IN or OUT: Mindy Kaling in Salvador Perez at the 2014 Costume Designers Guild Awards

Posted on February 25, 2014

Gather ’round, girls. We need to get some judging done. Meet us in Judging Conference Room A. There’s donuts.

Mindy Kaling attends the 2014 Costume Designers Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California in a dress designed by costume designer Salvador Perez.

The color is absolutely gorgeous on her and from far away, the fabric looks rich and glamorous. Get in a little closer, though, and it looks … decidedly less so. But her hair and makeup are gorgeous and the accessorizing is dead on. Love the bag and the bracelets. If nothing else, she’s styled well. But we have to say it: this silhouette isn’t her friend. That cheap-looking sash around her waist doesn’t help.

Basically, the pros and the cons on this one are about equal, but we’re leaning toward calling this one an OUT, ourselves. But the final word is up to you.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! She is giving me color and sparkle!

OUT! Pageant gown.

The Kittens Who Are Bitter could not bring themselves to love Cate Blanchett’s Baked Potato dress, voting it a big ol’ OUT.

Almost too close to call, but I’m going with “in” based on that color alone.

  • Toni

I think it would help if we could see the uncovered shoulder. In that one shot with her hair flipped back, it makes her torso look less blocky. I agree that I would have tried different belts.

    • 3boysful

Yes, I am perplexed by the belt. At first I said, Oh, No! But then decided that the darker color did help define her waist. Nevertheless, it’s still not a flattering silhouette, and the fabric is dated-looking.

  • I don’t see the point of wearing a one-shoulder gown and then hiding all that detail in your hair. And I disagree a bit on the makeup, I think they’ve gone way overboard on the apple cheeks. However, I love the colour and I love the bangles and earrings, so a small IN.

    • Introspective

she needs to fire her makeup artist because more often than not her face color doesnt match her neck or arms, the shimmer is so extreme as to make her shiny, and the blush looks to be attacking her, while the lip leaves me wanting more.

there is too much butchery about the face going on here for such a pretty woman. And then this dress? ugh. its so giving me catering hall wedding in the bronx in 2004 (I say this as a proud bronx broad– i know this look all too well)

      mindy can do way better.

  • lbl

OUT. It looks like a cheap Macy’s dress from every distance.

    • CupcakeTrudy

Agreed. Out. I find the combination of color + lace + sash + sequins to be very Macy’s JR section. This reads Prom more than Pageant to me.

      • Anne

Completely agree. I saw this and thought cheap prom, ugly shape. OUT

    • DeebaCee

Agreed. I kept thinking high school homecoming dance or prom. Also, I’m not loving the hair or makeup. Definite OUT

  • SarahVN

Oh, no, OUT. Everything about this look is awful, except for the earrings and maybe the hair. I actually think her makeup is not great.

    • Nariya

Agreed on the makeup. The foundation’s looking a bit ashy-grey (and yet shiny), the lip is going for nude but ends up kind of dull brown, and the cheeks are too pinky-pinky. Actually, agreed with SarahVN on everything. Such prom.

  • carnush

She’s too cool for this dress. Cheap-looking fabric and outdated shape. OUT.

    • leahpapa

(First of all, love your avatar.) I don’t know why she doesn’t go for full-on fierce as opposed to precious, which I think is her default setting. Get me some I-am-a-showrunning-mogul-in-the-making for her.

    • SugarSnap108

Yes, the very dated silhouette bugs me even more than the cheapness of the fabric and that awful netting on top.

    • Zaftiguana

I called her a very close IN, but I still agree with this. You’re too good for this dress, Mindy-Honey!

  • Lori

In, by a nose. I’m giving it to her because the color is terrific, the accessorizing is so good and she looks happy in it. I do wish it had been in a non-shiny fabric, that she hadn’t done the mermaid hair and that the belt was different.

  • MzzPants

It’s hard to argue with the impeccable fit of a custom gown. Considering that her red carpet looks are hit and miss, and that she looks pretty damn good here, I’m giving this an IN.

    • TropiCarla

Agreed. I also vote IN because it’s doing way better things for her shape than her usual garb.

    • ConnieBV

Yep, fit, color and obvious happiness make it an IN for me. I liked the fabric more in the thumbnails, but this is from a costume designer who is probably not used to picking something that photographs well on a red carpet as much as TV. He should have just used some beading if he wanted to define her waist.

  • Rand Ortega

I’m holding onto that incredible color like Buster Keaton to a giant clock hand, but the gown is unavoidably the sum of its flaws. OUT (Sorry, Mindy, darling. Love your hair & makeup & your show!)

