Tina Fey at the Carolina Herrera Show in NY

Posted on February 11, 2014

We thought this was kind of adorably Nerdy Chic:

Tina Fey attends the Carolina Herrera fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2014 at The Theatre at Lincoln Center in New York City.

It’s as if, when given an array of Herrera to choose from, she just said, “Yeah, um… I’ll just take all these because they match.” It’s not the most put-together look in the world, but it does achieve that sort of “Serious Fashion Editor” vibe that populates the portion of the front row without any celebrities in it. And it suits her to a T. If you manage to look like you absolutely belong in the front row while staying true to your own low-key style , you’ve pulled off quite a trick.  On the “Be Me or Do Me” scale, this falls squarely on “Be me.” In fact, it’s the ultimate “Be me” look. She’s front row, she’s fabulous, she’s comfy (except for her feet, probably) and she looks pleased as punch with herself. Plus: she’s Tina Fey. Everyone wants to be her.

She looks like a stern instructor at Fashionista University. I mean that as a good thing.

    • Danielle

I’d let her spank me with her ruler.

    • Trent

If she’s an instructor at FU, can we assume TLo are the co-Deans?

She looks great, but she and Graydon Carter seem to be aggressively ignoring each other…

      • kimmeister

“Instructor at FU” sounds really funny if you say it out loud.

        • Kent Roby

It’s even worse if you teach at or attend the Fashionista University of Calvin Klein!

      • Dear Graydon Carter,
Please do something with your hair.

        • Kent Roby

          I suggest a jeweled turban.

          • Excellent suggestion! It’d go nicely with that suit.

  • Danielle

Love love love love love everything about this!

  • filmcricket

I don’t really like where the skirt appears to be hitting her, but the coat, shoes, and glasses are great.

  • StarburstLady

Is there a third option besides “Be me” or “Do me” that’s “Be my best friend”? Because that’s where I put this look. And Tina Fey.

    • filmcricket

Yes. I so want to take her, and Amy, and Mindy Kaling, and Allison Janney, and Emma Thompson, and Meryl Streep out for a pint. And just sit and listen in awe.

      • SugarSnap108

Our dream girlfriend crews are one in the same.

      • formerlyAnon

My crew as well, though Kaling is there provisionally. I’ve heard some interviews that didn’t impress me, but you know – interviews! Not always trustworthy.

        • filmcricket

I figure you need Kaling when it’s time to talk about shopping and nailpolish, which, let’s face it, can come up as topics after a couple of drinks. Not that I think she’s dumb and/or frivolous (writing for The Office and now being a showrunner means she’s no slouch, plus her book is pretty good). But she is unquestionably the girliest of my list of girls, and sometimes you need someone to drink pink cocktails and talk shoes with. She is not allowed to pick the music for the evening, though.

          • demidaemon

I love how exacting you are about your girl talk sessions.

          • filmcricket

Girl talk is serious business. 🙂

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

That would be SO FUN!!! Your idea put the biggest smile on my face!

        • filmcricket

All the BKs are hereby invited.

      • I’m so glad you have Allison Janney on there. She would be so fun over drinks.

        • SierraDelta

Especially when she sings “The Jackal” for us. . .

  • Scimommy

It’s true, I want to be Tina Fey when I grow up. But if I can’t, I’m willing to settle for that coat.

  • She looks absolutely fabulous. As if anyone needed any more excuses to want to be Tina Fey!

  • Sally Spannagle

It’s a smart look. I can’t tell if it’s just the photos but the blouse seems to be a little too loose on her

  • 8daysaweek

I would consider trading one of my children for that coat she’s wearing. Probably not the baby, but I’m open to negotiations on the sassy four-year-old, who says things like “You’re wearing that shirt today? Oh.”

    • demidaemon

Has your four year old been attending TLo’s Instititute? It seems like it’s possible.

    • Kate4queen

It gets worse -my 11 year old little puritan princess gets hold of my dresses tugs on the bodice and says “too much boob! mum” in a shocked tone if I show a hint of bosom while I protest that they are the only good thing left on my body. Apparently if I wear something, or say something now, or even sing something, it automatically becomes 20% less cool… LOL

      • DB Ruberto

Apparently if I wear something, or say something now, or even sing something, it automatically becomes 20% less cool… LOL
Welcome to my life with a teenager (19)..

  • PlethoraofBooks

I just want access to the clothes she gets to choose from. Oh, that is the epitome of Be Me isn’t it? Drats!

  • schadenfreudelicious

I love her brand of geekychic 🙂

  • imperfectlaura

It kind of looks like she’s auditioning for The Devil Wears Prada’s sequel The Devil Wears Herrera, and I mean that in the best way possible.

  • I love that coat! If she’d worn that and the shoes with maybe pants in that blue I would be more on board with the actual clothing, but it is all very pretty.

  • @Biting Panda

    Ms. Norbury realness.

  • KinoEye

I love this woman. The glasses and coat are especially great.

    • MidArmJewel

      I really want those glasses.

