Benedict Cumberbatch for the New York Times’ T Style Magazine

Posted on March 10, 2014

B Cum is here for all the ladies in the audience.

Benedict-Cumberbatch-T-Style-Magazine-New-York-Times-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Benedict Cumberbatch covers the latest issue of New York Times’ T Style Magazine photographed by Karim Sadli and styled by Joe McKenna.

On his looks: “I always seem to be cast as slightly wan, ethereal, troubled intellectuals or physically ambivalent bad lovers.

On people’s obsession with Sherlock: “I always make it clear that people who become obsessed with him or the idea of him — he’d destroy you. He is an absolute bastard.”

On playing a series of very smart characters: “I am so ready to play a really dumb character.”

B Cum is giving you the soft eyes and the pouty lips, ladies. B Cum just wants to get across how concerned he is that all your needs are being met. B Cum wants you to feel comfortable. And possibly funky.

These are absolutely the best pictures of him we’ve ever seen. There’s no real “style” on display as far as we can see, but that’s some primo lighting.

B Cum sounds like a gay rapper.

      • Aly

    • MW

They make a great double act with T.Hiddy.

  • Emily Dagger

I feel like they’ve photoshopped all the character out of his face.

    • jif

As well as about a decade’s worth of aging.

      • Kristin McNamara

I was gonna say he looks a lot younger than normal. I love the way he normally looks! What gives, TIME?!

    • amazinggrace

Yep, exactly. And all his moles on the neck are gone. Pictures are beautiful, but it’s not really him. Agree with the aging removal comment above, too.

  • thecitysleeps

Holy shit, how the fuck did they make him look so pretty, especially in that front page? I’m in love. I love you Ben, and your exceptional face. /sorry

  • Glam Dixie

I don’t see it. I don’t get it. The other bk’s can have my share.

  • Capt. Renault

He’d be excellent at playing a dumb character. Too bad Quixote would be another thirty years off, at least…

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

he played a rather er… simple, shall we say, young man in august osage county. the results were pretty great. he just makes you feel all the feels.

      • MartyBellerMask

Damn it. I truly had no reason to want to see that movie. Now I must. *sigh*

      • WendyD

He destroyed me with that performance. I was crying within the first 3 minutes of him being on screen.
And then he sings… *fans self*

        • MartyBellerMask

          Sweet mother of god.

  • gorghast

Good character actor. So ugly though.

  • Scimommy

Best lighting, or best photoshop? It’s a fine line. I like him more natural looking, but really happy to see him in such a high profile editorial.

    • lunchcoma

I’d say a little from column a and a little from column b. I also prefer the version with some lines.

  • James

I adore him! And these are some fantastic photographs. He looks especially alluring here.

  • Rachel

How fitting that I visited my uncles right after a Cumbers post became available. It is my fan-girl 6th sense. I think we all know where I stand with this particular British Komodo Dragon of a man. In case you don’t, he haunts my dreams, the space behind my eyelids, and possibly a large portion of my therapy sessions. And you’ll never hear my complain.

  • cheekypinky

Moar men in vests, please and thank you, Fashion Gods.

  • Sarah

Working the severe chiaroscuro look. I like that he said Sherlock’s a dick. Always seemed that way to me!

    • MartyBellerMask

Sherlock just needs a good spanking.

  • gabbilevy

Loved these photos when I saw them a few days ago! The interview makes me swoony… but then, that’s par for the course with him. J’adore.

  • Emily Giovanni

Whoever was lighting these pics has a strong preference for the left side of his face.

  • gayle

This is the first time I have found him attractive.

  • International Model

    >or physically ambivalent bad lovers

    AKA, Awkward Girl Gold

  • marlie

He looks so… pretty… and so young here. Not complaining, though.

    • Alloy Jane

They made him look like a pubescent male model.

  • @Biting Panda

Wow. Normally not my cuppa, but my lady bits are moved. That’ll do, Kittens. That’ll do.