    • MoHub

      Harold Lloyd, not Buster Keaton.

      • Rand Ortega

Handing in my film geek card. I stand corrected. More coffee, please!

        • MoHub

No problem. But I’m a big fan of Lloyd, and that scene in Safety First is classic.

          • Eclectic Mayhem

            Safety Last

          • MoHub

            Right you are. Will fix.

      • Eclectic Mayhem

Thank you MoHub. Speaking (writing) as the VP of the International Buster Keaton Society – I kid you not – if we had a nickel for every time someone said it’s Buster on that clock face we’d be very rich indeed. *sigh*

        • another_laura

Hang on – this exists? Deets, please, Ms. Mayhem!

          • Eclectic Mayhem

Yes! We’ve been running for about 21 years now. Our website is going to be relaunched soon so it’s not much to look at right now (www dot busterkeaton dot com); there’s a store (www dot busterstuff dot com) with all the info on membership if you’re interested; we’re on twitter (@ busterkeatonsoc) and there’s an FB page – look for “Buster Keaton” and the group that has about 30,624 ish ‘likes’! I’m just about to head over there and post a lovely bit of Buster street art that’s in a skate park in northern France.

  • TrixieConQueso

Mindy looks happy. The shape is flattering for her curvy bits and so it is an IN from me.

  • Leah Elzinga

OUT. Bridesmaid dress, all the way, and not an expensive one either.

    • Adelaidey

I was just thinking that. I’ve been asked to wear that dress before, and I wasn’t thrilled about it.

    • I was going to say suburban lady aspiring to Real Housewives glamor, but same thing.

  • sojourneryouth

Out. The color is amazing against her rich skin, but she’s a short, rounded woman, so the dress overwhelms her. I think that she is really talented, and I’m glad to see her in the public eye being herself, but she rarely gets her outfits right. Trains are not for short people. If this were shortened to cocktail length and the silly belt was taken off and burned behind a 7-11, it would be a mild In for me.

    • sagecreek

I agree completely! Needed to be shorter.

    • CupcakeTrudy

I don’t think the shape or train overwhelm her. But, I hate pretty much everything else about this gown, including the color. A young media mogul with a stated love for fashion should be swinging much higher than this. Edit to add: while I don’t think this overwhelms her, it could be better fitted.

  • This is the best she and her stylist could come up with? For the COSTUME DESIGNER’S GUILD gala? Please. Sparkly brocade fabric is not anyone’s friend, although the color is stunning on her. The jewelry is nice, her hair needs to be tamed, and her waist needs to be less stringently cinched. OUT.

  • Tracy M

The makeup is terrible! The color is lovely, but other than that, I can’t get on board. Out.

  • RedRaven617

IN. She looks beautiful, happy and self confident. I think she looks great.

  • Betsy

In, by first impression. Way too much makeup, though.

  • Evie

The silhouette “isn’t her friend” if you think it’s not okay for her to look pear-shaped, I guess. She *is* pear-shaped though, and petite, and curvy, and I don’t see why she should hide any of that.

    • Thank you for putting words in our mouths. That’s always fun. But we think it’s a little too tight in the bust and doesn’t need the mermaid flair at the bottom of the skirt. Plus it’s too long on her. And to be honest, we’d have fit it a little better across the hips and ditched that horrible sash.

The only person who mentioned and described her body shape is you.

      • Evie

To me, silhouette means shape; I think that’s a fairly reasonable presumption, but it’s cool if we’re working off different definitions. I agree with you on the sash, and defer to you on the fit issues, but wouldn’t have thought either has a great impact on the silhouette in this case.

        • Changing the fit across the bust and hips and eliminating the flair would alter the silhouette.

          • scoobynacks

Completely agree on all points, T&L. My first thought was about the silhouette and my second about that fabric up close. I get what she was going for, and she obviously feels great, but the fit on the hips could’ve been so much better. I saw people saying it looked junior or prom-like and honestly I can totally see this being worn by that kind of girl. Just don’t get the bottom of the dress. I tried really hard to like it but gotta go with Out.

  • Dan_In_NYC

Hair great, color great, accessories REALLY great. But shiny face, cheap fabric and unflattering silhouette. She’s clearly loving herself in this, so it make me WANT to lean toward IN, but alas….out.

  • alyce1213

Out. Maybe it’s nicer in person, but this dress photographs really cheap.

