Lupita Nyong’o and Naomi Watts at the Calvin Klein Collection Fall 2014 Show

Posted on February 14, 2014

Lupita and Naomi make nice-nice with Anna.

Lupita Nyong’o and Naomi Watts attend the Calvin Klein Collection Fall 2014 fashion show in New York City.

“Best Friends FOREVER!!!!!! Don’t ever change! I’ll always remember the great times we had in Mr. Klein’s room! See you in the fall!!!!”

She put those glasses on and we fell out, child. How cute is that look? We weren’t entirely on board until the frames came out because, as good as she looks in minimalist looks, she can rock the hell out of far more complicated outfits than this one. But something about those frames just made it all perfect. We’ll say this: those are the best shoes we’ve ever seen her wear.

Miss Naomi is serving up 21stC Hitchcock Blonde realness on a silver platter. She looks gorgeously icy and unattainable. Love the hair and the jewelry. So-so on the shoes.

Ha! Scrolling down, I thought “Oh how CUTE are those glasses!!” Glad I wasn’t the only one :)

    • Nariya

In a true moment of Bitter-(kitten)-ness, when I hit the glasses photo I actually whispered out loud, “… bitch.” God, I wish I looked like that in my glasses! This woman defies probability, I swear.

    • sojourneryouth

Seriously! Those glasses really do make the look. She looks like the really cool schoolteacher all the boys have a crush on.

  • Akemi

OMG, the glasses! My crush on Lupita just doubled.

    • gabbilevy

Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly love her ore.

      • AnneElliot

I know!!! She looks adorably brainy AND fashionable!! I have such a girl crush on her. And I still love Naomi but I hate her dress.

  • M_E_S

I can’t get over how freaking amazing she looks in those glasses. That’s how I always like to imagine I look when I put mine on- sexy geek chic.

    • RidgewayGirl

Yes, that’s how I imagine I look, but suspect that is not how I actually appear to others.

    • Lucía Gavello

Eyewear can really make or break a look, and its power is often underestimated. When I bought my frames (thick with a very slight cat-eye shape) my mum said “you look like a bitchy secretary”… I took it as a compliment.

      • M_E_S

I just got new frames over Christmas and my mom said I looked like an eccentric scientist. Since I am both eccentric and a scientist, I guess that’s a good thing?

        • Lucía Gavello

Of course it is! I just pictured Cosima from Orphan Black (If you’re not watching that, YOU SHOULD)

          • M_E_S

Haha! Maybe I should figure out how to make my hair cooperate and cosplay her at Comic Con this year!

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

That was the look I was going for!

        • Lucía Gavello

You have a Joan Holloway vibe that makes me jealous Alicia!

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

            Thank you! That’s so sweet!

  • Tatiana Luján

I hate both her shoes and Naomie’s. They both look awsome if you stop scrolling before the ankles show.
Those shades of pink and bluegreen do suit the wearer’s colors.

    • ShaoLinKitten

I agree. I hate both of their shoes. I find Naomi’s dress kind of blobby too, but she’s working it. Lupita as always is the nonpareil.

      • leahpapa

Footwear seems to be Lupita’s Achilles heel. I’m just gonna leave that one right there.

        • ShaoLinKitten

I see what you did there.

      • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

“Blobby” is the word for it. I was kind of surprised at the choices, but what do I know. This is probably the spring solstice 2015 collection.

    • kimmeister

I literally groaned out loud at the terribleness of Lupita’s ankle straps. Really, the only people who come close to pulling off ankle straps are those with very thin ankles and shins that have zero curvature until almost the knee.

  • BeeBeauNYC

I hope Ms. Wintour didn’t put her sunglasses on indoors just so she could roll her eyes at the collection!

  • LaSylphide

Another A-Lister in glasses. After 60 years of being told glasses make you ‘plain’ … It absolutely makes my day when I see somebody that gorgeous wearing her specs without shame. And both ladies look beautiful.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

And one of the most celebrated beauties of the year.

  • Peri7473

very surprised to read your comments about her shoes. a) in the first picture, they make her legs look chubby, and b) naked shoes with a sweater dress? No, no, no. I agree with you 99% of the time. this is one of those 1%’s

    • Tatiana Luján

I couldn’t agree more with you.

    • jw_ny

I agree with you on the shoe comment, not on the “legs look chubby” one tho. Her legs look great imo. :)

    • another_laura

Regarding LN’s legs looking chubby, I think in that first pic you might be catching some shadows cast on the floor behind.

  • Noah

I’ve never seen glasses tie a look together like that before. Lupita never ceases to surprise and impress.

  • @Biting Panda

Beautiful, if not a little Easter-y.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I was just going to say – the two of them with Wintour in her fur, they look like the world’s loveliest easter eggs and their bunny!

      • omg_dora

        Hee!

