Michael B. Jordan in Vivienne Westwood at the 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival

Posted on February 05, 2014

Hunh. How about that. It finally happened.

Michael B. Jordan attends the 29th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival in a Vivienne Westwood suit.

Michael B. finally picked a look that we’re not really sure works for him at all. We think we might really love that jacket, but we also think we might really hate it worn as a suit jacket. Pair that multi-colored, wide-lapeled, one-button wonder with a pair of jeans or casual pants and we’d be applauding. Hell, we’d be checking the price to see if we could afford it. But with skinny suit pants? All those competing blues in one suit? Not to our liking. And his team occasionally makes some color choices we’d consider odd. This isn’t the first time we’ve questioned whether his shirt and tie really go with his suit. This was, we think, not the time to go for a very dark shirt and tie. There’s already too much contrast going on here.

All the credit in the world for wearing it, though. Not many malestars in his age range willing to wear a slightly unusual Vivienne Westwood creation.

Gotta disagree on this one. I think he looks terrific. Of course I have been a Westwood fiend since forever, so we must weigh that in this comment.

      • stubbornthoughts

Yep. Same here. I think he working the crap out of this, and it looks amazing on him.

      • d4divine

He looks great…he may be one of the very few that can pull off so much color…extra props for tailoring and properly hemmed pants.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Right? I was at a gallery opening last night and one young hipster turned my head because he had on PERFECTLY hemmed trousers. ( okay, so he was kind of a dish as well)

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Well, one must give credit to anyone who is wearing perfectly hemmed trousers, and if they are easy on the eyes, so much the better!

      • ballerinawithagun

Love the suit, great color, but a little too tight in the shoulders and upper arm.
        He is so adorable!

        • Trent

I feel like the entire suit is too tight. Look at how the fabric pulls across his (slender) thighs. Great color, but go up a size and tailor it to fit him!

      • homofascist

I love it as well. I guarantee if I saw someone wearing this IRL I’d stare. And try to figure out how to make it my own.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

I agree with you. I think the background is clashing with the suit, making the color look off.

    • deelup

Something about the fit of the jacket and pants don’t work for me. I think better tailoring and a white shirt would’ve made this sing.

    • Ms. Schmidt

Too tight in the thighs (is there such a thing?) and too short in the hem (for once).

    • Bozhi

Those pants do go with the jacket. Look at the jacket sleeves. Same color and fabric.

    • mmebam

I really hate white shirts, but I do think that a white shirt would’ve helped to ground this look somewhat. At the very least, find a different tie for that shirt.

    • Diego!

Why the sleeves and pants are made of a different fabric than the chest of the jacket? It looks like a superhero costume. It’s an OUT

    • Tatiana Luján

Had he worn a white shirt, I would call this a Werq. But with the purple shirt, the suit is too much.

    • marlie

First off, the shirt is ALL wrong. He needed a white shirt to even remotely make this suit work. I think the color of the body and the sleeves are too similar; I almost thought that they were different colors because of the lighting, or maybe they came from different dye lots. I don’t hate this on him, but the suit wasn’t deployed to its best advantage.

    • Jaeda Laurez

That shirt color confuses. It’s one step too far. But I love the blue, and his smile is gorgeous.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I like the suit, but not with that shirt and tie. I most love that little flash of flame-coloured lining up his sleeve which makes me think he should have gone for something in that family for his shirt. Anyway, he’s too adorable to be mean to.

      • gabbilevy

Picturing it, and it looks incredible. You available to be his stylist?

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

*imagines self touching Michael B Jordan*… sure. I could do that.

          • gabbilevy

That reminds me of when the Fug Girls interviewed the costume people of Sleepy Hollow and there’s one whose job is Touching Tom Mison. I would sing up for that job so. fast.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I started watched Sleepy Hollow after that interview because I wanted to see why Touching Tom Mison is desirable. It is desirable!

            • twigg

You don’t even have to pay me.

    • luluransom

I’d give it a thumbs up but the jacket seems way too tight in the upper arm/shoulder area. Lumpy and pulling and pretty sure he can’t raise his arms more than a few inches.

    • KinoEye

The color is divine on him, but I agree with the uncles on the shirt choice. Should’ve gone a bit lighter there. Still, he’s “cute as a bug’s ear,” as they say in my office.

    • Malibufire

The current fashion of skinny, short men’s suits is always a head-shaker. They look like hipster children.

    • jw_ny

Sleeves, lapels, and base of jacket are all different colors? Oh…hell no! Way too distracting, and looks like a mistake.

    • MilaXX

I usually hate too many competing blues, but for some reason I like this.

    • Courtenay P

like the suit, hate the shirt. and the boy is FOINE.

    • Kbear

The jacket is just too small. It needs to be wider in the shoulder so the bulk of his upper arms doesn’t stick out. It looks like his little brothers suit.

      • kimmeister

Yeah, it doesn’t even come close to fitting him in the shoulders.

    • MzzPants

The longer I look at this, the more I am bothered by the shoulder fit. They seem misshapen. He should keep this section of the blue family in his wheelhouse and try again.

    • Jessica Freeman

I really like that color blue on him. I may not love this look entirely, but I give him props for being tastefully interesting.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

The color goes a long way in making me overlook the detailing, because I love that shade of blue and I love him for choosing it for a red carpet.

    • SugarSnap108

I was all set to criticize, then he bit his bottom lip and flaunted his dimple. I am rendered powerless.

      • Jessica Freeman

Took a page right out of LL Cool J’s book.

