RPDR: Line up, Bitches!

Posted on February 25, 2014

Yes, darlings, it’s the most wonderful time of the year once again. Miss Ru’s Charm School for Fishy Bitches is back in our lives, with another crop of hopeful young and not-so-young ladies.

Make that half a crop. On the one hand, the idea of splitting the introductions up over two episodes makes sense – and not just because they’re stretching out their material to get as much ad time as possible. It also gives the audience time to meet each one of the queens. All reality competitions suffer from the problem of the first several episodes of a season being overwhelming to the viewer and hard to follow without a score card. This gave Ru (and us) time to really assess every queen up and down.

On the other hand, it felt like the least energetic season opener the show’s ever had. It felt like what it was: half an opener. We’d have rather they aired the two hours back to back in an eleganza extavaganza, because the night ended somewhat unceremoniously.

But we’ll say this: these queens are bringing it. Maybe not so much on the serving and style front, but none of them are suffering from a personality deficit.

Also: Mega-Pit Crew. Not to get all PC or anything, but if they’re doubling the size they should’ve added a Bear or Daddy at the very least. This crew, while hot, are a little too same-y.

And speaking of Daddies, Mike Ruiz is back once again to break these queens in.

Hit it, girls:

Adore Delano

Adore’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard. There. We said it. Aside from that, we think there’s a real character there, but we thought the judges were a little too charmed by her schtick.

BenDeLaCreme

Another who one who’s a real character. But we’re not entirely sure we can stand listening to her for more than a second. We’re sure she’s great at Gay Bingo Night, but she doesn’t seem to translate well to TV. Great, polished look, though.

Gia Gunn

This bitch was serving SHADE. She’s entertaining so far, but you know we’re all going to turn on her eventually. Especially when she makes one of the nice ones cry. Among the more polished of the queens so far.

Kelly Mantle

Sorry. Too old school. Her look had nothing going on and her comedy style didn’t feel modern.

April Carrion

Adorable. But another one with a voice that cut glass. “Crap. Crap! CRAAAAAAAAAAP!”

Vivacious

Oh, honey. This one is so entertainingly delusional that we hope she’s in it right up to the finals. It’s not that we don’t think she’s serving it up, but she’s quite a bit more awkward and less fabulous than she thinks.

“BOOTS.”

Laganja Estranja

Cute n’ Bitchy. Exactly what you want in a reality TV drag queen. We think she’ll be around a while.

Serving Aphrodite. Had she worn a different wig, we’d have dubbed her “Afrodite.”

Too sweet to be a judge. A line we said last night on twitter, and which inexplicably pissed off a whole bunch of Glamberts.

The results of the catwalk portion were, to borrow a phrase from April Carrion, “CRAAAAAAAAAAAAP.” Did they gas the contestants or something? Give them only ten minutes to put their looks together? We’re with Ru. We don’t get these queens who can’t sew.

Gia Gunn

Didn’t love the skirt but she’s definitely top tier in this group.

April Carrion

She turned it around in the end, but we thought the judges way over-praised this.

Laganja Estranja

Awkward. And she wound up taking critiques oddly. Maybe she won’t be here as long as we thought.

Kelly Mantle

HORRIBLE.

To steal a line from a supermarket tabloid cover, “WHAT WAS SHE THINKING?” We can’t unsee the bacon.

“Unsee the bacon” should be a catchphrase of some sort. If only it actually meant something.

Adore Delano

It’s not well made, but credit to her for putting together a real look for a real character with a story behind it. Ru just loves that sort of shit. She’s playing the game well right out of the gate.

Vivacious

Girl, we don’t know WHAT is going on in your head.

BenDeLaCreme

But BenDeLaCreme was the clear winner here. She may be annoying in her affect, but you can’t fault the bitch’s FLAWLESS execution.

These two wig disasters wound up giving one sad motherfucker of a lip synch. We’d have sent both of them home except we’d like to meet the rest of the cast before taking such a big chunk out of it.

But if it had to be one, then Kelly was the right one. Vivacious is too much fun to get rid of yet.

“BOOTS!”

    • Linderella

“It’s crap. I got a box full of crap. Crap. Like, literally crap. Why would Laganja think I can relate to this total crap.” Funniest thing I’ve heard in ages.
This is an interesting mix of queens, and they all seem to have elements I love and hate. Gia is full-on shade-throwing bitch–and it’s only the first episode! Have a hunch I’ll be tired of her really fast. I was total Team Laganja until she couldn’t shut up on the runway, loved Ben DeLa Creme’s style, but can’t stand her personality. Not sure who I’m rooting for yet–maybe April, just for saying crap with mouth WIDE OPEN. Shocked at how unpolished Kelly Mantle turned out to be–and that lip synch was Penny Tration-level tired.

      • Linderella

Okay, I wrote my two cents before actually reading your recap, Boys. We agree for the most part. Forgot all about Adore–does that make her literally unmemorable?! Did love her runway backstory, it showed some cleverness and smarts.

        • Eric Stott

She partially redeemed that hot mess with a funny story- good work!

    • RussellH88

I love Ben DeLaCreme, I think she’s hilarious.

I cannot stand Laganja. It feels like she’s an Alyssa Edwards quote machine. She seems so forced and affected and I can’t stand her.

      • Glam Dixie

Talk about forced, that whole Gia Mom conversation was so awkward and out of the blue and then the on cue crying from Laganja and everyone insisting girl tell us what’s wrong. So fake, so manufactured. Ruined a perfectly good Untucked.