      • Rand Ortega

        Girl, you’re on FIRE today!

        • NYCGlamourpuss

          (*Blush!*)

  • boweryboy

I hate both of their dresses. I agree on Lupita’s shoes and glasses and Naomi’s Hitchcock reference is spot-on.

  • jw_ny

really cute little sweater dress on Lupita, and I said “bitch!” when I saw her in those glasses…wow they look smashing on her. I’m not digging the shoes tho…just can’t with toes exposed in NYC winter…especially when I see Anna all wrapped up in a fur and boots.

Naomi…very pretty, but she looks rather chilly (or icy…lol)

    • NYCGlamourpuss

You know, I have to agree wholeheartedly, because with this shitty, horrible weather in NYC, we’ve been complaining a lot on here that some of the stars just don’t know how to dress properly for this deep freeze. And I even said in a post the other day, if you can turn it out in this weather and look both stylish AND keep warm, then that’s awesome! So when I see Anna Wintour doing just that – looking amazing, stylish and WARM – I can’t help but admire the hell out of her. And I say that as someone who is vehemently anti-fur – if that were faux, this would be a winning fashion week outfit for me!

      • FrigidDiva

        Preach!

      • Jessica Freeman

I’m sure Wintour is in the “I’m too old for that shit” category. OH, and she’s Anna Wintour.

      • Kayceed

The power dynamic here is delicious. Those with the most power get to be warm and comfortable. Those whose role is to be decorative – don’t.

  • Bexxx

I audibly gasped when I got to the pictures with the glasses. Meryl, this is a learning moment.

  • Liz

I was really hoping there would be captions under each picture. Like the second from the bottom Naomi is saying through her clenched teeth “I can’t believe she made me wear this summer dress in the dead of winter and she’s all bundled up in fur”. Lupita “I know, I’m in these fucking naked shoes”

  • Jennifer Schiller

Without the glasses, I actually really don’t like the outfit. And to be fair, even with them I’m not sure I love the standing up effect. It makes her weirdly bumpy. The colors on both are nice, and I love the sitting picture with the glasses. Perfect on her! Take note trendy people of the world, big frame glasses still need to be proportionate to your face :)

Is it just me or do the pictures of Naomi and Lupita sitting and taking in the show remind make anyone else feel like they’re grown-up past supermodels judging the new talent? Like, see girls, this is how fabulous is done.

    • AnneElliot

I have to admit I was so distracted by Lupita’s adorable glasses and cute shoes that I momentarily forgot her sweatery dress, which I disliked. It gave me flashbacks to bad angora sweaters.

  • msdamselfly

Like Anna’s boho-chic outfit. Look at those boots-they even look worn!

  • Rand Ortega

I’m sorry, who is that Miss Lupita is sitting next to? Anna Wintour. That Vogue covers is hers, bitches! Just a question of when. September (she wins) or January (she doesn’t).

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Unless they put her on January because they know what a boost she’ll give it. :)

    • twigg

      I vote both!

  • FrigidDiva

I’m usually anti-booties with short dresses but I think Luptia’s ensemble would have looked better with some black ankle boots. Naomi could have used some boots too. I just can’t get past wearing summery shoes in the dead of winter, I don’t care if you’re at the front row of a fashion show or not.
Also, every time I see Anna Wintour I think of Edna from The Incredibles.

    • KinoEye

Edna was apparently modeled after Anna Wintour, so you’re spot-on!

      • FrigidDiva

I can just see her in a meeting on the September issue yelling “NO CAPES!” while throwing her skinny soy latte at her petrified assistant. Ironically enough, capes are in.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I thought Edna Mode was based on Edith Head?

        • KinoEye

You are also correct! She appears to be a hodgepodge of different fashion icons throughout history.

    • AnneElliot

God, I love Edna Mode. She’s the best thing in that movie. Sometimes I just watch her scenes and fast-forward through all the other parts.

  • Pennymac

God, I adore the 4th pic down with the three of them, sitting legs crossed, staring into the distant fashion realm while looking all kinds of different flavor fierce!

  • another_laura

Absolutely stunning colors on both of them. The glasses just made my day.

  • Nancer

Wow, those lights must have been super bright to throw such distinct shadows on Lupita and Naomi’s legs! They both look adorable.

“How to Get Ahead in Fashion Without Really Trying.”

  • another_laura

On LN’s legs looking chubby, ankle straps are not anybody’s friend, but in that first pic you may be catching some shadows cast on the floor behind. Those legs don’t look chubby to me, for sure.

    • in a pickle

As someone who does have short chubby legs, I just can’t with ankle straps. I wince when I see anyone wear them. All I can think is, ‘you’re cutting off the line of your leg! What are you doing that for???’

