Lupita Nyong’o Double Style Shot

Posted on February 11, 2014

Miss Lupita is a stunning fashion goddess, with a team behind her making some seriously smart and fun decisions about her look. But good lord, do they all have a blind spot when it comes to shoes. Both of these looks look great if you stop scrolling past a certain point. If you want to preserve the idea that everything Miss Lupita does is the correct thing to do, we suggest you scroll very quickly once you get down to her knees.

Lupita Nyong’o attends the 86th Oscars Nominees Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California in Christian Dior.

What a spectacular dress. What a strange choice of shoe. What a disappointment that the shoes, bag and earrings are all exactly the same color. And such a bad color, to boot. That “Prince & The Revolution” shade of purple isn’t exactly the chicest shade.

Lupita Nyong’o attends The Hollywood Reporter Nominees’ Night 2014 Celebrating the 86th Annual Academy Award Nominees in Valentino Couture.

She looks amazing in bronzes, but those shoes could not be more wrong for this look.  The shape is ugly and the sparkly silver is so very wrong for that dress. if you wanted a contrasting metallic, then a pewter would’ve been the way to go.

Also, that neckline isn’t so great. It’s a striking look overall, mainly because she’s so striking. The top look only needed different accessories, but the more we look at this one, the more we think the only thing that works here is the color of the dress.

I have a friend who is a competitive bodybuilder. She looks like this in the sternum area. Yes, Lupita is in fabulous shape, but I don’t think this is a look that she should be showing off. The bronze satin is a fabulous color and fabric on her but she needs a more feminine neckline.

      • VioletFem

She shouldn’t be showing off her muscle definition? I strongly disagree with that assessment.

      • Kathy

Yes, I think this neckline isn’t particularly flattering either.

      • kmk05

I personally think the only thing that saves that neckline is her muscle definition. I can’t think of anyone else who could pull this one off.

        • conniemd

Agree totally. This is the first squared off sternum showing v-neckline that didn’t look ridiculous to me.

      • snarkykitten

naw, the dress is just fug.

    • a_liking

yes, her upper body is pretty spectacular. love that she shows off her shoulders.

    • SpillinTea

She needs to play Angela Bassett’s daughter in something…Hollyweird, make it so!

  • demidaemon

I love the first look, except for the awful accessories. Hate the second look, except for her face, which is always on.

    • SugarSnap108

Yep, her face is the one saving grace in that second look. The dress, from the weird neckline to the awkward hemline, is just bad. I have no idea why they never get her shoes right.

    • Trent

ITA. The first look — shoes aside — is flawless. The second look, IMO, is unflattering and wrinkly, and i don’t even like the color.

And yet both are worlds better than that NY Magazine layout…

  • filmcricket

Yeah, I’m not wild about either of these frocks, to be honest. The first one is quite pretty as a dress, but it seems to fit weird in the bust. The second one is downright ugly

    • @Biting Panda

The second look is is a crime!

      • Rhonda Shore

It really is! It only passes because of its color and Lupita herself.

    • jen_vasm

Both dresses are in serious need of tailoring in the bodice. I’m personally not wild about the colors/print of the first (because Lupita has set the bar so high in previous colorful choices) and the second is a good-on-paper-but disappointing-in-real-life kind of dress. And the shoes are 0 for 2.

      • marlie

I wonder if they’re so used to ladystars almost bursting out of dresses, they don’t know what to do to tailor clothes for one who is less busty.

  • That second look is just completely wrong. The dress doesn’t fit. The shoes are hideous. Her hair is pointed on top and her makeup even looks wrong for a change. Not good.

  • Sara

    It had to happen eventually.

  • RussellH88

The second dress is a bit tortured, but I don’t think she could ever look bad.

  • Rand Ortega

    Needle. Scratch.
    Gorgeous dresses.
Just don’t look at the shoes & nobody gets hurt.

  • Anna

Her team really needs to work on her shoe game, especially for the Oscars. “Prince & The Revolution” purple, could not be more true especially combined with velvet.

She’s holding it down in the first dress but the second one is swimsuit on top and bridesmaids dress on the bottom.

  • IraKi

I hate that neckline. I have NEVER seen anyone looking good wearing it. NEVERRRRRRR!

    • kmk05

She looks better than most, no?

