Rihanna in Vintage Moschino Couture in Santa Monica

Posted on February 18, 2014

Kittens, let’s get away from the gowns for a moment and give the spotlight to a gal who isn’t afraid to get showy in her street style. And of course by “showy” we mean “wearing vintage couture and spewing attitude in every direction.”

Rihanna leaves Giorgio Baldi Italian restaurant in Santa Monica, California in a vintage Moschino couture coat paired with Christian Louboutin pumps.

1980s Moschino Couture Coat

That is fabulous.

Strangely, the one aspect that makes our eyelids twitch is the pink nail polish. If ever there was a time for the blood-red talons, this would have been it. Whatever she’s wearing underneath doesn’t matter, since the coat is doing all the work. Even her shoes are low-key, and Ri’s not a low-key-shoe kind of gal. We wish she’d closed the coat. The too-casual outfit is distracting. But she gets all the T Lo Love in the world for picking that to wear on a night out.

She’s probably one of the best people around right now who can take anything and make it look like “I don’t give a good goddamn” and still look great in the process.

      • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

        Beautifully said, sir!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

The jewellery and lipstick are the only things that are saving this from looking like she got locked out of her hotel room in her dressing gown and undies. A fab dressing gown, but still undies.

      • leahpapa

I was actually surprised she didn’t do the full RiRi by going nekked underneath. Hot damn I love this woman. She cray, but she’s perfectly good at it.

        • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes, this would have been much better of she had been nekked underneath.

    • Emily Giovanni

I thought that was a swim suit underneath. Like the jacket was a too-fab cover up and she was going to a pool party.

      • sojourneryouth

It isn’t a vintage swimsuit? Adore everything about the coat, to the extent that I might needs to take up smoking just so I can pose with a loooong cigarette holder while wearing it. As for the rest, gotta quote the Fug Girls: “Look into pants.”

      • NOLA_gal

It looks like the silk nighty/rompers we sold at Victoria’s Secret when I was in college. They were very popular the week before Valentine’s Day.

    • Glam Dixie

I would have believed you if you had told me this was a really expensive designer robe (or housecoat as my granny called them), but it doesn’t look like actual outerwear. Maybe that’s just me. My coat is Carhartt so wtf do I know.

    • MilaXX

Love that coat! I think the look called for black nails, but the coat is clearly doing all the heavy lifting.

      • Alyssa

I agree, black nails would have been perfect.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I’d have gone dark green. Divine Decadence.

        • Sobaika

I want to hug you for the Cabaret reference. One of my favorites.

      • butterflysunita

That coat is too fabulous. For me it’s a girl on the street WERQ.

    • zenobar

Serving up Andre Leon Talon realness.

      • leahpapa

I really, really want ALT’s Lifetime biopic to be entitled “Oh Caftan, My Caftan: the Andre Leon Talley Story.”

        • zenobar

          YES PLEASE!!!

          • leahpapa

In fairness, I have to get 100% of the credit for that title to my sister :)

        • Jessica Freeman

One of the chapters must be “I’ve been wearing Uggs and No One Noticed, and other things under my Caftcan”

          • Rand Ortega

Another should be, “Jamaican Blue: Or what I was smoking when I convinced JHud to wear that horrid gold bolero”.

        • Rand Ortega

Starring Laurence Fishbourne as Andre Leon Talley, Emma Thompson as Anna Wintour, Frances Conroy as Grace Coddington & Tom Hiddleston as Hamish Bowles.

          • leahpapa

            That casting is INSPIRED.

            • Rand Ortega

              Scenery officially chewed, amirite???!!!

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I’d have gone with Miranda Richardson for Anna Wintour, but otherwise YES! Mind you, I’ll say yes to casting Hiddleston in anything.