  • Kirstin McAulay

    Fabulous ladies

  • MilaXX

Lupita also wore the glasses when she went to the basketball game after appearing on Fallon. I like her in glasses and which she did more RC’s with them. As much as I don’t quite understand the naked shoe in the winter, for a change I don’t hate Lupita’s footwear.

  • Michael Martin

Miss Lupita needs an eyewear contract STAT.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Lupita obviously provides an exceptional canvas but I’m convinced that Santa Baby Jeebus does her makeup.

  • omg_dora

Check out Tippi Hedren reborn! Naomi Watts looks fabulous.

  • crash1212

That’s the best Anna Wintour has ever looked. I hate Lupita’s shoes – any shoe that makes HER ankles look stumpy should be burned.

  • Jacob Bowen

At school I have to google the headline to find the pictures and when I saw the glasses I screamed, “I hope they comment on them because they are PERFECTION!” Not in love with either shoe, Lupita’s is pretty but gives her chunky feet and Naomie’s are so kindergarten Catholic school girl, but I can look past them.

  • Jessica Freeman

Those are two radiant women. Seriously, both are glowing.

  • KinoEye

Anna. Do you see the gorgeous, otherworldly creature in glasses next to you? Yeah. THAT’S your new muse. This is the woman around whom you center the September issue. This is the woman you bend over backwards to feature in as many issues as possible. This is the new direction. Embrace it.

  • Little_Olive

It bothers me a bit that Lup and Nao have naked legs with open shoes while Mrs Wintour is sporting tights and sensible (and not very pretty) boots.

Is there not a way to be chic with your feet covered? We’ve seen more coat porn than anyone in their right mind (wallet) could take, but always over frilly dresses on naked legs (except for FLOTUS).

  • mjude

love. I covet those glasses. they made the ice queen smile.

  • Cassidy Olsen

Their matching pastels made me smile. Both look gorgeous.

  • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

They should swap shoes, and Lupita should send me her glasses when she’s done with them.

  • Anne

She looks comfy and her glasses are awesome.

  • Trickytrisha

Does this mean Lupita is officially a fashion goddess? Sitting next to Anna Wintour at the Calvin Klein (or any other) show has to be an apotheosis event.

  • Judy_J

Just when you thought Miss Lupita couldn’t look any more gorgeous, she pulls out the perfect frames and raises the bar just a bit higher.

  • Anna

Glasses cancel out the shoes for me. I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 4 and was always told to take them off for photos so that I would “look better.” To see Lupita wearing hers had me nearly getting up and doing jumpy claps in front of everyone at work.

They both look fantastic from the ankles up, hate both of their shoes.

    • KinoEye

Ughhh. Same here, since the age of 6. I’ve also always hated that trope in the movies where a pretty girl with glasses is considered unattractive. Until — BAM — she takes them off, and she’s suddenly a supermodel.

      • demidaemon

Apparently, the going message is smart girls/boys aren’t cute/pretty/handsome/etc.

It’s really passe, lame, and insulting.

        • KinoEye

If they/we are considered attractive, it’s thought of as a fetish — just like Anna said, the sexy librarian and all that. To which I’ve actually been compared while wearing glasses. He made sure to clarify I looked like the “fantasy” kind and not the normal kind of librarian, as if it was somehow an insulting comparison. Buhh. But I have to say I’m loving the outrage against standards of beauty/behavior here. It’s good to vent.

      • Anna

Oh yes, “men never make passes at girls who wear glasses.” Either that or she’s fetishized as the sexy librarian, we don’t have to punish her for her intelligence and she’s less of a threat if we put her in a tight sweater and skirt. Then it’s hot.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Anyone who tells you to lose the specs for photos deserves a sock in the jaw. My husband actually hinted that he’d like it if I stopped wearing contacts daily, because he prefers the way I look in my glasses.

      • Anna

That’s sweet about your husband! The photo thing happened more often when I was a kid and in my teens. I’ve always liked wearing them though and I still give the same response now as I did then, “Why? I like them.”
I did have a brief flirtation with contacts in my late teens, but that was more because of idiotic vanity. I was putting all kinds of stupid highlights in my hair and wanted to see what I would look like with green or blue eyes. Putting them in freaked me out though. Now there’s so many cool frames out there, so plenty of cute choices should you decide to go full-time with it. I actually look forward to my eye exam every two years so I can get new ones, they’re such a part of who I am, I’d feel naked without them.

        • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Oh yeah, pretty much the second he floated that idea I went full-time with my glasses. Cheaper and more comfortable than contacts (I have really bad vision and astigmatism, so I have to wear hard toric lenses.) Now I am known by all the local bus drivers for my funky frames, they have recognized me walking and waited so I could catch the bus on multiple occasions. If I switch pairs my students and the bus drivers actually complain haha. My sister-in-law has perfect vision and she bought a pair of fake frames to wear as an accessory, she’s the type who’s always shopping and spends at least an hour on her makeup daily. Glasses are where it’s at! I only miss my contacts when I’m working out/dancing.

