Kiernan Shipka in Delpozo at the 2014 Costume Designers Guild Awards

Posted on February 24, 2014

You have got to give it to this girl. Regardless of what you think of this dress:

“Mad Men” star Kiernan Shipka attends the 2014 Costume Designers Guild Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California in a Depolzo dress paired with earrings by Dana Rebecca Designs and lace pumps.

Delpozo Spring 2014 Collection

It’s hard to deny that she’s making it work to an astonishing degree. That dress requires some serious fashion chops in order to pull it off. Somehow, adding a third print in the shoes brings it together. Seriously. We don’t know what magic or alchemy was used to pull that trick off, but it works. We suspect being very young, very pretty, and remarkably well trained on the whole poise thing has a lot to do with it.

It’s a little jarring seeing her in the big girl makeup, but she looks really pretty and it’s not overdone.

Actress Kiernan Shipka achieved her Doctorate of Fashion at the tender age of 14. That’s right y’all, we can just call her Dr. Shipka now.

    • Lucía Gavello

And the Doctor is prescribing Posture and Eyebrows. She’s giving me LIFE.

    • gabbilevy

Is she accepting new patients? I could use some of the good doctor’s advice.

    • Danielle

Her brow game alone was strong enough to get her accepted to the program.

    • RandiLu

She truly is the Doogie Howser of fashion.

  • Lori

She really is fashion magic. On the model the dress looks more than a little dumb, but on Kiernan it’s pretty cute. I’m basically the opposite, (fashion Kyrptonite or something) so I’m really impressed by her gift.

    • tereliz

And do my eyes deceive me or is that actually TWO extra prints the shoes are bringing to the equation? Lace covered… SNAKESKIN?!?!

  • Emily Dagger

In EVERY respect — fit, styling, not looking like an over made-up Cold War robot, everything — she is wearing this better than the model. Well done, you wise little thing.

    • The Counselor

      heh, “made-up Cold War robot”…

    • random_poster

I agree, and I don’t like the dress much. She makes it look much better than it actually deserves to look.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

See, SJP? THAT’s how you do your waterline.

    • Alyssa

I had always wondered how celebs got their eyeliner like that, until I recently read an article on how to do a waterline. Now I know, and am super excited to try it! Makeup dork right here.

      • @Biting Panda

I pretty much only line my waterline. I have hooded lids and long lashes, any liner applied at my lashes just makes me look punched. Sadly I simply cannot rock the winged cat eye, despite how desperately wish otherwise.

      • Laura Renee

Can you point me to said article? Using keywords and semafore, if links are not allowed…

        • Alyssa

I came across it on facebook, which I can’t access at work (they even block the app on my phone!). I’ll see if I can find it again tonight and post it for you!

    • Lilithcat

I hope she stops that. Using eyeliner that way can irritate your eyes and screw up your tear ducts.

      • Laura Renee

        SJP or Kiernan?

        • Lilithcat

I was thinking of Kiernan, but they both should probably stop it.

  • Kate Andrews

I love the shoes too — you’re right, they make the outfit. That girl has fashion in her veins.

  • LaSylphide

She seems to be taking a page from the Emma Watson book of fashion advice, How to Wear Weird Outfits and Not Look Stupid.

    • KinoEye

She even looks like she could be Emma’s younger cousin/sister.

      • Kristin McNamara

I’ve always thought they looked related.

  • Musicologie

I LOVE her makeup! Clean, fresh, and adult without trying too hard. Just perfect for where she is in her career.

  • Kate Andrews

I’ll bet she and Janie Bryant have some fun chats.

  • CommentsByKatie

By all accounts I should hate this dress, but somehow, on her, it’s cute and fun and I love it. Attagirl.

  • KaileeM

I hope she never, ever thins her eyebrows. They are glorious.

I think the dress is all kinds of fun, too.

    • zuzu

      I envy those brows.

  • sojourneryouth

Somehow she “gets” this dress, and is just living it out loud! I have no idea how, because I truly do think it’s a weird dress, but she’s making it work, and I love her in those shoes. How is she so fashionably dressed for a cocktail party when she’s too young to attend?

