WERQ: Lupita Nyong’o in Givenchy at the 2014 NAACP Image Awards

Posted on February 24, 2014

BOW DOWN:

Lupita Nyong’o attends the 2014 NAACP Image Awards at Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California in a Givenchy dress paired with H. Stern jewelry and Givenchy shoes and clutch.

Givenchy Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

Bow down to this bronze warrior goddess, peasants. We feel like we should make an offering of some sort.

And then when you get up, take a moment and applaud her astonishingly talented style team. This dress is stunning, the makeup is flawless, the hair is fun and chic, the jewelry is perfectly on point and she’s wearing the right shoes. The fact that everything matches doesn’t bother us in the slightest. She’s working on a whole ‘nother level.

Such a fantastic look. We can’t stop staring. You WERQ that head-turning style, diva.

I am SO excited for her Oscar dress.

      • sugarkane105

        Me too. This Sunday!

        • Tanya Wade

I feel like this glorious woman has raised the bar so high, we will be disappointed. Say it ain’t so, Lupita! Give us the Mount Olympus of Oscar frocks!

      • Claudia Fernandes

i think she will give us the iconic image of the oscars redcarpet of this decade

    • Lucía Gavello

I have to admit, the hair is not entirely working for me… it kinda looks like an exobrain. The rest of it works like gangbusters though, I ADORE that cuff.

      • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I just like that you used the term “exobrain.” It kinda does, but I’m okay with it.

        • Lucía Gavello

Mars Attack realness could be a thing if deployed correctly I suppose.

          • lundibleu

I am still slightly disappointed that Elena didn’t take her PR decoy collection to another level with a slinky sci-fi inspired gown, given the theme of the rest of the collection.

      • gabbilevy

It’s the only part I can’t wholeheartedly endorse. But my love for her is so great, I’m inclined to give her leeway.

      • AnneElliot

It just reminds me of Will Ferrell’s hair in Zoolander. I’m sorry, Lupita!!

        • Lucía Gavello

It’s that damn Mugatu! He’s so hot right now!

          • Vicky

“Todd, are you not aware that I get farty and bloated with a foamy latte?!” is my favourite line out of any film EVER. I dream of using it in real life.

    • http://myriameron.blogspot.com/ Heron

Things I hate: midi dresses, hombre eyeshadow, drippy earrings, matchy accessories.

      AND YET. Stunner. Perfect stunner.

      • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I’m not a big fan of eyeshadow on men either.

        • Sarah

You stole the mild witty sarcasm from my typin’ fingers. Hilarious!

        • kimmeister

I’m going to pee my pants!

        • Kristin McNamara

          OMG. You win it all.

        • Jacob Bowen

I guess that stinks for me…

          • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Don’t sweat it, honey, I’m married anyway. Just because I’m not into it doesn’t mean nobody is ;)

            • Jacob Bowen

Hahaha, well obviously 71 people are anti man-shadow, but for a queen with a flair for the dramatic, I will NEVER be able to put it away! Why should women get to have all the fun with makeup, a majority of us are the ones who apply it anyway….

            • tereliz

No, kitten, those 70-odd people just know Spanish. ;) You rock your hombre eyeshadow like the second coming of Ziggy Stardust.

        • Lucía Gavello

Well… your avatar says otherwise ;)

          • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

            Touché! Cut to the quick!

        • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Unless they’re drag queens, of course ;)

        • http://myriameron.blogspot.com/ Heron

          LOL!!!!

          Edited to keep hilarious original.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Stunning, no doubt. But like Naomie Harris – I think that much muscled sternum is distracting with the softness of this rest of the look.

      • CPK1

I like it, it makes her look like a warrior princess.

    • Jessica Freeman

Maybe I’m cranky on a Monday, but honestly I really think it is terrible.

      • Glam Dixie

The only thing I can muster up much support for is how rich the color looks against her skin but pretty much every color except flat black will play well off of her gorgeous skin.

        • Jessica Freeman

I hate the hair the most, followed by the make up and the length of the dress. It’s all bad or blah. No.

          Gosh, I am cranky.

          • Glam Dixie

I’m pretty sure a blind person did the makeup and a 5 year old did the hair.

            • Anna

The hair just seems like something I would see on a little girl. The color scheme for the dress, makeup, and nails is so matchy-matchy that it seems even more juvenile.

          • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

It’s okay, it’s Tuesday and I still hate some things of this look too. Hate the skirt for irrational reasons.