        • bxbourgie

RUINED! Took me out of the epicness of the premiere of the season completely! I was like ALREADY, we’re going to cry over mommy/daddy issues? Can we at least wait until we meet the other 7 queens? Sheesh!

          • zenobar

Right??!!! I felt totally manipulated. I know damn well I’m being manipulated whenever I watch anything filmed for a mass audience, but I don’t want to be hit over the head like that, especially when I have little to no emotional investment in any of these girls yet.

        • JimMcC

Right?! And lemme tell you, I cried like a baby when the whole Alyssa Edwards father conversation happened, but this is just too soon. We’re not invested yet. Also, was it just me, or did it kind of sound like Laganja’s mother was generally supportive of him but doesn’t think drag is a valid career move? I couldn’t quite work out what the situation was, but compared to “I got left at a bus station when I was three,” or, “He hasn’t spoken to me in ten years,” it felt a little blown out of proportion.

Is it too terrible to judge people’s reactions to their own tragic backstories? Hope not!

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

This is why I was dreading season 6 – girls are too savvy and the show is a little too aware. Untucked uninteresting.

          • Eric Stott

It seems all reality shows get to this point eventually – playing to the camera is almost more important that winning

          • Danielle

A lot of the runway answers from the girls just seemed like they were fishing to become sound bites. Some of them didn’t even make sense as answers for the judges questions.

      • andcoh

I cannot wait for Laganja to leave. Mind, she is Alyssa’s daughter so, ya know, maybe it’s genetics.

        • bxbourgie

Alyssa is far less annoying though. Yes Gawwd! Awwwwright! Okaaayyyy!!!

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

Alyssa’s deep down dorkiness made her kind of lovable.

            • Linderella

Alyssa stole my heart forever and always with two simple words: “Back rolls?!”

            • sojourneryouth

And Alyssa kind of has a deep sweetness and spunk about her. She’s the friend your other friends can’t stand, but you just watch her antics with a sweet smile because she is kind of charming, and just shake your head. “Oh, Alyssa!”

            • bxbourgie

Alyssa was funny without trying to be… endearing without trying to be. Too bad she hasn’t been able to pass that on to her “daughter”. This might have been where real genetics could have come in handy. Laganja was just too much. And it’s sad because she clearly wants to be liked and I WANT to like her.. but my goodness!

            • StillGary

Alyssa Edwards… Coco Montrese! That slapped together rivalry was hot-glued hilarity!

            • Eric Stott

There was something sweetly clueless about Alyssa- as I listened to her I just kept thinking “Oh Honey, please, no”

          • Vanessak69

I love Alyssa in all her glorious weirdness and I feel no shame (not feeling Laganja though. Maybe that will change. Maybe.)

      • MK03

All the attitude of Alyssa with none of the charm.

      • Eric Stott

She’s cuter as a blonde boy with a swept ‘do than in drag.

    • @Biting Panda

Well kids, I popped my Drag Race cherry last night. I’ve always enjoyed the recaps, but I could not resist watching this season. Loved it. So glad I did.

What I’m saying to you, with great joy, is that the head on Vivacious, “Ornacia” already has its own Twitter. That amused me to no end.
As did all the shade being thrown around.

The Glamberts lost their shit for no good reason? Shocking!!

      • Anna

I was beyond delighted to discover Ornacia’s Twitter, “Serving face for the masses.”

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

What?? You go back and watch all the previous seasons, you!

      • zenobar

Oh, Hunty, we’re so glad you’re here!

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Kelly’s cheek when she entered the room was cut but not blended. That was the first thing I learned when I was becoming a famewhore ten years ago. However, she could do an AMAZING Lauren Graham!

      • @Biting Panda

I totally saw the Lauren Graham!!! I felt bad for Kelly. I feel like she’s been doing this a looooong time, she should have been ….. better.

        • StellaZafella

Kelly’s primarily an actor who does drag roles…I didn’t see her showing well without a script and a character to play.

      • Kent Roby

“cut but not blended”: Oh, PLEASE come watch next week with ME!

    • Glam Dixie

Ben DeLaCreme is an early favorite for me, she is funny and crazy talented and seems sweet. April and Adam Lambert flirting was adorable, it made my night, but he is too sweet to give a harsh critique. He’s a nice guy, it’s a curse. Adore is such a brat, I love it. Can’t wait to see more of the 2nd group. I loved Bianca she stole the 10 minute show.

      • StellaZafella

Little Glenny Shea was the kid down the street of my childhood who I got into the most trouble with…he really brought out the brat in me. Adore is his doppleganger 50 years on…the “back story” for her shambles of an outfit was a clever, and winning, save.

        • Montavilla

I loved Danny Noriega on Idol. He was a total brat, but it was endearing. I see the same quality in Adore — although the schtick is a bit different. I’m in no hurry to see her leave, busted as she is.

      • Aerialgreen

Love Ben too, and I’m oddly crushing on him out of Drag, just hope he is not being edited on being shown “on character” all the time (as in extremely talented, but lacking personality), because IMO that’s what WoW has been selling out of him to this date.

      • Montavilla

I think TLo have it *almost* right. Adam Lambert is sweet, and he’s not going to be too harsh on artists getting critiqued in front of judges. Fellow Idol-alumni Melinda Doolittle still gets PTSD flashbacks from her time on the show. I’m sure she’s not the only one.

But what he actually is, is too serious to be an outstanding RPDR judge. He was giving actual critiques, instead of witty bon-mots. I did love the bitch face he threw at Laganja. That’s not a look you often see on him. Not in public, anyway. And the flirting with April was delightful. I love when the judges flirt.

