Lupita Nyong’o in Chanel Couture at the 2014 BAFTA Nominees Party

Posted on February 18, 2014

Miss Lupita is in Chanel Couture, as God intended.

Lupita Nyong’o attends the 2014 BAFTA Awards Nominees Party in London in a Chanel couture dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps, Cartier jewelry, and a Chanel bag.

Chanel Fall 2012 Couture Collection

And a classic example of the right look on the right lady. You put this on Amy Adams and we’d probably retch obnoxiously and call it twee as fuck. But put it on Lupita and it just comes alive.

We hate to say it, though: the accessorizing is still problematic. Those aren’t the worst shoes in the world, but we’re not sure they really set the outfit off as well as they could. And the purse is just bad. Way too doll-like and matchy.

I still think it looks twee as fuck.

      • AnneElliot

I agree. I hate the skirt. Forgive me, Lupita, I still worship you.

        • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Count me in on the skirt — not a fan. But I wonder: does she have a perfect face? I think she might have a perfect face.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I think she does. Perfectly symmetrical, completely compelling.

          • Targettaste

Absolutely perfect face: that bone structure! Her makeup is always great, but I’d love to see her without makeup. I bet she’d be even more beautiful.

      • CupcakeTrudy

Confession, I usually like twee as fuck. But, this isn’t even cute and its just too much with the overly twee, matching cropped shrug, bodice, plus that awful skirt.

And those shoes are fairly awful too. Though, they probably wouldn’t seem as bad with a suit. They certainly don’t belong with a skirt and that ridiculous purse.
Her make-up, however, is divine. Just beautiful.

        • sugarkane105

Agreed. Your avatar is great, by the way. I miss Trudy.

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind the shoes for a change, but that bag looks like it belongs to a 12 year old. A very wealthy 12 year old, but still…

      • schadenfreudelicious

Indeed, that is not a grown woman’s handbag, even if it is Chanel…

      • Lucía Gavello

Agreed, and the ring with all that PINK is making my eyelid twitch like a junkie on withdrawal.

    • Scott Cooper

I think she has too much curve for the dress. You have to really look at it to decide that it’s fitting properly. At first look, it appears to be pulling across her hips, and knee length is not good for her. Her legs look oddly thick. Shorter, to show a bit of thigh, or longer, say mid calf. But there is no denying that pink is her color.

      • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

The shoes seem to be a real mismatch here as well. Seems the ladystars are having issues with too tight fit in the last few days. I will refrain from mentioning any shape wear, no matter how gently and in any context other than passing hypothetical reference for fear of being needlessly excoriated again.

        • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

And She’s beautiful here. Pink certainly agrees with her.

      • sagecreek

It’s pulling across the model as well — I think it’s a flaw in the dress.

      • gabbilevy

All the colors are her color. On her worst day, Lupita looks better than just about everyone else on their best day. Now if only she could figure out how to accessorize…

      • fursa_saida

I thiiiiiink there are some weird shadows going on making her legs look oddly thick, as you put it. Or at least contributing to the phenomenon. But I stared for a while trying to figure it out.

    • Flavia Pantoja

I am not convinced. I don’t think it’ s her style at all. It really looks like a borrowed outfit she is paid to wear.

      • omg_dora

Yes. Neither the shape nor the color are flattering on her (she can probably rock most colors & patterns, but not this lifeless messy pink), and the old-lady jacket just looks wrong.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

To be honest I think God intended her to be wearing a straighter skirt and have the sparkly tights on.

      • Imasewsure

Agreed… love the jacket and the top part of the dress on her only…. miss the tights…

      • Jacob Bowen

AMEN! I would pay whatever I needed to for those tights, or I would be just as happy if she wore them!

      • JauntyJohn

Yes! I know it’s Chanel couture and all, but it looks so stiff and thick it reads “oven mitt” to me.
Color me a crass barbarian to say such but… there it is.
        Love her eye makeup though.