            • Jessica Freeman

I’m sure most are rational for those of us not loving the look.

      • jw_ny

After reading all the raves, I kept scrolling back up to see what is was that I was missing…saying “I don’t get it!” to myself. I’m usually one to love everything Lupita too. I like the dress color, but that’s about it. Really dislike the cut of the neckline, hair, eye makeup, and matchy accessories.

        • Jessica Freeman

And it’s moments like these that I fear her Oscars dress could be up this alley of “I can wear anything an WERQ it”, and then turn up looking like Anne Hathaway in a satin nipple dress.

          • jw_ny

            perish the thought! ;)

        • Sophie

The neckline is different (better, IMHO, as a real “V”) on the model. And I don’t really like the hair. I like the rest, though.

        • DagnyReardon

don’t forget the orange nail polish too!

        • CPK1

but her shoes are so much better than the beige aberrations the poor model is wearing

      • stubbornthoughts

Glad I’m not alone here. I’m not revolted by any means, but this is just too much of everything on her. The eye makeup is gross and the hair bothers me. It’s reminds me of when Miley did those two top knots at the VMAs.

The one thing working here for me is her confident and swagger. The girl has it in spades!

      • kt

        It’s terrible. Full stop. Yuck

      • Anna

Thank God I’m not the only one. Lupita is beautiful, and there’s something about her that just seems “genuine” and real – it’s hard not to have positive feelings toward her. BUT I think this love for Lupita as an individual can cloud what comes across as good fashion.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I’m a dissenter on the hair and makeup — usually the things she dependably gets right. But I actually do like the dress. And I envy her muscly sternum. *looks down at man boobs, takes a shot of tequila*

    • sugarkane105

That hair is beyond fab. I love it.

      • jen_vasm

I can understand some folks not getting it because no one has rocked a unique sculptured shape like it on the RC before, but I think it’s beyond fabulous.

        • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

The sculptural aspect is what I love about it.

    • hughman

Even on a windless day, the flow of her dress is obeying her every command.

    • Aldona Dye

I love how she manages so much variety with such short hair!

      • VioletFem

Yes! Her hairstylist is very creative.

    • butterflysunita

I love Lupita and think her whole existence is a WERQ. But this is far from my favorite look from her. Not a WERQ for me.

    • Miss wks

Oh My Gawd! I LOVE the fledgling afro puffs!

    • sugarkane105

She’s like a delicious pumpkin spice latte.

      • Judih1

Well said Pumpkin Spice Latte. She looks divine from eye shadaow to toe. Not a huge fan of the hair, would have preferred just a regular Afro.

      • Let it out

I am in love with that color on her – Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin would be in awe.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

D-d-d-d-DAYUM. That cuff is divine. Her makeup is enviable. She is divine.

    • Laura Renee

I am swooning over those arms. Oh my God.

      • 3boysful

I know–doesn’t she look like she could lose the dress in a micro-second and kick some serious ass?

        • Laura Renee

For once, I don’t think that dress would prohibit her from kicking ass!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

The matchy nailpolish and shoes were the right move, I think, but I don’t love the hair. It looks a little juvenile to be paired with a dress that grown-up.

    • oat327

Aside from the body-builder chest and Mileyhair, she looks pretty amazing–though I wouldn’t say this my favorite from her.

    • snarkykitten

Meh. Her hair looks like deformed Minnie Mouse ears or a baby alien from Mars Attacks!

    • Glam Dixie

Xena warrior princess dress with Minnie Mouse head. Theses two things should not be in the same sentence nor on the same person.

    • MW

I can’t disagree more, this is the first look of hers that I really hate.

    • fabián h. v.

      My ebony goddess!! Just amazing.

    • Chaiaiai

Waking up this morning, I didn’t know that i need this. BUT DAMN, I NEEDED THIS, MISS LUPITA.

It’s so good, it’s so good. Heaven knows, heaven knows.

    • Skippy Devereaux

I thought that when it came to her hair, she was trying to look like Simon Cowell!! haha.

    • lamamu

She has the most amazing ability to be both fierce and sweet in the same moment. She really is operating on another level. Brava!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

That’s exactly what I was thinking when I was scrolling through the pictures!

