Lupita Nyong’o in Lanvin at the “Non-Stop” LA Premiere

Posted on February 25, 2014

Miss Lupita is clearly feeling very Bronze Age at the moment. You won’t hear us complaining.

Lupita Nyong’o attends the premiere of “Non-Stop” at Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles, California in a Lanvin dress paired with a Rauwolf clutch, a Solange Azagury-Partridge ring, Janis Savitt earrings, and Sergio Rossi pumps.

Lanvin Fall 2014 Collection

Thank God she got to this dress before Julianne Moore did; that’s all we’re saying. Miss J loves herself some Lanvin, but never seems capable of working it. And we’re pretty sure we’d dislike this dress on almost anyone else, really, but she’s coming close to making it work. It loses us with the visible zipper, though. That’s just not elegant or pretty. Not even Miss Lupita can overcome that.

The shoes are just okay. She likes a high-vamp pointy-toed pump a little too much, we think. Shoes with different shapes than this have done a better job for her.

The hair and face, as usual, are everything.

Now I’m picturing Julianne Moore in that dress and laughing hysterically.

    • makeityourself

I’m kinda scared. Just the thought of her hair matching the dress is making me gag a little.

I know she and Tom Ford are dear friends. Could he not just commandeer her wardrobe choices for the next several years? Does he ever text her and say GTNYD?

  • mkt-rex

She’s going through her bronze/gold phase to get ready for holding that golden oscar statue…

    • Introspective

    • I hope you’re right, but this does sort of feel like she’s burning off some B dresses before the big night. Nothing wrong with that, but this isn’t on the same level as some of her more gasp-inducing recent successes.

  • Anna

Lupita, my love, I adore caramel hershey’s kisses as much as the next gal, but not the wrapper as a dress with a huge side zipper.

    I DO love your hair.

    • Mm. Caramel Hershey’s kisses are awesome. Unfortunately, it was reminding me of a baked potato at a buffet. Lupita makes a gorgeous baked potato, but it’s still a baked potato dress.

  • gracedarling

Oh wow, did she take my note from the last post re: blue eyeliner? I’m flattered!

*inflates with sense of deluded self-importance*

  • Not just a horrible visible zip, a double-ended horrible visible zip. I don’t think the runway version had that detail, and it was better for it.

    • lundibleu

Yup, the runway version seems to have the zip more covered. I don’t get why you’d want such an ugly zip on show. URGH.

      • RectPropagation

I don’t think it’s a deliberate change, I think it’s just that this kind of detail always ends up failing. Any kind of fabric detail that’s supposed to stand up on its own always fails to do so in real life. It flops, sags, or goes off to the side and it’s always whichever side will make the dress look worse. The model only had to wear it for the few minutes it took to walk the runway but Lupita had to sit in a vehicle.

    • Introspective

Agree that I liked the runway version way better. Less fussy and the exposed zip of project runway nightmares is absent. But still I see Lupita and am unable to see anything except fierce!

    • MK03

It seriously looks like someone just took a two-way zipper out of the package and stapled it to the front of the dress. What in the actual fuck??

    • demidaemon

I read that first sentence with a much dirtier connotation. It would have been a great improvement upon this dress.

    • OneEleven

I think she has in on upside-down compared to the runway version. Hence the zipper now being in the front. Look how the pleats are straight on the bottom on the runway, but the straight side is on the top on Lupita. Or, I have too much time on my hands.

  • PastryGoddess

One of my fave color combos is Bronze and blue

  • Ashleigh

whole thing needs to be rotated about 15 degrees so that zipper runs more along her side than down her thigh…

    • Sara__B

Yes! I want to reach in there and give the dress a twist to the side. Or better yet, replace that ugly zipper with a plain old seam.

  • kimmeister

Why does the model not have a big honking zipper, yet she’s wearing one that does? I’m not digging that unfinished fabric branching out on either side of it, it’s making me think of a sea horse mane (or whatever you call it).