    • In_Stitches

This was the time to go for tone on tone on tone on tone-do everything in shades of teal and it’d be a fun fashion statement. As is, it looks like he tried to be bold and then backed away. You can’t be non-commital with Westwood. Also, the jacket doesn’t fit.

    • Frank_821

First the fit is a bit off. Was this really different shades of blue? I thought they switched the grains up so it photgraphs as different colors since the sleeves match the pants. anyway the whole thing is off. It could be great. but yes his style team could have done a better job. A white shirt would have elevated the look

    • another_laura

The multiple not-coordinating blues turn me right off. Even this adorable guy can’t make it work for me. Deploying a black shirt with the blue is giving me a flashback to the late 70s and for me that’s not good.

      • filmcricket

Are you seeing a black shirt? It’s reading dark purple to me.

        • another_laura

Could be a monitor issue but I’m getting black.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

          Dark purple to me too.

    • Danielle

From the neck up I am filled with glee.

    • TRSTL

I LOVE that jacket and even like it with the pants (wish the fitted a little better though), hate the dark shirt and tie. I would totally wear the suit but I would put a pink shirt, open collar or more colorful prep school stripe tie. I like that kind of bold, the dark shirt/tie just is depressing to me.

    • quiltrx

I was trying to figure out if this was all a trick of the fabric grain, or if it’s actually different shades. If it’s the latter, it needed to be a bit more deliberate. I agree that the dark shirt isn’t the best choice, but I think white would have taken it into Temptations territory. Maybe a more medium-value shirt might have worked better…

    • Stares_At_Goats

It looks like the sleeve linings are pulled out of the jacket. Can’t get past it.

    • Leah Elzinga

open the jacket, crisp white shirt, no tie, brown belt… yes.

    • Constant Reader

Agreed on all points, plus I wish for a slightly longer hem and a less shiny shoe.

    • Tricia

The fit is definitely a little weird. But damn is he adorable- could look at him all day.

    • Imasewsure

I like it but with jeans, I would have loved it. Still I’m a big fangurl of his efforts

    • filmcricket

The fit is my main issue here. The hem is a skosh too short, the pants are a skosh too tight, and I don’t quite like what the shoulders are doing. But the suit *is* a suit – those pants match the jacket sleeves, so I’m okay with that.

    • smayer

The two different blacks in the shirt and tie aren’t working. I’d go with another tie, though I couldn’t even begin to tell you which color or pattern would work.

      • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

the shirt is purple, i think (at least on my monitor). not that it helps…

        • smayer

Ah, I see it now. Thanks!

    • Janet B

I think the shirt and tie are ruining a terrific suit.

      • Shawn EH

Love the jacket; needed to stick with the bold Westwood colors and rock a red or magenta shirt or something, though. Take it full on dandy.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Love the jacket, hate the pants, major respect for giving it a go.

    • Trickytrisha

Too many blues. Love him anyway.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I like this but it looks like his arms are too big for the jacket, and a better shirt color would be welcome (white maybe). (Still contemplating those big arms.)

    • xay

Doesn’t work for me. It’s all going to have to come off.

    • ShaoLinKitten

I think he looks fine. I could be better with a light blue shirt. Don’t mind the pants, though. I still think he looks better than 99% of the male stars out there.

    • LeelaST

Don’t mind the dark shirt/tie. I never know if it’s my monitor or camera angle but pants/skirts often look a different color from jackets on the RCs. This one actually matches the sleeves and I like that boldness! (Blue background is not helping though.)

    • Bill Craven

Don’t like how the pockets emphasize the hips, in a feminine way to my eye. Also, the shirt doesn’t work for me; a white shirt with a contrasting jewel-tone tie? I dunno. The color-blocking drives me a little nuts in this one.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

I love the lining of the jacket (what little we can see peeking through the sleeve.) I think he looks pretty fabulous.

    • luludexter

pants are too tight, shirt is wrong color, but this blue is a wonderful color on him and really complements his skin tone, so that’s puts it over for me.

    • Leslie Streeter

Very “Five Heartbeats.” I approve. A heart is a house of love (and he’s a house of fine….)

    • Jacob Bowen

I wish I had the ability to rock this jacket, but I would look ridiculous. The outfit is a bit try hard, but he is just so damn CUTE!

      • demidaemon

I don’t know. I don’t think try hard exists for men. At least not with the wearing of a suit.

    • msdamselfly

      I think he looks fabulous

    • formerlyAnon

I want to like it but it continues to look “off.” I don’t know if a shirt & tie in different (no earthly idea which, maybe pick up the blues in a tie?) colors would smooth things over for me.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I love this. I find that, for my eyes, the pants matching the sleeves helps balance the look. And once again, a suit I’d love to wear for work, crazy colors and all.

    • demidaemon

I’m not loving the cut of those pants with those shoes, I think I would be okay with the jacket if he hadn’t buttoned it, but, as is, the one button draws attention to all sorts of design and styling issues. He’s still incredibly handsome and cute, though.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

And even if it’s not my fave look of his, you gotta’ admit that boy is seriously high-level for his age. That whole ensemble would look plain dumb on someone less classy.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m giving him credit for wearing Westwood, especially that jacket-love the color.

    • livesarah

I don’t mind the competing blues, I think he works it. For me, there is something off with the fit of the sleeves, and the skinny cut of the pants isn’t flattering.

    • Daktari100

He’s still cute as a button from the neck up. A flash of that smile is all it takes to make you forget what’s going on with the suit.
