Kate Mara in Prada at the “House of Cards” Season 2 LA Screening

Posted on February 14, 2014

Much as we love ourselves some Prada, the spring collection is not translating well on the red carpet.

Kate Mara attends Netflix’s “House of Cards” Season 2 Special Screening at Directors Guild Of America in Los Angeles, California in a Prada dress from the Spring 2014 collection.

It’s just too much dress for pictures. Visually, it’s muddy and overwhelming at the same time. And it’s shapeless to boot.

We had to laugh when we saw the hair. It’s one of those things that we, as penis’d fashion commenters are never going to get, experience tells us. But we’d be surprised if it doesn’t have its defenders. We think there’s a certain class of style-oriented lady who just goes weak in the knees over any sort of tricky hairstyle. So we’re asking y’all informally:

Kate Mara’s Tricky Hair: YEA or NAY?

We’re not gonna “IN or OUT?” the dress, because it’s not up for debate, as far as we’re concerned. That’s some fug.

Nay on the hair. I don’t like when hair shows its work like that.

    • jspark

But it doesn’t show from the front. Her ears cover them. It’s an IN for me! Unique and can be reproduced with the materials I have at home.

  • Emily Dagger

Me reading this: “Well it’s not so ba — OH MY GOD, GLITTERY FIDEL CASTRO IS WEARING HER BOOBS AS A HAT.”

And let’s please not make showing bobby pins a thing. No no. This cannot be rewarded. Nay.

    • Lucía Gavello

I immediately thought of Rashida Jones’ dress. Someone at the house of Prada HATES BOOBS.

      • Aurumgirl

Someone at the house of Prada is playing a big, fat joke on celebrities!

    • embers618

Yes. What is going on with Prada and the armpit cups? And the awkward proportions?
Looks like it might be nice from the back, though. Maybe we could get rid of the front half and use the back as an inspiration for a new dress.

    • lundibleu

You win the internet today! That’s such a perfect description that I can’t stop sniggering over it.

    • Nicholas

I was thinking he took a trip to Disneyland.

    • scoobynacks

The showing of bobby pins makes it look like you ran away from your hairdresser before they were finished. This should never become a thing. I refuse. I’ll never do it, I don’t care if it’s on every runway and every magazine cover. I’ll never ever do it.

That dress is the red carpet equivalent of an ugly Christmas sweater.

      • FrigidDiva

100% agree. It looks like the hair was pinned down so that they could get it to lie flat and then forgot to take out the pins. To me it’s as bad as startlets having white circles under the eyes from finishing powder not getting brushed away before they step out onto the red carpet.

    • H2olovngrl

I agree! Bobby pins are NOT a visual aid.

  • Diesel von Trapp

It’s not so much yea or nay on the hair it’s like what and why?

    • Sobaika

It looks like something I would’ve found cute in the seventh grade.

      • Wendi126

        This

  • rarero

Nay! This is a FMO; For Models Only dress and she simply doesn’t make it work

  • trisker

OUT on the hair. Pinterest bobby pins. And the dress! What was Miuccia thinking?

  • another_laura

My first look was “oh wow, is she expecting”? The pattern on the embellishments made her belly appear rounded from the front. The cutout, all of it, bleh, that is an ugly dress.

But you didn’t ask that. NAY on the hair, let’s nip this one in the bud, shall we, BKs?

    • Tracy_Flick

I totally agree. I gasped at the fabulousness of her maternity wear. Something about the design of the front creates a very convincing optical illusion.

As for the hair, NAY. It looks like the kind of thing moms torture little girls with for holidays.

      • Eric Stott

At first glance I thought “What is she holding in front of the….OMFG!” It really does look as if she’s trying to hide some of the dress, but that boob window undoes everything.

  • gabbilevy

    Nay. Nay. Nay.

  • clairehj7

That dress is insanse and makes her body look bizarre. The hair is too complicated and weird.

  • madeofcarbon

the first picture was really confusing, i thought she was holding some kind of box or glittery envelope in front of herself.

    • Eric Stott

YES! I thought she was holding something too!

  • Danielle

    Um…. I’m… Just… Nay.

  • crash1212

NAY and even though you didn’t ask OUT. This is just awful from the top of her head to the naked shoes. Blech.

    • Sarah

(Shoes with sticker on bottom, too. Oof)

  • @Biting Panda

    Nay. All of it. Nay.

  • karena10

Absolutely nay to the booby pins. I have nothing against tricky hair but not with using plain ugly booby pins.

