Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan on the Set of “Life”

Posted on February 20, 2014

And now, cute boys in period clothes, playing in the streets.

Robert Pattinson, playing Life photographer Dennis Stock, and Dane DeHaan, dressed up as James Dean, film scenes for ‘Life’ in Toronto.

We liked the idea of casting Dane DeHaan as James Dean. Too often, when actors are cast to play him, it’s because they’re sexy and square-jawed and pouty-lipped (i.e., James Franco); all of which was true about Dean’s looks. But we always felt that no actor had ever quite captured his fragility, youth and smallness, which were the sides of him you saw in pictures taken before his movie career. Hollywood polished him up and turned him into a leading man, but in the days when he was a struggling New York actor his look was quite a bit darker and slightly seedier. We thought DeHaan might have been able to tap into that, but we are SO not seeing James Dean in these shots, to our disappointment. Maybe he looks better on film.

Pattinson, to our surprise, looks amazing. Period clothes really suit him.

  • Diego!

Robert’s attire is AMAZING! I love Dane’s coat too!

  • Watts

The mid-century habit of washing one’s hair regularly seems to suit Pattinson well too.

    • greyhoundgirl

      Ooh…Props for that comment!

  • Danielle

Robert Pattinson needs to wear that hair every day of his life.

  • RPatz is looking uncommonly attractive here.

    • leahpapa

Agreed; his good features (eyes, cheekbones, jaw, etc.) are finally showcased without the distraction of third-day-of-Burning-Man levels of personal care. But he sort of also looks like he’s applying for a bank loan here – yeah, it’s a costume, but it makes me wonder what third path for “real life” could represent his style while also looking polished.

    • kimmeister

That picture when he’s gesturing is giving me Matt Dillon face.

      • Matt Dillon turned 50 this week. I can’t even think of him right now.

        • housefulofboys

He still looks good, though. Like Winona, he has a picture in his attic somewhere…

        • NYCGlamourpuss

And he’s still as yummy now as he was in 1979 when I first fell for him! (*Teensy little floaty hearts circling my head*)

      • Kent Roby

The picture where he’s holding that oversized Pepsi?

        • kimmeister

      • twigg

I’m getting a Jon Hamm vibe from that picture.

    • demidaemon

I KNOW. I was a little taken aback at how pretty I found him. I feel dirty. Possibly in a good way.

    • musicandmochi

It’s probably because he’s finally bathed and shaved.

  • MilaXX

Except for the Mad Men style tie Pattinson is wearing, I’m barely seeing any period styling here.

    • alyce1213

Maybe they’re not going ‘over the top’ period, where every detail screams ’50s. They seem to have chosen — at least for these clothes, this scene — more classic pieces that look timeless. But RPatz’s blue tweed overcoat is very ’50s. And his shoes.

    • Grumpy Girl

Yes, I was looking at the pics, going “what period?” Then again, I am wearing a coat from the early 60s today, myself, so I am likely to not be very sensitive to what is period…

    • Nancer

I had exactly the same thoughts! If I saw someone walking down the street dressed like this, I would just think, “Nice coat, nice suit.” And that would be it!

      • Eric Stott

If I noticed that it was an old suit I’d just say “Retro- cool” and keep walking…wearing my Ca. 1983 Anderson-Little tweed

  • Sarah

I agree..RPatts looks good and should think about keeping that look up, but while I see that the idea of portraying JD as more youthful and small is a good idea, DeHaan looks like a literal child in grown-up clothes. He’s not reading Dean-y at all in these pics.

    • Sophie

Maybe because he barely looks like himself? I certainly wouldn’t have recognised him in the gesturing picture (though the last one is very him).

      • Sarah

I’m not familiar with him as an actor, actually, but Mr. Dean had a more gritty quality, to my mind, even when he was a young slip of a thing.

        • Sophie

Oh, sorry, I was commenting on what you said about Robert Pattinson. I had never heard of DeHaan before, but I agree that he seems to lack something in his role as James Dean.

  • thesevenendless

I hate to say this because I don’t like Robert Pattinson at all, but he looks good in these photos, REALLY good. He should keep his hair this color and style forever, he finally looks like a classic leading man.

  • vitaminC

I bet his bath runoff looked (and smelled) worse than West Virginia tapwater. He looks seriously FANTASTIC and should always, only, ever do cleancut from now on.

    • Jessica Freeman

He claims that being the face of Dior has changed him. Lets hope it lasts longer than the contract.

      • vitaminC

        Maybe he got free soap?

        • Jessica Freeman

He claims to even be moisturizing, honey.

          • Nikko Viquiera

I literally grabbed my moisturizer as soon as i read this! haha.

  • amanda siegelson

i find it so distracting when they cast someone to play an icon of sex and style (and beauty) and that person wouldn’t turn anyone’s head anywhere…
this seems to be the case here with mr. dehaan, since i wouldn’t notice him enough to fall over him if he were walking the street beside me.
james dean for real, on the other hand… woof.
and rpatz looks fantastic – something i have almost never said before. so yay you, rpatz!