        • Glam Dixie

Ageeed. And the bitch face was epic. He did actually say that he didn’t like Gia, that her personality was not likeable up there but he didn’t say that until she was gone, so still, nice guy.

        • MK03

I dunno, I prefer when the judges give real critiques instead of trying to out-quip each other. That’s a large part of why I am so over Michelle and Santino.

          • Dandesun

I totally agree with this. It doesn’t hurt that I pretty much agreed with everything he said. (Plus, I loved the Adam/April eye-fucking and then started shipping them in as innocent a way as one possibly can… lots of imagining them on red carpets together.) I like it when judges give actual critiques, too. Kristen Johnston last year was one of my absolute favorites.

          • xay

Yes! This is why I miss Billy B. at the judges’ table.

    • sleepycat

Thank you for that one comment about the pit crew. :)

    • Eva_baby

Ben was my favorite of the night. She’s got a quick wit.

Any good thoughts I had about Laganja up until the runway were siphoned out of me during her responses to judging, What the hell was that? A nervous tic? The faces of the judges were hysterical.

Say what you will, but I thought Adore trying to unstick her hot glued-to-the-manneuqin dress was hysterical. I also thought her dress was apropos-ly trashy considering Honey Boo Boo was her inspiration.

Gia came off a little too bitchy right off the bat. But I love that Rue calls her G-G-G-Gia in the Chia tune.

Both Kelly and Vi were sad, sad, sad.

    • Introspective

wanted more from Vivacious in the LSFYL, but she still kinda stole my heart with the club kid, cunty jamaican, new york in the 80s-90s thing she had going. so Im here for her. glad Kelly went packing cause I was not impressed!! for a queen with 17 yrs experience?? girl that look was TIRED.

Gia is awl fish, awl shade, awl the time… dont turn your back on that heifer!!!

Loving Ben- she is totally a finalist in my head already!!

April is also one to watch for me; I swear Puerto Rico is a drag FACTORY!!! represent boricuas!!

and mama Ru as always is perfection. that runway look was SERVING.

so happy this season has begun. so needing this glittery distraction from real life.

      • Anna

Totally agree about Vivacious, I love her look and expected more from her. Glad Kelly sashayed away though, both the look and LSFYL was tired AND weak.

        • Vanessak69

I’m hoping Vivacious was having a bad night. I pinned all my hopes to her, especially when I heard her analysis of Game of Thrones (“I think it was the queen’s daughter and she went to another kingdom and then she had her dragon go and torch that kingdom?”)

          • Anna

HAHA, yes! How could I forget that analysis, thanks for reminding me! She was an early favourite for me too but BenDeLaCreme really won me over.

I hope she sticks around too, she is entertaining!

            • Eric Stott

Entertaining in a slightly delusional way- I’m certain that she’s a load of fun in a club, but after she exits the shade starts flying.

          • bxbourgie

I kind of hated that Ru talked her out of what she has envisioned, it sounded like it was gonna be fierce to me, if she was able to pull it together. What we got instead was quite a disappointment.

          • Dandesun

Game of Thrones dork that I am, I grated just slightly at the recap of the show… but at the same time, there is so much shit going on that you simply cannot give a quick overview.

That being said, as much as I liked the raven on the arm… Vivacious didn’t bring Game of Thrones realness. SO SO SO much potential there… you’ve got Stark furs to play with, Lannister reds and golds, Danearys desert chic, hell… go for White Walker realness (which is kind of what the colors she chose suggested to me) — so, yeah, that was a disappointment.

            • Madam Von Sassypants

Also a GoT dork here, and I thought of SO MANY GoT puns for her catwalk that none of the judges offered.

            • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

The judges’ comments overall were as bland as the runway, which just shows how bland the runway was.

            • MK03

Yeah, but she didn’t have much to work with either.

            • mtraptor

I always love hearing my boyfriend’s parents recapping Game of Thrones. His dad is not only one of those people who think that Khaleesi is Dany’s name, he also usually misremembers it as “Khaleeki”.

    • Lilithcat

Just need to call everyone’s attention to the recent New York Times article about Ru and RPDR: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/23/fashion/RuPaul-Drag-Race-television.html?_r=0

      • Introspective

what?? the Times is covering Drag Race? holy sequins, Batman– i dont know whether to call the coverage positive or negative at this point– cause I love the mainstream approval Ru is bringing to drag and to the gay community, but i also cant help but to feel a bit worried about it… am i overreacting fellow BKs?

        • Kent Roby

          That’s “Holy Sequence”!

          • StellaZafella

Too bad I can’t vote this up more!

          • MK03

            “It’s sequence…’cuz there’s more than one…sequence dress.”

            • Sweetpea176

And here I thought it was “sequinsed”!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

It was worth reading the article just to know there will be a 7th season. More Drag Race! :)

    • Anne Silberman

Sad to see Lauren Graham go. I so love her on Gilmore Girls

    • MK03

I’m already sick of Gia. You’re not witty, dear, you’re just a rude bitch. Ain’t nothing fun about that.

      • StellaZafella

Jujube throws better shade…it makes us laugh…Gia just makes me want to give her the back of my hand…an’ she ain’t THAT pretty!

        • MK03

Jujubee throws clever shade. Gia’s boils down to “I’m pretty and you’re not.” The only thing worse than a bitch is a dumb bitch.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

Yes yes yes! That stupid high-fiving in the former Interior Illusions (what happened to the sponsorship?) lounge with Laganja was so childish.

