It’s pretty and I’m sure it’s venue appropriate, but it feels very safe and maybe a tiny bit mature. I feel like this would be an atta girl for Meryl Streep, but on Julia it’s just okay.

    • Jackie4g

I looked with trepidation, and was relieved to see something age appropriate. It’s in the eye of the beholder.

  • I would have gone with red shoes and black purse, myself.

    • decormaven

Yes! Some red shoes would really make this sing!

    • kimmeister

At least her feet wouldn’t have blended into the carpet like they did!

      • Yes! It seems like something the stylists should be told – there will be x backdrop and y carpet. So they can avoid black shoes on a black carpet and red shoes on a red carpet.

        • kimmeister

That “floating foot stumps” look is always disturbing!

  • @Biting Panda

    Dear JLD,

Thank you for your hilarity. Thank you for your commitment to being fashionable. But thank you, most of all, for your beautiful face, and for having the courage to let it look it’s absolute best. That is to say, well maintained, yet showing signs of wisdom, laughter, and life’s experiences. It can’t be an easy choice, when ageism is rampant in your chosen field of work. Great dermatology beats out risky surgery, any day of the week.

    An awed Bitter Kitten.

    • Constant Reader

I had something snarky to say regarding PTA luncheons, but you knocked it out of the park with this post. Why should I quibble when the more egregious sin of messing with a perfectly pretty face that is no longer 30 years old is for once not being committed? She does look lovely.

      • shirab

So happy to see her gorgeous and real face. But as someone who is slowly but surely letting gray hair take over, I am waiting (in vain, I suspect) for a leading lady or two to go with her natural hair color. Jamie Lee Curtis is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Biting Panda: changing minds, changing lives.

        • @Biting Panda

          You’re so silly : )

    • SRQkitten

Please add this bitter kitten to the Biting Panda fan club!

    • Daisy77

      Amen Biting Panda. Amen.

    • Nancer

Yes, I will definitely sign off on this too! :]

    • SugarSnap108

      Co-signed (please).

  • Karen Belgrad

It makes me sad that she is dressing “age appropriate”. She invented butt cleavage on the red carpet!

  • ashtangajunkie

JLD always looks good. This is no exception.

  • Patrick Cleary

  • conniemd

I love the dress. She looks great. Hem could be above the knee though, it would make it look less age appropriate. I think it’s simple and elegant.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I agree. Shorten the hem and it is a WERQ.

  • jilly_d

I would have appreciated a metallic bag instead of the red, but girl looks good. Love that she’s actually wearing her own face, and wearing it well.

  • marlie

I like this. A simple, flattering silhouette with some visual interest. She looks great!

  • formerlyAnon

Adorably cute grown up with money (or free clothes). Not a lot of added “hey! I’m famous!” value, but thoroughly respectable.

    • marlie

That seems to generally be her thing, even on the red carpet. And while crazy, out-there stuff is what’s fun to talk about here, it’s still nice to see someone who almost always wears something flattering and attractive, even if it’s a little less “look at meeeee!”

  • Tracy_Flick

Pretty. Love the belt. It’s a bit sedate, but in a world of illusion netting and belly skin, it’s a bit refreshing.

  • Jessica Freeman

A great look for her. Really love that dress.

  • filmcricket

“Gala” never says daytime to me, but I presume this was a daytime event, in which case, she looks safe but great.

    • kimmeister

Totally! I love the outfit but it looks more “Hollywood luncheon” than gala.

  • j regan p

Fabulous. I can’t find a single flaw. (I’ll always love ‘Elaine’ or ‘Christine’, no matter what she does or wears.) HUGE fan.

  • bertkeeter

LUV it! Would prefer a strappy shoe!

  • Erica

Every time I see her, I think, “she’s so pretty.” Also, nice arms.

  • alyce1213

Love the dress on her — actually I can’t tell if it’s a dress with fitted peplum or two pieces. Love the red detail at the waist.
I kind of prefer the shorter hem like on the model, but it’s a quibble.
Her face has always been so expressive, and that smile!