  • Tigrrl

Meow? I’ve always thought he was interesting looking, but after recently watching Parade’s End and realizing that he is really a superb actor, he seems way sexier to me. Probably the voice does it for me, the same thing I have for Alan Rickman. Meow.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Right. I had never seen him act until Sherlock, so when I’d see the occasional post I always balked. No more…. sigh. I KNOW he would destroy me and I cannot help it…

      • Tigrrl

I think perhaps his hair in Sherlock is not flattering to his skull and features, if that makes any sense. I didn’t like the color in Parade’s End, but the cut was good, and he actually has a totally different voice than Sherlock, just low and polite and intense. Sigh.

    • Trickytrisha

Oh god… an Alan Rickman and Benedict Cumberbatch sandwich.

      • Tigrrl

I think my ovaries would explode.

    • RussellH88

I think he actually does an Alan Rickman impersonation.

      • WendyD

He does a very good one. Good enough that he’s voiced ‘Alan Rickman’ on The Simpsons.

    • formerlyAnon

His voice IS awesome. For the rest, his appeal for me is, inexplicably mostly absent. I am neverendingly frustrated by this, as theoretically he’s slap bang in my wheelhouse. (ETA: I will say that if you find a clip of him giggling, it slays me completely.)

    • Anne

He was always doing something funky with his mouth in Parade’s End. Which meant I was pretty much watching his mouth nonstop…

  • Anna

Fine, Benedict, YOU WIN, I’m one of your Cumberbitches. Now excuse me while I go freshen up the downtown.

    • @Biting Panda

Right? I find myself tempted to go check out posts and YouTube of him, so that I may crush properly.

      • Anna

For me, the slippery slope began when I clicked “Play” on the first episode of Sherlock on Netflix. My defences have been lowered with each subsequent editorial I’ve seen of him.

        • KinoEye

Exactly. I’ve always had slight reservations about his looks, but all of that was pretty much gone after Sherlock. This obliterates them completely. Seriously, he’s never looked better in stills. That photographer is a master of soft, flattering lighting.

          • Anna

He is dreamy here, the last photo with that souful gaze and the hair is giving me all kinds of feelings. He hasn’t quite usurped the top spot on my list, but he’s getting very close.

      • Jadorezrg

Fair warning watching his youtube interviews will inevitably make your heart explode and productiveness afterward will cease to exist

        • River

True story. This is my life. *sigh*

        • not_Bridget

I think YouTube has some interviews from the first series of Sherlock. There he is with his Sherlock hair, The Coat & The Scarf…. But he’s not in character. He’s charming & enthusiastic & animated.

Yes, he can do scary & intense & all that. But I’d love to see him in a romantic comedy……

    • Coleen

Right? If you need me, I’ll be… in my bunk. Freshening up. Again.

  • Laura Renee

    The alien has landed.

    • schadenfreudelicious

He and SWINTON need to play otherwordly alien siblings in something immediately…

      • Reneesance

I just need a moment alone with that thought…oh dear.

      • Laura Renee

Lol, that would actually be pretty cool, I think, if incredibly predictable. They should put in an appearance in some type of parody.

      • formerlyAnon

        Oh, I don’t know that I’d want them to be siblings . . .

        • schadenfreudelicious

My mind did go there I confess….kissing cousins perhaps?…

          • Jacob Bowen

Please no. My Grandma already thinks “Kissing Cousins” is a real thing…let’s not give her any more ammunition. My sister would appreciate it.

  • Roz

Nothing like standing by a window for good lighting. Seriously. Also, saw a photo of Rex Harrison the other day and B. Cum (hahaha) could be his son. Interesting resemblance.

  • LCTerrill

I’ll admit, I really didn’t understand the Cumberbatch love until I watched Sherlock for the first time this year, and he still wasn’t really my cup of tea.

