carpet.

      • fursa_saida

It’s such a bummer. She’s so gorgeous, and so consistently poorly presented.

    • RussellH88

I think Robin Wright has a really great face.

This statement may be influenced by a dream I had last night in which I was friends with Claire Underwood.

      • Lucía Gavello

Silly you, Claire Underwood has no friends.

        • RussellH88

That’s the weird thing. Because I was aware of this in the dream, so every time we were together I’d think “I cannot trust this bitch, she’s going to do something to ruin my life”

          • Lucía Gavello

She’s going to fuck you UP and you won’t be able to take your eyes off her cheekbones.

    • filmcricket

She reminds me quite a lot of a young Courteney Cox. Dark hair, blue eyes, great bones.

    • kimmeister

      Aishwarya Rai.

    • Angela Bassett.

    • fursa_saida

Rosario Dawson, for my money. And Zhang Ziyi.

  • RussellH88

    Those are some Pepto Pumps.

    • decormaven

And a bubblegum pink clutch. Barbie accessories indeed.

      • ampg

I am so very sure I had those accessories for one of my own Barbies back in the 80’s.

  • Jacob Bowen

Had she done some big jewelry and ditched the pink clutch I would be perfectly happy with this, not stunned, but content. Also, I feel like the bust fits a bit low and I worry she might flash us if her dress was tugged on a tiny bit.

    • ampg

Also, better shoes, or at least a different color. This would be a great outfit for some real statement shoes.

      • Jacob Bowen

I’m not disgusted by the shoes (I LOVE a good bright color) but I could definitely see a different color working better.

  • JauntyJohn

Well… I love the shape. The silhouette is really flattering and gives some interest from a distance. I could live with the pink purse but a different color shoe would be my choice. NOT black, grey or white. I like the classic style though and hey, they fit. Half the time these poor gals look like they’re either about to step right out of them or are working some arcane toe binding practice.

While all the skin up top is beautiful and healthy looking, this is definitely the time and place for an amazing statement necklace.
(Truly adventurous fashion might have put a broach at the waist line, offset to the side, which complimented but did not “match” the statement necklace, but that would be asking too much of Colby I think, much as I love her.)

    • marlie

And credit where it’s due, this isn’t a Stella McCartney dress that is universally hated on sight. They just need to do something more with the accessories.

      • demidaemon

True, but SM still couldn’t help herself in adding that strange skirt seam that seems to have no purpose other than make you go, “What is that?”

  • makeityourself

Head is great but needed a stronger earring. Dress is lovely but needed a different shoe and bag. Basically a fail on the accessories. That pink just sucked all of the elegance and sophistication out of the look.

  • MilaXX

add a belt, recolor the shoes black and this could work.

  • Akemi

    Ugh, snore.

  • Sarah

She needed a big necklace and different accessories. That dress looks like one of the convertible numbers from Under the Gunn last night – like she could fold that hip-yoke thing up and maybe something less boring would be underneath.

    • kimmeister

Totally, like Asha’s, with the same weird volume issues.

  • suzq

I looked at the front of the skirt and started to have gaucho flashbacks from 1976.

I like the idea of the skirt and where Ms. McCartney was trying to go with it. I’ll leave it at that. Pink and black are very classic when someone is pretending to be “pretend French” or something. But with all that black, two accessories with all that pink look tacked on. It would have been nice if either the shoes or the clutch had sported a pattern. I pick the shoes because I hate matte pink shoes.

I’m not digging the side pony here. Cobie’s hair isn’t long enough.

    • formerlyAnon

I was wondering when someone was going to dislike that dress as I do.

    • Pennymac

Just got traumatized by your gaucho reference, thanks.

    • Is it a side pony? I was trying to figure that out. I thought she was copying Lena Headey’s very unflattering hair.

  • DominoEstella

WTF with her hair. It looks like my 7 year old’s hair when she rolls out of bed.

  • NMMagpie

That seam on the skirt is kinds of wrong.

  • Cyprienne Zed

That snapping sound you hear is the stiletto heels giving way. They look totally brittle and I’m worried.

  • bunnybstuff

    These shoes match JLo’s outfit!

  • DTLAFamilies

Considering the visions that were dancing in my head when I read “Cobie Smulders in Stella McCartney” this is pretty good.

  • another_laura

The dress is so darned dull. Dull, dull, dull. Even the best accessories might not be able to save it.

  • kmk05

Switch the pink shoes to red, and maybe a metallic or black bag, and it would be good. I would vote for a blingy necklace a la JLaw from the Oscars.

  • mmebam

*wrests her shoes from her feet and hurls them into the river*

  • Lizzie B

Why am I craving Good & Plenty all of a sudden?

  • Alyssa

This is SCREAMING for a necklace. I love pink, but she should have either chose the shoes or clutch (the correct answer being clutch). Maybe a patterned shoe?

  • Danielle

I didn’t even have to open the link to know I’d cringe. Why, Stella? Why?

  • kimmeister

That’s a tube top. You can wear that lounging around the house, but not to a movie premiere.

    • Sarah

A low-riding neoprene (?) tank top, at that. Without a shelf bra, it would appear.

  • Deb_Lynn

The skirt kinda looks like a $15 cheapo designer knockoff. ETA: OHHHHHHH It’s stella, it all makes sense now.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

The top half is a little boring but beautiful… If you scroll so that you can only see the bottom half in the first full shot …. I mean… it looks like the skirt and apron part of a hostess uniform for some Texas steakhouse with pink menus.