          • Vanessak69

Reminds me of Vivienne Pinay, a queen I had totally forgotten. I did liker her shout out to Paris is Burning though.

            • infochick

I’m going to have to stand up for Vivienne as she’s been fantastic in the Alyssa’s Secret online series on YouTube. Her imitations of Alyssa Edwards are *amazing*!

            • bxbourgie

              VIVI! VIVI-AH-NA!!!

            • Vanessak69

I didn’t know there was such a thing, but I love Alyssa so bless you–I will check this out.

            • Jacob Bowen

Be prepared to have PLENTY of time on your hands because “Alyssa’s Secret” is that she is HILARIOUS and ADDICTING!

          • demidaemon

Indeed. The sooner she’s gone, the happier I will be. I do wish the talent split had been a little more even, because it seems like the second half is going to be packed.

        • Dandesun

Nobody throws shade like Juju. Gia is good for a quip or two but I found her looking rather boxy and mannish in her Kardashian inspired whatever. I didn’t feel it was flattering at ALL.

          • MK03

I didn’t get Kardashian from it at all. Though to be honest, I didn’t see the representation in most of the outfits. The only ones that I feel nailed it were Ben and April.

            • KateShouldBeWorking

I agree completely. To my mind, there are only two realistic Kardashian options: dumbass jumpsuit or black gown cut down-to-there with babyheads. Plus the Kardishians have a paint-by-number make-up routine. Shoulda been rather easy, you’d think.

            • In_Stitches

Who gets Kardashian and thinks…okay, better cover up my chest, show off my legs and hide my bum with an a-line skirt.

      • Kent Roby

I hoping/praying that my home girl Bianca doesn’t also come across as an insufferable rude bitch, but I can promise that she won’t be Miss Congeniality. She’s been really witty (while throwing shade) while emceeing events (Mardi Gras bals, etc) around town, but this competition (and Santino) are likely to bring out the worst in her!

        • StellaZafella

When Bianca says she’s like the drag Don Rickles I want to like her just for the historical reference….now if she just makes me laugh out loud.

          • Kent Roby

Last year she emceed two gay bals Mardi Gras weekend. For one, she had a script to follow; she was funny, but mainly because she was making fun of how bad the script was (like the badly written banter at any award show among co-presenters). The other night the script was somehow lost, so she had to completely wing it, and she killed it. Fingers crossed for the latter (though, as I mentioned in the other post, she apparently goes OFF on Santino’s judging at some point, so that could be a little scary!)

            • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

Most of the time, Santino deserves to be told off.

            • Kent Roby

Yes, but it’s probably not not the smartest move as a contestant!

            • Aerialgreen

If it’s not a Ru, then she has not much to worry about ~ I’d prefer it to be Ben De La Creme going for Santino, since it clear that Ben is the better designer.

            • Glam Dixie

              Shade!

            • Kent Roby

Ben did a great job with her runway look last night. Bianca will be the designer out of the next crop; she’s worked on lots of Broadway costumes (gowns for Evita, etc).

            • LJCdoc

Not so sure about that – did you see Bianca make a dress from nothing in about 3 1/2 minutes at a premiere party?

            • GM

They didn’t say Ben was the best designer of all the queens. They just said Ben is a better designer than Santino.

            • LJCdoc

Doh! Sorry, totally misread that, sorry. Yes, Ben is definitely a better designer than Santino. Of course, I might be as well.

            • Aerialgreen

Show me the receipts! ;) ~ I saw that video today, there a couple sewing moves at the middle of it that don’t match with the result, but even if he had a safety net to guarantee the grand finale (that bit forces him to deliver no matter what), I don’t doubt of his skills or professionalism, in fact Bianca is one of my favorites too!

            • LJCdoc

True enough – I even wondered if she had one secretly stashed.

      • sojourneryouth

Completely agree. While she’s polished, she is using the oldest schtick in the book: mean girl. I’m tired of her because she’s exhausting in her banality.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

She is the best of the previous two Asian queens. I feel that Ongina, Jujubee and even Manila all had this polite quality to them and showed off their intelligence more. Gia is very in your face but, to quote my favorite line from Faye Dunaway’s “The Starlet” – she did not sparkle.

        • jtabz

Oh, my. Gia sure doesn’t benefit from comparison to those three fabulous queens, does she?

Unrelated, whenever I picture Manila in my head, she’s wearing her Big Bird couture dress. It only makes me love her more.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

That dress with those eyes. There’s a reason that lip sync is legendary.

    • Kent Roby

Why oh why did Vivacious pop a simple unadorned (except for coloring the eyes) white styrofoam wig head on her head? It would have been so much more successful either painted (starting with latex base coat, of course) as a mini-me version of V herself, or totally alien (silver, glitter, etc). She lost me from the moment she walked in, especially knowing that she had all the time in the world to make maximum impact with that “avant garde” look.

      • Anna

I saw it described as “rhinestone acne” on another blog.

        • Kent Roby

that was probably referring to her runway look, where the judges said her wig line started at her eyes?

          • Anna

I believe they were referring to “Ornacia,” but it does apply to the runway look too.

            • Madam Von Sassypants

I fucking love that the show put Ornacia’s name on screen like she was another contestant.

            • andcoh

They use Ornacia’s face in one of Vi’s confessionals too. The little picture at the bottom.