    These pics have swayed me.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Holy crap! I appear to have lost all power of rational thought…

  • JauntyJohn

For the record, I’m a fan.
And I love these pics… but at the same time, if the Big Closeups involve deep shadow over a third of your face I might want to have a little talk to the Style people.

  • kimmeister

The first B&W one is really striking me. It’s giving me a Morrissey vibe though.

    • ConnieBV

I’m more a fan of the second one. He has the kind of face that really changes given the angle, and I find that that three-quarter taken from above type-shot really does it for me.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I have a feeling that many of the DKs would not mind being destroyed by B. Cum in Sherlock cosplay.

  • Trickytrisha

That is one classy and well defined philtrum. These are amazing pictures, making Mr. C. look dreamy and pristine. He’s not classically handsome, but there’s something about him that reeks of masculine superiority, don’tcha think?

  • Cee Layton

The lighting really minimizes the prairie lands that reside between his eyes.

  • Jessica Freeman

And I completely lost track of time…right…back to the conference call.

  • alyce1213

I adore beautiful, naturally-lit B&W. Actually the color shot is pretty great too.
It would be fun to see him play dumb, against type.
He’s right about how he’s cast and for that reason, and because he does period so well, I’d love to see him play Christopher Isherwood in something.

  • majorbedhead

I’ll be in my bunk, etc.

*Must remember to get my mother’s copy of the NYT style mag*

  • Rhonda Shore

I’m having a hard time getting that image of him photobombing U2 out of my mind as the preeminent B Cum image…even though these are lovely moody snapshots.

  • theweddingdresser

Oh, thank you T+L for rescuing my monday !

  • MW

I had trouble believing these are new pictures. He looks very Babybatchy.

  • Danielle

  • Betsy

And after the sadness that was the “no longer hot” Johnny Depp pictures from earlier today, you’ve given me much happiness in these Batch photos. What a lovely man. I think it was Mark Gatiss who said he’s “two degrees to the left of typically handsome” and that’s what makes me swoon. Well, that and his voice. And his cheekbones. And his accent.

    • littlemac8

      You forgot his hair!

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

    he so pretty. me likey.

  • WendyD

I drove all over my town yesterday until I found the last dead tree copy of the NYT so I could have a hard copy of the T Style Magazine to sit beautifully on my coffee table. Benedict is my EVERYTHING.

  • Anathema_Device

He’s too intelligent looking to play dumb. He is a very good actor, but I still think that would be hard to pull off.

    And B Cum…I’m giggling like a 12 year old.

  • Julie Chase

    “physically ambivalent bad lovers.”

This made me laugh SO HARD.

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Christopher Tietjens was so dumb, it almost turned me off to Mr. Cumberbatch.

    • Manna

Christopher Tietjens was a genius and one of his best roles to date. Love, love, loved Parade’s End.

      • not_Bridget

When I first heard of the project, I thought Parade’s End might be worth reading. Indeed–Ford Madox Ford’s tetralogy is fascinating & I’ve read it a few times. When the series finally aired, I quite enjoyed it–Tom Stoppard’s adaptation was fine & he incorporated historical research. (He would have loved to make it longer but the budget was not unlimited). First rate production values, too…

I found the cast generally wonderful. Benedict, of course. I’ve re-watched it recently to watch Tom Mison–his Poor Potty Perone is so very different from his Ichabod Crane (on Sleepy Hollow)….

  • MilaXX

B Cum? Really uncles, feeling a bit cheeky today are we?

  • tereliz

Totally sympathetic to his typecasting plight, but really, Cumby, slightly wan and searingly smart is kind of your thing. No one wants to see you play an orange moron.

  • mary mary quite contrary

  • Loramir

Mmmm, lovely way to end a Monday.

Probably the closest he’s come to playing a dumb character would be Captain Martin Crieff in Cabin Pressure. It’s voice acting, not physical acting, but it is glorious. Martin’s not exactly dumb, but definitely awkward, easily flustered, and frequently panicked.

