Posted on March 10, 2014

We’re a week post-awards season and the stars officially don’t give a shit.

This looks like a fairly low-key event and her obligations for the night appear to have been nil, so this is as close to a night off as one gets on a red carpet. We’re not gonna bitch at her. Not too much, anyway. The dress is fine. Perfect for Miami in March. Seems a little pool-side to us, but that’s not exactly a sin in Miami. The print looks pretty much exactly like our old composition book covers, which makes it hard to hate.  Really don’t love the sandals, though. They’d look cute with shorts or even with a pair of white jeans in high summer, but they really don’t look all that great peeking out from under that dress. A simpler, sleeker pair of flat black sandals would’ve pulled the look together much more elegantly. The clutch is cute and we appreciate the pops of color, but style-wise, it really doesn’t go with the outfit at all. A simpler clutch in one color and then a bangle or cocktail ring in another color would’ve completed the look to perfection.

That was us not bitching at her, by the way. What? We were nice. We just had suggestions, is all.

1993 called. It wants its shapeless rayon maxi dress back.

    • schadenfreudelicious

I know I had that dress in the early 90’s… She may also have borrowed my Dr Scholl’s exercise sandals by the look of it….

      • Constant Reader

My thoughts exactly. Although I wore mine with a better bra.

      • NormDeplume720

Mine was black with big pink and beige flowers. I wore it all the damned time. But I could never get the the Dr Scholls sandals to stay on my feet.

      • I’m pretty sure I still have that dress.

    • YES. This is very LS Ayers Juniors department 1993. I am seeing visions of Cory from Real World San Francisco.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I’m not feeling the sandals at all, but the dress is cute and I want that purse to myself.

  • A more supportive bra and getting rid of the bobbypin would be quite good ideas, I think.

    • mrspotts66

      thank you.
i thought she was pulling a liza here, myself.

      • A Shiny O’Connor

Bangs in a bobbypin is the comb-over of not washing your hair.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Right on both… especially the bra tho.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

She looks like she threw this on to pop into the bar from the poolside to get fries and a Diet Coke.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

The more I look at this ensemble, I more I want to eat fries and a coke by a Miami hotel pool.

  • MannahattaMamma

how long before that caftan spawns rumors that she’s “in the family way…”

    • cocohall

Ok, I’ll play. Her face looks a little different here as well, and that sometimes happens to women when they are gestating (Kerry Washington). I’m going to be nice about this look and say it was all she could manage given dreadful morning sickness. If she isn’t pregnant, then is isn’t horrible, but, completely LED (Low Effort Dressing).

      • Little_Olive

She looks a bit tired, I’ll give you that. Pregnant or not, I think she’d look much better with 4 extra pounds on.

    • EveEve

I’ll play too: She does look a bit thick around the middle, doesn’t she? 🙂

    • scoobynacks

Breast-in-a-properly-supporting-bra is best. That’s the saying, right?

  • LeSourire

My god that dress (and probable lack of bra) is doing horrible things to her breasts!

  • @Biting Panda

I love this, but she needed more lift in her bosom.

  • MilaXX

Definitely a lack of effort here. The hair looks styled weirdly. The shoe doesn’t work and the bag is a bit off as well.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

If only the bag could have gone out by itself.

  • Wow this dress should be named “The Figure Destroyer”.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

      Yes. So, so dumpy.

  • Lilak

Oh dear … sandals from the House of Scholl, M.D.?

    • 3boysful

Yes. I was thinking they’re what the stylish octogenarian wears to the Atlantic City tables.

      • Twigg

Now that you say that, the whole outfit is very “retiree gambling away their social security check at the slots”.

  • lrober03

Yep, give Anne a simpler clutch and hand that one right over to me

  • I hate exposed bobby pins as much as I hate just about anything. Jeez, all the money and designer help in the world, and nobody can come up with a better way to keep hair out of a celeb’s eyes than a bobby pin? Love the reference to the composition notebooks (and of course now I’m remembering how many hours I spent coloring in all the white spots in different color markers). I like the purse, a lot!

  • SugarSnap108

She definitely has no shits to give here, nor a bra to wear.

  • kt

Her face looks great, nice and relaxed. But I don’t care how whippet thin you are, you need to wear a bra if your other garment is a sarong

    • BLauD

Her lack of bra is bothering me to no end. If you covered up her face, it makes the look “pool-side granny”.