            • Introspective

OMG yes!! I fell the fuck out at that one…

      • alannaofdoom

Also: WHY did she not do a dress rehearsal with the zipper. Come on now. I mean bless her for bringing the best moment of the episode but really.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

That was one hella boring runway. Drag queens should not be doing that! Laganga irritated me a lot with the affectatious loud attitude. Too many of the younger queens blend in to one big bland group personality. Adore did save herself on the runway with her explanation. That was a pretty good story and somewhat entertaining.

I am sorry to see Mila… I mean Kelly Mantle go. I really wanted to keep thinking Mila from Project Runway was competing as a drag queen. Kelly even had a similar attitude and voice to Mila. I was loving it just for that.

I did have one true shocking moment in the show. I was appalled, dismayed and disappointed in Ru. In Ru! I could not believe that he would do such an awful thing… when the camera showed the Pit Crew for the first time in the episode and focused on the new guys first. I thought Ru was a heartless bastard for tossing out the old Pit Crew in one fell swoop, but then the camera showed the veteran (not old!) members so I was relieved. Don’t toy with my emotions like that Miss Ru!

I hope the next set is better. I am already very interested in Darienne Lake, by the clips show in the Untucked compilation.

      • Kent Roby

Mila, yes; that’s why she looked so familiar to me!

    • BEE DAYY

These bitches were the most annoying bratty bunch of attention whores! Like girl why are u soo turn up!? From the look of the 2nd bunch they seem way more polish and less over the top

      • Kent Roby

Bratty attention whores? That describes 98% of those on reality shows (actually, I think the percentage is higher, but I listed it on the conservative side)

    • http://vispreeve.tumblr.com/ Den Milano

I love BenDeLaCreme, but she can be too much sometimes. Take a big breath and talk slower! I don’t like Gia and Laganja but they make good reality tv (read: they’re confrontational and bitchy), so I’m afraid that they are here to stay.

    • Adrianna Grężak

Their legs look better in those dresses/skirts than mine do – werq!

    • laura512

I need a gif of Ru saying “That’s because you want to f**k her” to Adam. Thank God for DVR, because I was able to play that over and over and OVER last night.

      • Aerialgreen

        Lol! ~ yes!

    • MilaXX

Can we talk about that walk Vivacious did? Her narrative compared to what we saw were 2 separate things entirely. I’mma need someone to call her on that.

      • sojourneryouth

Yeah, that was a constipated trucker in heels’ walk if I ever did see one. I love, love, love Ornacia, but was absolutely shocked by how ratchet Vivacious’ runway look was. Ooowee, some werq needs to be done here!!!

      • zenobar

That hipsway, though. I’m amazed she didn’t tip over sideways.

      • boweryboy

I was all, “Did we see the same walk?” when Michelle was all yes hunty you’re a NYC ball drag queen bringing that walk. Wut?

    • MilaXX

Also a sponsor shake up; new makeup company and no Absolut.

      • Missy

I didn’t even notice that Absolut was missing until someone pointed it out.
The makeup sponsorship: I always at least try whatever makeup is sponsoring a season, because if makeup works for a drag queen it’s gonna work for me. It should be a very lucrative sponsorship opportunity.

      • Vanessak69

Does this mean no orange Absolut man this year? I still haven’t forgiven him for his assessment of Jessica Wild.

        • MilaXX

I don’t think so. Even the Interior lounge got a name change.

          • Vanessak69

Yeah I noticed. I can’t even remember the new name (wasn’t it different last year too?) My stupid cable feed garbled during the Alyssa in Las Vegas commercial, so I’ll need to be on the hunt for that.

      • zenobar

Noticed that as well. I wonder if there was a falling out with Absolut and Interior Illusions? Ru seemed very pointed when she told them to go relax in the “UNTUCKED Lounge.”

    • JimMcC

Gia’s REALLY buying her own fishiness. I can NOT wait for that lady to meet Courtney Act in two weeks. DeLa is the only one this week that I can see holding a candle to Courtney , Bianca del Rio, Darienne Lake, or Milk based on the 10 minute preview of next week alone.

      • MK03

My bet is that Courtney is this season’s transitioning queen. The first time I saw her, I thought someone had thrown in a pic of Naomi Watts by mistake.

        • LJCdoc

See, I’d think that more of Gia. Courtney doesn’t seem as feminine out of drag, although she’s clearly gorgeous and really looks like a real girl in drag. But Gia is all girl, in or out of drag, to me.

        • andcoh

I think if Court were going that route she’d already be open about it. She’s just such a big name already.

    • colorjunky

Where and when is this on? Looks faaaaab!

      • MilaXX

Monday nights at 9pm EST. You can watch last night’s ep on the Logo website.

        • colorjunky

          Thanks!

      • bxbourgie

It is fab! And when this season is over, you’ll be GAGGING for more, so you can watch the first five seasons as well.. sometimes on LOGO, sometimes not. On Netflix if you have a subscription and Hola Blocker.

        • Montavilla

Alas, it’s not on Netflix now. It used to be.

          • bxbourgie

They took it off of Netflix UK? Bastards!

            • Jacob Bowen

If you use chrome you can add an extension that changes which country Netflix recognizes you in and you can watch it on the US Netflix.

            • Montavilla

I’m in the US. I don’t know about the UK. Sorry.

        • colorjunky

          Grazie!

    • giddypony

I thought April Carrion was perfection.

      • Aerialgreen

Ditto, but also that he was very anxious, guess that goes along with being creative in a new environment ~ IMO she’ll be a top contender if she gets past that.