      • IraKi

        Granted, but still!

        • kmk05

Totally agree! Anyone else and we’d be going ‘NOOOO’ and covering our eyes with a whimper. I mean, can you imagine if she had just a little more breasts, or they were slightly more pear-shaped, or if her posture wasn’t as regal? It’s not a great dress, and this is a shitty neckline, but by Jove is she making it look decent. It’s a FMO dress and she is carrying it off.

  • mjude

I like the 1st dress. have we not seen that shoe before? not a fan of 2nd look. is her team exhausted?

    • @Biting Panda

      Her Fallon appearance right?

  • KinoEye

The saving grace in number 2 is her decolletage and that sternum. And her shoulders. And her hair. The dress just gets in the way of all that. The first look has great colors for her, but as with another dress she wore recently, I find myself thinking that Kiernan Shipka would really knock it out of the park.

  • @Biting Panda

I think it’s interesting that the more coverage and momentum she’s getting, the less I’m liking each appearance. I worry that her team, who was fearless at first, is beginning to second guess themselves. Or maybe they have too many options now. I seriously hate the second look and had it been one of her first out the gate, it would have been a big hump to get over.

    • Do you think they are choosing the most prestigious designers on offer for each event, rather than choosing the best dresses for Lupita, maybe?

      • makeityourself

That bronze dress is Valentino couture. It was made specifically for her body, meaning it’s not a sample size, or borrowed from the runway show. I think you are close to the truth — it would be very difficult to turn down a Valentino couture garment, just because.

I know others disagree, but I think the fit is flawless and it’s an interesting look on her. Except for the shoes. Good god.

        • If that is Valentino couture they need to have a word with their petite mains, because I really don’t think the fit is flawless in that bodice.

      • @Biting Panda

I don’t know, maybe that’s exactly it. I just feel like in the beginning, they were searching for but now they’re sorting through.

  • That second dress looks so uncomfortable. I like her hair though.

    • JauntyJohn

Yes, they are playful with different hair for her, and this I find particularly nice.

  • Sarah

I love the first dress. I love the shoes, also, but not WITH it, for chrissakes. Second look is what you wear to the UPS Executive Ball. And then get really drunk, because you’re at a package delivery service formal event.

    • AthenaJ

And also go around making inappropriate ‘package’ jokes because well, why not?

  • Karen Belgrad

The second dress reminds me of bookcovers I’d make from grocery bags. I’m not sure why, it just does.

  • ConnieBV

Is the stitching on that Valentino meant to be part of the look? Because it looks like I could have sewed it by hand. And I don’t sew.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, that stitching is part of the look but I don’t think satin should ever hand picked in that manner, looks good on wool and linen, more of a tailoring technique. It is perfectly done as you can tell from the spacing and very difficult to do, the satin makes it even more so.

  • stubbornthoughts

Sadly, I don’t care for either look. Sometimes, even the most gorgeous of creatures have their not-so-hot days. The first dress is pretty, but I think the orange colors are washing out her face. The second is just…weird and ugly.

However, all of this could be attributed to bad lighting.

  • MilaXX

Her shoes so often somehow look orthopedic. First look I like the purple earrings & bag, but those crushed velvet shoes are hiddy. Second look the shoe just looks clunky. I think I refer her in gowns so I don’t have to see whatever shoe error is being committed.

  • Judy_J

The darts on that second dress are unfortunate. Actually, the entire bodice of that dress is unfortunate. I love her hair and makeup in both looks.

  • Dagney

    Muscles FTW!!!!

  • Dagney

Again. Beating my head against the wall. HEMLINE HEMLINE HEMLINE. Please god…bless lady stars with good hem judgement.

  • I agree with BKs here, BUT– I can’t get over how right and beautiful the color of the second dress is on her. I’ve never worn bronze on my dark skin because I thought it’d look dull or wash me out, but Lupita is showing me how very wrong I was. I can’t get over how stunning this color is on her.

The first dress is just classically gorgeous and she wears it so well.

    • If you have skin a similar shade YES YES YES to the bronze. It is gorgeous! I think the key is to make sure there is a contrast, several shades darker or lighter than your skin.