  • Loola234

    Love the lip color.

  • The heels on those shoes look like they will snap off at any moment. This is a big icky mess, and adds to my growing suspicion that her career success so far rests largely on that striking face.

  • She is ‘smuldering’ – looking very pretty due to being very pretty, not because of any efforts from her part despite actually making an effort.

  • Jessica Freeman

This is forever 21 for the over 40. Its bland, poorly done, yet trying to look expensive. Hot pink was not the right ‘pop of color’ she needed.

Also, it’s Stella so: of course.

  • Stella Zawistowski

Well, for Stella McCartney “zzzzzz” is miles better than what I usually have to say, so there’s that.

  • marlie

Is today “Boring Dress Day”? Cobie’s makeup and hair look pretty, though. And yes, Barbie accessories. Ugh.

  • Lori

I read “Cobie Smulders in Stella McCartney” and literally said, “Oh no” out loud. Obviously it could be much worse, but it really is just a big old blah pile of nothing. The top and bottom don’t really go together. The skirt looks like I sewed it and the shoes are just stupid. She is extremely pretty though.

  • Lilak

Hoo-rah for the comeback of the pink lip, generally! Esp. nice here with her eye color and ‘vacation glow’ skin tone. Purty lady.
(Just wish she had ditched all that other pink stuff.)

  • teensmom99

Is it a crime to wear a necklace when your showing so much above-the-collar skin? Cobie, I’m asking you.

  • msdamselfly

I Love everything but the pink shoes and purse. I think the dress is dramatic in its simplicity and fits her beautifully. Also great hair and makeup

  • crash1212

What is that….a tube top and an funky A-Line skirt combo? Hate it. I can totally get behind a simple black dress with those killer shoes, but not with the matching purse. She is beautiful.

    • formerlyAnon

Thank-you. I was about to type/spew my distaste for this dress, and now I will have compadres.

  • icm

    She really is stunning

  • formerlyAnon

Unlike most, apparently, I think this dress is somewhere between trademark Stella McCartney awkward and flat out awful. On my monitor, it looks like a skirt with a black tube top. A skirt that has an odd yoke which creates a gaucho pants illusion. No.

  • Cheryl

I HATE those shoes and clutch. Barbie Accessories indeed! That said without those ugly accessories she’s really quite lovely. Yeah, I get the dress is a little underwhelming, but still beautiful. It almost makes me think the ugly accessories were put there just to make it interesting, although in a bad way.

  • Pennymac

McCartney proves once again that she can design really simplistic, ugly outfits. The very few “not too ugly” McCartneys of awards season were anomalies, just as I suspected.

  • Clash D

Love the hair, love the make up, love the earring(s).
Hate the dress, hate the bubblegum shoes and matching purse.

  • littlestars

The top isn’t super flattering, but she looks pretty great as a whole. Those shoes need to be burned, though. The heel is kind of cool, but the color is unfortunate. Hmmm…I can accept it for the clutch, but not the shoes – why is that?

  • KinoEye

She’s lucky she has an incredible face. It almost makes up for the ho-hum dress and lack of (non-Barbie) accessories.

  • Mightiadd

The basic silhouette of the dress is fine but up close you see a cheap flimsy tube top, heavy looking skirt, and poorly sewn seams. Smulders is gorgeous and Stella is still a third rate designer (too kind?).

  • largishbearishAtlish

  • The mid section of that skirt is nasty! She’s beautiful…but needs to loose the pink shoes…can live with the pink clutch….

  • Jecca2244

this is so ugly. who wants down smushed boobs??

  • I actually love it. Not trying too hard is ok sometimes… not in lurf with the shoe color, but she’s rockin’ it with the side swept hair. 10 points!

  • quiltrx

    Her head looks great.
The dress is such and odd-for-the-sake-of-odd nothing.

  • judybrowni

What the hell is going on with that skirt/skort whatthefuck with a vulva bib?

  • Aurumgirl

That skirt looks like it was cut by someone drunk. But Cobie still looks beautiful! Just poorly dressed.

    • dschubba

I don’t care if you have to drink and cut… but you have to drink and cut.

  • Gatto Nero

    Unflattering bodice, puckered seams, fugly.
    Yup, it’s Stella.
Also hate the bubblegun shoe and clutch.

  • gefeylich

She’s such a zero to me, despite the boner everyone else seems to have for her. No personality, a terrible “comedienne.” She’s pretty, yeah, but so are thousands of other women in Hollywood. I think this outfit sums her up perfectly: dull, unimaginative, overrated, a bit twee.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I know it’s simple and “blah”, but there is something fun and classic about it at the same time. I am LOVING the pepto pumps. Sorry guys.

  • LaSylphide

The top is boring, but that would be OK if it had been dressed up a little. The skirt looks poorly cut and poorly tailored. I do like that length, though. Mid-calf is very flattering with the right shoe style (i.e., not hooves).

  • sagecreek

Oh, dear, those are Payless shoes.

  • RuthGo

I kind of wish she had worn pants instead, that could have been equally plain but automatically more interesting because pants.

  • …Honestly, I think she would benefit from looking to KStew for style inspiration. Smulders has the face and coloring for an upscale-punk-rocker-chic aesthetic.

  • carlatheviking

Makeup = gorgeous! Hair = gorgeous! Everything else…eh.
