Olivia Munn in J. Mendel at the 2014 Costume Designers Guild Awards

Posted on February 25, 2014

Hunh. She works best working the Jessica Rabbit side of the style street. Who knew?

Olivia Munn attends the 2014 Costume Designers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a J. Mendel ocean silk mousseline draped bodice gown accessorized with Neil Lane earrings, a Calvin Klein clutch, and Casadei heels.

With a little bit of Bettie Page thrown into the mix. We always felt her style was somewhat unformed, but if she really wanted to sell a consistent image for herself, this kind of retro-glam would not be a bad idea at all. If we had any advice for her, we’d tell her to contact Dita Von Teese for some pointers on poise and posing.

Well. That, and we’d probably tell her to stay away from this shade of blue. It’s not awful, but we keep thinking this exact dress in a midnight blue or aubergine would look a lot more striking. Or a red.

Also: the earrings bug. We can do better than that, dear.

Her eye shadow makes her look kind of sickly, no? but otherwise I think she looks gorgeous! A different shade of blue could really do wonders, though.

    • FrigidDiva

I think the shot that’s further off really makes that eye make up look ghastly.

    • tereliz

I love this shade of blue with her hair, but the “punched by a baby” eyeshadow is so wrong—it looks messy and a little greasy. She needs to stop doing her own makeup. The fit on the dress is just amazing, though.

      • SugarSnap108

I’m kind of shocked she could do her own makeup this badly.

      • scoobynacks

This shade of blue was honestly hard to look at for me. It was actually painful to see something that could look beautiful clashing with pretty much the rest of Olivia. Dark hair and blue could look amazing, but not that shade with that skin tone and eye color. Her eyes and that dress are fighting for supremacy and the dress color is overwhelming us. The eye makeup and earrings especially make it worse.

        • AnneElliot

The style is great on her, but the shade of blue is just so twee. And the matchy-matchy accessories ruin it.

    • Danielle

      Consumptive chic.

    • Charles

Totally, she always looks like she’s a few steps away from the flu.

    • TAGinMO

Clearly Bob Costas farted on her pillow.

    • H2olovngrl

I agree. Hated the all the brown and orange tones with that blue dress. If she had gone full monty with the Jessica Rabbit make up, this could have been outstanding. She already has the sultry hooded eyes, she needs to play that shit up!

  • FrigidDiva

I’d also to tell her to call Dita for the number of her make up person. That eyeshadow color looks terrible, and I think I would have liked the color of the dress better if she’d had a stronger lip. That neutral color paired with the eye make up just washed out her face.

    • marlie

The neutral lip almost always makes the makeup look unfinished. And this look needs to be “finished” to really sing.

    • Have I seen that she does her own makeup? Maybe she should look into *any* MUA, doesnt have to be Dita’s!

      • Heather

Miss Dita does her own makeup… but maybe Olivia could persuade Miss Dita to do hers as well.

        • I would love that!

        • FrigidDiva

If Dita does her own make up and manages to look that amazing in front of the cameras on the RC, I’m even in more awe of her.

  • marlie

Who knew that va-va-voom was her thing?! The fit on this dress (while not perfect from the back) is doing all sorts of amazing things to her figure. Plsu, this is a dress with sheer and cutouts that doesn’t make me angry!

I wish she’d changed up the accessories, and gone with a bold lip color, but she looks really great here.

    • alyce1213

I’m not a fan of sheer and cutouts either, but these are done thoughtfully and very tastefully. Seems organic with the ruching, not random or peek-a-boo-ish.

    • jen_vasm

I like the dress, but the draping kind of looks like she tucked the front into her underwear. But seriously, I like it on her!

  • demidaemon

There is something not right about this. It reminds very much of 90s prom and bridesmaid dresses. It may be the color or the over-ruching. Not good. This is probably the best her hair has ever looked, though.

    • Rhonda Shore

That’s exactly what i thought and the color and make-up only accentuate that feeling. The vibe is right but more work remains to be done to get her there.

  • KT

I agree that this is not her color, and her makeup looks really weird too. But the overall effect is nice and very glamorous. Though one more thing — the way the fabric is gathering at the center of the dress makes it look like her vagina is frowning. No one wants a sad vadge.

    • DesertDweller79

Yeah, I don’t love that bunching in the middle there. Looks weird.

Otherwise, the style is indeed very nice on her.

    • Sobaika

It’s been a sad day for the ladyflower here at TLo International.

  • @Biting Panda

Ugh. And yuk. Her makeup is a crime. Her dress is very Adult Film Awards kind of cheap looking.

  • MilaXX

The Good; Hair looks great, dress is pretty and fits well.
The Bad: Makeup is still wrong . Lips aren’t dead, but could be bolder to match this look. The eyeshadow is bad. The earrings are just blah.
Overall a definite step in the right direction but not a homerun.

    • decormaven

Many of our BKs are cosmetic-savvy. I’d love to a little feature where 5 BKs suggest a new palette for a star. Olivia should be the first. She’s got the goods, but they are very rarely displayed to best advantage.

  • Kent Roby

The matchy earrings bother me, too; otherwise she looks fantastic. But, ohmigod, ohmigod; I’m going to see Dita perform at House Of Blues in New Orleans April 8, so excited!

  • If only the neckline were sewn together at that little drawbridge. It would look so much better without that little keyhole! The combination of that and the underarm cutout is just a peekabo too far. And the earrings look like Avon.

    • zenobar

Vintage Avon jewelry is really coming back to haunt us lately, isn’t it?

