Melissa McCarthy at the AARP “Movies for Grownups” Awards

Posted on February 12, 2014

What do we think of this, kittens?

Melissa McCarthy attends the AARP “Movies for Grownups” Awards in Beverly Hills, California.

We’ll tell you what: we’re digging it, for the most part. It’s not perfect, but it’s another step in the right direction for her. It’s got a little bit of shape to it and it doesn’t cover her from neck to feet. Plus the color-blocking gives it a little style. We’re not sure about the white yoke, though. And while we think she should pick focus-pulling shoes when she can, these strappy things don’t actually look all that fabulous to us. Still, she looks really pleased with herself, and it’s a look that says “Look at me,” which is pretty much what red carpet looks are supposed to say. This is an “Attagirl,” as far as we’re concerned.

That’s the best hair I’ve ever seen on her.

    • cocohall

Right, not the usual back combed bouffant thing that makes her look like she came to the event in a convertible. She looks comfortable and happy. Nicely done, Melissa!

    • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

And that face is gorgeous. Overall very well done head.

      • Kent Roby

Someone just said “well done head”; my day is already complete! Innuendo aside, I completely agree!

  • Flavia Pantoja

It’s an OK dress, but the shoes are really not working for me. Nice hair and makeup though (just a tiny little bit too much pink on the cheeks?)

    • demidaemon

Yeah, I think they are a bit too heavy for this look. She needed something sleeker with fewer straps and geegaws.

  • Aidan B

Attagirl, indeed. Overall this works much better for her than those blousey concoctions that are usually her standard.

  • MW

This is fun, it’s great to see her in something not overtly mature and she’s clearly enjoying it as well. Great hair.

  • PastryGoddess

I’m loving the direction her hair is taking lately. Soft, bouncy, and shiny. So very cute

I like the shoes. I think she can handle them with the outfit.

  • @Biting Panda

Whew. I was worried it was a trick question. This is giving me the good feelings, and I’ll allow the shoes.

    • Jacob Bowen

That is my EXACT thought! Even though the shoes are semi-tragic I think that whole face makes up for it!

  • AzSportsGirl

Love it. That smile in the first photo let’s me see her relationship to Jenny McCarthy.

    • sagecreek

Wait, she’s related to the crazy anti-vax lady? That makes me sad.

      • @Biting Panda

Cousins. And let me tell you, I feel for her. I have a cousin I love to pieces, but some of the ridiculous, close minded, shit that she believes is enough to make me want to shake her. There are just things we can’t discuss. And there are just times all I can do is shake my head.

        • sagecreek

Yep. I have a cousin who (seriously) is in the Klan. We don’t associate, but yep, I do get that you cannot choose your relations.

          • sojourneryouth

HOLY CRAP! I have some awful extended family members, but Klan members? Damn!

          • KinoEye

Dang! That beats my thieving, gold-digging, social-climbing aunt by a mile. I’ve got casual racism all over the extended family, but they haven’t taken the next step into Klanhood. Wow.

        • demidaemon

I have a lot of relatives like that. I do not associate with them for the most part, except at family reunions and when they show up out of the blue. Interestingly enough, my grandfather is a conundrum of 50s views on race but somewhat liberal politics.

        • formerlyAnon

People. I think I was given relatives with appalling opinions in order to teach me that people are endlessly complex. Some of my most loving and generous and unselfishly loyal relatives – on a person-to-person level – are scary when you hear their generalized opinions about life, politics and humanity as a whole.

  • Imasewsure

I really like the shoes but not with this. Dress is pretty but that’s a tough shape to pull off. Think I’d prefer it if it was shaped a little closer to the body on the skirt but I like the top. She looks great over all and hopefully will keep going in these style directions. Attagirl for sure!

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

The sleeves should have been to the wrist. Not the first time I’ve said this about one of her outfits.

      • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com Kristel

I’m a plus-sized gal and I don’t know what it is about plus clothing, but I swear a good 90+% of the plus tops out there have short or 3/4 length sleeves. It drives me up the wall because when I buy a sweater? I WANT IT TO COVER MY FRIGGING WRISTS. Fat people get cold too, designers!

        • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

I like 3/4 length sleeves for the summer so that my fat upper arms don’t show, but this dress should definitely have had long, tapering sleeves.

        • DinaSews

That is my biggest complaint about plus size clothing!! The second is the band or elastic that they have been putting around the bottom of shirts. It makes me look pregnant or rides up over my hips. Makes you wonder who is designing for plus size women.

          • formerlyAnon

I’ve worn (or tried on) that clothes with that band/elastic as a size 8 and as a plus size – and it looks dreadful across the board. The only people who get away with it are the hipless and model thin, IMO.