I like the eye makeup, but not with those lips. It’s too much muchness.

  • Sarah

Well, that’s the proof – I truly think that dress is hiddy, but not on Miss Lupita. Yeah, bad zip and all – but still. She’s so making it work like no one else could.

  • nannypoo

I love everything about this. The makeup is gorgeous.

  • Danielle

    THE EYE MAKEUP *heavy breathing*

  • JauntyJohn

Also, I’m afraid I don’t think that length is very good for Lupita. Hem on the model hits above the knee, not at it. I don’t like the proportion on Lupita at all with this at the knee.

    • jen_vasm

I agree. Maybe a 2-3 inches shorter for this dress. Some women do better with more of the knee exposed. I think that might be Lupita.

  • livesarah

That dress is all kinds of wrong but again she somehow pulls it off. Hate the lipstick this time, though.

  • Evan

I much prefer this hair and makeup to what she had the other day.

  • She has raised the bar so high that I’m actually starting to worry about her Oscar ensemble.

  • Beto

So far is the only ensemble I totally dislike in her. I’m pretty sure that zipper destroys EVERYTHING.

    • demidaemon

Same here. I has a sad.

  • SugarSnap108

That dress is awful — though the version on the model, without the heinous visible zipper, is better. The shoes are just OK.

But yeah, her face and hair are everything. They have the power to overcome the most hiddy forces of fashion.

  • MaggieMae

Oh dear. I don’t care for this, or yesterday’s. Maybe I like her in less edgy, more classically pretty attire?

Now I’m overly concerned she is going to shoot for something risky and out there for the Oscars.

  • MilaXX

I like the look and I don’t mind the shoe. Still it’s an improvement over the awkward shoes she used to wear.

  • E. D.

As usual, don’t love the shoes. Not sure why I don’t like the lip color – probably too peach/yellow for the dress.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I like her more when she’s trying to pull off dresses like this one or working some prints. That zipper is awful, but I love her for trying it out.

  • pattyw

Are there any African-American women scrolling through the comments who can explain how Lupita gets so much height out of what appears to be very little hair? Just curious. I think it’s astounding/fantastic how much she’s been able to switch up her hair style without resorting to straightening, wigs or extensions.

    • Gatto Nero

I’m not sure about the lack of “extensions.” I think there’s some augmentation going on for many of her hair looks.

    • tinyredlocks

Good question…Natural African-American hair (not chemically altered) can shrink by 50% or more. So, the TWA she’s been sporting will be much longer when blown out with a blow dryer or hit with a flat iron. There are no wigs or extensions with her, but a little heat will go a long way in switching up her/our styles.

    • marlie

Her natural cut is a rather tight ‘fro, so I’m pretty sure she’s been using hairpieces/extensions. But they’re really well done, and they don’t look fake AT ALL.

    • KendraMR

She’s definitely using hair extensions, and her hair stylist is doing a wonderful job blending her real hair with weave.

  • appliquer

The model’s version is so much better. Why did they ruin the dress with that zipper?

  • Meg0GayGuys6

I’m afraid there might be some Lupita-blindness. Is it just me or is not a disaster? I think this is kind of a mess all around.

I do give her kudos on the hair- mine is past my shoulders and I don’t show as much variety as she has on this poledance.

    • @Biting Panda

I’m with you. I’m just as against this situation as I was yesterday’s. I am not feeling good about what could be coming Sunday.

      • demidaemon

Maybe she’s throwing out the whack dresses to troll us before the big day where she blows everyone’s socks off. (Although, I loved the WERQ dress from Monday but am in total agreement about this one.)

    • Jessica Freeman

Would agree. Hate this one full stop, just as the one from the other day.

    • Jennifer Schiller

Nope. Possibly my least favorite outfit of hers. It looks like a heavy metal sack. I can get on board with the eyeshadow, and the color combo of gold and bronze, but the two different metallics and the metallic in the eye liner make it all look messy. Love her; hate this.

