Cobie Smulders for Fashion Magazine

Posted on March 24, 2014

Are the first? No one’s come up with that cover line before? Dibs.

But truly, the woman does take an amazingly gorgeous picture:

Cobie Smulders covers the April 2014 issue of Fashion magazine in Etro photographed by Chris Nicholls and styled by George Antonopoulos.

On choosing her role on “How I Met Your Mother”: “I had to choose between three projects…I decided to go with How I Met Your Mother, which was the best call. I would’ve been so pissed off if I had gone the other way, don’t you think?”

On Robin’s character development: “Robin started off not being the funny one…at the beginning, she was the girl that the guy wanted. She eventually went through some emotional growth.”

On her Canadian-ness: “I never want to lose my Canadian-ness…and when I say Canadian-ness, I mean down-to-earth. I like being able to not take myself seriously and to not feel entitled.”

And these are not easy pieces to wear. In fact, we doubt very much she’d be able to make these looks, as they’re styled here, work on the red carpet or in any so-called “real world” setting. The clothes can work a lens almost as well as she can.

Cindy Crawford & Christy Turlington’s love-child. She looks beautiful! It’s not like anything she wears on the red carpet, but she should go with this softer hair and makeup.

      • kimmeister

I’m loving the strong eye makeup.

      • demidaemon

Agreed. She should hire this team for her RC appearances. Or someone who can do similar work.

    • hughman

A gorgeous actress wears clothes well. Color me shocked.

      • @Biting Panda

        Meow, Kitten!

      • shirab

I’d have to check w/the interwebs to be sure, but I think she was a model before she became an actress.

        • hughman

          Say it ain’t so! 😉

        • Kent Roby

If so, it makes her RC appearances (both makeup and clothing choices) all the more befuddling.

          • AnaRoW

Not really. Have you seen Tyra Banks on the red carpet? Or Heidi Klum?

            • Kent Roby

Tyra and Heidi always dress sexy (or, what they think is sexy); Cobie seems to be the opposite to me, like perhaps she wears funereal frocks in an attempt to say “I’m a Serious Actress, not a model”.
ETA: However, “How I Met Your Mother” isn’t exactly “Sophie’s Choice”, so I think she can stun on the RC without losing her audience.

            • demidaemon

I don’t think Tyra and Heidi have any differentiation between RC and regular clothes, if you get what I mean.

    • ChaCha_70

I’m getting 1983 Carol Alt. Gorgeous!

      • filmcricket

        Oooh, yes! Good one.

      • Vanessa Reyes

I just said something similar! She was one of my faves growing up : )

    • Julia

Could the Canadians come up with no better names for a fashion magazine than FASHION?

      • schadenfreudelicious

        We apologize….;)

      • Imasewsure

        Clothes Eh?

      • Maria Parramore

It looks like a fake magazine a character would be reading in a sitcom.

    • International Model

Start entitling yourself to more fashion, Cobie. You earned it.

    • MilaXX

Great pictures. That first look definitely looks runway only, but I think the second would work on the RC,

    • Wendi126

These clothes are gorgeous. Not my style and couldn’t wear them even in my best dream and I adore them. She’s stunning

      sadface for the model’s piggies!

      • PastryGoddess

        Yes! I was like woah

      • ballerinawithagun

Why did you have to point that out??? Oweee, oweee , oweee all the home!

      • SierraDelta

        JEEZ LOUISE!

      • CupcakeTrudy

I cannot understand this practice of runways showcasing shoes on feet that are at least a size too large to fit. Those flailing pinky toes make me cringe with sympathy pain. And aesthetically, I can’t even…
Lord knows the designers wouldn’t even THINK of showcasing a typical sample size dress on a larger model!
Diversity of clothing/shoe sizes and bodies would do the fashion industry a world of good.

    • Amel

She can wear clothes so beautifully, I wish she would do that JUST ONCE on the RC.

    • BlairBear

she is giving me shades of Michelle Dockery in the second photo

    • sienna elm

I absolutely love that Clover Canyon emsemble…but the thing that caught my attention most in this post is the Etro Spring model’s great toe escape!

      • RedRaven617

Ouch, that had to have hurt.

      • Coolekat

        Cannot unsee.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Point the toe, dammit! These wild clothes were exactly the right choice for her looks, she skews a bit boring when left to her own devices.

    • Isabel

A real cover! This editor needs to take over American Vogue.

      • Imasewsure

I think the new rule for American Vogue is that Kanye has to be somewhere on the page as well so that might not work… we should probably all hide out in Canada until this KK thing blows over!!

    • random_poster

I think this is the best I’ve ever seen her look. She’s so beautiful, and totally rocks this! Go Cobie!

    • Pennymac

That top and skirt shouldn’t work together, but wow, they’re amazing. Or she’s making them amazing. Either way, these are great shots!

    • Imasewsure

Never like her in anything but she looks amazing here.

    • @Biting Panda

      Wow. … .Wow.

      • SierraDelta

Those are the only two words I’ve been able to come up with either.

    • Jacob Bowen

If I was her I would pay someone to follow me around with the lighting from the cover photo. It is actually a pleasant surprise to see her look this good.

    • Julie Chase

I am going to miss my Robin Sparkles SO MUCH.

      Her face is ridiculous.

      • Anna

Let’s go to the mall, everybody!

        • demidaemon

          I irrationally love that song.

          • Anna

So do I. I’ve been doing the silent laughing thing randomly throughout the day today at, “I’m gonna rock your body ’till Canada Day,” whenever I think of it.

            • demidaemon

I first heard it on Let’s Dance. To be fair, there are many songs on that game that I would never have liked had I not danced to them (spastically) first.

            • Anna

Ha, that’s awesome! I’ve never played that game, but I would buy it just for that song. And there’s an embarrassing amount of songs that I developed a fondness for after dancing to them on a night out at a club.

            • demidaemon

It is crazy fun, especially if you play with another person (or persons) who you can laugh at it with.

    • what not

Well, way to go her for managing the balance of gorgeous and relatable. And while full eyeliner makes so many look squinty and dirty, it works on her (at least on that cover). Nicely done.

    • Kent Roby

Ha, I previously posted here that she needs to buy an “o” ( to be “Smoulders”); she certainly did for this cover!

    • understateddiva

Love the Etro dress. So much prettier than the weird bejeweled Prada that’s been on all the magazine covers.

    • procrastinatrice

      Breath. taken. away.

    • Rand Ortega

Can somebody PLEASE tell me why this vision isn’t Wonder Woman?

    • Missy

I totally thought this was Jennifer Connelly in the cover photo. That’s definitely a compliment.

    • BobStPaul

That second photo is freaking fabulous – it has an incredible painterly quality.

    • icm

      She is beautiful!

    • kingderella

Not loving the cyber-clevage on the cover, but the second picture is amazing!

    • marlie

The pictures are pretty, but she doesn’t look like herself here. Her cheekbones and jawline are practically gone, and those are her most defining features.

    • decormaven

Giving us style, giving us face, making it all work- these are what need to be seen in fashion magazines. [been too long at the Vogue Bitterness Fiesta]

    • Vanessa Reyes

Her cover photo reminds me of a Carol Alt.

    • MarissaLG

Gorgeous clothes, stunning photos, smart lady. What more could I want? (Maybe other than a cute pic of her cute hubs)

    • Fuchaforever

      I love Etro.

    • Clash D

That second pic is stellar fashion photography, I must say.
