Taylor Swift Takes Her Hair Out Shopping in Los Angeles

Posted on February 14, 2014

Taylor Swift does some shopping in Los Angeles in an H&M polka dot dress accessorized with Ray-Ban glasses and a Dolce&Gabbana bag.

Hmm? Oh, not Tay. She’s not the pathetic one here. We just put that at the top of the post to get the Tay fans all riled up. She’s fine here. We have nothing to complain about. The dress is blandly cute, but the shoes are pretty nice.

No, we say “pathetic” in response to the entertainment press freaking the hell out about her haircut. We must’ve received 40 publicist emails on the topic from every outfit you could imagine, all shrieking at the top of their virtual lungs about Tay’s radical new ‘do. We went rushing to the wires to see what all the fuss was about, assuming she’d shaved it all off, going by the reactions. Imagine our annoyance when we saw she got a standard bob that looks okay on her but could hardly classify as a major style shift. This girl’s never gonna take a risk if you freak out every time she cuts an inch or two off her hair, entertainment journalists. Not that you care, but we hold out hope that some day she’ll really do something surprising with her style.

  • She looks like Michelle Williams circa 2001. Not necessarily a bad thing.

    I like the dress.

    • Tatiana Luján

Very Forever21, but the cute things they sell, not the garish tacky ones.

      • I saw that it was H&M and I’m thinking, I’ll be there this weekend.

  • AC Simons

She looks really cute, and those legs – wowza.

    • Rhonda Shore

I love that dress and yes, great stems!

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

While it was about time she had a haircut, I’m underwhelmed by the new hair and, combined with her uber-twee style, actually ages her in a frumpy way. I thought Britney’s new hair was more shocking, and even then she only changed the color.

    • gayle

Thank you, I thought I was going crazy because it seemed like I was the only person on the planet who does not like this haircut

      • irielle

You’re not alone. I’m afraid it looks like busy mom hair. However, I think she probably needs time to get used to it, and maybe she’ll end up getting it cut again in a way that works better.

    • Glam Dixie

The shorter cut seems to enhance the dishwater color somehow and that is also part of what makes it so aging. She really needs to go blonde or go home, that color does her no favors.

      • jspark

Agreed! She just aged 8 years. It looks like the in-between stage from short to long. Why would you choose that? Unless of course you’re a scaredy cat.

    • Kent Roby

Mark my words: she’ll grow it back out, then write a song about this hairdo that “done her wrong”.

  • another_laura

Awww, the ear buds, the bra strap showing – she really IS just like us, isn’t she?

Since I just finished reading … Be Me or Do Me on the bus ride in, I can only giggle at this attention-whoring.

    • sagecreek

Seriously, the ear buds bug me, just like they did what Douchebag McWhatshisname on today’s earlier post. You can’t spend 15 mins not plugged in? Also GET OFF MY LAWN.

    • demidaemon

Yes, my exact thoughts. especially when TLo mentioned the barrage of publicist e-mails. Taylor is G’en.

  • susan6

Soccer mom / local news anchor woman hair. Zzzzzz. Cute dress, though.

  • hughman

    “I trimmed my hair,
added four years to my age.
    And now that you’re gone,
    I’m so filled with…

Hmm… what rhymes with age? Oh look, fro-yo!”

    • Jessica Freeman

Her whole next album will be dedicated to the time she went bat shit crazy and cut her hair to her shoulders. Cannot. Wait.

      • jay

not gonna lie, i was half-hoping your comment would say, “her whole next album will be dedicated to fro-yo”

  • JauntyJohn

  • MilaXX

She got a mom bob. No biggie.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I said a sorority sister bob, but your description is much closer!

    • Sigh. I just got the “mom bob”. But then again, I guess if the three kids hanging off of me didn’t let people know, the hair now does. 😉

  • tallgirl1204

I’m hoping this is a 20 minute rest stop on her way to much shorter. This length is neither fish nor fowl, and it is way too conservative for show biz. Her long hair had the virtue of being a rock star mane; I don’t see how this will play from the cheap seats.