      • dashransome

        me too!

      • Victor Beiramar Diniz

tootsie called, she wants her glasses back… 😉

        • ballerinawithagun

My husband is kicking and screaming that I’m searching for the correct pair of these glasses! (I’ve tried a bunch, getting close…) He still likes my skinny glasses which everyone thought were nerd glasses when they first appeared on the scene. AND, I’ll be able to see so much in these larger glasses.

  • Jacob Bowen

In the first two photos it looks like she has no right arm…the sleeve into pocket was just a little TOO perfect.

    Cannot unsee.

  • deelup

Sometimes I wish I wore glasses so I could have another accessory to choose from. This is one of those times. She looks lovely.

  • acevedob

Love the whole look especially the skirt.

  • Jessica Freeman

I really love the clothes. Make up needed just a touch more umph.

  • PeggyOC

I’d put in an order for the entire look. Including the glasses.

  • megohd

    She looks positively radiant.

  • Sarah

Cute shoes! Coat is eating her hand, but I forgive it.

  • In_Stitches

I usually love Tina’s style, but this isn’t doing it for me. The shirt is too much of a visual thud; a slim black sweater would have been great.

  • Tatiana Luján

I really like how those 2 prints work together.
While I normally hate that hem lenght, it makes all the sense in the world for being seated.

  • Bradio311

    Love it! Love it!!

  • jw_ny

Love the outfit…especially the coat. As much as I can appreciate a good nerdy-chic look, I’m not feeling any love for those glasses with that hairstyle…

  • That. Coat. I worship.

  • mjude

I do like it but the thought of no tights to stay warm. do. not. get.

    • withbreaththatisbated

She was wearing knee-high rain boots outside, so with the long coat, she probably wasn’t feeling the cold.

      • kimmeister

Ah. I was starting to feel chagrined at the lack of hosiery, since I like to think of her as sensible and practical enough to do that.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Love the whole look and seriously covet that coat.

  • Laura Abrahamsen

The way the thread of blue in the coat picks up the skirt pleases me no end. Also the coat lining. I would wear this in a heartbeat.

  • zenobar

    Matthew Broderick’s twin!

I like the pattern mixing. (Though honestly I like just about everything Herrera.)

  • Anna

Everyone wants to be Tina Fey should be its own category. Not crazy about the skirt hem length but a resounding YES to everything else.

  • Gatto Nero

No one does Nerdy Chic like Tina.

  • ritalinsmoothie

    Ruth Bader Ginsburg realness.

  • Alex Palombo

I would very much like to know who made those glasses, they’re fantastic.

  • MasterandServant

I think she looks so cute! And at least someone warm- it is freezing out there, after all!

  • prisma

Anyone know what kind of glasses those are? I’m ready for a new pair and, although they probably cost my monthly salary, I’d be curious to find out who made them.

    • MilaXX

I look at designer frames then order copies from zenni optical or one of the more reasonably priced online retailers (except I’m not a Warbly Parker fan, they all look the same to me)

  • Violentcello

Dita von Teese posted a picture on her Instagram of her photobombing Tina Fey at this show. It’s pretty cute. Two totally different kinds of fabulous.

  • jilly_d

I want this whole outfit, right down to the frames. And I want Tina Fey to come to my birthday party.

  • marlie

Love it! First off, I’ll have her glasses and coat. I’m not 100% in love with the shape of the skirt, but I really like the print. Oh yeah – and I’ll have the shoes, too, thankyouverymuch.

  • Haley Buchanan

Sexy librarian is definitely a good look on Miss Tina. And, yes, I pretty much always want to be her.

  • newleaf1

Want. that. coat. Serious coat porn, there.

  • MilaXX

I love this brand of nerdy chic. I try it. On occasion, but I don’t feel I quite hit the mark. This looks very bit Tina.

  • msdamselfly

Love the hair, makeup and glasses.

  • Bill Curtis

She looks great and sitting next to Graydon Carter’s blue blazer makes it all look even better.

    • filmcricket

Good God, I did not recognize Carter. Wow. Um.

      • bellafigura1

*Gasp* Wow, um is right. Yeow. Gout much?

    • I was wondering if it was him… time to get a new picture for his VF editorial!

  • stubbornthoughts

This is one of those looks that’s best when the wearer is sitting down. Love that last pic, she looks amazing.

  • Danielle

Even more than wanting to be her, I want to be her bestie. Which I guess means I want to be Amy Pohler.

  • OK, I’d like to pitch Tina Fey as Superwoman. This is her Clare Kent outfit, then she can duck into a phonebooth and emerge in spandex and a cape. I’m not interested in canon.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t love those shoes for sure

  • nannypoo

    Great glasses.

  • Diego!

She looks like a guest judge in Project Runway!

  • rage_on_the_page

  • formerlyAnon

Love the coat immensely. And yes, a supreme “Be Me.”

  • Rhonda Shore

she looks like a sexy editor…

  • Kate Andrews

    And Mr. Prisspot, Graydon!

