Michael Kors Fall 2014 Collection

Posted on February 13, 2014

If it’s at all possible to produce a collection that’s breezy and cozy at the same time, then Michael Kors would be the man to ask to design it. Taking his inspiration from Big Sur and Northern California, he envisioned a world where peasant blouses, furs, and chunky knits all coexist in a sort of bohemian-chic nirvana. The result is earthy and sophisticated at the same time. A collection with a very grown-up feel to it.  We loved it.

I especially love the oversized knits and the coats. Not in love with the denim… skirt?

      • demidaemon

Yeah, that one was a big ol’ no. It’s awful.

      • jspark

I loved the knits too! But all I really saw from this collections was a nice belt. Seriously the whole thing looks like an add for that belt that is in EVERY outfit.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

He really is the antiBlonds, isn’t he.

I’m always a sucker for a bias-cut satin slip and I love the oversized knits, but the fringey bits, ripped tulle layers and boat-sized sandals let it down.

      • ballerinawithagun

Anti-Blonds, exactly. Beautiful but boring. Perfect for the Blake Livelys of the world.

        • Shawn EH

          She needs his help, though.

      • Tatiana Luján

The boat sandals are terrible and he seems to love them.

        • luluransom

An ode to Birkenstocks is taking the whole Northern CA vibe a giant step too far. Made me laugh out loud.

      • Anna

I also can’t sign off on the culottes.

    • http://myriameron.blogspot.com/ Heron

i LOVE this. And the model in the jean skirt and the crazy coat, second from the top, is so so so so beautiful.

      • Shawn EH

She looks like she’s sucking on a sweet tart! And above her, Karen Elson. I can almost forgive Kors his designer sweats for the men … they’re somehow more chic than the Todd Snyder ones.

    • mjude

he really never fails with his collection.

    • Charles

I want all of the men’s sweaters and coats.

      • conniemd

I want the bearded man in the coat. You can help by taking his coat and sweater.

        • Charles

Let me have the guy in the cable knit and beanie too and you have yourself a deal.

    • Shawn EH

Damn if he didn’t get all the best models, too! That’s not just a runway. That’s every good editorial from the past year. 5th up from the bottom, Carolyn Murphy, perfection!

      • Lisa_Co

I like that he uses women as models, not just 17 year old blank faced teenagers. And Carolyn Murphy is still a beautiful model (though not a great PR AllStars host).

        • Shawn EH

She’s better without all the talking, but wow, her pictures! And walking!

        • barbarienne

I’m so glad the BKs all know who people are and can confirm my perception. I was thinking, “Wait, did he actually get people whose ages start with digits higher than 1 to model his clothes? That’s awesome!”

Nothing against the teenagers, but it’s refreshing to see a bunch of grownups modeling the clothes that are intended for grownups.

    • appliquer

      Swallowed up by clothing.

    • hughman

I love the “vintage” feel to this… if it were vintage. It takes a certain eye and respect for fabric to pull off this look from pieces one finds in one’s shopping adventures. However this feels a bit cheat-y to me and not as interesting a story. The affectation of the Birkenstocks pushed it over into costume IMO.

      • MilaXX

Other than the slouchy boots I don’t like any of the footwear in this collection.

        • demidaemon

I pretty much hated it, and it had nothing to do with the design (although that was problematic). These shoes are so inappropriate for the clothes they are meant to go with!

    • Jessica Freeman

Knits for fall. Groundbreaking. In all honesty, I appreciate comfy clothes, but this is a touch frumpy for me.

    • Mom4nell

      Channeling the 1940’s?

    • Paula Pertile

The long brown sweater and scarf? Yes please.
And is that a cashmere coat in one of the little pics? Also, yes please!

    • hyperionic

      Meh. The furs are nice.

    • sagecreek

I hate his persona on PR so I wanted to hate this, but I love every single bit of it.

    • Danielle

That sheer cape thing is giving me LIFE

    • vickilu

DRINK every time you see a knotted belt.

I wish I was a person who could afford to live the MK lifestyle, it looks so enjoyable.

      • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I’ll take the DKNY lifestyle with the occasional DVF weekend.

    • Tatiana Luján

The first pieces look more dowdy and moldy than breezy and comfty.
But I pretty much love everything from the 18th look down.

    • KTBSN

      Denim skirt is back. ROCK!

      • MilaXX

No lie, I’ve been searching for a long denim skirt for 2 summers now. Maybe I’ll be able to find one this year.

        • tinyredlocks

I love long denim skirts! Have you tried Style J? They have a lot of them on their site.

          • MilaXX

I just wanted a plain 5 pocket medium or dark wash in plus size. I found everything but that. Miniskirt, bedazzled skirts, A-line skirts, prairie skirts, skirts in colors.

            • marlie

Same here. It’s usually the kind of thing that’s a Gap standard, but they haven’t even had a basic dark-wash denim skirt in a couple of seasons.

            • MilaXX

and when you want a very specific type it’s even harder. I found knee lengths and minis, but no long skirt

    • OhSayNow

Die sheers, die, and never come back. Love the stuff you can’t see through, though.

    • Megan Kennedy

I appreciate that a lot of these pieces would look hot on a woman of any age. And I covet that gray coat.
On the other hand, Birkenstocks need to Birkenstop.

    • Trickytrisha

Pretty drab for me. Beautifully made, but depressing, even.

    • Gatto Nero

The embroidered dove grey coat is pretty. And the Katharine Hepburnesque suit with fur collar that follows it.
Hate the sheers and wide cropped pants.

    • MilaXX

My own personal style is anything but earthy, but lord help me I love this collection. The slouchy boots, the sweater coats, the dresses & skirt with the button and/or flowers on them, even that silky gray dress; I want them all in my closet now!

    • boweryboy

Nothing says winter like a pair of Birkenstock sandals…

      • demidaemon

        Heh.

      • Jacob Bowen

Nothing says, “I go to Catholic High School and you don’t” to me more than Birkenstocks.

    • @Biting Panda

Parallel universe, Telluride living, rich bitch me, is living this story every day.

    • Kate4queen

Fur and feathers and fluffy things… I’m itching already. Some nice coats though.

    • msdamselfly

Overall very nice. Love the Birkies too. (Hint: I’m from No California)

    • http://vogueworthyy.wordpress.com/ Anastacia

Love love love the fur pieces and the oversized knits

    • http://vogueworthyy.wordpress.com/ Anastacia

love love love the fur pieces and oversized knits

    • Adrianna Grężak

Why is snakeskin print a thing again?

    • editrixie

I feel like I need to up the dosage of Zoloft.

    • Gloriana Reginata

A few of the pieces seem cosy, but the rest just feel like bleakchic – luxury materials to not be happy in.

      • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

        LOVE the term bleakchic.

    • kimmeister

Well, some of this certainly looks like the roadkill I see around here in Northern California.

      • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

        Nailed it.

    • Gatto Nero

He excoriates designers on PR for putting bare breasts under sheers but does it himself here (see thumbnails).

      • Shawn EH

Probably a TV vs. NYFW runway thing, though.

        • Gatto Nero

Yes, I know. He just pisses me off in general.

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

      Love. Timeless chic with tweaks…

    • deelup

It’s all beautiful. But I do wish there were at least a few pieces that pushed the envelope.

    • Imasewsure

Digging the frumpy cozy Kate Hepburn vibe of a lot of this… I agree it’s dull but I’m seeing a lot of this as practical and investment-worthy. The fringe skirt must die though!

    • AmeliaEve

This definitely nails the feeling of Big Sur, though. It’s totally normal there to wear Birkenstocks and a big wooly sweater. I’m sure I’ve seen that young man with the leather backpack and the beanie hanging out in Santa Cruz in that outfit.

    • Valdri8

I am knitting a big-ass sweater right now.

    • DeTrop

Love this. Happy to see lots of brown.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I love the knits. The furs and wool coats and trousers read more hippies at Martha’s Vineyard than Big Sur to me (I say as a lifelong Northern Californian and devotee of Big Sur.) All the black and gray and dirty-slush browns read as a New Yorker’s idea of Napa to me more than anything else. Which I guess it sort of is.