  • nannypoo

She’s wearing a little too much blusher and the fabric does look cheap, but she’s a very pretty woman and she looks great here.

  • jen_vasm

That color on her is outstanding and I don’t mind the fabric as much as I should. Her hair is beautiful, but congests the neck & shoulder area. I have the biggest problem with her makeup – it’s overly shiny and the foundation color has a grey tinge to it. I would’ve gone with a bit more contrast color for the lip, too.

  • @Biting Panda

IN. She looks like a princess, but not obnoxiously so.

  • ralish

Out, primarily because that makeup is absolutely terrible, and the fabric on that dress looks Forever 21 cheap (and I’m sure it wasn’t.)

  • Sarah

I was sort of surprised that you guys liked the makeup until I looked at the close-ups, because from farther away it wasn’t that noticeably good – I see in the head shots that her eyes look great though. An updo would have been nice with this look, but now that I think on it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her rock one. Maybe she doesn’t care for them? As for the dress, I give it a reserved IN because she really does look good in that color, and I don’t think the fit is bad, at all.

  • Slade Thunderdragon

In my humble, unprofessional opinion this looks like a WERQ. I think she looks gorgeous from head to toe.

  • Anne Elliot

she never looks completely good on red carpets. there is always something a bit off. girl needs a new stylist

  • clairehj7

IN! I think she looks great. I quibble about her hair being down b/c of the one shoulder, but I think she looks fab.

  • Jessica Freeman

I think this was a custom gown, and for it to look so cheap makes it an automatic OUT. Make up is looking a bit caked on as well.

    • marlie

I think that’s my problem with her makeup… it’s almost always too caked-on and heavy.

  • ballerinawithagun

Out, that type of brocade is very tricky, as with this one, they look cheap very easily. The detail at the shoulders look interesting, wish we could see it.

  • ojosazules

In. Agree with the picky stuff, but she looks gorgeous.

  • Anna

Love the colour on her and the accessories. The overall look though is discount prom dress from the mall and the blush is awful. Sorry Mindy!

  • muelonil

IN. The dress has its flaws, but that is not an easy color for a lot of women to pull off and she’s making that dress sing for her.

  • Patrick Cleary

IN! She looks lovely, and the dress is bringing out the gorgeousness of her shape.

  • rissa42210

OUT. She looks put together, and that almost tipped her in, but this is not chic, darling.

  • Tracy Walker

In for me. She’s flaunting those hips and that color gives life.

  • StelledelMare

    I definitely say IN.

  • Brittany

I think she looks great, and she clearly thinks she looks great, so IN.

  • sagecreek

Oh, I love her so much and I want to take her out for coffee, but alas, no, this is out. Bad silhouette on her, and basically looks like she’s playing dressup out of her mom’s closet.

  • Liz

In for the color and that smile. Not loving the makeup, in the thumbnail all I see are pink cheeks!

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

In for the color, and because she’s clearly loving herself in it.

  • Kristin

Oh, Mindy, my love, how I wish you could dress yourself better. You are too gorgeous to be wearing this kind of cheap and tacky bargain bin prom dress. OUT from me unfortunately. The sash offends me greatly.

  • It’s not a mega-IN, but it’s an IN nonetheless. The color is gorgeous and she looks happy and comfortable in her own skin. Go Mindy!

  • gabbilevy

It falls apart on close inspection, a little, but she clearly loves wearing it and that goes a long way. In.

  • cocohall

Beautiful color, but a bit “pageant” with that sash around her waist (“It slipped off my shoulder so much that I just gave up and made it into a belt” – That seems like something our Miss K would do!) But in the grand scheme of things, she looks glamourous and sexy and wouldn’t you want to sit at HER table for the evening?

  • eowyn_of_rohan

IN. Pageant gown, yes. But a nice one. And she gets points for her talent part of the competition and for how happy she looks to be wearing it.

  • Julie Chase

In-she looks like she loves the SHIT out of that dress. And I’m digging the color and the sex hair.

  • Danielle

In because I’m blinded by my love for her.

  • Garcia Loca

While the fabric is quinceanera-ish, the color and shape look fantastic on her. IN.

  • NBG

IN. She’s owning it plus the hair and makeup look terrific.

  • StellaZafella

IN. Mindy looks great and that’s worth the vote…
The dress needed a little bit more thought and an up do would show off the shoulder treatment.

  • KinoEye

That color is her best friend, but the nude lip is not. Love the earrings, but they’re too matchy. And why did one wrist get to have all the fun with bracelets? A tepid IN based on how confident she looks in the dress, and the fact that it’s not a total trainwreck. Some of this is working for her.