    • alyce1213

Much like Naomie Harris in the Valentino dress, this shows waaay too much sternum/ribcage.
Otherwise, it’s a great dress for her, beautiful color. The shoes and bag are fine and I love the gold jewelry.
Interesting length, somewhere between long and tea-length, shows her shoes. Don’t like the hair bumps, it’s a little silly.

    • KayEmWhy

Killer bracelet! Finally the right shoes!!!!!!!!! WERQ!

    • Courtenay P

I’ve already looked at photos of her in this multiple times today, but I’m still gasping. WERQ Lupita WERQ.

    • @Biting Panda

Right here is where I am disowned. I hate it. Head to toe. You’ll be revoking my Bitter Kitten card, I’m sure.

      • Glam Dixie

Join us over here in the corner.

        • SugarSnap108

Is there room in that corner for me?

          • Glam Dixie

It’s a big corner, come on in.

      • Jessica Freeman

Come sit by us, the drinks are delicious in the hate corner.

      • filmcricket

I don’t care for it either.

      • stubbornthoughts

I assume this is exactly why we were dubbed “Bitter Kittens.” For moments just like this. Let us hope our Uncles are guffawing with pride.

      • Sofia Bentivoglio

i like the dress, but i don’t understand why she got a free pass for matching everything in the styling. the matchy eyeshadow is overkill. i just don’t see what everyone is so excited about.

      • Janet B

Can she WERQ it while I hate it?

        • @Biting Panda

Yes. This is a seemingly divisive look. The Bitter Kittens are on opposing sides of the feels.

      • MaggieMae

Pulling up my chair to join you.

      • Coleen

Oh thank God, I worried that I was the only one.

    • Frank_821

      I like this-not love-but like.

I like especially that the hem of the dress hits her a little lower than on the model. It works better

I agree with some fo the others about the cleavage. That’s a slight ding there. Plus the bodice is a little over designed

    • Lilithcat

I’m not a big fan of that dress, but the color is absolutely stunning on her. And the cuff is amazing, which I didn’t realize until I saw the side view.

On the other hand, whoever accessorized the model should lose his job.

      • tereliz

Where do I get a cuff like that for my own? Do I need to seduce some dwarves or something?

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Perhaps take a stroll through the Mines of Moria or Smaug’s lair!

        • Danielle

Another plug for my friend’s business: Check out Rustic Cuff.

      • kimmeister

The model’s bag is hilarious. It’s like they skinned the belly of a Garfield stuffed animal.

    • Sobaika

LOVE THIS… Except for the hair. But it’s not a total misstep and very minor.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

the detailing on that dress is working for me like gangbusters…AND PUMPKIN, someone made a pumpkin colored dress work. imma gonna die.

    • Yolanda13

Someone is being tossed in a volcano as an offering, because this is FABULOUS!! I am going to watch Giuliana Rancid (I mean Rancic) on Sunday in anticipation of seeing her Oscar frock. I am expecting ÜBER WERQ come Sunday.

    • Missy

I love the look (my goodness, that dress is just so, is it not?), but the eyeshadow is going a little Bob Costas on me. Maybe it’s the shade of pink, but the ombre is also making her look a touch wonky-eyed (which she most assuredly is not).

      • kimmeister

BWAHAHAHAHA at the Bob Costas reference (poor guy!).

    • Rand Ortega

JESUS PALOMINO! This is serious. Head to toe, she’s turning conventional standards are their ear. The hair is amazing, afro fabulosity that shows the beauty & versatility of short & kinky. The dress length plays with the midi frumpy idea then kicks its ass. & the makeup…SWOON. Ombre has never looked so chic. Brava, Miss Lupita. Go on & challenge what beauty is & can be with your BAD self!

    • B_C_J

She looks radiant. My only quibble is with the hair. The dress is too sophisticated for a variation of pigtails/Miley “do”.

    • filmcricket

Nope, sorry. I can’t bow down to pink eyeshadow or that much sternum.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Shutting.it.down. I think I’ve just found my fantasy Wonder Woman!

    • carpediva

      Huh.

      • Laylalola

Yeah, I don’t agree that it’s a WERQ, either. But of course, she’s stunning.

    • lundibleu

Unusually she is displaying a little *more* sternum than the model, and I think both are showing a wee bit too much. I’m not keen on the hair, but I can see it’s meant to be fun. That aside, she looks damn good, and she’s wearing the right shoes! *applauds*

    • marlie

I gasped when I saw this look on the interwebs yesterday. Just stunning. And her hairstylist deserves an award just for how creative they are with Lupita’s hair. Head to toe, this look is perfect.