      • TFS8

“All the black and gray and dirty slush browns read as what a New Yorker would pack for Napa…”

Totally agree. We love color in Northern California!

    • marlie

I have a sudden urge to knit myself a big chunky sweater. I’m going to need to go shopping for yarn this weekend. And also, I want all of the coats. ALL of them. Otherwise, a lot of really chic dresses and skirts, that could look good on a variety of women (celebrity and non-celeb).

      • Qitkat

I love that oatmeal grey nubby one, in particular.

    • Qitkat

I guess you have to be rail thin to look so good in some of these oversized slouchy pieces.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i think it can go either way. thin and willowy you look like a wood nymph. with ample curves, it turns into earth goddess. a friend who had such curves and was in her late forties rocked this look, and she married a smoking hot twenty-five-year-old in big sur in the eighties. no lie.

    • Kirstin McAulay

But why… why the sheer and white panties…. WHY!?!?

    • Mimi

Why is Michael Kors always so boring? But some of those coats are just to die for, especially the one of Sasha Luss.

    • Anna

I love the whole outfit with the slouchy sweater and boots. It’s the perfect Sunday brunch look and allows for you to enjoy pains au chocolat, pancakes and hasbrowns and still look chic.

Suffice it to say I really dig the sweaters and coats, iffy on the rest.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i would totally wear those sweaters with the floor length skirts. so rural norcal…

    • demidaemon

Sweaters with tassel skirts—DO NOT GET. Also, #5’s pants look like sweatpants, which doesn’t seem right for NYFW. I love the overall comfy vibe, but this is definitely a collection that needs editing. Also: fall clothes with open toed shoes and sandals = WTF.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

it’s a big sur thing..free your feet or something. feel the earth beneath your toes, grounding etc.

        • demidaemon

OK? I still think it’s kind of dumb.

    • Synnamin

No on the tassels, but I will always love the Kors brand for the very, very good plus-size pieces they produce. I got a few as hand-me-downs and they’re the best dresses in my closet.

    • susan6

The styling….(cringe)….he was going for “windswept” and ended up at “homeless”.

    • CT14

The most I’ve liked Michael Kors in a long time.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

me too. except for the lack of color, he did hit the norcal feel pretty much on the head. or the nail or some such metaphor. anyways…

    • unbornfawn

      Love the menswear.

    • Monabel

Attractive, but too colorless. “Bleakchic” indeed.

    • LaSylphide

Comfortable and wearable and the coats are beautiful. But would it have killed him to use a little color?

    • quiltrx

Kors’ aesthetic is SO not my thing…BUT I see the very first piece of his (since I’ve been following fashion) that I really truly love. That long, grey, Miss-Marple-ish coat is absolutely gorgeous!

    • CKMia

I feel like I’ve seen this before.

    • Alyssa

Total coat & sweater porn! I’m stoked about all the oversized knit sweaters on the runway! I wear them anyway, so at least I’ll be in style!

    • SouthernGirlRena

If I stare at the pictures enough, I find individual pieces that I like but nothing makes my heart go pitter patter.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

all the sweaters, and especially the knit coat close to beginning, are FABULOUS! i would love to be sitting by the fire on the patio at nepenthe, eating a huge burger with french fries and ambrosia sauce, and drinking a local late harvest zinfandel, while watching the local witches doing a tribal snake dance. all the people from esalen go there on wednesday evenings for a red meat hit, as the groups don’t meet that night- hump day break. however, duchess, we do like more color in our boho regalia here in norcal. thanks for honoring us with your attention.

    • icm

love the menswear big grey cardigan with the grey sweater and grey slacks. Oh and I always wear my open toed sandals with 100 pounds of wool clothing .cmon!

    • MightyMarshal

Everything about this is incredible. I never would have guessed Michael, probably more like Ralph Lauren, but knowing it’s him I can see the easy, breezy California that he’s known for.