  • jilly_d

R-Patz looks SHOCKINGLY good with a regular guy’s haircut. Bob, that should be your head every day. EVERY. DAY.

    • Danielle

You called him Bob and I fell head over heels in love. Bless you.

  • jcars

Pattinson always looks great in period clothes. He was gorgeous in Water For Elephants too. His tall, lanky form just seems more suited to that look. And he has that chiseled face that doesn’t quite look totally contemporary.

I’ll hold off judging Dane because I do trust him as an actor. With motion/voice, I think it’ll work better.

    • KinoEye

I said almost the same thing before reading this. That face was made for period pieces.

  • Ginger

I definitely wouldn’t have recognized Pattinson had you not identified him. He looks really good in these shots. Dare I say that he looks handsome?

    • Seriously! He’s unrecognizable to me as well. I was trying to figure out if Daniel Radcliffe had filled out or something.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Agree with TLo. DeHaan is barely recognizable as himself and unrecognizable as James Dean.

    • Kristin McNamara

I feel like even “as himself” he’s not really a “himself”…. he looks like he is 100% the love-child of Benicio del Toro and Leonardo DiCaprio. I’m not sure how they did it, but I know they did. That can be the only explanation of his genetic make-up. I will entertain no alternative.

      • ShaoLinKitten

Aaaah, very nice description! And I agree, but I would add “consumptive” in front of “love-child.” The kid always looks like he just got over a week long stomach flu. He is a decent actor (I remember him fondly from In Treatment), but James Dean he ain’t.

  • Megan Kennedy

Wow. Wow wow wow. R Patz looks like a Man.

    • AmeliaEve

He is finally growing into his chin and cheekbones.

  • Sara__B

Dane DeHaan doesn’t have the hair for the part, or maybe he simply needs the right hair products. I just spent a few minutes looking at photos of James Dean, and I couldn’t find a single one with his hair looking like that very NOT period ‘do.

  • Jessica Freeman

I see the correlation with James and Dane, but its pretty minuscule. Often times I have found it reads completely different on screen. Here’s hoping. Both are certainly handsome. Loving Dane’s coat here at Coat Porn Day on TLo.

  • Ruth Preston

…as does, surprisingly, the George Jetson breadknife side part. I don’t think I’ve seen him look better.

    • housefulofboys

      love the description – kudos!

      • Ruth Preston

Why, thank you! I heard some form of it someplace years ago and it really fit here.

[squees realizing someone liked her post enough to reply to it]

    • Lindsay McCarthy

My eyes saw “George Jetson” but my brain pictured George Jefferson and I was like..”What the hell?”. Then it all caught up and made sense. I agree, though!

      • Ruth Preston

        RPatz as George Jefferson. Love.

  • DTLAFamilies

Let’s hope Rob invested in some acting lessons along with his new look. (and I actually like him, but for real, he needs to acquire some skillz if he wants to have a long-term career)

  • rkdgal

As someone who had a borderline unhealthy interest in James Dean growing up, just NO. At least Franco had the cheekbones. This kid looks nothing like Dean, save squinting (both on my part and his). Bah.

    • Hermione

I agree–he’s just not good-looking enough, which destroys his ability to simulate James Dean-ness. (I had similar unhealthy interest in Dean at one time.)

  • ovarB

Since these are not carefully photography sessions intentionally directed to a lens but simple snapshots off the street, I am not surprised we are not seeing the nuances of the character. Of course with that being said, let’s pray that the moving medium will reflect otherwise. Dean, Brando and Clift were all of that great group of men who emoted with a simple eyebrow raise and nostril flare without it looking like it belonged on a soap opera.

    • Sarah

You make excellent points. I hope you’re right about the moving medium, for all the James Dean fans out there.

  • sienna sienna

Rob is looking so handsome!Love him in period clothing

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Even when I saw his name on the title of the post, I still can’t believe that’s Robert Pattinson. He looks so clean and elegant and handsome that now I have to reconsider all my life.

    • sienna sienna

please see the Dior Homme Commercial featuring Robert Pattinson on You tube .He looks gorgeous

  • Alyssa

Who is the Dane DeHaan…he is cute! Also, RPatz cleans up nicely!

  • irielle

I’m loving those coats! And it’s so nice to see RP looking clean and well groomed! That’s the kid I thought was handsome back in the Harry Potter movie.

  • marlie

RPatz looks the best I’ve seen him in a LONG time. This Dehaan kid looks good, too, but not quite as period-specific as RPatz (and even then, only barely).

  • Eric Stott

    That is SO Pattinson’s look!