            • Rand Ortega

MR does have the bitchy down to a science, doesn’t she? Just saw “Sleepy Hollow” over the weekend & while I was thinking of an actress that could be hardcore in public but gentle in friendship mode as AW & ALT were BFF’s, your choice is better.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Plus I am sure I have seen her in a severe bob – it definitely works!

            • Lower L

She had a bob in The Crying Game.

            • NYCGlamourpuss

You know what’s funny, in sort of a “Six Degrees of Separation” kind of way? We all know that Miranda Priestly is based on Anna Wintour. Well, after the book, but before the film of “The Devil Wears Prada”, I always had cast Miranda Richardson as Miranda Priestly in my mind. This was a couple of years before the movie – now I can’t picture anyone else but Meryl as Miranda, but before that, it was Miranda as Miranda!

            • demidaemon

So who is playing Tyra during the “ANTM: The Worst Salon Decision of My Life” chapter? Naomi Campbell?

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Actually, after seeing Frances Fisher playing an Anna-alike on Castle the other week (complete with large African American man in a robe) I thought she’d be quite good. Although sadly American.

        • NYCGlamourpuss

      • Qitkat

ALT (softly weeping): Bitch stole my coat!

    • Sara P.

I love that on the main page, it looks like she’s giving Gillian Anderson a serious “WTF?” look.

    • RunAmuck

Pretty sure if I showed up to a restaurant in that outfit where I live, they’d refuse me entrance and kindly ask me to go home and change out of my pajamas before coming back.

    • Alyssa

I wish the coat were closed because I think she forgot pants. Love dark lip on her, and she has the attitude for that coat.

    • marlie

This is a *gorgeous* coat. Only RiRi could make this work so well.

    • tereliz

WANT! I’m sure I could think of a million ways to incorporate this into my daily life. None of them include a silk romper. But RiRi does look the shit. Love the hair and lips.

    • Funkykatt

It seems so odd to me that the 80’s are vintage!

      • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

i was JUST thinking the same thing!

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I KNOW. It was only 5 minutes ago!

      • Anna

        The ’90s are vintage now.

        • Funkykatt

The 90s? I am gonna cry.

          • Anna

I was more or less OK with turning 30. The “I feel old” moments came when I started noticing things I wore in junior high and high school reappearing on the shelves at Forever 21, “Grunge Revival” and “Rave Revival” editorials in magazines and people referring to my beloved Deee-Lite and Lady Miss Kier as “retro.”

            • smayer

Before we know it, Mudd jeans will be retro. Ugh.

            • random_poster

Groove is In the Heart is the first song on my workout playlist, and I don’t care how old that makes me sound.

        • DTLAFamilies

It is fucking hilarious that someone downvoted you for this.

          • Anna

And there wasn’t even anything resembling the words “Kristen” and “Stewart” in that sentence. I didn’t know there were such things as ’90s fanpeople.

            • DTLAFamilies

It’s a 40-something weeping softly with the realization they aren’t the hot young thing anymore.

            • boweryboy

Wait? What? Forty-something isn’t that old. Seriously. How old are you?

            • DTLAFamilies

              Don’t get in a lather, I’m 48. I kid because I’m living it.

            • boweryboy

I was never the hot young thing in the ’80s or ’90 so I can’t relate.

I do find it condescendingly amusing when a 20 something thinks being in your 40s is, like, so old. I never hestitate to call them out on it. So, my bad. I thought you were a young’n.

            • formerlyAnon

I shall not see my 40s again. Y’all are still damn juicy. Work it. 😉

    • jw_ny

What surprises me about this outfit is that she wore it to a restaurant…seems a bit risque for that. It’s more club-wear imo (really more boudoir-wear, but since it’s Rihanna…)

    • Liz

The boys must be tired to miss an opportunity to use “jungle red.”

    • boldprint

      FRRO — For RiRi Only!

    • boweryboy

That coat is all kinds of ’80s fabulous, but what the hell is she wearing under it?

      • kimmeister

Something that probably gave her gynecological problems.