    • KinoEye

Haha! in the context of this cleavage-bearing dress, I must say I love booby pins. Much better than bobby pins. :-)

  • Sally Spannagle

her head looks like a bare skeleton

    • FrigidDiva

Agreed. I don’t think that hair color does her any favors in combination with her make up either. I think the blonde is cute, but I really wish they’d stop doing her whole face in matching neutral tones. It just makes her look really odd.

  • Bexxx

Every single thing about this is so terrible that I am personally offended.

  • KinoEye

The hair is stupid. The dress is chopping up her body into the most unattractive shape, which is also stupid. And does every brunette have to go blonde at least once to stay in the entertainment world, whether or not it suits them?

Check out that guy in the first picture on the right. He feels the same way we all do — he’s had enough of this nonsense.

  • megawatt

Nay. I hated it even before I saw the bobby pins, and those ends need a hot oil treatment.

  • boweryboy

Nay to the hair. The exposed bobby pins takes it immediately into Trashville. All she needs is some dirty flipflops, daisy dukes, and a stained tanktop.
And the dress is a huge nay as well. I seriously thought she was pregnant in the first two pictures. I would not mind the dress so much if the cleavage cutout wasn’t there.

    • Glam Dixie

      Myrtle Manor. That is all.

  • Glam Dixie

I did a straight gasp of horror at her hair. Nay, to all of it!

  • hughman

It’s like a tiny little picket fence for her hair.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

      Or possibly a thatched roof?

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

Nay. Its always awful when the tips are brushed upwards like that. Also, shitty color

  • random_poster

It wasn’t until I scrolled down far enough in the first picture that I realized she’s wearing a dress. I was wondering why she was holding up a color-coordinated sign in front of her boobs.

Will this now be referred to as Pinterest Hair?

    Oh, and NAY.

  • Sofia Bentivoglio

i’d like to see this dress on the model. it is so obviously GTNYD. from the front it obscures her shape and makes her look preggers in the first pic. the greens are nice on her, though.

    • DeTrop

      I thought pregnant too.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Points for trying, but HELL no, you can see that’s an OUT from orbit.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Instantly, viscerally, and without question, it’s a NAY on the bobby pins. Talk about “PIN”-terest hair!

    • ShaoLinKitten

OMG yes! Total Pinterest hair. Nailed it.

  • mjude

    NAY. I don’t get it

  • amanda d

I don’t understand how you look in the mirror and think a “boob frame” is a good look. Can’t comment on the hair. I have erased it from my memory.

  • Sarah

Nay. Hairdos should not call to mind lawn and garden departments. Decorative fencing is not for the dome. Expandable flowerbed surrounds do not a cute headsuit make. Exposed bobby pins are the devil’s plaything. NAY NAY NAY.

  • Myra Amler

The dress is totally ill fitting. The only explanation for this is she didn’t look in a mirror before leaving her house. As for the hair….I am at a loss.

  • Dam_Angel

Oh! How fun and clever! Yea!

  • http://vispreeve.tumblr.com/ Den Milano

Kate Mara’s Tricky Hair: NAY. Prada as a conceptual art: YAY. Prada as a RTW clothes: NAY.

  • SarahVN

Nay, ugh. I actually kind of like the styling of the hair – I think the pins are kind of cool – but that very dark on top/very light on bottom, with her ears being the dividing line, is horrendous.

  • lunchcoma

Is Kate Mara a vampire? Being unable to see her reflection is the only way I can explain her leaving the house with that boobage and those bobby pins.

  • Pennymac

Well,if Prada’s intention to make beautiful Kate Mara look bizarre and misshapen, (which she obviously is not), then they succeeded. And I suppose the bizarre and misshapen hair makes it a theme?

  • Missy

Nay, Pinterest hair, nay, nay, nay.

  • Cheryl

I’m okay with the hair, but I hate the boob window. Her sister is so artsy cool, she’s just boring.

  • nannypoo

Silly, head to toe. I do like the color of her lipstick.

  • bellafigura1

Nay. My hair does exactly that with no hardware. Is she pregnant? Or is it just billowy?

  • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

Nay. So much nay to the hair. And the dress which is beyond awful. It’s extremely unflattering to her boobs and makes her look like a bedazzled rectangle.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

    It’s visible bobby pins. NO.