    • JudyP

When my friend wanted to go from mid-back length to a pixie, her stylist made her get a bob first in case she freaked out about losing the length (why are we so weird about our hair? I used to be guilty of it too). A few weeks later she got her pixie and kept it for years. I hope that’s the case here because that cut is doing her no favors.

  • FrigidDiva

I can’t really say I’m a fan of the haircut. I wish she’d really go crazy and get something like a pixie or dye her hair some crazy color. This is just blah. Then again I’m in a super stabby mood today, one of my coworkers in the cubicle farm has been coughing this terrible wheezy cough ALL DAY and I’m nearly ready to snap and start throwing staplers.

    • Karen Tamarack

Imagine how amazing she’d look with a Miranda Priestly forelock…

  • KateShouldBeWorking

    Meh. She still bugs.

  • jw_ny

Is she clomping around a mall in those shoes? oh, the price of celebrity….but dang if her legs don’t look amazing and a mile long.

As for her hair…I cringe thinking of the amount she paid for THAT! (wonder if when she got home she cried and washed it right away. XD)

  • FrigidDiva

Also, I read the title of this as she was literally taking her hair out, like her extensions, while she was shopping. Kind of like a less dramatic Britney moment.

    • demidaemon

The actual event was kind of like that, as about thirty people in the salon watched her get her hair cut. No joke.

      So sad.

      • FrigidDiva

Seriously? What the hell is wrong with people?

  • mmebam

Her hair either needs to be stick straight or curled all over. Whatever she’s got going on right now takes her straight into soccer mom territory.

And I like the shoes, but I’m not sure if they go with the dress. I’m feeling more of a primary color. Or deep jewel tone.

  • Little_Olive

The haircut is so bland it actually is a step back for an already vanilla girl.
    OK outfit.
I too shop while listening to music, but never in heels. I guess she doesn’t have to walk the mall up and down and then half a parking lot like us mortals (that said, I avoid the mall like the plague, but some things you can’t get elsewhere).

    • She wore very cute little sequinned jazz shoes on stage (yes, I know) which I think would work better with that dress.

  • crash1212

Cute outfit. Looks like she’s still getting used to the new hair. Standard cut, but it takes time to figure out how to work it.

  • ShaoLinKitten

It’s a bad hairstyle that makes her look like a soccer mom from the 80s. But hey. It’s better than Jennifer Lawrence’s hair cut, so there’s that.

    • Farthingale

I think she would look better WITH Jennifer Lawrence’s haircut.

      • ShaoLinKitten

She would! She has the right face for a pixie. JLaw, not so much. But I read an interview where Jennifer said that, after all the dyeing from The Hunger Games, she had to cut her hair because it was so destroyed. That made me feel bad for hating on her hair. ETA: Not bad enough that I’ve stopped doing it though 😉

        • sweetestsith

It amuses me that (almost) every time a celebrety cuts off their hair its “because all the dying has ruined it”. I know plenty of people who dye their hair constantly, and don’t seem to manage completely ruining it to the point of a pixie.

          • ShaoLinKitten

Maybe JLaw was just sick of the dark hair and wanted to get rid of it as fast as possible. She may also be one of those people with porous hair that does get wrecked by repeated dyeing. There are just as many people out there who dye their hair constantly that need to cut their hair but don’t.

          • demidaemon

Agreed. She was also dying hers in pretty rapid succession, as opposed to normal people who probably only do it every three to six months.

          • ShaoLinKitten

Good point. She kept switching from dark to blonde to dark and back. That must play hell with your hair. I think she is secretly hating the whole Hunger Games business.

I love how we went off on a Jennifer Lawrence tangent in a Taylor Swift thread. Shows who’s more interesting anyway.

          • demidaemon

I know. But they are friends, which still boggles my mind.

          • ShaoLinKitten

Taylor Swift and Lorde are friends too. I think Tay is probably a really nice girl. I just don’t find her all that interesting as a person. Also, JLaw seems like she’s easy to be friends with, though that may just me believing her press.

  • Amykl

I have the same dress! Only it was wrinkly rayon from The Limited in 1993.

    • sagecreek

Me, too! Actually, that was one of the years when almost everything I owned was from The Limited.