        • boweryboy

I’ll prolly get down voted for this, but to me she seems like a walking gynecological problem.

    • Danielle

    • SewingSiren

Love the coat. Can live with the nail polish and shorts romper. The wig looks like it’s riding too high on her head.

    • Jessica Freeman

I wished for a closed coat with a black skinny pant, but this is RiRi. Pants are not her style.

      • mlle

Due to her pants aversion, I just wished her skirt (?) were two inches longer. Then it looks like a proper minidress, not a nightie underneath.

        • ACHATtychica

It’s a playsuit! If I were to wear it, I, too would need for the hem to be at least two inches longer. But it’s Rihanna and she ain’t got time for that!

    • Anna

Amazing. Going out for Italian food should always look this fabulous. Love the cuffs and her hair.

    • Madam Von Sassypants

FUCK I LOVE THAT COAT. If I could sew I would make a poor woman’s version of this in a sequined heartbeat.

    • housefulofboys

Loooove this coat is so many ways, it is to die for. And I like that she kind of casually threw it on over her basic black romper as if to say, “This old thing? I’ve had it for years…” And yes, the pink nail polish is the only blip here, she could have worn practically any color but pepto pink.

    • SugarSnap108

You’re so right about the nails. This look cries out for the Talons of Doom. But that coat is fabulous enough to override everything else.

    • Kent Roby

That coat and that attitude prove that she doesn’t wear her heart(s) on her sleeve.

    • Ashleigh

WAIT JUST A MINUTE!!! 80’s is “vintage” now??

    • Rand Ortega

I would rock that fucker every day! I’d wear it in the shower if I could. Hot buttered ALT, Tony Duquette, Bette Davis fabulosity!
ETA: I totally get why she downplayed the outfit so not to overshadow the coat, if that’s actually possible, but a deep forest green playsuit would’ve killed it.

    • Erica

Well, I wish she hadn’t forgotten her pants (again), but that coat is stupendous.

    • sienna elm

      LOVE that necklace!!

    • jen

This bitch is werqing it!! Her little jumper is a little casual for the coat but then you get all that leg so it all works out.

      • kimmeister

I’ll bet that’s exactly why she didn’t close the coat, so she could show off those stems.

        • jen

I would never wear pants if I had her legs.

          • kimmeister

I’d wear skinny pants, which I totally cannot now without looking ridiculous.

    • JauntyJohn

Didn’t Allan Carr wear that as a caftan to host a Palm Springs Pool party in…oh, 1978 I think?
Yes, he did. I’m sure of it.
I think it worked a little better there. But only a little, R is a Force, to be sure.

    • Nika E

      That coat is EVERYTHING

    • sugarkane105

      PANTS. Where are they? Trashy.

    • Cheryl

Agreeing with everything on this. Love the coat, don’t like what’s underneath, and DESPISE that horrible bubblegum shade of pink. Love those big bracelets too.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Love the coat, love the makeup (I’m curious to try that lower-eyelid gold – it’s like she’s got DIVA TEARS), love the hair. The onesie is a throwaway and she should have closed the coat, but I’m still dying over this look. Love love love.

    • Anonymous

Bringing back “no pants” in the chicest possible way

    • ashtangajunkie

Oooh, I love this. Her lack of pants never seems to trouble me. Sometimes I don’t even notice, actually.

    • Nancer

In my fantasy life this is how I dress. :]

    • Saturnine

She even has Michelle Pfeiffer’s 80s Scarface hair.

    • Janet B

      Almost perfect.
Fab hair + perfect makeup + buttoned up coat + red nails = WERQ

    • ballerinawithagun

If I had her legs, I would always wear shorts. My mind is going crazy thinking about leopard godets and inserts and sleeves…Then that last shot is perfection…walking away…flashing the Louboutin signature red on the bottom. I own one pair…thanks, Larry.