  • Counterpoint

I don’t like grown-up shoes on little girls. Other than that she is styled to perfection, and the dress looks much more interesting in this length.

    • @Biting Panda

I agree, but like all rules for girls, there’s times to bend them. I think Industry events qualifies. Also, I noticed they are low, nearly a kitten heel.
The model shows us that sandals and beartraps are a NO. I suspect a flat would have ruined this as well.

    • Lilithcat

      She’s not a “little girl” anymore! She’s a full-fledged teen-ager.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

That face sure helps to make it work. Seriously, she’s GORGEOUS in a way only a fictional daughter of Jon Hamm and January Jones can be.

  • Elana Bryan

*GASP* – just beautiful. I can’t wait to see what she does when she gets older.

  • Dagney

This is lovely on her and she working it well. Agree, the heavier than usual eyewear is jarring, though it’s not Sarah Hyland overdone.

  • Alyssa

This is one of those looks that I shouldn’t like…the style of the dress, the additional print in the shoes…but on her, it looks amazing. She is just delightful, and has such a fun sense of fashion!

  • KinoEye

She’s making this work for her when it absolutely shouldn’t. There are women a decade older than her who can’t manage that. The makeup is a beautiful transition to a more grown-up look for Miss Kiernan, who will hopefully knock our socks off for years to come.

  • Lilyana_F

I can’t imagine liking this on someone else, but she looks absolutely adorable.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I think this looks better on her than on the model because she’s shorter and the wide part of the skirt hits at a better place. And she is very young, very pretty and very poised. Love her makeup.

  • imspinningaround

Kiernan Shipka never skips leg day. Respect.

  • VioletFem

I like the dress, which looks surprisingly good on her. I have to disagree about the shoes, though, a solid color would have been better.

    • kimmeister

Yeah, the additional print(s) are too much.

  • JauntyJohn

That dress has a girl’s playful silhouette and a woman’s print and sophistication, ergo, it is well nigh perfect for a 14 year old girl with the poise of a 24 year old woman.
    I bow down.

  • filmcricket

She and Emma Watson not only look alike, they share the ability to take difficult dresses and mostly make them work by dint of pairing them with their own fresh-faced looks and preternatural poise. It’s impressive. I don’t care much for this frock, but she’s working as best as anyone could.

    • schadenfreudelicious

They need to play sisters in something immediately…

  • Judy_J

Our little Kiernan is growing up….*sniff*. AMC is showing past episodes of Mad Men, and she just looks so young in those episodes. It is kind of jarring to see her looking like such a young lady. And she has grown up beautifully.

  • ralish

She looks lovely. She and her people are doing a great job handling the transition from young girl to young teenager. The dress is so fun and youthful that the heavier eyeliner and lower-cut neckline don’t look jarring or inappropriate.

    • Kayceed

I was just admiring that neckline! A deeper-V, but not in any way vulgar. Very nice!

  • alyce1213

Love! This is such a fun dress for a young stylish girl. I love the print shoes, but I wish they had a kitten heel. They aren’t stilettos, but I think they’re a little too high — for both the dress style and her youngness.

  • MilaXX

I love this. It’s fun & young and yes she is making it work.

  • The Counselor

*So* poised. And, yes, the extra eyeliner made me think “big girl makeup” too. I’m getting a kick out of how the last time I saw her was yesterday when I rewatched “The Fog” (wanted to make my pregnant self feel fortunate about how times have changed), and she was all little-girl-lispy during her late-night bonding with Don over hash-and-eggs 🙂

    • Candigirl1968

She’s just 14. They eyeliner, when you see it up close, is bordering on “a bit too grown.”

Despite myself, I do love this outfit. I’m not sure who else could pull it off.

      • marlie

I would agree with you about the makeup for an “everyday” look, but for an industry event, it doesn’t bother me.

  • Girl was born with it. She clearly loves fashion. And she’s cute and funny and a good actress.

  • Tatiana Luján

She makes me want to wear a puffy short dress and drink pink lemonade.

  • jilly_d

I’m not looking at anything but that luminous face.

  • RussellH88

She’s going to rule the world, isn’t she?