  • Slanted & Enchanted

YEA to the hair. Not my personal style, but I think it looks cool. Actually, it would be cooler if the pins were some color other than black, but I suppose she was trying to match the dress and also choose a color that contrasts with her hair, leaving very few options. I suspect visible bobby pins are either having or about to have a moment. My aunt (who is absolutely the most stylish person evah – seriously, I have STORIES about her younger and wilder days, dating professional athletes and partying with movie stars) just bought me a set of bobby pins in a range of metallic colors.

    • kimmeister

I was thinking that the black bobby pins might actually work on someone with black hair (like me.) I’ll give her points for it being something I’ve never seen before. But, as is, it sort of looks like Charlie Brown’s T shirt.

    • MilaXX

Yeah I’ve seen tutorials on Popsugar & Glamour so I think it’s a microtrend that’s moved beyond pinterest.

  • Dagney

    well, no

  • JulieTy

The bobby pins are . . . OK (although pretty ones would have worked better) . . . but the two-tone hair with the demarcation line right where the bobby pins sit make this a full-on NAY for this BK.

  • Adrianna Grężak

WHAT THE FUCK. One of the worst dresses I’ve seen

  • nowlo

Yea to the hair, but not with such a visually tricky dress.

  • E. D.

That dress is no good. And I say HELL NO to the hair.

  • Sara__B

Nay to the hair. Not even if the bobby pins were actual jewelry instead of plain old bobby pins. (Nay to the dress, too. It’s just plain ugly.)

  • teensmom99

Is there another answer on the hair–like “can see why she did it and it’s fun and stupid at the same time.”

  • TRSTL

    Top to bottom, HELL NO!

  • LuluinLaLa

Nay. Aside from the fact that I imagine you couldn’t move your head without ruining the effect, I’ve never understood bobby pins as a style statement. To me, they are utilitarian and supposed to be hidden, or mostly hidden, to create that perfect hairdo. They’re not supposed to be decorative.

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind the decorative ones with rhinestones or flowers on them. but certainly not an entire head full and especially not just plain ones.

  • ChelseaNH

That dress is just — she looks malformed.

  • butterflysunita

This is a GGHAJSO. Girl, go home and just start over. Nay on both dress and hair.

  • http://stylishsass.blogspot.com/ Terri Smith

Her dress and hair are terrible. Can we talk about House of Cards instead?

    • MilaXX

I haven’t started watching yet. I think I’ll binge on that tomorrow.

  • marlie

The hair says “they forgot to take the bobby pins out,” and the dress says “BOOBS.” Both waaaaay OUT.

  • Sunraya

The hair is horrible! I just watched the first HOuse of Cards and her hair looked. So much nicer in the show!

  • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

Nay on (yikes) dress, nay on hair.

  • MilaXX

That hair is a NAY! for me. It’s one of those Pinterest trends that make no sense to me. I’ve seen more than a few articles on how to use plain bobby pins as decoration. I hope that hair color was for a role because her hair looks positively fried. That dress is a variation of the fug that Rashida Jones wore. The only positive I have is that her face looks nice. It’s a nice semi neutral face with enough color to add some depth.

    • decormaven

If bobby pinned hair is a Pinterest trend, I hope the next one is Toni rod rolls. Vintage and current – not!

  • DaringMiss

Hair is a Yeah for me…or more accurately, a yeah for my 17 year old stepdaughter. I would look ridiculous in that style!

  • schadenfreudelicious

that is quite the display of booby… i mean bobby pins…NAY

  • elirt

    Nay, big time!

  • kittywhumpus

The hair is Carrie Bradshaw circa 2003, and it’s just too precise to be effective, especially with that much happening on the yoke of the dress.

  • Kristina Sadowski

Nay. It looks like her hair is wearing braces.

  • Suse

I love this dress, except for the horrid cut-out between the boobs thing. When are designers going to cease and desist ruining dresses with stupid necklines and ridiculous bodice holes? Nay for dress and hair silliness.

  • Malibufire

    Feh x 2

  • demidaemon

    EEK. That’s for the dress.

Her head styling is the only thing saving this look from total fugdom. So YEA for the hair.

  • anyalama

The idea for the hair is kind of fun, but the reality of it is just NAY. It might look kind of cool on really long hair, but her hair looks a bit dry and unhealthy here.

  • VioletFem

NAY. It works from the front, but it is a disaster in the back.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m down with the hair. Love a good bobby pin. YEA to the hair! Meanwhile, that dress… That’s gonna make the year-end worst list, isn’t it?