      • Dandesun

I loved her entrance look. Her shoes need to be on my feet right now. And I love how she plays with gender a bit. Gia saying her look was giving her butch? Meh. Seeing her Covergurlz video, that’s what April does. Not only that but she cites Bjork as an inspiration for April. I do think she did something pretty great with her Duck Dynasty stuff… but the competition wasn’t that fierce, either. Ben had the best by far then April and then everyone else was a big mess of ‘meh’ leading to ‘ugh.’

        • demidaemon

Yep. Ru could have pretty much pointed at any two of the rest and picked a bottom two. I was kind of hoping Kelly would get another chance, but, alas, it was not to be.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

I forgot to mention: Michelle Visage’s squirrel impression. I finally laughed at her! Hooray! Maybe she’ll keep up that streak. Oh, and all the side-eye she kept giving Adam and Santino for disagreeing with her. She didn’t seem too happy with them.

      • zenobar

So much side-eye. I hope they’re setting us up for an EPIC blowout between Michelle and Santino.

        • bxbourgie

That’s my feeling. She rolled her eyes so hard at Santino I thought they were gonna get stuck there. He’s been quiet on social media about this season AND he wasn’t at the LA or NYC premieres.

          • zenobar

Oooooo. I wonder…now I’m going to be watching for clues every episode.

      • Kent Roby

Of course, don’t we ALL roll our eyes at Santino?

    • MarTeaNi

There’s always a queen with a weird makeup decision. I can’t figure why Gia decided her forehead needed to be a completely different color than the rest of her face.

    • ChristopherM

Gia needs to be punched in the throat. What a horrid obnoxious bitch. Pretty fades, honey, but evil is forever.

      • boweryboy

I got two words for her: PhiPhi O’Hara. We all know how that worked out for her.

        • demidaemon

I’m hoping for an epic elimination far sooner for Gia, though.

    • boweryboy

YAY! I’ve been waiting for this since last week!

I don’t like Gia Gunn. I don’t understand the need for these fishy queens to be so rotten to the others – especially the older queens. In the end it makes them look bad (no queen should ever forget Phi Phi O’Hara). You could learn from your elders gurl, m’kay?

I like Ben De La Creme so far. She’s funny and polished and she looks like Michelle Visage so she can work that to her advantage (until the judges call her out on it).

Adore Delanao is adorably helpless. Gurl needs to step up her game and boost her self esteem a bit because when all the bitches finally get together they’re going to eat her up and spit her out.

I like Vivacious’ confidence, but her execution is lacking; her runway look was hiddy; and was I the only one who hated her walk? If she’s name dropping Leigh Bowery (to whom my screen name is a tribute) then she better start bringing the bowery realness. That alien head thing? Great idea, poor execution.

Kelly Mantle was a hot mess from the start. And that wig was rasty as all get out. I can’t believe she’s been doing drag for 17 years and that’s the best she can do. She deserved to go home.

April and Laganja weren’t memorable at all.

And I agree, six seasons in and there are queens who make it on the show and don’t know how to sew? Plus also, the pit crew additions – although nice to look at, are lacking in diversity. They could have added another black guy or a hunky asian or some buff hairy monkey of a cub or something. Gay men come in all flavors, just sayin’.

      • zenobar

Adore in her little parachute scout look was – well, adorable.

        • boweryboy

Was that Adore? I thought it was April Carrion. I’m hoping April will bring a bit of genderfuck drag to this season, but I’m not holding my breath.

          • zenobar

Oh! You’re absolutely right, and I got those two gorgeous young things mixed up. Corrected, thanks!

          • littlecat

I’m hoping the same thing! Ru seems really opposed though, she kept commenting that pants are only okay if you’re a man and that she hates seeing boy hairdos on drag queens.

        • MK03

It was a cohesive look, which is more than some of those other bitches can say about what they were wearing. Where was all the “it’s so butch” shit coming from?? And even if it was a little butch (which I didn’t think it was), so fucking what? Drag is about more than looking like a Barbie.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

I just saw Pandora Boxx’s Drag Center recap. I love how she mocks Gia.

        • boweryboy

I’ll have to check that out.

        • Vanessak69

I miss John and Jon. Those boys made me wish I was a gay man because…..well, just nevermind why.

      • Kent Roby

I think that the poor execution of Vivacious’ entry outfit (sticking an almost-untouched white styro wig head on her head; WTF?) would have bothered me a bit less if she didn’t claim to be carrying on the legacy of creative geniuses like Bowery and the club kids.

        • boweryboy

I agree. If she’s going to name drop, especially someone like Leigh Bowery, then she better bring it. And I mean bring it.

    • Alex Gabriel

So, DeLa is annoying… but Gia isn’t? :S

      • Chartreusite

I think they’re on a pretty even level at the moment. Ben’s entrance was SO affected it hurts, with the added bonus of tasting like a diet version of Jinkx from last season. Although I do prefer the former over the latter (she certainly is more polished than Jinkx), I do think she’s not benefiting from coming on the season after her friend did (although I do think that might give her a storyline similar to Alaska’s perhaps?). Gia is incredibly shady and obviously speaking from a lot of youthful cockiness, but at the same time it takes some serious guts to grab that role instead of trying to play the drag sweetheart role. It helps that her friendship with Laganja is helping to curb some of the bitchiness.

    • PeaceBang

I have never loved Mike Ruiz as much as I did last night. He was click-n-bitch brilliance. And I’m not sure I will ever fall out of my chair laughing so hard as I did when Vivacious, with total, ultimate, serious self-importance, informed the judges that her appendage is named “Ornacia.” I will never be able to watch Julie Taymor’s “Oedipus Rex” with a straight face again, dammit.