  • KinoEye

Pattinson does look very “old world,” so to speak. Something about his face just lends itself to period pieces. He’d look right at home in a movie/show about royal families in the days of yore. The 60s seem to suit him, too. The other guy lacks the essence of James Dean for sure, though he almost gets there in photo 6. It’s not enough to resemble him physically; what made him unique was his presence, that fragility TLo mentioned. That’s why Michelle Williams worked as Marilyn for me — she doesn’t really look like her, but I think she did a passable job channeling the brokenness and vulnerability Marilyn always had.

    • It’s the jaw. He could revive the hard-bitten detective genre.

      • 3boysful

        It’s that he looks showered.

      • KinoEye

And the cheekbones! I read somewhere that most movie villains have high cheekbones, and it seems to be true. I wonder how he’d do with playing evil characters. It might just be his niche — a Patrick Bateman-esque serial killer, maybe?

        • I think that’d work! Luring ladies to their doom.

  • NMMagpie

    Agreed on Pattinson. Amazingly enough.

  • hillmad

Best I have ever seen Pattinson look (except maybe as poor Cedric Diggory)! He is totally living in the wrong era!

  • oatmealpie

    Cedric! *swoon*

  • Gloriana Reginata

I’m going to make a vote of confidence in Dane DeHaan’s ability to bring across James Dean on the screen. I’ve seen him in both ‘Lawless’, where he plays a semi-crippled hillbilly who is the most vulnerable, likeable character in the film; and then ‘Kill Your Darlings’, which had a 180 degree shift to a character who is selfish, amoral and yet rivettingly attractive to the clique he assembles around him. Any actor who can pull off a combo like that has the acting chops to do Dean justice.

And yeah on the Pattinson finally looking decent (normally he makes my stomach turn). Here he wears that coat very well indeed.

  • boweryboy

Yeah. I’m not seeing James Dean either.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Dane looks great, but I’m shocked at how amazing Robert looks! This style really suits him!

  • guest

Dane looks amazing, but Pattinson looks Edward Cullen before to be a vampire

  • guest

    Robert Pattinson is boring again….

  • Jett

LMFAO @ ppl judging DeHaan. Anyone who’s seen him in “Kill Your Darlings”, in which he played a Marilyn Monroe-esque character (yes you read that right!), knows that he’ll be at least amazing as James Dean.

    • JasonsGroot

Yes, I bet that will be surprisingly easy for him.

  • sagecreek

Has anyone ever seen Pattinson smiling? Ever?

    • Imasewsure

I think I saw him laugh a few times… his face didn’t crack… the sidewalk didn’t close in… I think he’s actually pretty funny and easy going in interviews… he just has that brooding thing going on screen (and the RC of course)

      • DTLAFamilies

Pattinson is hilarious, it just doesn’t translate to still photos for some reason.

    • sagecreek

Hey, I got a downvote! The Twilight kids are in the house.

  • lalala

Negl, Dane looks almost perfect as Dean. And I really love this look on Pattinson. btw his jawline is literally perfect.

  • Kerry McCombs

They’re doing a movie about photographer Dennis Stock???? Or is this film about “Life” magazine in general? Either way, I’m intrigued.

    • Kerry McCombs

Looked it up. It’s specifically about Dennis Stock being assigned to photograph new “star” James Dean. I’m still interested, although Dennis Stock is so much more than just his iconic James Dean photos!

  • pugluv

Oh Rob…my guilty pleasure…You look soooooooooo gorgeous!!!!

  • cmb92191

Wow.. that is Pattinson? I didn’t recognize him without that far off stare and icky hair. He looks great.

  • Aroo

I see Emma Stone as James Dean.

  • formerlyAnon

Like the clothes. They seem somehow like small, wee men to my eye in these photos. And I know Pattinson at least is moderately tall. Maybe it’s an illusion from the voluminous clothing.

  • KT

Neither of them do it for me in the least. I’m falling asleep. Also, Pattinson is weirdly looking a little like Thomas from Downton Abbey, no?

  • quiltrx

R Patz looks really good here. He should try the cleaned-up thing more often.
I’m thinking Dehaan is a mistake. With a little doing, he could look like Bowie. But he doesn’t smolder, which is required for Dean. I don’t know Dehaan’s acting chops, so *maybe* he can pull it off. I’ll say it again, it’s a shame Michael Pitt looks nothing like him (and that he’s apparently a complete twat to work with), because he’s one I can see pulling it off.

  • somebody blonde

No kidding about Robert Pattinson. I’ve never seen him look so attractive, and I’m not one who finds him unattractive normally. Maybe he was just born in the wrong era for his looks…

  • sunflower

I don’t think you can really judge from a few still photos, but I can see Dean a bit in the sixth photo down. Also, Dane DeHaan is a pretty great actor, so I’m interested to see what he’s bringing to the performance.

  • Gatto Nero

Yes — I was thinking that DeHaan can’t hold a candle to James Dean, at least in these shots.
    Pattinson looks mighty good, though.

  • kerryev

What? Robert Pattinson is handsome? I honestly had no idea. I’ve only seen in the vampire stuff and/or bad hair–did not get it.