  • oklund

I’m clearly spending too much time on the internet. Those glasses look photoshopped.

  • Paula Pertile

I went “Basic Instinct!” when I saw the first one (cropped). No?
    They both look icy fierce.

  • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I love how Wintour goes from warm to her fellow front row to completely neutral/cold with her eyes hidden when it’s showtime. Respect!

    • Jessica Freeman

Oh yes, but she is totally judging their outfits in shot 2.

  • bellafigura1

The two of them together are just like ebony and ivory dazzling.

  • myristica_fragrans

lupita finally got her shoe game together! this is the first time in a while that i didn’t hate the footwear.

  • in a pickle

The colors are lovely on both women, and I love, love the glasses, but I don’t think either of those dresses flatter. They’re both beautiful, but those silhouettes are not doing them any favors.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I love a fluffy mohair sweater dress as much as the next woman, but I really don’t like seams that make it look like you’ve got it on inside out. The glasses are incredibly cute though.

  • bertkeeter

She’s a black Audrey Hepburn in her chicness and beauty! OMG…she even got AW to smile!

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

They look very cute and easter-y, which is appropriate I think?? Lupita looks FAB with those glasses

  • MaggieMae

    Swoon!

  • Sofia Bentivoglio

“She put those glasses on and we fell out, child.” um, i need you guys in my life immediately. also, that first picture of her in the glasses is exquisite.

  • Sally Spannagle

Beautiful color on both of the ladies, but not sure about the styles

  • Milos Mom

Points to Lupita for the strategic placement of the clutch.

  • MaggieMae

Not sold on the shoes for either of them. The dresses are chic. The glasses? Come on, Lupita, can you make us love you even MORE?! Adorable.

  • ShaoLinKitten

What is Naomi’s dress made out of? Looks like pleather and I bet she’s sweating underneath.

  • stubbornthoughts

Lupita in glasses >>>>>> Lupita in that dress. I agree fully with you, Uncles. I didn’t care for Miss L in these pics until those glasses were on.

    Naomi looks fucking amazing.

  • JulieTy

I thought Naomi was Sharon Stone.

  • Lower L

I love the glasses. What I love even more is the knowing expression on Lupita’s face in the final picture. Can somebody create an episode of Sherlock with her locked in a battle of wits with Benedict Cumberbatch? Pretty please?

  • demidaemon

I love the glasses. So distracted by their legs though, in both good and bad ways.

  • DagnyReardon

The shoes are ridiculous. We have over a foot of snow in NYC and puddles the size of Lake Erie. And the limo argument doesn’t work because there is snow on every curb. Miss Anna rules.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The glasses! I am in love!

  • luludexter

I love Naomi’s look – very Doris Day (although Doris’ shoes would have been ice blue too!).

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

lupita’s feet look so pretty in those shoes, and her legs are just stunning. i don’t care that she’s matchy, she is so breathtaking.

  • macwell

I lost it with the shades – they are EVERYTHING!! Love her more than cook food! ;)

  • cmb92191

It’s official. Lupita can do no wrong!

  • quiltrx

Both gals look great. And it’s cute how Anna pretended to acknowledge their existence. :)

  • Judih1

They look like Easter Eggs in the spring and Anna is dressed weather appropriate. How crazy is that?

  • uprightcitizen

Naomi is wearing the exact same shoes my spinster 2nd grade teacher, Miss Crumpacker (seriously) wore in Bethany, Oklahoma in 1971. She was a crusty, grouchy little old woman, but she was probably 4’11″, so consistently wore the highest shoes I’d ever seen … with that same squared off toe. Seeing them, patent leather and all, is déjà vu.

  • e jerry powell

At least Naomi brought a coat. Where is Lupita’s? That sweater dress will not do in freaking Polar Vortex days.

  • CeeRich

They both look fab. Love that they are sitting next to Ms. Wintour and upstaging the life out of her. I need those glasses!

  • kerryev

Ditto on the glasses reaction. <3

  • kategs

Who can find out who makes those specs?

  • lalahartma

    Love the glasses!

  • Crystal

She should wear those glasses all the time! She is so gorgeous!

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Those really are great shoes, and I like that they match her dress. Love that icy blue color on Naomi.

  • marlie

Both Lupita and Naomie look great, and I really like Naomi’s shoes, as basic as they are. And Lupita looks fantastic in those glasses!!

  • Fred Vaughn

What part of “good black don’t crack” will you miss THIS time?

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

    NERDY LUPITA I DIE.

  • Danielle

Someone on Tumblr posted a photo from this set and used the caption “Anna tells Lupita she’s going to be on the September cover” and I immediately HIGHTAILED it over here to see if it was true. Alas…