        • KateShouldBeWorking

I think that’s an accurate description of Lagerfeld’s Chanel in general.

        • lunchcoma

Yeah, the shape combined with the texture just seems wrong. I’m sure it’s more flexible in person, but in pictures, it looks like it wouldn’t bend if she walked into a wall.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I wish she had done the sparkly silver stockings, cos I love that version on the runway.

But then again I am a sucker for sparkly things. :)

    • Mothra

I don’t like how bulky the skirt of the dress is. Pink is a nice color on her though. This just looks too…fuzzy.

    • StellaZafella

MSN is, just today, touting Lupita as “Hollywood’s latest obsession”…me thought “MSN hunny, yer WEEKS behind TLo and the Bitter Kittens!”

    • SayWhaaatNow

I think that if she had longer hair, this would look incredibly twee-as-fuck. Her hair as it is adds “edge” and mitigates the twee on any outfit she pulls on.

    • Imasewsure

Not awful but not amazing (except for the color which is fantastic on her). She has got to hire an accessory gay ASAP though

    • @Biting Panda

Is alright. Is not giving me life. But, I am never gonna be a pink Chanel kind of gal.

    • Rand Ortega

A simple white quilted Chanel handbag or clutch would’ve have been the perfect touch. Everything else– perfection.

    • alyce1213

Eh? I don’t think this Chanel suits her at all. The only things I like are her face and the silver pumps.

    • nycfan

my son says (he is almost 9): toooooo pink alright

    • BobAKABuffy

I hope PEOPLE magazine keeps her in mind when they do their next MOST BEAUTIFUL issue! She looks amazing in every color and is always stunning.

      • sagecreek

I hope so, too, but I fear that their subscriber demographics will get in the way. (In other words, she ain’t white enough.)

        • BobAKABuffy

Do readers do the picking or editors?
Whoever was responsible for Gwyneth…no excuse!

    • Glam Dixie

I think dresses that hit above the knee are problematic for her as she appears to be built a little thick in the legs. The color is really pretty against her skin, but I think that is some icy Hitchcock blonde’s dress.

      • Trickytrisha

She does appear to have a smaller upper half of her body. Although she is in no way heavy, her legs are usually best shown with a longer skirt, I think. Or pants… have we seen her in pants?

      • lundibleu

I agree about the Hitchcock blonde. Give it to Naomi Watts and lets see how that works.

    • judybrowni

That dress is oddly shaped, it looks wonky on the model.

But Ms. Lupita pulls it off! Brava!

    • SugarSnap108

If this is what God intended, I have to doubt the almighty’s fashion sense. Sorry, I don’t like this look for her at all.

    • Rebecca Bledsoe

Now I know for sure that Ms. Lupita is not a mere mortal, because she’s wearing that shade of purple eye shadow and it looks absolutely fabulous. Back in the 80′s I really wanted that shade to work on me…it really didn’t. Life is so unfair. At least the bag is terrible.

      • sagecreek

It didn’t work on me, either, but damn if I didn’t keep trying.

    • AmeliaEve

I think it suits her absolutely in terms of who she is, a very well-to-do young woman from a prominent international political family. It’s a “good girl” outfit that she could wear to take tea with her mother and sister at an elegant hotel. It’s not a Hollywood look at all. And the color looks beautiful on her.

    • Cheryl

I’m beginning to think that Lupita could wear a meat and burlap dress, and I would love it on her. I’m glad she passed on the tights, I love sparkly things, but they were too much for me. I like the ring, but that purse is cheap looking, even though I know it is Chanel.

    • kimmeister

I can’t see a pink Chanel suit and not think of Marge Simpson. Also, the lavender eye shadow on top of that mountain of carnation pink is giving me a toothache.

    • poggi

I don’t love this on her. It looks fine, but not my favorite. I know the cut of the skirt is deliberate, but the pockets and poufing make it look as though it’s wrinkling or pulling even though it isn’t.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

I really love those silver tights the model is wearing… What?? I can do that.