        • editrixie

I have super long arms, and broad shoulders, and am in between sizing areas — sometimes I can do an XL or 14/16, but different labels I have to go the plus size department to fit my bust. And even the “long sleeve” tops are still more like bracelet length. I guess they think if you’re wide, you can’t be long too. It makes me friggin’ nuts. There’s nothing like wearing something that looks like the high-water version of a top.

  • Sarah

I like the shoes, esp because her toes are nowhere near the edge of them, and they appear to fit. The dress I’m on the fence about. I feel it is alternately flattering and kicky vs. rugby time. Maybe if the white was teal, or rose, or not-white. Her hair and face look happy and lovely.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, I like the teal idea. I don’t care for the stripe down each side. Love the shoes.

  • deelup

She looks happy and pretty and that makes me happy. The shoes look would be awesome if the bottom two straps were of the same material as the top one, I think.

  • MK03

I dunno, I think it blends into the step-and-repeat too much.

  • Zeee

    We like it.

  • hughman

She looks happy and sassy and not in that “lower middle class, I’m a ball buster” way she does in her movies.

    • Trent

Ditto for her SNL hosting gigs. Would it have killed Lorne Michaels and the writers to let her do ONE sketch last month in which she looked sexy, sassy and attractive? Instead they stuck her in one hiddy getup after another, as if funny big girl = unattractive and loud. At least Aidy Bryant gets to be cute sometimes…

      • The Counselor

So true! Finding variations on “buffoon” has been a theme across her hosting gigs. Not that it’s never funny, but the one-notedness of it makes me uncomfortable.

      • Valdri8

I totally agree. The angry-coach-lesbian character was so funny the first time around, but it is time to put it to rest. She should have been in a skit where she was playing a sex-pot goddess, or at least been attractive.

As for the outfit…love the dress, hair and make-up, but she should never wear shoes that cut her off at the ankle like that. It makes her legs look too stubby.

      • KinoEye

I long for the day where actresses like Melissa are cast as love interests in romantic comedies, as femme fatales, as smart, quirky girls in indie flicks. Big and sexy are not mutually exclusive concepts. There are millions of men (and women) who are drawn to women like her in every day life — why not on screen? Bah.

    • DinaSews

I couldn’t agree more. After Bridesmaids, she seemed to fall into that role on everything. I loved Mike and Molly but she has converted her wit into physical ‘fat’ comedy.

  • PeaceBang

The dress would have worked better with a royal blue or emerald green instead of the white contrast. Still, cute! The shoes aren’t great but they’re not atrocious.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love her makeup – really emphasizes her gorgeous eyes.

    • Alyssa

Totally agree…this may be a personal best on makeup for her!

  • joything

She looks like she feels good and feels good about herself, which is a Win in my book.

  • MilaXX

I LOVE IT! Her face looks good, hair isn’t doing crazy things and I FLOVE that dress on her. Everything looks modern, polished and well balanced.

  • Denise Alden

I really like this. I think this comes close to a personal best for her, too. Does anyone know the dress designer? It looks very similar to a Lafayette 148 New York dress from last spring.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Her. Head. Is. Fabulous. Seriously the best her hair and makeup have ever looked. I’m not in love with the dress, but it’s not terrible, like the shoes.

  • siriuslover

She does look good. I don’t care for the three quarter sleeves though. She seems choppy with that AND the color blocking. But still quite good.

    • Tracy_Flick

I agree, those sleeves make it look like part of the dress shrunk. Other than that, I like it. The shoes aren’t making me gasp and run for my wallet, but I don’t hate them (coulda been a lot worse).

  • ShaoLinKitten

I like it. The shoes have the right idea, but they look kinda Payless to my eyes. The dress is great and hair and make up look good. Thumbs up.

  • luludexter

I love this on her. I would have liked a darker lip, though, a red lip looks great with black and white. I agree about the shoes but you can’t have everything.

  • LaSylphide

She has such beautiful skin and eyes, I don’t really pay much attention to anything else.

  • Glam Dixie

Makeup and hair are gorgeous, dress is good, shoes are kinda fug, so I guess she starts out at the top with a woohoo and ends up at the feet with a doh!

  • Judy_S

At first I didn’t like it (maybe because I tried on a similar style and didn’t like it on myself?) but on second thoughts she looks awfully good. I think the shoes are right with the dress–they bring it up a notch.

  • Joanna

I really like it. Her face is outstanding. I think it’s a pretty good shape for her – it doesn’t look like it’s just a burlap sack cinched at the waist (which is what past stylists have done to her, and they should be hanged for it!)