      • hellkell

That’s why I just love me some Vivacious. Girlfriend is cookin’ on another planet. I was dying, all, “She named her head, OF COURSE she did!”

The look on Ru’s face when she met Ornacia was priceless.

    • http://www.ueberdesuper.net/ Ueber de Super

I have a soft spot for Gia. I think she will turn out to be a Jiggly Caliente / Jujubee kind of character with a little bit of Phi Phi (and some Tyra Sanchez) thrown in.

      • MK03

Jiggly, PhiPhi and Tyra…not exactly ringing endorsements. And Jujubee is world above them.

      • LJCdoc

She reminded me of Phi Phi a LOT last night – not a good thing, IMO.

      • http://www.ueberdesuper.net/ Ueber de Super

You all underestimate Gia. She brings philosophy and subtlety into this show. Her “ABSOLUTELY” was just pretending to be monotonous, it was a statement, it says yes, we are all looking like prostitutes, but isn’t that what society and commercialism expects from us? I have no doubt she will use her price money for studying medicine and becoming one of the most brilliant brain surgeons in the US. Go Gia!

    • Patrick Cleary

April Carrion needs to hook up with Adam Lambert on camera so…someone….can watch.

      • bxbourgie

I want her on his arm at a Red Carpet somewhere.

        • Linderella

Or on his body on a red bedspread.

      • Kent Roby

How awesome did Lambert look last night? He looked healthy and happy.

    • JaCory Deon

Out of these gals, I’d pick either Laganja or Gia for the finals (though not for the win). Delacreme’s just a bit too affected for me and I’m not sure, after giving the (deserved) win to Jinx last season that they (meaning Rupaul) will go the camp route again. Kelly with that “shake and bake wig” (thank you Alyssa Edwards) deserved to go (because if you’ve been doing drag that long and ARE ON TV, your look should be more polished than everyone else combined). The additions to the Pit Crew are cute enough I guess but would it kill them to add another brown face to the mix? I like my vanilla like anyone but caramel, chocolate, and cinnamon are nice spices too Ru! ;P

    • Dandesun

Michelle Visage’s boobs get higher with each season. By season eight, I expect them to be on top of her head like a set of fleshy Mickey Mouse ears.

Out of this batch… I don’t actively hate anyone yet so that’s good. But the ones I like best are April, Adore, Ben and Vivacious. I don’t think Vivacious will last long simply because of the club kid aesthetic — it’s fabulous in its own way but I just don’t see it going far because the judges, time and again, have ALWAYS gone to the ‘I don’t see glamour from you’ well no matter what. It’s just a matter of time

April’s gorgeous and has already introduced herself to the genderfuck line with her entrance. I wonder how close she’ll dance up to it. Adore is a brat but, so far, she’s an endearing brat and her whole backstory for her outfit made me laugh. Ben… I remain so impressed with his character voice vs his real voice. It’s a hell of a transformation and while she’s a wacky and very dated sitcom character, I love it.

      For now.

But I am also dying for next week’s other half. I need to see those ladies turning it out. Looking forward particularly to Bianca and Milk. Come on, Bianca’s versatility rant in the opening is to live and die for… and probably what 95% of have thought at one time or another with their critiques.

      • Ramon Figueroa

Your first two sentences killed me! I will be laughing in my sleep picturing la Visage’s boobs on top of her head.

    • Chartreusite

I ended up liking Adore a lot more than I thought I would, and I kinda like that she’s refreshingly honest about her weaknesses in the competition (although I do think she could end up being a little over the top). I’m REALLY disappointed that Laganja appears to be going the Jiggly Caliente story route of being someone who has to encounter a lot of pain or character flaws in the competition, because her dancing skills should take her to the absolute top alone and I think she’s an extremely talented (if not entirely baked) queen. I do think she did this way too soon; it’s probably good for her to get in on Drag Race while it’s still on the air because that can make a queen’s career, but I do think her inexperience is gonna get the best of her.

    • Enferdame

De La is a local gal, so I’m rooting for her, but it helps that I totally love her Megan Mullally/Delta Burke vibe. That said, I’ve LOVED Courtney Act’s work on Youtube with Willam, so I’m excited to see her. She’s a totally sweetie, and I love that Aussie accent. I can’t wait to see what Milk and Darienne bring to the table as well.

April’s gorgeous, I feel like she’s got some wit hiding there right now. Adore is going to be an interesting one to watch. She’s clearly playing the young queen track, but there’s something about her character in drag that I find fascinating, but I can’t tell yet if it is on purpose or not. If it’s on purpose, I’d love it more. If it’s not… well.. not so much. Kind of like how I felt about Willam, actually. The dumb girl act is only awesome if it’s just an act.

    • Charles

I hate Laganja and Gia already. Especially Gia. Perhaps I just have a bias towards fishy queens because they tend to be bitches and very limited in their drag. And gurl, she screamed limited. Laganja just seems exhausting.
And what was with the bitchy side-eye from Michelle and Santino? They were at the very least not being edited as on friendly terms.

      • http://vispreeve.tumblr.com/ Den Milano

        Yes to everything you said.

        • andcoh

I want to join your all’s club.

          • demidaemon

I’m with you guys. He runway answers just seconded my first opinion of her.

    • Jacob Bowen

Thank you TLo, I TOTALLY agree with your assessment of the pit crew! Also, if their Pit Crew sponsor is going to be “Scruff” could we get MORE THAN 25% of a pit crew with some sort of scruff?!? It’s like we added 2 Ken dolls to a gorgeous and unique looking pit crew and made it bland looking.