Any Cumberbatch fans who haven’t heard of Cabin Pressure, RUN, don’t walk, and check it out. It’s a BBC radio comedy and you can get it on iTunes. Warning: you will laugh till it hurts.

    • Manna

I agree! Cabin Pressure is just wonderful. Funny, sweet and you can listen to time after time and still laugh like a oon.
The whole cast is excellent, not just Benedict.
These photos are simply beautiful but airbrushed just a tad too much.

    • formerlyAnon

Cabin Pressure is brilliant. Also packed full of a number of favorite Brit actors.

    • Mim McDonald

I like Cabin Pressure. In fact, I prefer BC on the radio to anywhere else.

  • Rick Aiello

Nobody is mentioning the one thing I love most about him. His. Hair. MY goodness. I just want to run my fingers through it and muss it up.

    • quiltrx

He is definitely one of my hair favorites! That loosely wavy look….mmm.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I do like it when it has some height, like in these pics. But sometimes, when it’s combed down close to his head, I think he looks…less yummy. But here, yes!

  • Tina Power

Drives me insane how he can have pictures taken that make him look half his age. It’s very annoying.

  • KinoEye

TLo, you read my mind again. This is absolutely the best he’s ever looked, and that is saying something. Such pretty, soft lighting. Can I just spend the rest of my work day staring at him?

  • Kimmu

Wow, for once he doesn’t look like some eldritch monster straight from my worst alien abduction nightmares! And the soundbites are actually pretty funny.

  • girliecue

These snaps are definitely the best I’ve ever seen him look, but my favorite one will always be of him photo bombing U2. He is so charmingly awkward and exuberant in it that you can’t help but fall in love with him at least a little bit.

    • Imasewsure

I wasn’t really in to the Oscars but I have absolutely loved the photo bombs of him and also Jared Leto bombing our girl AH. Goofy, fun and also “kind of now” as my (totally out of touch) mom would have said!!

  • MinasAunt

Of course he looks good since you can’t really see him. I liked the first season of Sherlock; absolutely hated the second and refused to watch any of the third. He’s overexposed and annoying at this point. He already says incredibly out of touch and dumb things in real life so he doesn’t need to play a dumb character.

  • Imasewsure

These are great photos. Love the quotes. It’s nice to know someone who gets his own image and doesn’t fight against it too hard!!

  • ojosazules

Who knew he could be so dreamy?

  • dash1211

He’d fit right in to Downton….

  • Vaniljekjeks

I can never decide if I find him really gorgeous or really weird looking… but in this spread he’s pure gorgeous. Wow.

  • oatmealpie

    That is one deep philtrum.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

And I adore it. *Fans self*. I’m just so glad I get to look at him on a regular basis, then watch his insane talent on screen.

  • jilly_d

Whether he’s your type or not, there’s no denying that magnetism. I love him as Sherlock, but he looks much better without that idiotic hair.

  • Jacob Bowen

I have been gradually transforming into a Cumberbitch…and I can’t help but read these in his voice!

  • Boop

He’ll break your heart in Parade’s End. Gah…even with the blond hair he sports in that role, that magnetism that odd beauty prevails. And that buttery voice.

    • LaSylphide

LOL My ovaries have shrunk to nothing, but they’d explode if they could!

  • Carla_Charlton

I just want to shriek with the thrill of it all!!!

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

      Let it out.

  • Therese Bohn

    Thank You! <3

  • Just Me

Oh Ben…that’s what I call him in my head…as we spend the evening discussing all kinds of nonsensical things just so I can look into his eyes and listen to his voice. These pics fit in perfectly with my headcannon.

  • Janet B

    Beautiful lighting.

  • quiltrx

These are gorgeous shots of him. That second shot is particularly well done. Recently rewatched a Miss Marple he was in…I haven’t really seen any of his recent stuff (except yummy pictures), but he was a treat in that episode!

  • Micheleh

    “B Cum.” Euw.