  • KinoEye

Oh, for chrissakes. This isn’t a Felicity haircut. This isn’t Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby. Or Britney. This is Taylor Swift takes a job as a local news anchor. Buhh.

    • Anna

There’s an Instagram video (taken from her perspective) to document this haircut for the ages.

      • demidaemon

I mentioned that above. I felt for the people involved, as their utter lameness is now archived on the internet for all to see.

        • Anna

I think that was probably my favourite, but also the most puzzling part of the video. Just people from her entourage standing around watching a girl getting her hair cut. Why did they ALL need to be there?

      • decormaven

Yes, this moment must be recorded for all posterity. A monument must be raised to the Shorn Locks of Tay.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I think the dress is cute. I don’t like the shoes nearly as much as you do, TLo. As for the haircut – meh. I mean it looks like they just chopped it around the bottom and that’s it. They could have done some layers around her face, given her some kind of Sally Hershberger deal, something edgy. This is just, “There’s my sorority sister. The one over there, with the sandy blonde bob.”

  • Jacob Bowen

I actually think it’s kind of cute! It may age her a bit depending on the clothing, but I am ALL for cutting off some hair. I am not usually a fan of women whose hair goes WAY down their backs because they usually can’t do anything with it or the ends are not treated so nicely.

  • sagecreek

Cute hair. I’d do mine that way if I had a professional on hand to blow it out every morning.

  • I hate how everything north of “shoulder length” is considered “short.” So how long is long? I blame that verbal trend for cocker-spaniel hair. HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH TO BE LONG? Grawr.
Anyway, I’d been vaguely reading how Taylor Swift had cut her hair soooo short, and was wondering how short, and this answers my question, which is not at all short. Pffft. I was hoping she went with Evan Rachel Wood’s pixie. That haircut is perfectly respectable (albeit shaped a little news anchorish) and BORING. BAH.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

I grow my hair out to donate so it gets legit long eventually. But before that I get bored with it and am always on the lookout for slight changes that preserve length. According to hairstyle websites, “long” is collar bone length. I guess what I have going is “bunker in the woods, Y2K holdout” length.

      • tereliz

        Bunker in the woods, LOL!

Kate, I’ve done the same merry-go-round three times in the past seven years. Getting close to time to bob it again, but I’ll probably wait until the weather warms back up. It feels good to know all that shorn hair isn’t for nothing, and it grows back so quickly!

  • Call me when she goes Louise Brooks.

    • Farthingale

At the very least. I’m longing for the wardrobe change that such a cut demands.

    • Carrps

      Repped for the Lulu reference!

  • Jessica Freeman

And I have a feeling she’ll have some weave sewn in in 3….2….1. And the least ground breaking hair cut. Jen Aniston cut herself into a bob again and I’ve seen that splashed all over as well.

I am a nut for polka dots, so I covet that dress. The shoes may finally be heels, but grandma-esque as usual.

  • holdstillnow

Scrolling through the pictures I didn’t even notice the cut, just that it looked bouncier than usual. And I’m a hair dresser. The first thing I ever notice about people is their hair.

  • mjude

when I saw the “headline” about her hair cut. I rolled my eyes & said “seriously….whatever”

  • Ashleigh

Is she different??? Like she can’t clip on some fake shit…

  • Alyssa

I love the dress…totally the type of dress I want to own. I would pair it with some hot pink shoes though, personally. I think this was a good dress to be bolder with her shoes. Haircut is seriously underwhelming…I was expecting a bigger, bolder change.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Her adorable bodyguard cub is looking right at me.

  • Laylalola

I’m pretty sure she had extensions anyway. She went from curly to super-straight, the booms (which might have been clip-in too), and I could swear we already had a recent round of her chopping her locks off to shoulder length then miraculously having it long again within weeks.

  • Adorbs!

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

Does this make a trend? Beyonce, Kelly (the little chick with Michael Strahan) No more weaves?

  • Caitlin Rain

Wish it was just a bit shorter. I have a feeling she asked for the Karlie and had a panic attack when the scissors approached her jawline.

  • guyfromhoboken

She looks like a 45 year old cool mom picking up her kids at their private school.