  • Pepper Collins

  • Mismarker

That color is amazing on her. I would ditch the satin sash and give her a little more lip color. She looks great! IN.

  • StarburstLady

I do love the color on her, and I’m not totally opposed to the shape, but that face… it looks sloppy drag queen to me. Eesh. Too much blush, too much shine. OUT on that alone.

  • Rhonda Shore

OUT. I dig the idea of accentuating one’s flaws proudly but this dress takes that way over the top. I do love the color though.

  • Stacey Summerville

    In!!!! Lurve her

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

In – she deserves to be graded on a curve.

  • boweryboy

OUT. It does not flatter her body the way she thinks it does.

  • teensmom99

IN. When I saw the pictures Mindy posted, I hoped you’d judge. I think she gets extra points for feeling so good about this. You can just see that she is feeling beautiful. I would have liked a darker lip. And it definitely looks best from waist up. I liked that this is a nod to her Indian heritage: it’s not a sari but it makes you think of a sari and it has that sari-like bedazzlement. So that’s why I call it an in, despite the issues that the uncles so kindly point out.

    • KinoEye

I was kind of thinking it resembled a sari, too. Especially the bold color and beading. Good to know I wasn’t the only one! Now, if only she’d had some bonkers Indian jewelry to go with it — I have an Indian friend who knows how to bring the bling, and she laughs at what we silly Americans call “jewelry.”

      • teensmom99

I actually thought that the sari-like thing was inspired by the Costume Designers idea. I love that she has bangles as a nod but not going full-Indian but I also like the Indian style bling.

    • MaggieMae

I thought the same thing. A nod to the sari. IN! IN! IN!

    • marlie

When you point out the sari-like references, I like it a little more. I still don’t love it, but good call!

  • mmebam

In. That color is SO compelling.

  • lizajane1776

Hate the hair pulled forward look, always, and that lip needs a bit more color, but she is owning her curves and looks happy. IN.

  • Blair Sylvester

In because yay color and fit and she looks happy and is selling the hell out of this dress.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

OUT. I can’t get over the silhouette and how wrong it is for her (and how tired I am of the mermaid silhouette in general).

  • Daisy Walker

    Nope. Pageant. OUT.

  • Kate

Yikes, her makeup looks terrible to me. The blush! Oh, the humanity!

  • JulieK

I’m going to say IN. I love the dress. I think if she lost the sash and put her hair up, it would be a perfect look for her.

  • Valerie Dunbar Jones

Love the smile, love the face, love the color, can live with the fabric – even the train. Clearly, she feels like a goddess, and that’s awesome. However, I’d bet you $5 the belt was something she asked for. She could have been just a tad bolder. It’s ok to rock that waistline, Mindy! You’re fabulous! Agree about brushing the hair away to show the one-shoulder detail, but maybe that would have made it look that much more pageanty. IN anyway.

  • Jaeda Laurez

IN- although i dislike the makeup. She needs blotting papers. I love the color and the dress though- girl’s got hips; no need to hide em.

  • jw_ny

The color is fantastic on her, and the sparkles and fabric gives a nod to her heritage. I’m ok with the shape, could be a bit fuller at the bottom for balance, and I’m not really liking the sash too. I’d like to have seen more formal her shoulder, one less bangle, and the nude lip is not doing it for her here. Overall tho, I think it’s pretty, and in the right direction for her.

  • Delaney

IN! I adore her and overall she just looks wonderful and happy.

  • Glam Dixie

She lost the rest of the wedding party, out.

  • Janet B

    Pro: The color and accessories.
Con: The dress in general; her hair covering up her shoulders; her cheeks have a bit too much color, her lips don’t have enough.

  • Jacob Bowen

Out because the fabric is even STILL too cheap to be a pageant gown and her blush is aggressively clownish.

  • Emily S

IN! and I really love her hair.

  • decormaven

She’s always IN, but this dress is sadly out. Sash bugs, and her hair should be swept up so the shoulder detail can be appreciated. Do love the bangles and clutch, though, and the earrings are a nice touch.

  • schadenfreudelicious

I would prefer less colour on her cheeks and more on her lips…the colour of the dress is lovely on her, but agree with our Uncles that the fit and shape is awkward, alas OUT

  • Judy_S

I will give her an IN for looking great in her prom gown.