  • teensmom99

She looks good and most remarkably her shoes fit. I think the yoke is slimming and flattering. I’m happy just looking at her.

  • surfergirl70

She looks good, and she looks like she feels good, so it’s a win in my book.

  • Janet B

Look at her looking happy in an attention getting dress!
The sleeve length is awkward, but otherwise I like it.

  • Kimmu

The dress needs to be tighter and more form fitting on the bottom, and then this look would be lovely. Though it is a step in the right direction. She always dresses like she’s apologizing for her size, when she should be telling everyone to fuck off, she looks fabulous.

  • Cele Deemer

She does look happy. And that makes this a Win for me.

  • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

She is so pretty, and this dress looks terrific on her. I’m not in love with the shoes, but I keep thinking of the second time she hosted SNL and did that funny bit in the monologue where she tottles around on high heels. I bet these are comfy, so I’ll give her a pass. Go, Melissa!

  • jen

She looks great! Her stylist is actually putting her into real clothes instead of sacks!

  • Victoria Anzalone

Pretty sure that’s a Sephora uniform.

  • Lori

I join you wishing that she had picked a different shoe, but otherwise I think it’s pretty good and that fact that she looks so happy in it makes that a win.

  • BobStPaul

Like it – a lot. Not crazy about the shoes but otherwise it’s a big step up from her usual.

  • sagecreek

I think it looks great. I still wish she’d just call up Tadashi Shoji and turn herself over to him, but this is SO MUCH BETTER than what she’s been doing. And her hair and makeup are resplendent.

  • Ben Perry

This is one of her better looks. The color blocking makes her feel fresh and young looking. What I like the most is she likes the way she looks. In some of the dresses she wears it looks like she hates herself for putting it on.

  • Julie Parr

    Very cute. She looks great.

  • Betsy

I like the whole thing. She really is quite pretty, isn’t she?

  • Ashleigh

AGREED! The fabric feels heavy to me (in photos). And the shoes don’t help. Glad for a little skin – I say more… especially arms..and maybe some cleavage for godssake!

  • brown-eyed girl

I like her so much and keep hoping she’ll nail it consistently. This is the best look for her that I’ve seen.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I think it’s snappy and she looks cute. The hair is great, too.

  • http://vispreeve.tumblr.com/ Den Milano

Love her and I love this!

  • kimmeister

I have those exact shoes, and I got them 70% clearance at Target. If she is wearing actual Target shoes to this event, I kind of love her for that.

  • Pennymac

She looks good and looks like she feels good. I like this.

  • Sofia Bentivoglio

head to toe perfect. i especially like these shoes on her and her sexy pedi. well done, darling!

  • marlie

I love this for her. The dress fits her nicely, and the colorblocking accentuates her curves in a good way. Her hair and makeup look good, and I think the shoes work, because they add some balance to the overall look.

  • Anna

Attagirl indeed, she looks so pretty here. I actually like the shoes and appreciate the lack of toes sliding forward. Ring is awesome, she looks good and she knows it!
I think I’m going to request that colour for my next pedicure.

  • jilly_d

Nice dress, great head. Well played.

  • AmeliaEve

Most important to me is that she looks her age. Those big drapey-stretchy things always make her look way too old, especially with the big stiff hair. At the same time, this is not too tight or revealing. It’s simple, bold, and body conscious but still ladylike. It’s not ideal, but it really suits her.

  • Miss_Led

    Be me!

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the dress, but I think a pop of color in the shoes would have been nicer. Anyway, great look, the hair and makeup are very good.

  • alyce1213

Aaah. So much better! I like the strong sandal with this, keeps it modern and gives it a little edge.

  • AnnaleighBelle

What if the white were a color?

  • filmcricket

I would keep the yoke and dispense with the stripe down the side, actually, as it reads a bit “track suit” to me. But it’s a cute dress, and she looks radiant.

  • Haley Buchanan

I think she looks fantastic! The color blocking adds visual interest, is flattering, and gives some character to the look. Great hair and makeup, cute shoes, and a killer attitude. Love her!

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I have to give her a “thumbs up” for this. Nice going!

  • quiltrx

Cute dress, and hair and makeup look great. I’m not wild about the shoes, but overall an attagirl for sure!

  • amanda lynn

    She looks wonderful.

  • Charles

I like the idea of the colour blocking and the idea of the white lines going down the side but I wonder if they could have been placed better to give her shape rather than just seeing it when she raises her arms or is pictured from the side. Also, the white on top without any other visible white the rest of the way down is veering into swinging mod nun.

  • Spoilers!

I kind of want my hair to look like that.

The dress is cute. Not the greatest every, but definitely cute.