  • Verascity

On her, I can even take the zipper. I gay-gasped when I saw this.

  • Adrianna Grężak

Can’t say I can get on board with this – the dress mainly isn’t working for me because it’s not fitted the way it is on the model. Her style team should have known that that fabric would not look good in flash photography. I think this dress should be left on the runway and MAYBE editorials.

    • conniemd

The model’s dress does not show the exposed zipper at all and seems to put the zipper/frippery at the side. It looks so much better.

  • cocohall

There is something about this makeup that makes me think she could/should play Michelle Obama. Normally Lupita looks so much the fresh-faced ingenue. Here she looks totally capable of giving some Fierce Michelle Face: Barack, put down that damn phone and stop taking selfies with that bitch from Europe.

  • msdamselfly

Not feeling any of this. Head to toe not at her best.

  • Lori

Man, I do not like that dress at all. She’s probably coming as close to making it work as possible, but it’s still ugly. She deserves so much better than OTT gift wrap with a visible zipper.

  • Funkykatt

She looks fab all the time, I am thinking you two must be her stylists.

    • sagecreek

If I EVER get rich and famous (which, at this juncture, seems unlikely), my FIRST call will be to the unks. Come dress me and I’ll throw merry bushels of cash all over you!

  • Alfred Cox

Gorgeous. Flawless. That dress is all kinds of weird, but Lupita, as usual, makes it come alive. Who else could rock this the fuck out besides her? No one.
    *Sigh* Shes a goddess.

  • marlie

I love her hair (LOOOOVE), and her eyes look great, but I don’t like her lip color. And I really don’t like the dress. It says something about her and her ability to pull this off, but I still don’t particularly like it. The shoes are fine, but unimaginative.

    • AnneElliot

Her shoes are nearly always a scroll-down disappointment. I hate the dress but those shoes are especially disappointing.

  • bunnydiet

She is stunning. She is wearing clothes no one else can and it will be her mark in fashion.

  • Bozhi

  • fringebenefit

No can do. This is the first thing she’s worn that I’m not on board with…that zipper is just awful.

  • SRQkitten

I really the uncles need to start a regular daily feature that goes beyond awards season – the “Lupita look of the day.”

Having said that, this dress just completely reinforces every nasty thought I ever had about exposed zippers. That dress could have been so much more fabulous with Lupita in it if it didn’t have that ugly ass zipper.

  • boweryboy

I love how she rocks so many hairstyles with such little hair.

I think she goes for a high vamp pointy toed shoe to harken back to old Hollywood glamour.

    It’s unfortunate about the zipper.

  • luluransom

Agree about the shoes. She often defaults to that shape and I hate to say it, but they kinda stumpify her. Not that her perfection is diminished any in my eyes. Still, can we try something in a high-heeled sandal??

  • Danielle West

Her makeup is TO DIE FOR.

  • Valdri8

    Oy with the zipper

  • MzzPants

    Love her hair shape.

  • CO Gal

If I had her shoulders and collarbones, I would never wear sleeves.

  • NinjaCate

HER HAIR!!!!!!! I need her hairstylist to reveal her secrets for getting that much versatility out of a TWA immediately!

  • Granny panties

I’m growing out a pixie cut, mine is not even to my chin. I love to see all the different cool styles she wears with her cropped cut. Hmmmher dress love the colour,

  • SewingSiren

Beautiful dress beautiful face, but what in the devil is up with that zipper? Is it stapled on?

  • Kent Roby

That exposed zipper completely ruins that dress, so disappointing, so “Bad Project Runway”

  • quiltrx

Man, that color is FLO…For Lupita Only!

  • Cecilia Lin

whenever i see lupita with a new hairstyle i ask myself where did i go wrong with my short hair. her hair is giving me LIFE.