  • Charles

    LUV HUH.

  • aahlife

Practically speaking, how does this work? Obviously she has a driver that drops her off at the door as it is incredibly cold in NYC. Those shoes just would not keep her feet warm nor the coat and she has bare legs. Am wondering about all the other fashionistas who attend, how do they do this? Wondering as I am going to NYC tomorrow. As I am a Californian I just have no experience.

    • Melanie_Bee

There are pictures of her arriving at the event wearing what looked like rain boots, so she must have put these shoes on once she got inside. 🙂

      • kimmeister

Do they have a bootcheck at these places?

        • One of the fuggirls’ pieces the other day said that this year there is a celebrity changing tent, so they can get into the appropriate designer’s clobber (Australian for clothing 😉 ) before heading to the next show. I am sure they can manage a bootcheck!

          • kimmeister

“Clobber”? What fresh madness is this? 😉 My boss’s boss is Australian, but she literally wears the same black pants and black booties every single day, so she doesn’t particularly talk about clobber. She does say “ta” and “now we’re cooking with gas!” quite a bit, though.

          • Both very useful expressions!

          • kimmeister

Now I want to say to her, “I’m going to clobber you now, dummy” just to see what she will say!

          • You can use it for that too. Because most of us grew up on a lot of American TV we can speak American reasonably fluently!

          • kimmeister

Meanwhile, we think all Australians wrangle crocodiles. I kid, I kid! Australian humor doesn’t seem to translate well to US audiences though. When I went to Australia in 2007, it was with my then-roommate Cathy, and everyone who met us proceeded to exclaim “Kath and Kim!” and then tell us about how it was a very Australian show. They tried a US version a few years back, but it lasted about 2 seconds.

          • As soon as I heard that they cast Selma Blair in Kath & Kim I knew that wasn’t going to work. The whole point was that Jane Turner and Gina Riley were well established comedians (and the same age) who’d been kicking around in sketch shows for decades. And the stereotypes they were lampooning were very Australian – I’ve met those people in Oz but not in the UK.

          • alyce1213

Oh, to be a fly on the wall in the celebrity changing tent. Can you imagine?

          • kimmeister

No, because I’m not a perv. KIDDING!!!

  • She looks like a hot Dorothy Michaels.

  • Tracy_Flick

That tight-lipped smile makes it look like she’d rather be home wearing sweats with a snuggie, and eating ice cream right out of the carton. Right there with you, hon.

  • Melanie_Bee

I’m thrilled to finally see Tina at a fashion show, but am disappointed by the outfit – she seems a bit swallowed up by it. And I don’t love the combo of the pulled-back hair plus the glasses. But I can definitely see the fashion-editor-chic aspect of it.

  • Sue Shea

LOVE the coat!!! the blouse and skirt look frumpy to me tho. i very much want to like it because: carolina herrera & tina fey, but i can’t. i would love to see a little lip too. love the hair, glasses, coat, and shoes. she does look like a fashionista!!!

  • Aidan B

I was going to type “geek chic” in the comments before I even opened this. “Nerdy chic” is close enough. I LOVE this.

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

What is in her pocket that she can’t let go of? Her keys? Her wallet?

  • Ann VerWiebe

Lord, she looks so much more rested now that 30 Rock is over! It’s like her brain can stop running long enough that she can do her hair.

    • madge

she was recently on “comedians riding around in cars drinking coffee” or whatever it’s called and talked about her delightfully short work day these days. she seemed pretty pumped to have so much more time in which to live.

  • brown-eyed girl

She’s got a Ruth Bader Ginsberg vibe. I like it.

  • TweeAsFuck

    Jenna Lyons realness.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

All I know is that I want to meet her and have a couple of drinks with her.

  • Love. It!

  • ThaliaMenninger

I WANT TO BE HER. That is all.

  • Joanna

Yes, I, too, want to be her.

  • Chickadeep

I heart that coat more than I expected to. The more I look at it, the more I covet it.

  • melanie0866

Cute. Love the shoes most of all.

  • Qitkat

She has really mastered that closed mouth smile, while being able to look pretty and not snarky. It doesn’t work on everyone.

  • Shawn EH

Love it. Way to go, standup hobnobbing with the editors!

  • Blergh, Liz Lemon. You clean up good.

  • IraKi

I am such a fan of hers that I would think she looked good even if I saw her wearing a shirt of pubes. God I miss 30 rock!

  • LaSylphide

The outfit is cute, but as a wearer of glasses since the age of 7, I’m always glad to see celebs wearing their specs.

  • The Versatile Chef

Wow. When did Graydon Carter get old?

  • judybrowni

Great outfit, hate those particular glasses.

They don’t do justice to our Ms. Fey.

  • quiltrx

Really cute and great for the venue.

  • Fred Vaughn

  • Janet B

    Definitely want to be her.

  • suzq

What’s in that pocket that’s so interesting? Is she blind texting? Fondling worry beads? Rolling a secret joint? Holding on to her wallet for dear life?