    • sagecreek

She does have a shoe blind spot, don’t she? Thank God…all that perfection was a bit too much :)

    • elirt

Twee as fuck and the purse pushes it over. I can’t with this look – it’s not meant for grown women.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Her makeup is stunning. I love the Chanel suit, but the shoes and the purse are not giving me life. I will overlook them given the makeup.

    • Anna

This still looks like a tea with Grandmama dress to me. While the shoes in and of themselves are not bad, they do nothing for Lupita’s legs – in fact, the pointed toes gives the impression that Lupita has thick ankles when she doesn’t.

    • Anna

Not my favourite Lupita look. But I vote for her as the next face of Chanel.

    • embers618

Things in this picture I love: Lupita, her makeup, the ring, the bag, the dress. Things in this picture I love together: Lupita and any one of the other things, paired with something a little cleaner or less matchy.

    • SouthernGirlRena

She is beautiful (obviously) but I hate that dress. If it were tiny and came with a tiara , it would be appropriate for a 5 year old in a beauty pageant. And it looks itchy.

      • elemspbee

Speak it! I agree with your observations here. That skirt that slightly balloons out looks awful on her; its really unflattering for her calves. This dress is weirdly mother of the bride and twee at the same time.

    • Sunraya

I really dislike Chanel, both because of the clothes and her history, but this looks good on her. Of course. :)

    • matildarf

She needs a shoe stylist. other than that, wonderful!

    • Betsy

She’s so gorgeous that it makes it difficult to say anything negative about her, but I do think she is getting a pass on a lot of her looks because she hit it WAY out of the park early into the awards season. Granted, she can make even the most questionable dress look great. I mean, this color comes alive on her. But I don’t really like this dress. Wish it were more fitted, maybe? Less princess sparkly?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Ah, Lupita in Chanel couture-the world is spinning happily on its axis. OK, the shoes could be improved, but she is such a breath of fashion loveliness.

    • GeoDiva

My theory about her shoe issues is that it is Nature’s way of showing us that nothing is completely perfect. Ms. Lupita comes very close, though.

      • quiltrx

It’s like the intentional mistake in an Amish quilt….to show that only God is perfect. :)

    • Jean Marie Downing

I rather like the purse. I have no idea what I could use it for (other than an Elle Woods costume), but… maybe with something all black? Or… a casual t shirt and jeans… or… I don’t know, but I love it.

    • quiltrx

If you told me “short, sparkly, pink Chanel suit” I don’t think I could have picked ANYONE I thought could pull it off. But there she is…

    • murt

I like the outfit on Lupita but it looks better on the model.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

her makeup team is to die for. those gays need a raise.

    • http://vogueworthyy.wordpress.com/ Anastacia

To be honest..it isn’t terrible, but it could have been MUCH better. Overall, not one of my favourites from the BAFTA’s. xo

    • Irene Palma

      The fabric looks so itchy.

    • Veronica1022

I don’t think thats her dress. Woman was born for slinky, that color in a floor length sheath would be awesome. I think that dress needs to go to Kieran Shipka, who would make the tweeness of it work.

    • LaSylphide

Not crazy about the shape of the skirt. The color is great on her.

    • marlie

Lupita’s makeup is gorgeous. The outfit is nice, but I don’t love it, but that’s just me. The shoes aren’t bad, but they’re uninspired. And the purse seems a little too juvenile for the look.

      • Leah Elzinga

I’m so glad you mentioned the makeup because it’s always so inspired, but I rarely think to take notice. With that in mind I just noticed that she has the COOLEST shaped mouth. Yes. I know that’s a weird statement, but scroll up and look at it! Isn’t it just so…. neat?!

        • marlie

I actually thought the SAME thing, but just didn’t comment on it. But she really does have interesting – and beautiful – features, especially her mouth.

    • nannypoo

I think the purse is adorable. I’m not wild about this outfit, but really she can wear anything and she always looks beautiful.