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Nay, bobby pins are not attractive and should not be seen. And on a red carpet yet, shame.

  • Betsy

    Ugly hair

  • StarburstLady

I like the concept, but I think it’d look better with flashier bobby pins. If you’re gonna make ‘em the main event, might as well make sure it reads as intentional.

  • elzatelzabelz

The dress is truly terrible and that hair is NO. So cloying and pretentious and, NO.

  • Rhonda Shore

I can’t get past how ugly the dress is. The hair is meh. With a fabulous dress I might have liked it.

  • SewingSiren

The dress would be fine IF it didn’t have that horrid keyhole. The hair is Rihanna influenced. I actually like it.

  • msdamselfly

That dress is so horrible it’s casting shade on anything in its path.

  • Lori

The hair is a NAY. All those pins are just annoying and kind of dumb. The rest of the outfit goes with the hair, which is obviously not a compliment.

  • mollymalone

Hair: Yay! Dunno why but I really kinda like it. Fresh and new.

  • GeoDiva

That dress is a nightmare! The hair is cute if you are 15 or younger.

  • cmb92191

Boob window and crap ass hair… reminds me of styling Barbie dolls in the 70′s.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

the dress is not shapeless, it’s shaped like a barrel! combine that with the peep show cleavage, and you get cray cray. are the bobby pins supposed to be ironic? because i am just not in on the joke. so…….no. NONONONO NO! nice eye makeup though…

  • ThesisMonkey

tricky hair: yea. Kate’s tricky hair: NAY to the NAY.

  • paintedfish

if the bobby pins are gonna show, then they better be pretty and not look like they were fished out of the bathroom junk drawer. also, that dress looks so Star Trek Next Generation, and not in a good way.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1234087433 Jen Freeman

Totally fug hair. Plus when she inevitably misses one or twelve of those pins on her drunken slog to bed, she’ll regret it in the morning.

  • flamingoNW

    Fug on all fronts.

  • Laura Renee

    YEA for the hair!

  • quiltrx

NAY. I hate absolutely everything about this.
I’m not into visible bobby pins anyway, and especially not a pack of cheap Goody ones from the drugstore. And whatever this shitty color job is that she has going on (it doesn’t even deserve the “ombre” moniker) is making it SO much worse. The yellow mudflaps are a nightmare.

  • kat

you know, i saw the dress on Fashion Police and it looked much better than this while it was moving, but even then i didn’t like the way her boobi’s looked… in still-life, i like it even less. the boobi’s look bad, and the bobbies do as well, icksnay noay hetay airhay === wait, i don’t need to use f’in pig latin.
NO, NO, NO on the hair.

  • poorellensmith

I literally hate every single thing about this look, from the fugly, overwrought hair to the bland-ass make-up to that absolutely hiddy dress. This is a total fail.

  • Kate

the back is so pretty – maybe she’s wearing it backwards?

  • Claudia

Nay on the bonce. Its like a pitiful attempt at the Gidget…

  • Gatto Nero

Hate the boob window especially (on an otherwise hideous dress).
Cross-hatched visible hairpins? Are you kidding me right now?

  • AceOn6

No and no. The dress creates a belly and the hair is just weird.

  • http://anibundel.wordpress.com/ anibundel

I was horrified after the third pic to realize she wasn’t pregnant. The dress was just that shapeless.
Thumbs down on the hair. She looks like a bobbypin commercial.

  • CeeRich

OUT. OUT. OUT. Just say no to visible bobby pins.

  • SuzBald

The hair reminds me of the eyes in Coraline. I loved Coraline, but I do not like this hair. NAY.

  • pugluv

No to the dress, No to the hair. She must have owed her stylist a favor to agree to wear such an unflattering dress!

  • Reality TV Casting

yay on the hair kinda cool and edgy

  • Lilithcat

Good lord. Visible bobby pins belong with visible zippers – in the garbage can.

  • Lisa_Co

    Nay.

  • ellabob

Bobby pins showing – is she going to a gymnastics meet?

  • Jane Patterson-McGuire

Out. I think the concept is cool, but people ARE going to see the back of your head, so those pins should be blinged out to be an actual design element

  • Kaytee

NO, NO, NO (Which means OUT, OUT and OUT). I agree with Lilithcat that visible bobby pins are as attractive as visible zippers and should be banned.

  • Eric Stott

NO. Looks like something an obsessed child might do with a patient mother’s hair.

