I have no idea who this woman is, but does she always look as confused/disgusted as this? Dress is MEH.

      • TrixieConQueso

English actress – recently starred in “Blue Jasmine,” where she got to snuggle with my Other Secret Boyfriend – Bobby Cannavale.

        • Lisa_Co

She’s been a star in the UK for awhile. Starred in Happy Go Lucky and Made In Dagenham, great movies you can rent on Netfilx.

          • Meg0GayGuys6

            LOVED Happy Go Lucky!

I think this length of dress is “shit or get off the pot”. If it’s short, be short, if it’s long, be long.

            • AnneElliot

She was awesome in both of those movies. Also fabulous in Fingersmith, an excellent BBC miniseries. So happy to see her nominated for an Oscar!

          • RussellH88

Happy Go Lucky is so goddamn amazing. The fact that she didn’t get an Oscar nomination for it is criminal.

          • Shug

I LOVED her in the BBC version of Persuasion. Love.

        • YoungSally

Ooh — I occasionally get to see Cannavale in my neighborhood — once sat next to him for breakfast at a local dive. He’s a lot thinner than one might think…and, of course, I saw him the week after his full-frontal nekkid on Boardwalk Empire.

          • TrixieConQueso

Wow – lucky you! He is the epitome of Tall, Dark, and Handsome for me.

          • GillianHolroyd

You so lucky. I LOVED him in The Station Agent.

          • amanda lynn

he’s so totally my secret boyfriend.

    • gracedarling

In all objective respects I want to dislike it, but she has that HBC waif-and-stray vibe that makes her look like a street urchin let loose in a Victorian lady’s dressing-room. Therefore, LOVE IT.

      • Anna

Your description is perfect which now makes me want to love it too, but I can’t get past the weird proportions of the skirt – it hurts my brain.

        • demidaemon

Same. It looks like something that walked out of a Jane Austen novel, and not in a good way.

    • ThatVampinLady

See? This is why actresses need to quit clutching their pregnant tummies on the red carpet. Because it automatically makes me wonder about every actress doing any sort of belly-clutch.

Also, love the new drapes, Sally, but a bit of color somewhere would have been nice.

    • cinderellen

      Bridesmaid.

    • sugarkane105

She looks like a little girl playing dress-up in mommy’s closet. A closet with very nice diamonds to choose from.

      • jen_vasm

When I was 10, my mom made me a 18th century Williamsburg costume (McCall’s did have a pattern for that). It was darn-near identical to this dress, save for the Look At My Shoes hem.

        • GillianHolroyd

18th c. is my absolute favorite era for clothing so technically I like this but it’s too costume-y.

    • fitzg

I just realized I have been misreading Sally Hawkins’ name as “Sadie Hawkins” for years. YEARS.

      • Jacob Bowen

“Sadie Hawkins Dance, in my khaki pants, there’s nothin better…oh, oh, oh.” ANYONE?

        • Alyssa

That was my first thought when I read this post…I will now be singing that song all day long.

    • Trickytrisha

That fabric should never be gathered; and no woman should ever wear a dress made of this fabric if it’s been gathered. Actually lets just put the fabric in the upholstery bin where it belongs.

    • MilaXX

It’s very twee, but I like it.

    • wisdomy

      Well. That’s… a dress.

    • Garcia Loca

      Miss Havisham Couture.

    • Myra Amler

That dress is totally wearing her.

    • mjude

I cant help it I like it.

    • Rand Ortega

It’s always sad when a bedspread eats a talented actress.

    • Danielle

I really enjoy that neckline on her.

    • Betsy

All I thought about was Maria taking a scissor to Captain Von Trapp’s drapes.

      • Anna

To borrow one of my favourite lines from Brigitta, “I think your dress is the ugliest one I ever saw!”

    • Carla_Charlton

      That’s a dress that’s wearing the wearer.

    • hughman

“You know, you’re awfully nice. Is it hot in here?”

    • boweryboy

      Nuh-uh.

However, I do hope she gets some recognition for her amazing work in Blue Jasmine.

    • xmixiex

…someone’s cranky that her nap was interrupted.

So she threw on a tablecloth.

      No idea who she is.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Are these awkwardly waisted little-girl cupcake dresses a trend right now? Because I’d like to veto that. It’s painfully difficult for grown ass women to look good in a dress designed to give a waist to a 5 year old child (since small children are generally shaped like sacks of potatoes with limbs and heads).
She looks painfully aware that her dress is giving her not so much a princess shape but rather Queen Victoria’s shape.
Pity because that fabric looks like it could make a pretty dress.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

She looks like a porcelain bell figurine. Pick her up and clang her feet around.

    • http://piblet.tumblr.com/ Anastasia

Her expression says it all. And those disheveled bangs are KILLING me.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I’m going to take it as read that the dress is twee as fuck and whinge about the accessories. Those shoes are dire.