      • I just can’t get over how beautifully the fabric picks up the golden light from her skin and makes it glow. I’m actually wondering if they used a shimmer infused lotion on her arms, face, and decolletage (why am I using such an empearled word) and maybe not on her legs. Whatever the source, the result is beautiful. My skin isn’t quite the same shade as hers, but my mind is now open to the possibilities! The mention of pewter, too, piques my interest.

  • Daisy Walker

Maybe her team is deliberately pulling back so the Oscars look is that much more of a home run? The first look needs a belt–when a pattern like that doesn’t match (and I realize it can’t), I think it needs a belt to cover the seam. The second dress looks like uncomfortable lingerie.

  • LaDonna Carpenter

Wow, I usually agree that Lupita wears clothes incredibly well, but I really don’t like the second dress on her. First, it has all of the hallmarks of a satin dress after you’ve been forced to sit down…the creasing makes it look messy. But also, I really don’t like that neckline or the cut on her that much. The length is all wrong…she looks short. I can’t agree with you on this one, TLo. I may be in the minority, but I just can’t do it.

  • Gatto Nero

First dress — lovely, though the bodice doesn’t fit perfectly. The accessories are bewilderingly bad.
Second dress — spectacular color. Wow. But I don’t like the sternum-baring look and can’t give even Miss Lupita a pass. (Also, the weird shoe choice.)
She’s so gorgeous, they have to work to get it wrong. What’s the deal?

  • Maluca

Those shoes with the second dress need to be destroyed.

  • ashtangajunkie

The second dress doesn’t do her justice. The colour is perfect, but it is far too big for her. That said, nothing can really bring down that face, which is flawless.

  • LJCdoc

Insanely busy today, so only opening posts with Lupita or Dita in the thumbnail. About 1 1/2 for two on payoff for that. There really is a serious shoe problem here, but love the first dress.

  • SierraDelta

The bodice on each dress has fit problems; there’s too much odd wrinkling and pulling.

Her hair, as always, is amazing. How she manages to be so creative with such short hair is beyond me.

I don’t look at her shoes anymore. My idols don’t have feet of clay.

  • gracedarling

The earrings in the first look are great!

And it’s totally by the by, but they make me think she could really rock a slightly punk Medieval moor look. Can someone cast her as Othello, pls?

    • Suzanne Johnson

As Desdemona, yes. As Othello, no.

  • Noah

Aww. Our girl’s had her first false step. I’m almost proud.

    • sagecreek

I know. She was flying too close to the sun, so I’m glad she has fallen before the heights got fatal.

  • Constant Reader

Love the dress in the first look, agree with TLo on the accessories. The second look is a perfect example of her beauty making a bad dress look better than it should.

  • alyce1213

The first dress is lovely, only I don’t get the blue accessories.
Everything about the second look, except the color, should be forgotten and forgiven . . . this time. (#ToughLove)

  • Trickytrisha

First look, too much purple/blue, not nuts about the dress. Second look, too much sternum and really not nuts about the dress – ill fitting, too long, unappealing bodice, etc. The shoes are so sad. Still, her face is flawless.

  • Imasewsure

I think it’s easy to be blinded by her gorgeous face. I like the first dress but not really on her and the second dress is awful except for the color. Shoe choices are so strange! Must be a back story (or some back stabbing) there. These are headscratchingly awful as usual.

  • another_laura

Oh nonononoNO to that bronze dress. Yuck. The shoes certainly aren’t helping, but oy, that dress should just go back in the closet.

  • Sofia Bentivoglio

what a luscious lip color on her in the second look

  • alliekat9090

Second look- Mother of the Bride shoes. Ick.

  • BobStPaul

I’m not crazy about either dress on her. The first dress is beautiful but neither seems to fit correctly.

  • kimmeister

That 2nd dress is the first time I’ve seen her inching into vulgar territory. I prefer her in more regal looks.

  • pookiesmom

She looks glorious in both of these, let’s just get that out of the way. I don’t understand how she glows so consistently, it’s like she bathes in fairy dust.

I love the first look–don’t actually mind the shoes (*goes back and hides in my unfashionable cave*).

I hate the second look, though. The dress is awkward and the shoes are HIDEOUS.

So great to see Lupita on the blog again! I was surprised how much I missed her in the…what…week or so? that she’s been absent.

  • understateddiva

Fire your shoe wrangler, give your makeup artist a raise!

