Anne Hathaway in Roksanda Ilincic at the “Rio 2” Premiere

Posted on March 24, 2014

Darlings, spring has arrived and Miss Annie is FEELING IT.

Anne Hathaway attends the “Rio 2” Premiere in Miami Beach, Florida in a Roksanda Ilincic dress paired with Charlotte Olympia shoes and jewelry by Rona Pfeiffer and Eva Fehren.

Roksanda Ilincic Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

Loving the drama here. It’s funny. This is more dramatic than what she wore to the Oscars earlier this month. Guess she didn’t feel the need to make an impact since she was only presenting this year. We’re just happy to see some color. We don’t know if we can handle another spring full of funereal black dresses on the red carpet.

Having said that, let’s nitpick. It pulls too much across the front due to that tricky pleat. Both her lipstick and her shoes are clashing with the dress and the latter may just be the ugliest lady footwear we’ve seen in some time; designed to make a lady’s feet look like they taper down to one, hoof-like toe. Seriously, those shoes are a big NO.

So thank you, Annie. You gave us the perfect look to start off the week, with just the right amount of complimenting and bitchery, giving us all plenty to talk about while we sip our coffee and put off doing any actual work.

Happy Monday! Love the dress, am okay with the lipstick, loathe the shoes, wish she’d done something fun with the hair.

    • CupcakeTrudy

Can’t quite get a handle on the lipstick, as it appears to be different colors in different pictures.
Her hair looks cute, but agree that a bit more drama would have been great with that adorable dress.
The shoes need to be burned immediately.
      Happy Monday to you, too!

    • Bridget Smith

The lipstick is an absolutely gorgeous color with her skin & hair, but I do think it clashes with the orange in the dress.

  • PastryGoddess

What is this Spring you speak of? We’re getting snow in DC this week.

Love the colors on her…too bad the dress is ugly.

    • Glam Dixie

Yes, here in VA too. It snowed on us a bit yesterday going to the MIL’s house.

      • Jecca2244

frigid still in Boston. Apparently the Puritans are repaying us for all our sins with an awful winter…

      • Sarah

Yes what the hell was that about?!? I am not pleased. And more? WTF.

        • Glam Dixie

I know, I’m sick of this weather. My daughter has missed SO much school. It’s ridiculous and doesn’t appear to be over.

    • FrigidDiva

We’re going to have a high of 29 today in ND, but since we’ll have gale force winds it’ll probably only feel like it’s about 1. I am so ready for winter to be OVER.

    • tereliz

it doesn’t even feel like spring yet in New Orleans. It’s been “cold” (40s and 50s) and rainy.

      • Kitten Mittons

But we had a lovely weekend! We even went to Storyland.
I’m trying to take what we can get. Today is making it difficult, but trying nonetheless.

    • MmmmmmmmK

Interesting. I think the dress is lovely and flattering, but the colors are hideous. She looks like a chic school mascot.

  • Glam Dixie

Those shoes are awful. Seriously, I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. Distractingly ugly, clashing color, super unflattering, the dress is just ok. Love the dark purple against her skin.

  • Danielle

The colors are perfect for the venue, but those shoes are wounding my soul.

  • Bodices like this one absolutely must be fitted to the wearer, as there is zero room for mistakes. Though Miss Annie here is quite the slender thing, its not fitted properly, as our dear Uncles have pointed out. Damn I wish these folk would Just Say No, when presented with clothes that fall short in some way. On the other hand, this apparent problem has a quick and dirty solution. A bit of removable basting tape applied to the inside surface of the bodice at the problem place and we are good to go.

    • Call me Bee

Everyone on earth should listen to you, Kiltd!

  • Classic “scroll down fug” on this. I saw the purple and thought, wow, what a great color for Annie…..then the orange came along and I thought, Ah, that’s the “spring is here” that the Uncles were talking about, OK, I’m still with them….then the shoes came along and my eyes got wide, followed by me recoiling from the computer screen. Those are seriously hideous and I’m usually a Charlotte Olympia lover. This may be one of the very rare occasions where a nude shoe would have worked, since the dress is screaming so loudly (and generally effectively).

    • I’ve never really quite gotten the idea of the platform being smaller than the foot, it just looks odd to me. Sure there is the connection to the chopine shoes of centuries ago, but this iteration doesn’t fly for me.

      • BLauD

I have been wondering why oh why this is so… Seems like most shoes lately are suffering from this problem. I just don’t get it.

        • cocohall

If the platform is the same size as the footbed, the foot looks larger. Making the platform smaller is a visual trick so it doesn’t appear if your footwear is by Clydesdale Ltd. But these are dreadful shoes with or without the platform. The vulva toe and the color are about to send me back to bed with an extreme allergic reaction . . . .