    • MissusBee

I’ll have any of the coats and a hot chocolate to go.

    • Big Bear

These look like the type of clothes worn by depressed people in movie montages .

    • A Shiny O’Connor

I totally read ’70s New York off this. So Kramer Vs Kramer.

      • carnush

        Totally.

        • Shawn EH

          Nice!

    • Diego!

I love it, but I especially love the male outfits. They are stunning and I want them! LOL xD I hope fashion would use fake fur instead :(

    • sienna elm

I am so incredibly enamoured with that men’s fading-cable-knit sweater! I’m a knitter and I’m trying to work out how I can recreate that…maybe as a toque? maybe as a purse? It’s just stunning. The rest of the collection is nice and fairly wearable as well.

    • carnush

I like this collection, really. It’s sophisticated and very wearable. But I’m just wondering how many non-model women look good in culottes?

    • RussellH88

I want #16. At least I think it’s 16, it’s the guy in the sweater and the comfy looking coat.

I would live in that outfit. I’d spend all day inside and playing on my 3DS in that outfit.

    • mcbishop

This is really beautiful, for sure, but no–I can’t sign off on the use of fur. It’s ghastly. That Kors seems to use more and more of it is kind of obscene to me.

      • AthenaJ

Completely agree with you on all counts… fur always looks best on the original (and alive) owner. It’s hard to appreciate the beauty of the collection when all I see are dead animals.
Btw in the next few years you will probably have another fellow Oregonian… My husband and I honeymooned there and LOVED it, we’re now talking about how soon we can sell our house here in PA and take up residence in Portland.

        • mcbishop

Ah!! Fantastic!! I am actually in Eugene, but Portland is a wonderful city. (And lots of great PR designers from there, as well!) You will love living there. It’s probably my favorite ‘big’-ish city. And it sits in the midst of such beautiful country. Welcome (whenever you get here!)

I am SO with you on the fur. It’s shocking to me to see it; I thought we were past that years ago!

    • yethica

Some of those classically shaped dresses are very killah.

    • MaggieMae

Nothing earth-shattering. My first reaction? These clothes are going to SELL like crazy.

    • snarkykitten

My mother would wear those oversized sweaters & birkenstocks in a heartbeat. I… don’t know if my mother is the audience Michael Kors is looking for…

    • bertkeeter

      FUR…NEVER!

    • crash1212

Fourth panel – I want it all. That long sweater/coat thingy is a thing of beauty. I love the color palette.

    • Clydette Wantland

Love, love all the women’s but where are the men going that requires a turtle neck sweater, long wool coat and SANDALS?

    • ovarB

Yes, I’ll take all of it!! Even the see through boobie tops!!

Quick question…Is it acceptable to wear fur again?? Or am I just being fooled by the fauxness of it all.

    • stubbornthoughts

Often times, I look at these runway pictures and think “ohhhh pretty!” and admire their beauty (or lack there of). But this one, I was downright impressed. This seems like a really well thought out collection, executed brilliantly. It looks luxurious and I can’t have any of it. This is the epitome of NYFW. Well done, Kors.

    • EEKstl

      Grey embroidered coat = obsession.

    • kategs

The greige suit with the wonderful full speckly fur collar is mine.

    • Blair Sylvester

That cable knit sweater and that gray cardigan need to be in my closet

    • RescueMe23

Why Michael Why? Why the fur?

    • save_the_hobbit

The chunky man sandals are making me want to throw up, but I LOVE the knits and the fringed clutches…and that black lace dress under the gray fur coat.

    • sleepycat

As someone from Northern California, I feel like this is a collection that would be an outsider’s view of Northern California. It is almost socal boho in cold weather. However, on the second viewing, there is a more NorCal feel. I also feel like once you upscale the look, it looks off. Either way, I want some of those cardigans. 7/10

    • Sunraya

So it’s cold enough that he shows the fur of dead animals, but not cold enough to wear hose?

    • carolie_king

Nice collection – just not buying the backstory. This doesn’t look NoCal. We walk our furs, we don’t wear them.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Is the man afraid of color?