  • jilly_d

Love the color and LOVE those earrings. Unfortunately the fabric looks cheap and that sash is straight up Davids Bridal. OUT

  • ashtangajunkie

In. Not the greatest once you do a closer inspection, but she does look beautiful.

  • CommentsByKatie

I feel like she is channeling Elsa and that makes me LOVE IT despite everything.

  • Erica

I’m not seeing any problem with the silhouette on her–I think it’s much better with her curves than some other stuff she’s worn, and the color is great on her. Not loving the shininess, but otherwise an IN for me.

    • serenab44

IN…color alone is perfect for her skin tone and yeah, I don’t mind the shape on her.

    • scoobynacks

I remember that navy dress that worked so well with her body and it’s hard to shake. She can do better showing off her curves than this. If I didn’t know that I might give her credit, but she’s already shown she can do it.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

In! With no reservations. She doesn’t get it this right very often. I think she looks amazing – very feminine, soft. The color is prefect.

  • SewingSiren

The color and silhouette are perfect for her. Loves the earrings and bangle bracelets . I don’t like the hair covering the shoulder detail , but that’s pretty much my only complaint.

  • LilyVanessi

IN – It’s a close call, but she looks like she loves it and the color is great. I agree about the makeup, but the rest of the accessories are quite good. I don’t even mind the sash, it helps give the dress definition.

  • Michelle

In, barely. The color and styling are pretty good for her, but she does look like she stumbled into the prom section of Macy’s

  • Therese Bohn

    In. I love her.

  • Megan Kennedy

OUT. 8th grade prom. Great to see her show off her curves, and she does look happy, but I can’t with that fabric.

  • BLauD

My gut reaction was, “Ack! What cheap looking fabric!” So it’s an out for me, though I do love the color.
Not sold on the super apple cheeks either. Loving the accessories though!

    • Yup, I thought the same thing. Looks like fabric you’d see in a mall prom dress shop. Nice color, nice shape, ruined by incredibly tacky looking fabric.

  • Jangle57

I read that she had a hand in designing this so she must like the way she looks in it. The color is gorgeous on her. Could it have been better? Sure, but still I’m giving it an IN (a less flattering color though and my decision would have been quite different).

  • PeggyOC

In for the color and shape. I would have liked her to put her hair up, as down it’s shortening her neck and taking away from the drama of the one shoulder top line.

  • Alyssa

Pros: gorgeous color on her, great eye makeup, great clutch, great earrings. Cons: the sash, not-so-luxe fabric, cheeks too rosy, I’d prefer a different lip color. Also, I think this called for an updo or at least the hair off the shoulders. However, I say IN…she was born to wear that color.

    • TRSTL

Totally agree on the hair! It is so distracting from the one shoulder neck line, which is really one of the best parts of the dress.

  • CraynoChic

Absolute IN. She’s had some disasters in the past and overall she looks really happy and the color is phenomenal on her.

  • Richard Banger

The sash is so wrong! But this is an “ALMOST THERE!” for me so I vote IN

    • Molly

I agree completely! I think if the sash was even 1″ lower, it would be an unequivocal IN.

  • NinjaCate

OUT! I do love the colour, but this dress makes her look so much wider than she is. And I actually hate the makeup personally.

  • NMMagpie

On the fence: color is great and the train is one hot mistake.

An OUT from me! The color is wonderful on her but that is some cheap looking fabric. HATE that sad sash thing and, IMO, if you do a one shoulder bodice/neckline, don’t cover it up with hair then. I think this called for pulled back hair. But she should keep that color close at hand……

  • While there are quibbles, I think she looks beautiful. Even better, she looks like *she* feels really good in it. Love the color. IN!

  • pookiesmom

IN. I love this; it looks sari-inspired to me and that is a beautiful color on her.

  • msdamselfly

OUT Agree about fabric-loved it from afar. Sash is ruining the dress. Too much blush

  • greathill

I follow her on Instagram and I believe this dress was designed by the person who does costuming for her show. He made this for her to wear because she was presenting an award. She is very loyal to her costumers.

  • belfebe

Looks too bridesmaidy to me. Color, shape, fit, hair and makeup gorgeous though. It’s still an OUT but a step in the right direction

  • DinaSews

I’m giving it a small ‘IN’. It’s borderline but compared to the shapes she usually wears, I think this is an improvement.

  • theotherjdekay

In. Gorgeous color. You can tell she feels beautiful in it.

  • OUT.

  • Daktari100

IN …but mostly because that color on her is everything.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I love the color, but I’m not liking that style of dress on MIndy-it’s not doing her justice-so, after consideration, OUT>

  • Stella Zawistowski

Ooh, no. The fabric and the beading are going very mother of the bride for me. OUT.