  • Sally Spannagle

She is so beautiful. Could have kicked the hem up juuust a little bit.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

  • Sharon Weiner

It’s too long on her, hitting in the dowdy spot. That’s why it looks so mature!

  • Nancer

She looks great, but I have quibbles. Quibbles I say! It looks like she needs a better bra under that, and the hem could come up just a tad. Like maybe to right under her knee, instead of a few inches below. However, that is one great smile and I think the dress overall is beautiful.

  • frannyprof

    This look ages her.

  • SugarSnap108

I’d shorten the hem a little, do a sassy shoe and ditch that clutch. But those are nitpicks — she looks great.

  • I think she looks great!

  • KinoEye

Not bad. My main quibble here is the name of this event: Unite4:Humanity Gala? Unless there’s some meaning behind using the letter 4 instead of just spelling it, and adding the unnecessary colon, that’s straight-up stupid.

    • marlie

A kitten after my own heart. I hate sh!t like that.

      • KinoEye

It makes me irrationally angry. I’ll assume this event is probably to gather donations and support for a very worthy cause, and spelling the name like that makes it seem as if the organizers don’t take it very seriously. So why should anyone else? Textspeak and abbreviations have their time and place, which is not at a high-profile charity event.

        • Jacob Bowen

I also think it gives some (false) validity to the 10-18 year olds who are learning grammar and write “u” and “ur” on their homework and on in class assignments…it is EXTREMELY frustrating!

          • demidaemon

Yeah, no shit. This trend needs to be killed dead, set on fire, and then replaced with a beautiful vision of proper English grammar in a couture gown.

  • Pablo

I think she would look better with shorter hair, it kinda looks too wiggy for me now

    • good call on the hair. Wiggy is it exactly. I was trying to figure out why it wasn’t working for me even though it’s not outright objectionable

  • jen

This dress has a very Project Runway for Macy’s Mother of the Bride collection feel to me. Julia, you are SO MUCH better than this girl!

  • I like the dress, as it plays directly to my age bracket, just wish Julia’s was a tiny bit shorter.

  • megohd

    love, love love her.

    Bad skirt length.

  • lobsterlen

This looks like the kind of dress ladies wear to a Junior League luncheon.
Julia is dressed more stylish on VEEP. Her wardrobe on that show hits all the right notes and I wish more female politicians dressed like that character. What Julia is wearing here is almost like something they would wear in reality. Its not bad but kind of frumpy.

  • Danielle

The neckline is aging her, but her face is still as radiant as ever. Go ‘head girl.

  • jw_ny

The dress style/shape is standard JLD, but it works for her…she looks good. I love the graphic and red band…flatters her figure/waist. The skirt length could be a few inches shorter, and not a matchy clutch…silvery/metallic.

Am I seeing a seam on her head between her natural hair and a fall/wig? Something up there doesn’t seem well blended…

  • EEKstl

I think it’s too big and wish the skirt were a skosh shorter. Those two off elements are making it dowdy on her.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I love how those black flowers are on top of the red belt, takes the dress up a notch for me.

  • nowlo

Needs to be taken in a bit at the sides, but a good overall look for her.

  • Lilyana_F

She knows what’s working for her and she sticks to it. Cute dress.

  • boweryboy

She looks great. Love the dress. I wish she would try something different with her hair.

  • Gatto Nero

    A serviceable look.

  • mrspotts66

she looks beautiful. i should look so good.
adore the red accents, but agree that red shoes would have really popped.

  • French_Swede

It’s refreshing to see someone worth more than a billion dollars who has taste, and doesn’t overdo it with clothes, makeup and/or plastic surgery.
    She looks terrific.

  • Stefan Hurray

She can do no wrong in my eyes -she looks totally beautiful. Of course -she’s a freaking heiress and professional actor so of course she looks great.

  • quiltrx

    LOVE THIS (and her)

  • RuthGo

I feel like I’ve seen this dress at Macy’s a dozen times.

  • Sunraya

Julia decided to wear the dress Grandma brought home from Florida! This reminds me of those weird prints people used to wear in the tropics. I really don’t like it.

  • OffToSeeHim

She’s an heiress? She’s worth a billion dollars? How am I the only one who doesn’t know this?