          • BLauD

See, I think it does the opposite. It makes it look like the foot is too big for the shoe.
But either way, vulva toe really is a far worse offense.

          • cocohall

I know what you mean. It looks like the shoe is hanging off the platform. I keep thinking my eye is going to adjust to this, but every time I see it, it looks wrong.

          • Constant Reader

Clydesdale Ltd. That made me LOL. I am stealing it for sure!

Also: agreed on all points including illness-causing revulsion.

          • demidaemon

You know, I’m pretty much a no on everything here except her face. So I am definitely with you on feeling ENH on this.

      • I think the rationale is that when you walk, and the toe of the shoe goes toward the floor there’s some pivoting space. Otherwise you’d have to walk by completely lifting up the whole foot and plunking it straight directly on the floor. This doesn’t make walking natural but is does make it a tad more easy.

    • tereliz

Hideous. Seriously, that was the exact reaction I had to the shoes. And I usually love CO accessories, too.

    • Janet B

Those shoes are a needle scratch.
Besides being an ugly look at her toes, the small platform gives an illusion that she’s not touching the ground in the first photo.

  • mrspotts66

    i’m good with the lipstick.
    love the dress.
a shoe like that makes a foot look like a cyclops.

    • kimmeister

LOLing at the idea of a foot cyclops. Is there a word for a one-toed person? Mono-digit?

      • demidaemon

  • IowaKitten

Wow. Those shoes are horrific. Who decided that a Centaur dress shoe was ever needed?

    • SugarSnap108

Sometimes a Centaur just wants to feel pretty.

  • B_C_J

Setting aside the issue of fit in the bodice, this is a real show stopper. I am good with the lipstick but the shoes are an abomination.

  • Kent Roby

The contrast of the colors of this dress immediately make me think of Whoopi’s purple and lime Oscars dress from a hundred years ago (that is not a good thing).
ETA: I’m thinking that Miss Anne is missing an orange wig and an purple witch’s hat to complete the look.

  • CupcakeTrudy

    Horrific shoes! Just incredible…

But, the dress is adorably fun.
Wish it was better fitted, but otherwise I really like it.

  • I’m not a Hathaway Hater, but that first picture is the very definition of smug! Anyway, really like the dress, really dislike the shoes.

  • SugarSnap108

Those shoes. WHY? I love the dress — it just falls short in execution. And I really like the color combo, though it doesn’t exactly read Spring.

  • @Biting Panda

I wish I could describe for you, the noise that sounded in my head when I laid eyes on those shoes. Are they an homage to Georgia O’Keeffe? A play on the tortuous food bindings? Worse yet, a tie in to the folds and reveals of the dress above? It is too soon on a Monday to scramble my brain in such a way.

    • tereliz

Perhaps they’re a way to express her love for designer footwear and pigs-in-a-blanket at the same time?

  • Jessica Freeman

Really love that dress. I am not even sure how that shoe choice was made.

  • SewingSiren

I’s say that’s about a perfect dress for a Rio 2 premiere. Anywhere else, probably no.

  • zenobar

Just Say NO to Cyclops Toe!

    • Lucinda Head

I read this, scrolled back up, and snarfed coffee through my nose.

  • MilaXX

I like the dress and I get that the bright color is perfect for a movie about brightly colored birds but I don’t like this on Annie and the shoes are hideous.

  • Mothra

Those shoes, maybe in another color might work, but i am going to have nightmares about that toenail.

  • Alyssa

I like the dress, it’s very springy and I like those colors together. Those shoes are hiddy. Who wants shoes that gives them the illusion of hooves?

  • marlie

I LOVE her dress. Minor fit issues aside, I think it looks great on her. Her hair and makeup look good too. But the shoes should be set on fire. This would have been the perfect time for a “naked” shoe.

  • CPK1

upscale bridesmaid. The shoes are not helping

  • cocohall

Is it a side cape? A tablecloth? A largish napkin leftover from breakfast? A hairdresser’s smock for a quick touch up on the bangs? If the dress were not color blocked, I might be able to handle the extra yardage at the hip, but those two colors, plus the “hape” (hip + cape = hape) are making my eyes twitch. And this was before I got to the shoes. Which are dreadful. Bridesmaid realness for Miss Piggy, but otherwise a no.

    • Gatto Nero

Miss Piggy would rock those purple hooves.
      But anyone else — no.

    • demidaemon

  • Stella Zawistowski

I’m on board with this look from head to ankle. And then it’s just a whole bunch of NO.

  • KES4K

I was liking the shoes for being a little different (on their own, not matched with that dress, ugh) but now the unitoe cannot be unseen.

  • barbarienne

I hate this dress but she’s wearing it right.