  • Farthingale

This just makes me itchy to see her with a shaggy pixie cut with a ton of fringe. And for the wardrobe changes that would be needed to go with the hair.

I bet she said “I want something really different, maybe short.” And the stylist said “Well, let’s take it up to HERE first.”

  • Karen Tamarack

  • nowlo

She has a very round face so I’m not sure if this wishy-washy in-between length is doing her any favors, especially if she’s gonna style it in this blown out weather lady way. She should have either kept it long or cut it really short, like pixie short.

Dress is cute, though I wish she’d relax and have some fun with accessories. She always looks so prim.

  • Farthingale

After reading the comments and over-scrutinizing the photos, now I hate the color too. The pairing of the cut and color remind me of what you get when you visit the local beauty school for their $29.99 special.

  • Eric Stott

She looks – nice. That’s about all I can say.

  • Tatiana Luján

    I love this look.
Her legs are really long. The dress isn’t shor itself, but there’s a(n) (appropriate) lot of leg between the hem and the knee. How tall is she?

    • hmb

  • DagnyReardon

I’ve said this before, but I would go to one of her concerts if I could have that bag.

  • Jennifer

I’m not a fan of the hair. The cut isn’t all that flattering and I just don’t get that color at all. It’s like the definition of dishwater. Doesn’t look good on anyone I think.

  • save_the_hobbit

She looks great, and I’m loving the hair. On tuesday I got my hair bleached and over a foot cut off, it feels like a huge change!

  • Pure mall mom ‘style.’

  • demidaemon

Man, the way they covered this on E! News made it seem like the second coming of Jesus. My thoughts: Lame. And, here, it’s looking particularly unstyled and helmety.

  • guest2visits

Usually nice to see a change in haircuts now and then but can’t say this is all that wonderful or special. Not bad, not exciting though.
Love the dress, but the shoes are boring with it and I don’t care if the bag costs more than a car…it looks like it could have been a nice one of my grandmother’s. She really needs to find bags that have more edge or youth to them. Or classics that look college-y, not so old on her.

  • CMCH

Nothing to do with the clothes or hair, I’m just surprised a musician would settle for standard-issue Apple earphones, rather than go for something higher quality.

  • quiltrx

It KILLS me how MSN in particular makes a major headline out of EVERY haircut that any “celebrity” of even D-list level ever gets. This cut is flattering and a bit more mature, but is it really that big of a deal?
As a side note….this black/white-loving gal will never, ever sign off on *brown* shoes with it!

  • unbornfawn

I’d hardly call it a bob. More like she took a couple of inches off. The color is kinda dowdy.

  • THANK YOU. I’d been thinking the same thing about this non-event of a haircut.

  • sherrietee

speaking from personal experience, I know how weird her head and neck must feel to her about now – not to mention how long it will take her to recalculate the amount of shampoo to pour in her hand. Dress is cute-ish. Don’t really like the shoes myself. Hopefully she’ll figure out how to style her new do.

  • Michelle Wilson

I think she looks cute and completely unremarkable.

  • titaness25

I don’t like the standard bob, because it will only work on straightened hair, and goddamn it, she was my curl-companion. At least when it was longer I could pretend like she was going to wear her curls someday.

  • Laylalola

She’s become somewhat of a fashion plate so I’m surprised she’s wearing a dishwater-colored bra (her straps are showing). She’s such an odd duck.

  • icm

    woof to her bodyguard.

  • DeTrop

She looks adorable. I’m so jealous. No hat, scarf, boots and heavy coat needed. She looks like the best of late Spring.

  • marlie

In her “on the street” looks, Taylor almost always looks like ANY 20-something girl shopping or out running errands. It’s a pretty basic look, but it’s fine.

  • BrianaJC

it’s not even short; it’s mid length!

  • Ann VerWiebe

Say what you will about Miley, when she cut her hair off (is this a ritualistic thing for young gal stars?) it truly was dramatic. And, she’s stuck with it!

  • Danielle

    Of course.

  • CatherineRhodes

This isn’t even a “standard bob.” She just had a couple of inches trimmed off her regular cut. What’s the fuss?