  • elirt

It looks like a cross between a prom dress and a bridesmaid dress, a very pretty prom/braidesmaid dress. I think she looks great and she’s obviously feelin’ it so I say it’s in!

  • stubbornthoughts

Wish the hair was pulled back, but she’s a really pretty girl. Dig the color, hate the dress. Too prom for me. OUT.

Side note: I actually dig the silhouette. Love seeing them hips! At least this dress shows off her waist.

  • Lilithcat

Yes, the color is fabulous, but shiny satin covered with lace and sparkles is never a good thing.

  • IowaKitten

I love the color, but it could be so much better. OUT.

  • bertkeeter

Fits right on…but fabric is not doing the look any favors and then there’s The WHITE BAG!!!

  • Bailey Debruynkops

    out because sash

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

IN–she looks like she feels gorgeous, and I love the eye makeup.

  • lamamu

She just looks like she feels beautiful. That’s always an IN in my book.

  • MW

OUT, the fabric and accessories make it all too bridesmaid adapted for the red carpet.

  • filmcricket

I’m going “in.” The colour is stunning, the fit is superb, and I’ve decided the netting is her ode to figure skaters. I bet Mindy likes a good drama on ice.

  • Sarah Jane

There’s a way to flatter a pear-shaped figure and this ain’t it. She looks all hips and no legs. But, that color is stunning on her. I base my In or Out on whether I think she’d ever wear this again – and I think not. So I say OUT.

  • MilaXX

OUT! I like the color on her and I like the accessorizing. Somehow the dress is coming off as a cheap bridesmaid and I do not like the face at all. The foundation looks off (I think she’s using bronzers that don’t photograph well) and she has dead lips.

  • CatherineRhodes

    OUT. Tacky

  • lobsterlen

    In for the color.

  • Carleenml

In, if only for her hair. I LOVE her styled like this. Gorgeous!

  • AlexisPayne

In- Look how happy and pleased she looks, she is making that dress work! Love the styling. Mindy, more of this hair and make-up on the red carpet.

  • heartbot

I think she looks fabulous. The color is amazing on her, and her hair and make up are gorgeous.

  • another_laura

    mmmmmm … donuts…..

Coming off my sugar high, this is “out.” The color is working so well, but this is a zoom-in fugly look. Color great, make-up bad, earrings bad, close-up on the fabric reveals some cheapness. Yes, it’s got to be an “Out.”

  • colorjunky

OUT!! Looks too tacky up close. I think her blush is overdone up close, you? Are the donuts gluten-free?

  • uprightcitizen

The dress shape is kind of sweet and the color is smashing, but can’t agree that the makeup is gorgeous. She needs some powder or less bronzer or something because that face is so shiny she looks like ran there alongside her limo. And the naked lip color with such a bold dress looks like she just ran out of time. Agree about the accessories, though. Terrific earrings to wear with long, thick hair.

  • dash1211

Out. This is about three steps away from my grandmother’s dressiest outfit.

  • conniemd

Small in. Looks too much like a sarong or sari. Color is nice, though.

    • Tracy_Flick

Oooh, I like the “small in” concept. I give it a small in too. I think the dress looks nice, that’s a great color on her. But her hair needs to be up and she’s approaching Mimi Bobek levels of eye makeup. She has gorgeous coloring, she doesn’t need all that spackle.

  • mrspotts66

    in. love it.

  • surfergirl70

It’s a little pageant-y, but she’s working it. She looks gorgeous. IN

  • Shawn EH

    The color saves it. In!

  • majorbedhead

I don’t think that shape is doing her any favors, but she’s pretty short waisted, so I don’t know what kind of shape would work there. The color is gorgeous, but I’m going with OUT because I don’t like anything else but the color.

  • Jennifer L.

In. She looks absolutely gorgeous and glowing!

  • unpious

IN. Not the best shape for her, no, but not the worst. The color is amazing, I need those earrings in my everyday life, and her hair is just so pretty. And she looks like she is loving that dress, which always counts for a lot.

  • i actually like the shape, but not the fabric at all…and maybe not the color either. it looks like a prom dress, let’s be honest. it’s an OUT for me.

  • brown-eyed girl

Love the color and her hair. In!

  • Zaftiguana

Boy, I give her a baaaarely IN. This is too department store prom dress for a star of her caliber, but I have to admit that in the end, she still looks good, and that’s always going to tip things for me in the final analysis.