  • Shawn EH

Never seen her so pulled together. It’s like one of those slimming dresses, only without trying to hard in that direction and just settling for color blocking. Who knew she was a mod?

  • Sheila Bates

I think she looks great! Woo hoo, Melissa!!!

  • LJCdoc

She looks great, except for the shoes, which are not cute at all.

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

    she looks fresh and pretty,

  • Claudia

I like the dress, but not the shoes. But she does look radiant and happy in herself, which is usually half the battle!

  • Guest

I like it! Also her hair looks fab, none of that weird pouffiness she’s done in the past. Very cute!

  • Stefanie Mackenziews

    Much better.

  • Jessica Freeman

I would agree this is not the best, but it one of her personal bests. Definitely needed a sleeker shoe choice.

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

It’s not perfect but it’s well structured, and she doesn’t do structured at all. So overall – great.

  • Little_Olive

Best hair and makeup I’ve seen on her, by far.

  • mjude

    I think she looks great.

  • Vickiefantastico

I think she looks drop-dead gorgeous! Attagirl indeed!

  • carnush

I love this. Really pretty hair and makeup too.

  • jw_ny

Melissa looks great. I like the white at the upper portion…brings the eye/focus up to her pretty face. Shoes are on the clunky side, but I don’t think this look calls for a delicate shoe, so it’s ok….like the touch of sparkle down there.

  • MaggieMae

Agreed. Diggin’ it. She looks youthful, pretty. Love the clunkier shoe for proportional balance. Her team is definitely on track. I’m looking forward to more!

  • KinoEye

I was thinking she looked happy and comfortable, and her hair and makeup look just perfect. HATE the shoes and don’t think they do anything for her; like the color blocking, but wishing it was just a hair more structured towards the bottom. Beautiful lady.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

White next to the face isn’t the best choice for most people..I’d have liked another color with the black, but she looks great. She (and team) seem to be getting the hang of this whole thing this year.

  • Kristobel

I love it. But then, I am a whore for a black and white combo. And color-blocking.

  • Sally Spannagle

The hair and makeup suit her so well here. I like the color blocking — stylish but simple. Again, I wish she would have some ruching to the waist or tighter sleeves.

  • snarkykitten

She looks better that Winona, that’s for sure!

  • BEARAYMOND

I love those earrings! And that cocktail ring. Girl has the frame to carry some bling!

  • lalahartma

    Yup, she looks great!

  • acevedob

    Perfect.

  • luluransom

I like the color blocking at the neck. Draws attention to her fabulous face and headsuit.

  • formerlyAnon

Her hair is fabulous. The dress is competent, not exciting. The shoes good, nothing special. All told, I’d rather a great head and good body than the other way around.

  • RussellH88

I’m glad she’s not doing that weird pompadour thing, I always thought that was a horrible choice for her.

I do like this, I’m a sucker for graphic black and white outfits.

  • stubbornthoughts

    I love it!!!

  • Kate4queen

That white background isn’t helping, but overall I like it. :)

  • melanie0866

We think it’s pretty great and we want the shoes, because they are cute and look like they might even be comfortable.

  • gsk241

I love it. Very mod. And as a fellow fatty, I’ll dub this a “Be Me” moment for Ms. McCarthy!

  • Gatto Nero

Graphic, bold, simple, modern — all things she usually avoids. This works for her.

  • Jessica Goldstein

I like the white yoke, the shoes, and the shape. Really, the only adjustment I’d make is to lop a tiny bit off the hem. I think she could have gone a little shorter.

  • Dan_In_NYC

Yes, Attagirl. Her stylist could really work on picking better shoes for her. Her’s are often pretty fug.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    Everything here is working.

  • Suse

I wish the white parts were a nice jewel tone of some sort ~ sapphire or emerald would look great.

  • Daktari100

    She looks fab.

  • editrixie

I like the white yoke because it pulls your attention up to her lovely face, away from bosoms and middle. And as someone with really broad shoulders, I like that the yoke slopes down the shoulders, making them seem less wide, which is a problem with some of her dresses. I think this is a really great look for her!

    • J. Preposterice

and I think it’s a cream, not bright white, and just sets off her hair and skin so nicely.

  • patticake1601

As a heavy chick myself, we cant wear shoes that have straps at our ankles. It makes us look even thicker and shorter. She should stick to shoes that shoe the entire top of her foot so it elongates her legs.

  • Adriana_Paula

    Love it, top to toe.

  • Akemi

I like it a lot. I think she looks great, though I am not loving the shoes.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Super, super cute. I love that she is wearing a dress style that’s usually considered for skinny girls only, and she is rocking the hell out of it.
I think she also went the correct direction with bold accessories and shoes–love the direction Lady is going with this.