    • Alfred Cox

Good on Aunt Viv to stay. I thought the lipsync was very boring, but Aunt V served it while Kelly looked out of it. This was a good episode though, and gave all of us an opportunity to enjoy the queens a little more.
Gia needs to go pronto. She’s hella annoying and wasn’t called out for making what everyone expects of a Drag Kardashian Konfection.

      • Imasewsure

Yes I thought her KK was seriously lacking but good enough to beat out our dreary bottoms this week…. hmmmm… dreary bottoms… I like that :)

    • Leo Incredible

Laganja’s way of talking reminds me of 13 year old RPDR fan girls on tumblr. She’s all drag buzz words/phrases that people pick up from watching the show, without any real personality/character/thought behind it. Do not like.

I also really like Gia so far. I get that she can grate on people with her mean girl shtick, but I think the key difference between her and someone like Phi Phi is the funny factor. Gia is funny to me, Phi Phi was just mean spirited. Gia seems to know she’s playing a mean girl role, Phi Phi was just insecure.

With all that said, this first group seemed total B squad. I’m much more excited for the next 7 queens.

      • Linderella

Not sure if I have more respect for Phi Phi being a revolting bitch, or Gia for being such a fame whore she’ll “play” a mean girl just for the attention. Kind of hate them both, actually.

      • Alexander Peterhans

I think Gia has a real problem in that she has a big mouth on her, but isn’t anywhere near as fishy as she thinks she is.

To be succesfully bitchy you kind of have to be flawless yourself, first.

    • spooki

Too distracted by Ru’s dress to focus on any of the contestants. It’s amazing and I need it.

    • lillyvonschtupp

No sista big bones???? There better be one next week!

      • Alexander Peterhans

        There is. Exactly one.

        • demidaemon

And she’s a local gal, for me. So she better do well!

    • Daktari100

When the other queens were poking fun at the head on Vivacious’ head, I was in tears from laughing. I’m still laughing about it two days later. The one about her giving good head was everything.

    • Imasewsure

Yes wow that was seriously the worst lip sinc ever… but YEAH to Ru for bringing the eleganza extavaganza back in to our humdrum little lives!

      • littlecat

I think that honour still goes to Tammie Brown, who just danced without moving her lips

        • Imasewsure

Maybe but at least TB brought some awkward energy to the mix… this face off sent me straight to the mirror to sing Madonna and LSFML – and I think I had one up on both of these gurls (and that’s not good!). Here’s hoping for more eleganza in Week Two!! :)

          • littlecat

You’re right, Tammie was still fun to watch!

            I’m hoping for another lip-sync that brings me to tears with how good it is, the way Latrice Royale did. Unforgettable ;-;

    • janegray

I wanna know how BenDeLaCreme put together a dress like that with a glue gun. She must have some kind of Drag Black Magic or something.

    • largishbearishAtlish

Oh Happy Day!!! Uncles T’lo are back to their TV roots! I LOVE your screen caps (now all we need is you to give them your wonderfully spot on, yet so deliciously bitchy, nick names. (I became a devoted BK over ‘Princess Puffysleeves’) was hoping you might dish on the ‘Under the Gunn’ thing but…thank you for some Auntie Ru (have you ever met him/her?)

    • LambeeBaby

I’m SOOOOO happy that Ru is back and as magnificent as ever! She was a vision of Halla-graphic splendor. I was afraid that there might be a drag queen shortage by season 6, BUT it looks like we’re going to be good to go.

    • J. Preposterice

OK, I have not read through all the comments yet, but someone PLEASE come with me on this. When Ru was talking to Kelly Mantle in the workshop, did Ru or did Ru not try to throw her a lifeline with the Carol Burnett bit? Like. I went RIGHT from that to Burnett’s BRILLIANT Gone With The Wind curtain rod dress, and Kelly should have grabbed hold of that, and that giant flower….and she didn’t. SHE MISSED IT. Am I nuts? I don’t think I’m nuts, OK.

    • Elsewhere1010

Loivng Ben DeLaCreme, and my new family motto is “Hot Glue and Desperation”.

    • littlecat

I’m getting a teensy bit bored with Ru’s signature look, especially with how she was ragging on the genderfuck side of drag. But I guess she knows what she likes and she likes what she knows, and it’s her show.

    • LambeeBaby

April Carrion reminds me a lot of Carmen Carrera and Vivacious out of Drag looks a lot like Andre Braugher.

    • MarissaLG

I’m interested to see what’s going to happen with LaGanja. They’re already setting up a storyline about how the other girls think she’s annoying. I wonder if eventually Ru is going to call her out on just talking in drag quotes & she’ll have an on-stage breakdown about how she’s shy or uncomfortable for some reason and that’s why she does it. She’ll promise to be more genuine and then will get kicked off the next ep.

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/divine_aphasia/ Constant Cat

Oh, I’ve seen Ben Delacreme perform live in Seattle multiple times. Talented burlesque performer. I’m giving my hometown bias upfront, but I really think he has a shot!

    • Salty Margaritas

I’m late to the party, daaaamn! So happy that Drag Race is back. Other than Flipping Out it’s the only other “reality” show worth watching. Ben De La Crème (adorable), LaGanja (fun) and Gia (setting herself up for the mean girl) are the best of this lot. The next seven look more droll than this first batch.

    • Vermona

Is it just me, or does Adore look like Alaska and Lineysha’s Lil Pound Cake form Season 5?