  • schadenfreudelicious

and where is her best accessory Joel Kinnaman?…

  • susu

    Her hair looks amazing!

  • Adrianna Grężak

Best hair I’ve seen in a while. She looks beautiful

  • jonnyf8

Was Joel there with her? What was he wearing?

  • jilly_d

Amazing gown on her. Worst Makeup in the Galaxy.

  • Mismarker

Hair looks great. She needs a more defined eye and that lip color is not doing her any favors. I’ve seen a lot of lady stars aiming for the “my lips but better” look and landing on “my lips but worse”. See also: today’s Mindy Kaling post. Those earrings look like my grandma’s clip ons from the 70s.

  • appliquer

And the makeup needs some work.

  • Sobaika

Her makeup is godawful and just doesn’t photograph well on the red carpet. And the matchy-but-not-quite jewelry bugs. A lot.

  • Alfred Cox

Question, cause I’m a youngin’: What does the color aubergine look like?
    It sounds fantastic.

    • B_C_J

    • As B_C_J says, it’s eggplant, although I’ve never seen an eggplant the colour of aubergine.

      • kimmeister

        No kidding! They’re nearly black.

        • alyce1213

Yes, but they can go from nearly black to deep purplish, to striped purple-ish/white, to all white.
Somewhere in the range are the aubergines we know from fashion, decorating, art.

  • Janet B

So much better than usual, except for the makeup.

  • Alyssa

Her hair looks very pretty here! I would love for mine to look like that. Although that would require me to quit coloring it so frequently and to grow it out of my pixie cut.

  • KarenFK

I like the concept of her in retro glam and it could work with a different dress. For this one: I don’t care for the pleating across her stomach and the undergarments (or is that lining?) are pretty bad — Did no one take a flash photo of her befroe she left for hte event and notice how those bra cups stand out?

  • SugarSnap108

Her hair looks good, but everything else is … Eh. I remember the casual stroll-down-the-street shot of her the other day, and she looked so much better (including makeup-wise) there than here, IMO.

  • alyce1213

The décolletage on this is very good. She’s showing just the right amount of cleavage to hit a very sexy note without popping or falling out of the dress. That little tab connecting the neckline goes a long way to prevent wardrobe malfunction and mitigate the deep plunge. I don’t love the dress, but I like it on her, and aubergine would be great.
    Her hair is fucking amazing.

    • Imasewsure

Yes it’s the old school Sophia Loren/Liz Taylor plunge not the “don’t you like my sternum” look that we’ve been subjected to lately!

    • AnneElliot

Yes!! The fit in the bust is just perfect — sexy but not tacky.

  • shaziz

we need some diamond earrings or let em go nekkid. That dress is cut beautifully tho-

  • kimmeister

This dress reminds me of the red dress January Jones wore at the 2011 Golden Globes, but better. Big points for that, but demerits for the makeup and accessories.

  • PastryGoddess

What punched her in the eye. Does she have Costas Conjunctivitis?

    • livesarah

That seems to be her go-to colour for eye makeup, and it’s all kinds of wrong.

  • stubbornthoughts

I don’t mind the blue if someone hadn’t beaten makeup onto her. Great dress and style, despite the makeup assault.

  • Imasewsure

Ooh I love this blue on her (and just in general). I’m ignoring the hiddy midriff pucker – love the top half on her and the hair

  • The only thing that bugs me is that fold in the front where it looks like she accidentally tucked her dress into her underwear.

  • Kate4queen

    she looks…nice!

  • E. D.

Wow, everything looks great except the makeup. She has to either get some tips or hire someone she trusts.

  • HeatherMcIlrath

what a huge step for her! every red carpet picture of her i’d seen before just fell flat because her looks never had succinct impact. i have never seen her look so cohesive and put together!

however…posing with your arms in front of you like a toddler is just downright weird when you are wearing a beautifully draped, sex pot gown. just don’t.

  • tonibaloney

She finally found some blotting papers!

  • MK03

Feh. She’s on my Irrational Hate List, though, so I’ll always be biased.

  • luluransom

For some reason I love all the hooha and folderol around the middle. Usually not my cup of tea. Agree with you abut the color, Uncles. Also, where does one get a job that requires wearing a ‘silk mousseline bodice gown’ to work? I missed my calling.

  • boweryboy

    Fabulous but she looks tired.

    • martha

      It’s that orange eyeshadow.

  • judybrowni

That orange eye shadow back from the dead of 30 years ago, needs to die again, never to be resurrected

  • conniemd

Her face here, and particularly the eyes, looks the best I’ve ever seen.

Edit. I see others disagree, but she’s always looked odd to me and her eyes look coherent with the rest of her face here.

  • MzzPants

The bra petals should better match her skin tone. They’re distracting.

  • quiltrx

The best I’ve ever seen her hair look, anyway.

  • Dagney

Good god FINALLY. Love the shape. Love the color. Love the hair. Love the makeup. Love the more normal, non-orange skin tone. Gorgeous.

    • Shawn EH

She looks hot here, and I’m sure that’s to some extent her goal. I’ve always felt she was going for Olivia Wilde territory, and just missing her shots with one misstep or another … until now!

  • SierraDelta

I’m not sure what I’m seeing covering her breasts. Boob wrangling devices? Nursing pads? Something that’s only visible in photo flashes?

  • Ugh. The make-up. Lips! Please!

  • Sarah

Meeehhhh. Hate the color – I think this would be stunning in an off-silver color. It would go great with her dark hair.

I weep at the very thought of the makeup again. It makes my makeup-artist eyes burn.