  • formerlyAnon

I’m glad she’s hanging with the short hair, I think it suits her. That said, I’d forgive the shoes for a little more oomph between waist and crown of head. I think she could have gone with some bold op-art earrings (remember those? Mine were all plastic but I bet Ms. Hathaway could do something pricier), and then chosen a shoe color that worked with them if she didn’t/couldn’t find something that complemented the dress colors.

  • Judy_S

Perfectly proportioned analysis. She looks good too.

  • Janet B

    Love the model’s shoe.

  • jw_ny

why do shoes seem to be the usual gripe/misstep of an outfit? Aside from many of the latest collections being complete crap, there are still a lot of great shoes out there! Someone like Annie should easily be able to get the best sent to her. I don’t understand why the professional stylists can’t see what we so easily see….smh.

  • Sophie

I read comments about the dress being purple and orange, but it looks closer to blue to me. Is it ma laptop? But the dress being blue would make the shoe colour even stranger.
I do like the dress, especially the colours. I didn’t even see the lipstick anymore after I discovered the shoes.

    • marlie

      It’s definitely purple to me.

      • demidaemon

I’m seeing blue violet or lilac, personally. Whatever it is, it does not go with that orange.

  • MitchellGilburne

I reward bonus points for dressing for the venue. That’s a Rio 2 dress if I’ve ever seen one! And it’s just cheeky enough without being too attention-seeking to push her deeper into Anne Hathaway backlash territory. IMHO.

  • decormaven

Looks like a semaphore flag to me. Alert- spring is ahead, although all signs point to winter.

  • Fuchaforever

So she’s really keeping the short hair? :/ she’s not a short hair woman…it makes her big mouth and big eyes seem even bigger….

    • Jeanettesca

Agree. I like her much better with long hair.

      • demidaemon

I disagree. i think she ‘s one of the few starlets who has the right face shape and styling for short hair.

  • Fuchaforever

I like the colors of that fugly dress

  • conniemd

I like the model’s dress better, as the front flat folds inward to the front as opposed to Anne’s where it is folded over towards the back. It makes a less awkward looking drape

  • alyce1213

Well, credit for trying something interesting and colorful, even though it’s off.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I like the purple, but not with the orange. Not feeling this at all.

    • demidaemon

Same. BLECH (as I said below).

  • paintedfish

ugh, now i can’t unsee the one toe foot.

  • Sabin

She dressed to match the movie poster.

  • Kitten Mittons

I love the colors of the dress, but I really don’t like this. Fit issues aside, I really dislike the shininess of it. The belt line, the hip line, and all the lines that the drapey-thingy make just chop her into a million pieces. It also just looks heavy, like it’s sloooowly sliding down her torso. That draping piece is just way too big for my tastes, and the whole dress looks too long on her. And then the shoes.
I really like her, and I love her with short hair. But this whole outfit is just a miss for me.

  • Joanna

Love the dress, hate the shoes. I’m fine with the lipstick, as it’s a great shade on her.

  • Jeanettesca

I’ve never understood the high heel/peep toe shoe. One toe squishing through a tiny hole at the front of a shoe is not a good look on anyone.

  • Oh, good. I was afraid that I was going to be the only one who hated those shoes.

  • tallgirl1204

this dress makes me very very happy!

  • Clash D

THAT is the Lady Gaga of Shoes. It has a certain grotesque sophistication about it.

  • Alfred Cox

Pretty and unusual. The perfect Annie H dress. Shoes are gross, but whatever. She’s feeling it, and I am too.

  • brown-eyed girl

Okay, I admit it. I kinda like her shoes, especially when compared with the model’s in the other pic. Going for a 40s vibe given the dress style. Not digging the lipstick or her hair. Would probably have liked the whole shebang in a b/w photo.

  • KT

    Those shoes are HORRIFYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great dress, though. She’s making it sing. But she really almost ruined it with those fucking shoes. Jesus.

  • Call me Bee

Interesting dress. So glad she’s not wearing clunky oxfords like the model, but those purple satin jobs are all sorts of ugly. Way wrong color. I think her lipstick is just the right color. You sure don’t want her to ear the same orange as in the dress, but that red has a lot of orange in it and coordinates nicely.

  • somebody blonde

No kidding about the shoes. But it’s a fun dress.

  • demidaemon

I’m sorry, but this is one of the ugliest color combinations I have seen in a long time. BLECH. Also those shoes must die.

  • Great dress for the movie

  • E. D.

The shoes are awful. This better not become a trend.

  • lillyvonschtupp

It looks like a bad PR group project. Plus I don’t know whose shoes are worse: Anne’s or the model’s.

  • FridaStaire

Are those shoes Charlotte Olympia? She only makes hideous shoes!

  • ScarlettHarlot

Those shoes look sooooo painful. I love her hair though!