  • jw_ny

Composition notebook..lmao! If it looked like mine, it would have blue ink scribbles and doodles in all of the white parts. 🙂

    Annie looks cute.

  • Rhonda Shore

I want that dress…would be perfect for the humid DC summers…

  • Kitten Mittons

The older I get, the more in favor I am of comfortable clothing, low-key natural makeup, flats, and generally examining the torture devices that I choose to inflict upon myself in the name of beauty. More and more, I try to find ways to let my natural beauty shine through, to treat my body better, and just accept myself as is.

I will never be able to explain, then, why I instantly turn into my mother when I see a woman without a bra in a public place. I literally started muttering to myself at my desk, “I don’t care how much you paid for them, they aren’t that damn perky. *harrumph* Makes the dress look like a damn nightgown *mutter mutter* Who does she think she’s impressing with saggy boobs *grumble mumble* YOU’RE NOT 19, FOR THE LOVE OF UNDERWEAR!!!”

Oh, the contradictions of life…..more coffee may help.

    • MarieLD

Right? I just wanted to write “I just wish she’d get a bra.”

      • Kitten Mittons

Maybe Maidenform can start lending stars underwear in hopes that they’ll start wearing it.

If mine look perkier than yours, then you’re doing it wrong, Anne. We’re the same age, but I’ve nursed a child and gained and lost weight a bunch of times. Mine are front and center today. Yours are creeping toward your elbow-pits.
Underwear! All the cool kids are doing it!
I guess the coffee just made me bitter and jittery. Bittery.

  • marlie

I’m not feeling the dress or the shoes. Keep the clutch, and start over again with the rest of the outfit. And though her hair seems undone to me, her makeup and hair are still casually adorable.

  • Kindergarten teacher. I can say that because I was one. This was a very popular look at my school.

    • scoobynacks

I definitely had flashbacks to elementary school when I saw this dress.

  • Little_Olive

I saw the thumbnail and got a Julie Andrews vibe. The dress confirmed it. It’s not all bad, anyway.

BUT she needs an actual bra.

  • Julie Ree

I just want to fix the stray bangs.

  • Pretty sure I bought that exact dress from Limited/Express in 1993.

  • JLH

The joke has been made, but I was going to say I’m pretty sure I wore this to my sister’s high school graduation in 1997…and I was 7 then.

  • Danielle

Reverse the clutch pattern with the dress pattern and I would be in heaven.

    • kerryev

      That’s a pretty great idea.

  • alyce1213

I love composition books. Everything’s fine, but she desperately needs a bra. The clutch is adorable, the shoes look very Miami.

  • Christina

This looks like something Maggie Gyllenhaal would wear. (That’s not a compliment, no matter how much I want to be friends with Maggie and her husband).

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Maggie would have paired it with a particularly unfortunate shrunken cardigan, too.

  • Kim Albrechtsen

*shrugs* the dress doesn’t really do anything for her and the pattern is so confusing on the eye.

  • peachy

i do NOT understand how this woman can be so young and so small-breasted and, yet, have saggy boobs!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Isn’t that when a ladystar wears a strapless bra-even small girls need some support!

  • Nimith

I don’t know, the way the print changes size as you travel downwards makes the dress look wonky somehow.

  • Mrcarly

has she never heard of a bra? it’s not like this dress is tricky in any sense that wearing a bra would be hard to do. sheesh.

  • susan6

My kneejerk immediate reactions: 1. Is she pregnant? 2. She needs a bra.
I like the pattern on the dress, and the clutch does pull out the small amount of blue in the pattern (its subtle but its there) so I can’t hate the accessories. She needed to add one more, a bra. Possibly a belt.

  • largishbearishAtlish

I MISS POLE DANCE Barbie….er Annie! (that clutch….oh my aching retinas).
kudos to our dear uncles for the Composition Book reference!!

  • kat89

I know I’m in the minority here, but I really don’t like her haircut. I just don’t find it flattering at all and it seems like since she cut it, she doesn’t know how to dress for it either. When her hair was longer she was consistently on everyone’s best-dressed lists and now nothing ever seems to look right on her.

  • Jacob Bowen

I LOVE that print but not on this dress and I LOOOVVEEE that clutch but only in my hands.

  • formerlyAnon

I like this low key look, except for the shoes. You guys called it with those.