    • Madam Von Sassypants

      BOW DOWN BITCHES

    • MilaXX

I loved this look so much I had to take to the TLounge the minute I saw it. It looked even better when she put her glasses on to read cue cards. She looks so great in her glasses someone should give her an eyewear contract. Minor quibble; when she and Naomie presented together it was battle of the bronze sternums.

    • J.W.

The color of that dress is beautiful. I just can’t get “Mouseketeer” out of my mind because of the hair though. Oh…I guess that dates ME ;)

      • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Made me think of the old Afro Sheen commercial…

    • Danielle

I want to motorboat her hair, is that weird? Whatever. I want to touch it’s glory.

    • judybrowni

      Miss Lupita makes orange elegant!

Who the hell else can do that?

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The Fashion gods smile down on the fair Lupita.

    • YoungSally

I can’t tell is it leather, leathuh or both?

    • Trickytrisha

Everything is glorious, except for the only thing about her that isn’t elegant or gorgeous – that sternum. It’s getting as many mentions as her hair.

    • KinoEye

Otherworldly in orange. Not 100% on board with the hair. But there’s no way on earth she can ever look *bad*, right? Not my favorite look, but I’m grading on a Lupita curve here. Ordinary starlets need not apply.

      • Anna

“The Lupita Curve,” EXACTLY. I love the colour but I’m not crazy about it overall either. But it’s Lupita, I forgive easily when it comes to her.

    • lillyvonschtupp

I needed a minute to figure out whether or not I liked this look. But now that I see it from these angles. …MAJOR WOW!

    • kipper

This is just stunning – I HOPE she is not peaking too early !!!

    • lillyvonschtupp

And her hair is fly! Give it up for my natural haired sistas!

    • Griffinqueen

just a soupcon of Grace Jones….

    • River

There have been a lot of detractors over this look around the internet, but I adore this look. Didn’t love the hipster glasses she was sporting on stage but love everything else.

    • decormaven

That last shot looking over the shoulder is everything. Cannot wait to see what she wears Sunday.

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

I watched this the other night. Gasped audibly when I saw her. This fit so flawlessly that when she moved, the neckline didn’t.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

The whole ensemble – her, the clothes, the makeup — is truly stunning. A tiny bit sad that she seems to be a member of the “I’m so skinny my sternum can frighten small children” club (current president Julie Bowen).

    • Ashleigh

      Is that LEATHER?

    • ChelseaNH

Did Kara Janx start working for Givenchy? ‘Cause I’m having flashbacks to her signature kimono dress.

    • majorbedhead

I give up. I’ve run out of superlatives.

    • ashtangajunkie

I can’t imagine what it must be like to see her in person. I imagine a collective inhale and then total silence. Who could look at this in person and manage to find words?

    • smayer

I must say, I’d be honored if her fierce warrior self kicked my ass.

    • docholly

Just wow! I just don’t see how it could get better. Oscars are 6 days away. All bets on her to win Best Dressed for awards season.

    • SugarSnap108

I … don’t get it. It’s a great color on her (but I have yet to see a color that looks bad on her), and I love the cuff, and her face. But this may be my least favorite Lupita look that I’ve seen.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m never gonna love that neckline, but that woman is perfection.

    • antonialee

I will not be bowing down to the Minnie mouse hair or the makeup. I will bow down rest.

    • lrhoff

Not feeling it. What’s with the hair? I liked the gold lace dress earlier more than this……

    • prisma

Yeah…people at other places I frequent were calling this one a miss for her stylists. I agree that I don’t like the neckline. When it’s squared off like that, it’s too much about the sternum in a way that is kind of gory.

    • http://www.fatladysings.us/ TFLS

      God, she’s beautiful.

    • AnneElliot

I like some of the elements, but not the overall look. I really dislike the color (but I admit I’m completely biased against orange; hate the shoes; hate the makeup; and I think her hair is silly. And forgive me, but I’m really getting tired of the sternum-baring fashions. She has an awesome body, but I’m really tired of the plunging necklines.

And now I’m running in the other direction because I’m afraid of the wrath of the other BKs!

    • jamescarnage

I am so strongly IN FAVOR of the hair. On of the things I am loving about Lupita is her commitment to taking a completely unique approach to hair from just about every single other African-American female celebrity. She is constantly working the short and natural but also constantly finding new AND fresh AND forward thinking ways to reinterpret the look.