    • EEKstl

Wow! Something from the 80’s that’s actually FABULOUS! (In addition to a classic Normal Kamali sweatshirt dress, my 80’s uniform).

      • Saturnine

    • Nancy Karpen

I’m not big on the bohemian look but this is spectacular. The romper is unfortunate.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

If only she’d buttoned the coat. But that just may be a personal best for hair and makeup.

    • MissusBee

Reminds me of the Intergalactic Empress coat that Swinton wore the other day. Except that was the ice queen Swinton version, while the wild-child colors and prints make this perfect for Miss Ri.

Be me, do me… bow down before me.

(Except if I wore it, you know I’d look like a deranged fortune-teller.)

    • Megan Kennedy

Gorgeous, gorgeous makeup. I want that lipcolor.

    • KT

That is definitely fabulous, and I kind of love that she’s wearing this caftan-esque coat with a bathing suit-esque dress around Santa Monica/the Palisades. It’s very much a night out on the westside, Rihanna-style. Clever and subversive, love it.

    • Jaeda Laurez

Fabulous. And any one of these pictures looks better than that Vogue cover, which make it all the more puzzling.

    • ACHATtychica

As a die-hard Rihanna fan, my opinion is definitely biased. But I think it’s time we just throw our hands in the air and BOW DOWN to her greatness. This is my favorite look of hers in a very long time. She looks fabulous, and that lipstick is just GORGEOUS.

    • Trickytrisha

That coat is too freaking major to be worn as a coverup. She’s in one of her less raunchy stages here, thank the gods, with gorgeous hair and face, but if she’s wearing this just to go to dinner and a club…bah. This coat deserves an EVENT.

    • Sabin

The rhythm of life is a powerful beat

    • ShaoLinKitten

I looooooooooooooove this coat, but Ri always has to ruin it with some silly style choice, like that bathing suit weirdness she has underneath. Still, the coat is killah.

    • livesarah

I agree about the nail colour being completely wrong. I almost never notice nails, but this time they jumped out at me. I think a metallic teal would have done nicely. I feel like I should hate the coat, but she looks great in it. And the hair/wig is an improvement from that overly-long mass of extensions she’s been sporting recently.

    • annrr

I want one of those bracelets so hard.

      • decormaven

They are divine, yes? Would love to know the maker.

        • CKMia

          Balmain, natch.

    • formerlyAnon

That coat is FABULOUS. It is completely brilliant and I will forgive the fact that I would prefer more romantic hair with it. I say this even though I hate animal print with the venom of extreme, biased prejudice.

    • http://reneshiro.tumblr.com/ kingderella

This looks great. Also love the Wonder Woman cuffs. I wish she would have worn something else than a romper underneath, tho.

    • judybrowni

Great coat, but it’s still February here in Santa Monica, and too chilly in the evening to wear a swimsuit to dinner.

    • ThaliaMenninger

She used to be big. She used to be in silent pictures.

    • CeeRich

I love her fashions far more than her singing. Werq that coat Rih Rih!

    • quiltrx

Awesome coat, looks like an old Hollywood on-screen treasure. Too bad she forgot to wear clothes underneath it.

    • murt

      Gosh she is gorgeous.

    • omg_dora

      That is one tacky bathrobe.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She’s so gorgeous, but she’s kinda scary on these pictures. Maybe it’s the combination of dark hair, the shape of the wig and the goth-lite makeup, but that’s some angry head she’s sporting.

    • RescueMe23

She doesn’t seem like a nice person. I guess its the bitchface all the time. She’s not one of those gals you could imagine being friends with..

    • Crystal

I LOVE HER SO MUCH. She is the president of the Not Many Fucks Coalition.

    • Susannah

Somewhere, a 12-year-old Andre Leon Talley is weeping.

    • AzSportsGirl

Love the fact that a bronze metallic Louboutin pointy-toed pump can be low-key!!

    • amanda lynn

my latest haircut matches that wig. sweet!