  • LaSylphide

He gives me hot flashes for all the right reasons…

  • Agent Sculder

He looks so much better with his natural hair color! I really wish he didn’t have to color it so often. Count me as another person who really didn’t know he existed until Sherlock, but since then I’ve watched nearly everything I can get my hands on where he has a significant part. He’s not classically handsome at all, but he’s SO striking, and when you throw in that voice, along with the fact he tends to get cast as smart guys (which TOTALLY does it for me) and I just end up wibbling rather helplessly.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

He doesn’t really do it for me. But looking at these beautiful photographs, I see what all the fuss is about. Perhaps I should reconsider.

  • MartyBellerMask

    Sweet Jesus, TLo.

  • Hai Yen Nguyen

He is like a beautiful alien.

  • Esz

Can we have some more Hiddles? I know he’s off doing Shakespeare on stage but waaaaaaa I need a fix!

  • ashtangajunkie

I make the same comment every single time you post photos of him, but I can’t help it because HE IS SO DELIGHTFUL.

    • Annistella

      Isn’t he just? Sigh.

  • Belle239

Boy oh boy. I do not find him attractive, at all. I really don’t know why, but I just don’t feel it. He is a good actor, though.

  • Akemi

He needs to stop being so freaking popular, so we can get a new series of Sherlock before 2016.

  • JynxTheCat

These really are the best pix I’ve ever seen of him. I can detect the attraction so many seem to see so easily but is mostly lost on me.

  • Sam Smith

After someone compared him to an otter (which is the cutest coolest animal ever) that is all I can see.

  • snarkykitten

Ready to play a dumb character? Sherlock acted like a haflwit all through s 3.

  • SistaT

This is the first time I ever “got it”. He looks great.

  • ventureforth

I’ve never seen him look LESS like a terrifying lizard alien, so good job Style Mag?

  • MRC210

I’ve never found him attractive but at least he has seemed sexy in other photos. This soft, puffy, dreamy look is not appealing at all. He seems to want to think that Sherlock is dangerous but these photos don’t convey danger. He looks as dangerous as the Pillsbury Doughboy.

  • Ladyjames123

What a horrid nickname! Mr. Cumberbatch, in my most humble opinion, deserves nothing less than the fullness of such a magnificent name as his. Why, If I were his wife, I would refer to him only as Mr Cumberbatch, saving Benedict for Sundays; at which time, he would also cease referring to me as Mrs Cumberbatch and call me “his pearl.”

    • Daisy Buchanan

There’s a great image going around from the Oscars – Travolta eyeing BC with the caption, “Oh my god, it’s Beryl Cumsatchel!”

That’s what I taken to calling him :)

  • AnnaW

Did he somehow miss his own performance in August: Osage County?

  • Lilyana_F

Couldn’t agree more – best pictures of him I’ve seen.

  • jangma

    On people’s obsession with Sherlock:
“I always make it clear that people who become obsessed with him or the
idea of him — he’d destroy you. He is an absolute bastard.”

That pretty much sums up why I don’t care for this Holmes adaptation (and I like the Ritchie films, so that’s saying a lot.)

    • Daisy Buchanan

Not a Holmes expert by any means, but I actually have come to prefer Elementary over Sherlock.

      • MRC210

Yes. Love Jonny Lee Miller and I never get tired of seeing Lucy Liu on TLo.

        • Daisy Buchanan

Lucy Liu is wonderful. She doesn’t get nearly the accolades she deserves as Watson. She really sells the character and makes it something special.

  • Alloy Jane

I’m just here to say that I love all you hilarious people. I lol’d a whole lot.

God damn I love that guy. I think he’s swell.

  • Boop

He can Benedict my eggs any time. (Too much?)

  • Pablo

I think there’s a little too much photoshop for my taste, the skin doesn’t have to be that smooth to look good magazines!

  • Pterodactyl111

This is one of the few times I find him really attractive. Good lighting indeed!