  • unbornfawn

It is a very close call. The color is pretty, the fit is right on. I’m loving her curves. The proportions, not so much. The belt is cutting her off and making her look squat. The fabric up close looks cheap, it would be great on stage. I’m not liking the make-up, they went overboard on the blush. OUT.

  • Cheryl

In. A little too shiny for my taste, and way too much blush, but I still think she looks pretty.

  • Angh

I’d say “in” because she looks happy in it and that color is FAB!

  • Kelly

    Out. Tacky.

  • PeaceBang

The dress is on the verge. The very bad make-up job pushes the look from “barely in” to Out.

  • E. D.

IN, although I don’t like the bag/bracelet combo. I feel like the bag needs to be a different color.

  • JauntyJohn

  • tired_mommy

small in–mainly because she looks pretty happy with it

  • Bozhi

In. Everything here works for me.

  • barbarienne

OUT. The dress looks cheap. Maybe that’s why she has her hair pulled forward–trying to hide the tacky netting.

  • vitaminC

It was a tentative in, until I saw that tacky netting under her hair. I’ve seen more luxe dresses at childrens’ beauty pageants. OUT.

  • phrenk

I adore the color and think the silhouette is lovely on her. IN!

  • kimmeister

This is just about at 50/50 for me. I’m going to call it just on this side of OUT because, as a fan of fashion and style, Mindy should know that short waisted gals are not done any favors by wearing wide belts.

  • SportifLateBoomer

At first glance I was liking it, because the one shoulder, draping, and bangles gave me an East Indian sari vibe so I thought it was nice she was honoring her ethnic heritage. But upon closer look, the fabric looks so cheap and I don’t think the fit does her any favors. And doesn’t it look like string belt loops on the sides of the sash? Ouch. Sorry it’s a NO. Would iike those earrings though, as I have a vintage aquamarine pendant they would match perfectly.

  • lunchcoma

The sash is cheap-looking, but everything about it is nice enough and I don’t find the shape objectionable. I’m going to vote in, especially since Kaling ca do a lot worse.

  • Slanted & Enchanted

IN. I don’t like the dress itself, but I like it on her.

  • It looks like a cheap prom dress from her junior year.

  • melanie0866

IN. It fits. She looks beautiful. Done.

  • reddhouston

  • Kate Andrews

Do not like. Also, I think she looks perspirational (I’m being nice).

  • KT

This is a tough call. It’s a high-impact look, and in its best version, it’s “Bollywood Star,” and in its worst version, it’s “My Super Sweet Sixteen: Prom Edition.” I actually think that this silhouette is her friend, and though I agree that sash is cheap-looking, it does a good job of showing off her waist — her curves are nicely defined here. Agree that the hair and makeup are quite pretty, and she looks confident in this getup….

Ohhh but I don’t think I can do it. The more I look at it, the more it reeks of tacky southern beauty queen. Yes, this event is in honor of costume designers, but that doesn’t mean she had to dress up for Halloween. Out.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

LOVE the color but hate the dress.
    IN-ish, though, for the color.

  • frannyprof

IN. Love the color and shape.

  • LaSylphide

In. Shape and color, two of the essentials, are there. I think the bracelet is a little focus pulling, but it’s beautiful (and I want it).

  • trisker

IN. love how the color makes her luminous.

  • Kate

Sweep the hair back or to the size and let that top detail shine through. Speaking of shine, a little matte powder and some blotting papers in the clutch would go a long way for La Kaling. (If she’s anything like me, a touch of humidity or an elevated body temp of 98.7 sends her into frizz-and-schvitz mode.) Other than that, I say IN. She is feeling good about herself and everyone else has said everything else I want to say.

  • mjude

  • KTI4000

I’m voting IN because she looks happy, like she feels gorgeous and sexy, and clothes should make you feel gorgeous, sexy and happy.

  • mickeymammoth

OUT. It fits her well, but the cut just makes her look short and wide. We can’t all have Sofia Vergara figures.

  • amaranth16

I love the color on her so, so much, and I like the embellishments, so I’m willing to overlook the tacky mesh. Her skin looks glowy and amazing, but I find that the overall look of the makeup is a bit tepid; I think she should have gone with a darker lip. Big, bold, pretty earrings and lovely bracelets/clutch. So I’m an IN, with these qualifications.

  • demidaemon

I am having a very major anti-shiny fabric moment, which involves cheap looking fabric as well, so I’m calling this one an OUT. Sorry, Mindy. Just the wrong day.