    • Imasewsure

Maybe an early candidate for this year’s Worst Dressed (Who Isn’t named Lena). Awful!!

    • schadenfreudelicious

My mother owned the matching loveseat….

    • Mothra

I used to have flocked wallpaper in my old house. It didn’t look good on the wall either.

    • laura

The dress is fine, but her facial expressions are kind of killing it.

Also, it took me a minute to realize there was a dress in these pictures…I was too distracted by Bradley Cooper in the background.

      • mj60607

        right. check out dat ass…

    • unbornfawn

Not her dress. She needs a belt or a statement necklace or a bouquet – something – the look is unfinished.

      • alyce1213

A bouquet? Bridal or just a nosegay? Novel idea. I chuckle.

    • Malibufire

A bedspread badly in need of tailoring.

    • Jacob Bowen

SWALLOWED WHOLE by Grandma’s awful curtains!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

That fabric looks as if it could be a slipcover or heavy drapes, but not a dress.

    • nowlo

Too much dress for her. She needs more color and snap. Rolling my eyes at the matching mother-of-the-bride shoes.

    • Mrs. C

Put a powdered wig on her and she could be Martha Washington.

    • decormaven

Pretty jewelry, but the dress makes no impact whatsoever. Wrong choice of lip color as well. I liked her turn in “Blue Jasmine,” but this look does nothing to promote her cause.

    • Fred Vaughn

      Clown dress.

    • GillianHolroyd

It’s not really her kind of dress. She looks like a lost waif.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

It looks bulky on her frame, so I”d vote for a differnt silhouette for Sally.

    • anonylind

And she couldn’t fix her hair for this event because?

      • mickiemonkey

        Or a manicure? Oy.

    • SugarSnap108

I understand none of your choices here, Sally Hawkins.

    • LaSylphide

Hair’s a mess and the dress looks like it weighs 200 pounds, plus it looks too big, and I’m not crazy about the shoes. Jewelry is pretty, though.

    • J.W.

This dress looks like it was made from a 1950s bedspread.

    • cocohall

I quite like Sally and these photos seem to be taken at a strange angle, or mid-turn, so the dress looks twisted. Her feet are pointed toward the camera and her torso is turned away. And she looks like she was chatting with someone, hence the odd faces. She’s quite cute in the second photo. I think she needed a more elegant “do” to make this dress work. But I think she looks charming.

    • Snailstsichr

I like the jewelry, maybe she’ll pick the right dress for it next time.

    • Dagney

oh my gosh….this poor girl. this is awful. The hair? what? is that? The makeup? huh?

    • quiltrx

      Looks like a Love-Hewitt that can’t afford a stylist.
Everything is just so SHAPELESS…hair, dress, nails, shoes. And it looks like she’s a little girl trying on her much-bigger sister’s dress that was made from her old bedspread.

    • cap1764

Looks like my old Gunne Sak dresses from the 70′s

    • marlie

I like this dress – including the hem, but the waist hits her at am unfortunate point, making her look thick in the midsection. Maybe the fabric is a little too heavy? I hate the dyed-to-match shoes, but that bracelet is gorgeous.

    • nannypoo

My grandmother made me something like this for a special event when I was in high school. I thought I looked great.

    • kittentoes

I made an appallingly similar dress in the 90s from upholstery fabric to go to the Ren Faire.

    • RussellH88

She gets a lifetime pass from me because of Happy Go Lucky. It helps that I think she looks nice here.

    • Alyssa

I love the fabric, but think it’s a little overwhelming for a dress. I’m picturing it as a skirt and I like it much better.

    • Diego!

She looks like one of Cinderella’s evil sisters… Honey, get in touch with your ‘on screen sister’ Queen Cate for some fashion advice. Best regards.

    • Carolyne

It just looks so monstrous BIG on her!

    • crash1212

Sally Hawkins gets a pass from me for everything because Persuasion was just that good. Having said that, this looks a tad large on her, but I love the idea and the color for her. I like that she went a bit casual with her head in the face of such a dress.

    • lunchcoma

Scarlett O’Hara had a good reason for making a dress out of her mother’s drapes. Unless Sally is chanting, “I’ll never be hungry again,” she has no excuse for that thing.

    • bertkeeter

      Looks home made! :((

      • conniemd

A dress version of the children’s curtain clothing in “The Sound of Music.”

    • Maria Parramore

She always dresses like someone who would have pigeons as pets.

    • Ann VerWiebe

I love any dress that approximates panniers!

    • Mike

She’s such a brilliant actress and I really like her style. It’s full of personality and endearingly conservative.

    • Kelly

Why is she making such odd faces? The dress is far too big and looks as if it’s keeping some poor couch from being decently covered.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

I LOVE Sally Hawkins! Nice to see her here! She’s so funny and odd and fierce.

    • Susannah

Aw, bless. When is the baby due, Fraulein Maria?