  • Pennymac

I find both of these neither terrible nor wonderful, especially since she’s already done so much better. Perhaps my expectations are skewed too high. The fit issues are what I find most disturbing. The shoe choices are just odd.

  • jilly_d

GIRL. that bronze number is not your dress. It has so many seams and straps and lines! She already has all these (gorgeous) lines going on from her outrageously well-defined upper body. This dress is fighting it, not showing it off.

  • Carly Clement

LOVE the first dress… and even the clutch is cute (just not the shoes or earrings) …. but that second dress is a disaster! The material is crumpled and the top is not flattering at all and the butt of the dress adds a whole lot of weight she does not have! A rare miss :/

  • elzatelzabelz

Those are some bad shoes, Harry.

  • lillyvonschtupp

I like the bronze dress but the bust fit is kinda wonky.

  • Miranda

OK, the shoe stylist needs to go…they’re effin it up.

  • MsKitty

Never thought I’d see the day that I didn’t like an outfit on The Goddess, but that second dress isn’t working at all. I can’t stop staring at Lupita’s sternum and I’m sure that wasn’t the intended effect.

  • marlie

I love the dress in the first look, and I hate that her stylists chose those accessories. I think the purple is all wrong. I really don’t like the second look at all (from the neck down). I don’t love the color, I also don’t like the shape of it, and there’s a little too much sternum with that neckline. And those shoes are HORRIBLE.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Don’t like the bronze look AT ALL, and for once, I am not even a fan of her makeup. The shoes are beyond redemption.

  • quiltrx

I’m going with a Pootie Tang response to that bronze number…Miss Lupita is a Stone Toni, but I’ve got to say the Nay-No to seeing her sternum at and below boob level!

  • Fred Vaughn

No one’s doing shoes right on the RC anymore… Though y’all knew that!

  • hmb

The second dress looks like it was cut for a woman taller and not as stacked as she is. Not to overuse the phrase, but the dress is the fight between who is wearing who. God, she’s gorgeous.

  • E. D.

So right about the shoes. Both examples are horrible.

  • The Dior is indeed spectacular.
I like the bodice of the Valentino in a “Grace Jones in Conan the Destroyer”-way.

  • Diego!

Agree 100%. Those shoes (in both cases) SUCK BIG TIME. She looks stunning as always!

  • BeeBeauNYC

She literally floors me in every outfit she wears. I agree though that her gay advisers have shitty shoe taste.

  • megohd

The straps totally fight with the lines/curves of her chest in that second look. I LOVE the bronze, but otherwise, GTNYD.

  • Tafadhali

I kind of love the first pair of shoes… but not with that dress.

  • Jessica Freeman

Really love the first dress, but blue velvet shoes? Um. I really do not like the second dress on her. Horrible shape and a bad fit.

  • carnush

The first dress really does present a shoe challenge. I hate what they chose, but I’m having a hard time picturing the RIGHT shoe for this look. The second dress needs a simple satin black sandal, or, yes, pewter.

  • Sam Erin

It’s that time of year again…when red carpet choices are slimmmm pickings as the ladystars prepare for the Oscars. The next few weeks are going to be rough.

Exhibit A: Kate’s Vanna White goes to space number

Exhibit B: The not so successful deployment of that Valentino^

  • Shawn EH

Love the purple shoes, they’re fierce! Really dislike the strappy sandles with the strappy dress; she needs to borrow those feathered things from Tilda!

  • Janet B

Hate the Valentino dress; I don’t know who should be wearing the wide/deep squared off neckline.

  • The Queen of the Wrong Shoe strikes again.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

THAT SECOND DRESS!! THAT SECOND DRESS!! Good LORD, she is spectacular! I don’t even mind the shoes on that second look! (The shoes on the first one, yes, but the second look? I’ll let it slide).

  • ScarlettHarlot

It had to happen sometime, I suppose, but that second look is the first time for me that her natural stunning-ness hasn’t been able to overcome a mediocre frock. And I know we only see a small sampling of all photos taken that night, but from these, even she looks less confident and pretty unenthusiastic about it.

  • I literally laughed out loud at the shoes paired with the bronze dress. I may or may not have also gasped “whyyyyyyyyy?!” Sorry, Lupita. You are still my new fashion goddess, though. :3

  • kt

She is gorgeous. These dresses are not.