  • decormaven

Oh my goodness, she is working this so well. Just think how fab she will look in costuming in this season of Mad Men. Kiernan will steal the style spotlight for sure.

  • crash1212

Her shoe choice makes the outfit. She looks really cute and accomplished. Nicely done.

  • Cheryl

How much does this have to do with the Adorableness that is Kieran? I love it, but I’m thinking if this was GOOPY, I’d loathe it.

    • ElaineMarie34

agreed… much like Kerry Washington, her personality and attitude adds a lot.

  • I love the dress and appreciate the 3rd print addition of the heels. This is just a great look altogether.

  • Sarah

Wow you guys are right. I dislike florals, checks, AND animal print, personally, but she looks totally cute. Amazing alchemy indeed!

  • Nancer

The dress is all kinds of fugly, but she looks really cute in it. It’s fashion magic!

  • marlie

I love the dress on her, but the shoes aren’t working for me. It’s one print too much. But otherwise, I think she looks really pretty, and her makeup looks good, and not too mature for her.

  • KT

I adore this whole look. It’s cute, fun, whimsical and interesting. I agree that the shoes really complement the dress, the makeup is very pretty and enhancing (I didn’t realize she had hazel eyes until just now) — it’s all totally working. Get it, Sally.

  • bellafigura1

This is her “on the brink” dress. It’s a fashion moment that’s all hers.

  • SouthernGirlRena

Every single thing she has on is hideous but she is so adorable, I don’t mind it as much as I should. I guess that is what “making it work” is all about.

  • snarkykitten

    I’m nauseous. I’m nauseous.

  • B_C_J

Very pretty young lady in a clown outfit. The shoes are hideous as well.

  • megohd

I worry for this girl. She just seems so perfect in every way, which feels like a recipe for disaster. I will be happy to be wrong.

  • This girl. I love her, and she is probably the only person on Earth who could wear this dress without looking like a smacked ass. She looks cute, fun memorable, chic, and like a teenager all at the same time. Fashion prodigy.

  • Shawn EH

What a clever outfit to wear to the costume designers awards! Head-turning!

  • sagecreek

Awwww, she’s feeling her oats! And yes, she makes it work. Just as long as she realizes that she can’t do that very often 🙂

  • Gatto Nero

I’m not wild about the dress, but she’s really selling it, and the shoes are a great finishing touch. She’s adorable.

  • If that’s not a schizo-picnic dress, I don’t know what is.

  • Mariah J

  • quiltrx

I kind of like this in a nutty 80s fashion kind of way…like something that should be on a Go-Go’s album cover. And I’d be willing to bet she had those costume designers looking!
(PS this sounds like a fun event to attend, particularly if the costumes got paraded around a lot!)

  • abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxqyz

if she is 3 inches taller, and i were Dior PR, I would sign her as spokeswoman right away.

  • livesarah

Love the gingham, hate the dress, but she is making it work. I generally feel that she is overrated by the BK’s, but she nearly always manages to look age-appropriate and pretty cool.

  • Bozhi

I love this look. Is she wearing hose? She looks so polished.

  • BayTampaBay

IN! She looks better than the model!

  • Crystal

  • StarburstLady

I’m I really going to be the only person to disagree? Le sigh. I can’t stand the way that top part is blouson-ing out on her, and combined with the checked print, I think it looks like she tossed a tablecloth on top of a pretty dress. Not that I’m complaining too much– to me this hits the mark of “awkward but ambitious things one wears as a teenager”. But I really can’t stand the dress, and in fact I think it looks better on the model.

  • ElaineMarie34

Smiling, sassy Kiernan is better in this dress – times a million – than the dour model. Super cute and fresh and just right for her.

  • E. D.

I always like her makeup. This works well for me, but I wish the top wasn’t so wide at the bottom/back.

  • DuBey2

Perfection. She should be the poster child for why starlets need a stylist — to coordinate this kind of perfection.

  • Pablo

She’s a woman now, when did we get so old? congrats kiernan, you look fabolous

  • Michelle Gennari

Trey adorbs – as usual. Love this kid.

  • Nika E

    Stinkin cute!