    • GillianHolroyd

That lipstick color is giving me life.

    • fringebenefit

She is pulling it off, but I find it an unflattering dress–even gives the model a spare tire.

    • bellafigura1

Uch, no, please don’t stuff her into Chanel head to toe, it’s just wrong. I can get behind a jacket with jeans, but this is waay too head-to-toe for me. And man, the stockings on the runway are what kicks it up for me. This is “yawn” — no no no.

    • http://www.momforless.com Crystal

I would like it better with a straight skirt. Not my favorite, but she’s a goddess and I will never tire of looking at her in pretty dresses.

    • SewingSiren

Very prim and pretty. This is what used to be called a “theater suit” back in the old days of couture. It’s more or less a suit made out of suiting material with a little sparkle, too glitzy for daytime, It’s intended to wear to the theater and then you remove the jacket for after the theater events to reveal a bare shouldered cocktail appropriate dress.

      • mjude

I have never heard the term “theater suit” & now I must have one (for my fantasy world). I appreciate learning something today :)

    • PeggyOC

That’s not quite the right hem length for her. She has great legs, and a very lean build, and yet this skirt length is stumpifying her legs.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I hate the shoes, but I love everything else. I don’t get how her stylist always gets it so right, except for the shoes.

    • Alyssa

Her makeup is stunning. I like the dress, but I’m a lover of pink, so I was predestined to like it. I will take the sparkly stockings, since Lupita didn’t. Also, I’ll take a pair of her shoes. My 5-year-old will take the purse.

    • Pablo

I don’t really like this on her, the skirt makes her legs look chubby and I don’t think the color looks good with her skin

    • Diego!

She looks amazing, as always does, but it’s true. She has problems with her shoes. ALWAYS. I think it’s time to pay attention there in order to give her the Lifetime WERQ label award (?) :P

    • Danielle

I woke up like this (Flawless)

    • ovarB

      The shoes are hiddy.

    • RescueMe23

This is the first thing I’ve seen her wear that I don’t like. The fit looks off.

      • halleygee

Same here, tried to like it but I can’t.

    • julnyes

Too much pink accessorizing, but the shoes are a slight improvement for her.

    • DeniseSchipani

I say this as someone who is a small dress size/not very tall (like Miss L, though I can only bow to her greatness), but who also has heavier calves — we don’t look good when dresses hit at the knee and then heels are too high with too-pointy toes. Somehow, as it’s doing here to Miss L, it makes our calves look even larger than need be.

    • kt

This doesn’t suit her in the slightest, but she does have a perfect face, to echo the face sentiments below. And I have to say it: her makeup artist needs to calm the heck down with the clown makeup. Ease off friend, she’s beautiful.

    • MM4321

I know it’d go right into T&O’s “twee” department, but darn I would love to see her stick a big ol’ pink bow right in her hair. I would die from the cuteness.

    • Kelly

Sorry, gents, but I don’t think this dress is right for her at all. That arch little-girl skirt is all wrong for Lupita’s sleek-and-fierce sort of elegance, and the top half looks like 1960s mother-of-the-bride.

    • Valentina Finn

I agree: the bag is too much with this look. So she should give it to me. I’ll put it to good use!

    • lillyvonschtupp

I don’t care what you say. I DROOL for that purse! Vintage Chanel.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I don’t love her in this look. She’s perfect in every way but “ladylike” isn’t the word for her.

    • Akemi

Not my favorite look from her, but she still looks a million times better in it than that model does.

    • Columbinia

I’m always stunned to see Uncle Karl do wearable, flattering clothes. I keep forgetting he can do that.

    • Clash D

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that this is a Lupita fail. Not convinced that this cotton-candy dress is her color at all and the make up (nice, but) looks mismatched with it. Wrong bag, bad shoes. Imo, the only good thing abt this look is that the upper portion of the dress looks great until it hits her midsection, then everything goes fug…

    • Laura Livingston

The color of the dress is beautiful on her. The rest? Fail.