  • Kelly

No, the bobby pins just look silly — this is what you do to your hair on the mornings when you have weird bed-head cowlicks and no time to wash and re-dry: you stick everything down with pins and hope (usually futilely) for the best. You don’t go out of the house like that, though.

  • kittentoes

    Head to toe hate.

  • ankali

NAY on the hair, but only because I think it looks like shit from the front. The trickery doesn’t bother me.

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

Yay on the hair, it’s different so yay.
the dress may expain her story line.

  • Danielle West

    Nay. That’s just weird.

  • icm

nay to the hair, but it will be all over “pin-terest” with the usual ooh’s and ahhhs!

  • Emily Roach

The hair is out but more importantly THAT DRESS IS THE WORST!!! Oh god. Oh god. She’s so hot, why does….. why does this keep happening…

  • velomango

Yay on the hair. I like it. Know why? It’s something any fashion-conscious high school kid could look at and figure out how to do on his/her own. Bringing bobby-pin hair art to the masses is a good thing.

  • lilazander

I like her and her style so much, but the hair pins are just weird and the dress looks awkward in the bust area. So, NAY!

  • cmb92191

Once you see episode 1 on the new House of Cards season, this “might” make sense….

  • acevedob

    Yuck. NAY.

  • KayEmWhy

Oh dear. Nay on all fronts.

  • decormaven

Eyes are windows to the soul. This bodice cutout is a viaduct. Out.

  • Kirk_or_Picard

Someone mentioned below the hair is Carrie Bradshaw circa 2003, but I think it is literally from the episode that she goes to the movies with Berger on their first date. Pulled directly from that episode. First comment on the site to say that.

  • Bethley

    Nay! awful.

  • Jacob Bowen

That dress looks like she wrapped a blanket over the top of her dress because she was too cold!

  • MandyM

No thank you on the hair. He’ll to the no on the dress!

  • Aidan B

OUT. They do make blonde-colored bobby pins, you know. This is just laziness.

  • guest2visits

Nay. Too bad; I like the greens, I like the sequins, I like the art. But it’s 2 different dresses unattractively spliced together.
Nay on the many pins. I just don’t like the pins, something else might have been used to create a look.

  • Columbinia

Where’s the rest of it? No, not the dress, the rest of the hair concept, where’s the actual hair ornament? Surely that black crossed bobby pin deal is meant to support some fabulous jeweled piece or lovely hair accessory. No? The woven bobby pins are the whole show?

    Nay vote.

  • Pablo

I seriously don’t understand how she can look so good in the show and look like that in real life, it’s like a different person

  • Haley Buchanan

Blandly pretty in the front, barbed-wire bobby pin skeleton in the back? That’s a big old NAY.

  • AzSportsGirl

Nay on the hair. Exposed bobby pins are like exposed seams and zippers – we *know* the construction is there but I don’t wanna see it.

  • Garcia Loca

    OUT. Jesus Christ.

  • JulieK

NAY on the hair. And full agreement about the fug dress. It does awful things to her cute figure.

  • lobsterlen

NAY. exposed bobby pins + boob window= NAY every fucking time.

  • jen

Nay. The hair is so, so bad.

  • Ann VerWiebe

That is really a dress that screams, “Here are my boobs!”

  • EEKstl

    Oh gawd. Just…no.

  • twocee

I’m late to the party but I hated this entire thing (including the hair) so much I had to chime in. NO to everything.

  • Synnamin

    NAY. that’s all fug.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

    OUT.

But her eye make-up is trés chic.

  • jw_ny

That dress is some serious fug, but I like it better than all those bobby pins in her hair. so…Nay!

  • lifeisastory

I don’t understand anything about this.

  • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

It’s Pinterest hair. Blech. Nay to the hair!

  • Madam Von Sassypants

NAY to both hair and dress.
The only upside to that dress is that you could nurse a baby so easily with that boob window.

  • CatherineRhodes

Nay on both. What a mess.

  • CatherineRhodes

Plus mad about House of Cards Season 2 — never have I done such a big gasp as I did at the end of the first episode.

  • Clash D

I wanted to comment on how terrible this dress looks on her but got distracted by how bad the hair looks.

Ok. I give up. They’re both equally bad.

  • kerryev

That bodice led to a scroll-down recoil.

  • Bradio311

What am I looking at?! There’s just no good place to rest your eyes!

  • Maya

    no way on the hair

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Nay on the hair and the dress and pretty much the whole look.

  • lesmaha

    Nay.