  • Imasewsure

That is a difficult and kind of unflattering shape for her but she still looks great and the dress is gorgeous on her. IN

  • nycfan

She looks like she feels IN and the color is a win, so I say IN.

  • DeniseSchipani

I’m calling it a qualified IN. I don’t like the shape or the fabric, but it fits well and she looks comfortable. Now. Where’s my donut?

  • Kate4queen

In. I like it. 🙂 She looks lovely.

  • Meri

In for the color and her smile… and the earrings

  • FancyPhilly

In! Based almost entirely on me being in love with her. Love the color.

  • km092407

In!! She looks stunning, and she knows it.

  • Nicole Little

The dress doesn’t look good but she looks good in it, which is more important, so it’s an “in” for me.

  • marlie

I don’t like it. The color is great, but the dress looks like a cheaply-made department store evening gown/bridesmaid dress. Her makeup artist went WAY overboard with her blush, though her hair looks pretty great.

  • irielle

It is close, but I’m going with ‘in’ because that’s such a super color on her.

  • gracedarling

OUT. I don’t usually recommend a braid on the red carpet, but a braid and a load of gold bangles might have saved this look – it would look like a cheeky nod to the sari, not a cheap prom dress. As it is, it is doing her no favours.

  • Christy

  • Me Again

In, although I think her hair should be behind her shoulders.

  • a_liking

I am getting way too many “sweet 16 party for a pampered princess” vibes. out.

  • shaziz

I’ve actually never seen her look better. Perfect hair and m/u- fab accessories- fab color- werq-ing her curves- would have rather nixed the sash but it’s a valiant effort.

  • SophieCollier

The gown is fine, but did she coat her face in Vaseline?

  • Shug

Out. Early 2000s prom dress. 🙁

  • River

In. Not sure I understand what people think is wrong with the silhouette…that it shows off her curvy figure? Not in love with the sash and yes, the fabric doesn’t photograph well–I have to wonder if it looks nicer in person? But overall, I like it.

  • livesarah

IN for the dress. OUT for whoever did her makeup- I think it’s awful. It actually looks like they’ve used blush to contour her forehead around her hairline ?!

  • Melanie Clark

IN! I think she looks gorgeous!

  • OUT, my first thoughts were literally “Miss Universe.”

  • CeeQ

Oh honey, no. Great hair, face and accessories can not overcome the aggressive mother of the bride vibe from this dress. Vampy mother of the bride who tries all day to steal the spotlight from her daughter. YIKES. Out.

  • Columbinia

  • lesmaha

    In cuz color.

  • Danielle West

In just because she is clearly so happy and comfortable in it.

  • quiltrx

I’m going to give her a slight IN for this. The color is great, her face and hair look terrific, and she obviously feels good in this look.
(I’m going to just give the side-eye to the center-boob seam and the tulle overlay…I’m going to squint and pretend this is brocade.)

  • Courtney

Out, for me. I expect I’ll see one or two just like it at the senior prom, which is not usually a good measure for a red carpet look.

  • Reality TV Casting

it’s an IN for the color. gotta disagree on the hair and say a soft up-do could have made this silhouette work a lot better

  • Peeve

Gorgeous woman, but damn, get thee to a better stylist! She’s at the Costume Designer’s Guild Awards, for God’s sake–can’t one of them design something better than this schmatta?

    Edited: Fairly obvious, but OUT!

  • Joe Schmartin

FINALLY a makeup artist who did her face right! She looks better than I’ve ever seen her look! Hooray!!!

  • formerlyAnon

In. Like her makeup less than y’all, it looks hard and heavy on the blush/cheek contour. And I’d like to SEE the shoulders. Move your hair, missy. Not sure I think the dress is so very unflattering, I think it just emphasizes that she’s a curvy girl – and it behooves her to see as her hips/waist/bust ratio attractive if she doesn’t already do so.

  • Kaybegene

In! Color is great, and the shape is the body underneath. She looks wonderful!

  • murt

Wow – I absolutely hate the makeup – the foundation is the wrong colour, the blush is way too heavy, and her lipstick makes her look deathly….. I feel like she needs to fire her makeup artist.

I don’t mind the dress – colour is great on her. The silhouette does emphasize her hips, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

  • altissima

    In -she looks gorgeous.

  • Hard because I love her so much. I will have to say IN. But barely.

  • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

Out. Shape is bad for her and yeah, that sash is tackier than hell.

  • Jenna Marie

Out. Looking beautiful doesn’t equal being chic.