Another big plus for her to me is she challenges the idea that in order to be fashion forward and edgy and experimental, you have to be detached and kind of intimidating, like, for instance Tilda Swinton or Chloe Sevigney. Rather than the typical indie-Alt ice queen, Lupita seems warm and approachable and friendly and sweet, without once playing it safe or being bland or predictable.

I hope that more celebs learn from her example in this regard. Its incredibly refreshing.

      • DTLAFamilies

        I wish I could like this 100x.

    • murt

Awesome look – absolutely love it; the only thing is I preferred the neckline of the dress on the model – the more classic v-shape. The more open plunge on Lupita is less flattering.

    • SewingSiren

Loves everything. The hair in particular. I only wish the neckline was less open.

    • nannypoo

I love orange and it’s a perfect color for her. I think she got the shoes right too. I don’t like the hair but I love everything else.

    • pookiesmom

I was really hoping you’d feature this dress. Breathtaking. I can’t even with this girl. Is she human? The model looks like an empty plastic doll compared to her. Dayum.

    • gracedarling

Nah, just can’t do it. The make-up is making the whites of her eyes look dingy, which I’m incredibly sure they aren’t – if she wanted an emphasized eye, a stroke of teal liner would have done the job and balanced out all the orange. Her skin is gorgeous, but this whole get-up makes her look like she smokes a pack a day.

    • gracedarling

    • Jacob Bowen

I feel like I am holding my breath until Sunday! I hope that she knocks us out of the park with another AMAZING hair style!

    • quiltrx

Too much sternum, too much body shimmer. But otherwise pretty great.

    • boweryboy

      I love the afro puffs.

      • SewingSiren

        Now you’re talking.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

      Her hair is adorable.

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Okay. So. Imagine you’ve been ordered to do the casting for a remake of Valley of the Dolls: Do you cast Lupita as Neely or Anne?

    • livesarah

I think a brighter, less bronze-tinged orange would suit her better and the dress would be so-so without her in it. But what a minor quibble. Love the makeup. And HER HAIR. It is so fun, so cute and still yet so chic. I love the way she works her natural hair. I gasped out loud the first time she was featured by TLo in that fun MiuMiu dress, she is honestly the most stunning woman around.

    • Bozhi

No no no. This is the first thing I have seen her wear that is just all wrong. This is not for her. I mean, she is beautiful, it is hard to make her look not good, but this dress does just that.

    • Clash D

Everything BUT the hair. What is that.

    • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the eye makeup or the matchy shoes at all.

    • R.A.

I just discovered that she has Instagram and have reached a whole new level of fangirl as a result. @lupitanyongo – 140 posts of goodness. Enjoy!

    • Cee Layton

She serving Grace Jones at her most fierce.

    • Qitkat

Not my most favorite look of hers, but she still looks blazin’ amazin’.

    • Alyssa

She, as always, looks like a goddess. I will take that cuff, now that she’s done with it. It is delightfully fierce!

    • RescueMe23

Its ok…you guys love her more than I..

    • Therese Bohn

She is Queen Helen’s heir apparent!

    • María José Benites Peralta

I loathe this. Yuck. Everything is awful and I don’t know how this is possible giving that she is usually dresses pretty nicely. But she does not pull this off, at all.

    • RectPropagation

I am all for ladies rocking their natural hair and ladies with muscles. Love that orange on her and that cuff.

I love you guys, but I have to admit that I specifically come here looking for new photos of Lupita these days. I’m gonna be hella sad when awards season ends.

I don’t know about this one. SHOCKING, RIGHT? I don’t know…its a striking look but the bust just looks so strange, to me. And the hair is hella cool. I see girls with hair like this all the time. Its just not coming all together. Its like she wanted to show her ethnicity while still being mainstream, which is an odd combination. Which is why this look is so odd to me.

I like it from the knees up. This is the first time her makeup isn’t really doing it for me, but I like her hair. And I’m totally digging the”winged warrior” cuff.

I love what she does with matching eyeshadows, I really do.

I’m still not a fan of that low neckline being wide as well, but I have to admit this is the closest I’ve gotten to liking it. It’s barely a compliant.

Too bad you didn’t include the photo of her with Mr. WITFU Jordan at this event. The Jordan ‘accessory’ put her whole look into be-YOND WERQ!