  • demidaemon

I think this is the first look of hers that I actively despised. Perhaps, though, she decided to take one for the team and snag this dress away from Miss Moore, thus saving millions of eyes from true capital F FUG. I also see that her shoe problems have returned with a vengeance.

    • altissima

Me too. The dress looks a bit sloppy on her compared to the model, and that hem length ain’t at all flattering.

  • kerryev

    Love the pointy hair!

  • theblondette

Not a fan. She looks beautiful, of course, but that’s a no-brainer. This is a very awkward dress. Like turkey foil got dressed up for the holidays.

  • decormaven

Great color on her; the only niggle is the exposed zipper. She has done an enormous amount of PR heading towards Sunday; if her media people are smart, they will build in some quiet moments for her to be well-rested before the RC battleground. Soothing eye treatments are called for- her eyes look tired.

  • Little_Olive

I can’t believe it! My first Lupita dislike— the dress sits weird on her body, but I guess I could get past that were it not for the payless shoes.

  • Jacob Bowen

I LOVE this color on her and I LOVE how the fabric looks up close, but not so much from farther away. And I would like whoever thought that zipper was fabulous while they were sewing it in to write Ms. Lupita an apology letter.

  • jw_ny

gotta agree with many of the others that the exposed zipper really ruins the look; much nicer on the model…covered with the flaps. Otherwise, it’s an interesting dress and the color and shape are good for her….I like it much more than the orange/copper one she wore the other day. Not liking that shade of lipstick on her at all though…not flattering and distracts from her beauty. Her tendency to match everything…shoes, dress, lipstick, etc., as of late has got to stop.

  • Alyssa

I wish the dress was the same as the models…aka, no visible zipper!!! Gorgeous hair and makeup, as usual.

  • kt

That orangey-brass is doing weird things next to her skin ( can we just pause and appreciate/be bitterly jealous of, her god given gifts for a second?) I am LOVING the way the blue liner pops, if she wanted to do metallic, a platinum or silver would be smashing.

  • Shawn EH

That is one visual zipper that has no modesty; it’s all, yep, you zip me up right here! The model used the ruffles more flatteringly, though.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Given that eyesore of a zipper, Lupita is doing as much with this dress as is humanly possible.

  • stubbornthoughts

I don’t like bronze on her as much as you guys do, it takes away from the beauty of her skin. I saw her in a yellow dress on Conan the other night and it was DIVINE against her gorgeous skin!

I am so not a fan of her eye makeup recently. But I’m a fan of Lupita minimalist makeup. I agree with a previous poster, poor girl needs a nap!

  • Bernadette

Love love love the edgy hair, perfect for this type of movie premiere.

  • camsteerie

“It loses us with the visible zipper….” I am so glad you said that. I’ve misplaced my glasses and I thought it was a snake!

  • melanie0866

This is probably my least favorite thing that she’s worn. It is widening – and she is NOT wide – and the length is stumpifying, and she is the opposite of stumpy. So think how bad this would look on a mere mortal.

  • VioletFem

It almost works for me. The visible zipper really knocks it down a few notches on the fabulosity scale. Still, it’s a gorgeous color and her hair and makeup are flawless, per usual.

  • Alloy Jane

Those lips are a bit Janice from Electric Mayhem. The dress looks (mostly) nice on her though. Not sold on the shoes or the eyeshadow.

  • Pablo

That is one uggly dress, it doesn’t look good on the model either

  • …This is the first time I haven’t loved her makeup–the eyeliner/shadow and the lipstick just seem smeary.

    She’s still working it, though!

  • elemspbee

North of the neck, stunning! that dress is a mess. it’s bronz foil. is it an unconvential material challenge winner for some fashion design show?

  • Clash D

Urgh, that zipper detail is ghastly! Also it looks different from the runway version. I think she wore it wrong.

  • Michelle Gennari

She’s lovely – as always. I am not liking the “Tin-Tin” hair on her though.
