IN or OUT: Cate Blanchett in Prada at the 2014 Oscars Nominees Luncheon

Posted on February 11, 2014

What do we think?

“Blue Jasmine” star Cate Blanchett attends the 86th Oscars Nominees Luncheon in Beverly Hills, California in Prada.

Prada Fall 2013 Collection

And by that we mean “What do YOU think,” because we’ve got a break in our fashionating, which means we get to put our eating pants on. Discuss amongst yourselves. We’ll say this: she can rock a silver like no one but Tilda, but we really hate the hem. And it looks a little too “sexy spacesuit.”

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! Ground Control to Major Cate!

OUT! Mmmm. Baked potato.

The Kittens had a hard time working up a firm opinion on Elizabeth Banks’ Hot Wheels dress, but the vote came down on the side of IN. Just barely.

I suppose that the silver is less expected than the runway gold, but I can’t help but think I’d like it better in the gold.
    And with a straight hem.
I think this needed accessories that it didn’t get, something colorful and textured to draw attention from the broad swaths of shiny silver.

  • Danielle

    Judy Jetson realness

  • MilaXX

I think the dress is okay, but those aren’t the best shoes to pair with it. I also understand she wanted to be understated considering she is wearing a silver leather dress, but she needs some jewelry. Earring, a bracelet or a ring of some sort.

    • DinaSews

Do you think it’s leather? It looks like the silver spandex I used for some costumes in 2004. OUT.

      • MilaXX

Yeah it looks like leather to me.

  • thecitysleeps

Ugh, why ruin a perfectly cool dress with that shitty hemline? I’m imagining that dress as a gown and it looks amazing in my head. Love the shoes. So, I’m confused. Out?

    • Vickiefantastico

Huh. I’m imagining it hitting above the knee, and it looks gorgeous that way. So I guess I’m OUT too.

    • Tatiana Luján

That dress as a gown would be amazing.

      • Aurumgirl

And this way it just kind of makes her look like she ran into a misfortune. The poor model in the gold version looks like she’s drunk and about to slip out of her clothes. It just seems to fail everyone.

    • Aurumgirl

It’s just a bad dress. I have to wonder who is dressing Cate these days, lately she’s had a lot more misses than hits.

  • Eovaai

    OUT. Baked potato indeed.

  • LaSylphide

Out. Not a good dress, and kind of awful on her.

  • bertkeeter

Hem doesn’t bother me…it’s that pointless seaiming aroung waist and ugly half assed zipper detail…WHY? …Looks poorly executed. Expect WAY more from Prada! Oh…and those “Ladylike shoes”? OY!

  • boweryboy

OUT. Pass the butter and sour cream, please.

  • @Biting Panda

It’s what Sandra Bullock would wear if she wanted to go the Amy Adams route of role reference dressing.

  • KinoEye

Mmm. Baked potato. The hem upsets me. Looks cheap. No, Cate. OUT.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

It’s missing like a million bits, bobs and style nuances. I want to reach into the pic and pull the zip down a couple of inches. Someone UNDO her.

My mother made me a Halloween space girl costume completely from aluminum foil when I was a kid. I still wish I could add a belt and a statement necklace when I look back.

That’s an OUT from the Irish jury.

  • alyce1213

OUT. Baked potato with shiny headlights.

  • tvmovielover

She looks okay but hate it in silver (saw it on another website and just knew it would be here too). Half in and half out but agree that gold may have been a better choice for her. Also on the edge about the hem. What is wrong with regular hems?

  • andi56

KinoEye has hit the target! Yes, ma’am!

  • rissa42210

Out. Sorry, Cate. I want to like it, I really do. I love the idea of a space dress. I hate the zipper, and while that is a matter of personal preference, I don’t think anyone could say that the bodice is doing her any favors. The shoes also don’t work for me – they look like an afterthought. Her head is unobjectionable, but where are the accessories? The hem is murdering me. I think I’ve purchased a skirt hemmed like that at Charlotte Russe when I was 16 and ever so misguided. Cate wants you to believe this is working, and she is nearly pulling this off on poise alone, but it’s just not. No minimalist, torn-hem, space cadet Cate for me, thanks.

  • Daisy Walker

Due to my love for Queen Cate, I shall abstain from voting.

    • sagecreek

I think a lot of BKs joined you on this.

    • Spreecord

I’m giving it an IN because unless she shows up wearing a Jennifer Lawrence skindress, I just can’t fault anything she does.

    • ThesisMonkey

was about to type the same thing

    • marlie

See, due to my love for Cate, I expect so much more from her, and I know she can do so much better!

  • lamamu

IN, but only for her ability to wear it like a boss.

    • AudreysMom

true. I didn’t like it on first glance but the more I looked at it- on her – the more it went from out to IN.

  • pookiesmom

Nope, sorry, nu uh. The top half looks ok, but the bottom half is horrible. OUT.

    • Trent

THIS. That hem is wrinkled, unflattering and cheap-looking. And accessories are sorely needed. OUT.

  • In_Stitches

The front zipper coupled with the silver makes me think adult video awards. Granted, she’d be the classiest woman there, ready to pick up her lifetime achievement award, but I think she can do better. OUT.

  • Murtada

IN she’s rocking it… it’s all in the attitude…. she looks a billion bucks

  • sagecreek

Even when you look like CB, attitude goes a long way, and she doesn’t have it here — she is sad. Appropriately so. But that makes this an out…she just ain’t selling it.

    • Tatiana Luján

She doesn’t seem to have it on this set of pictures, but she does have it on the IMDB pictures.

  • another_laura

This should be great. The silver? Great. The waist seams and stuff? Super. Hair? Great. I’ll forgive the no earrings. But from the hips down it’s a failure; it droops and has the stupid wonky hem. Shoes are a shame. And it’s most def not for a lunch. I can’t believe it, but I’m giving it an Out. Standards must be observed, and we need more from our Queen Cate.

  • kimmeister

IN, even though I hate the hem, because she’s making silver leather work in a way that I wouldn’t have though possible. I gasped at the first picture (that only came down to her knee).

  • Evan

IN. She’s making it work even though the hem isn’t my favorite.

  • María José Benites Peralta

IN. I hate how it looks on the runway but she somehow makes it work. It fits her perfectly and even I would prefer mor edgy shoes, it is a lovely look overall. And for me the best from this otherwise boring oscar luncheon (at least fashion wise).

  • trisker

IN — Cate’s one of the few who can wear this!

  • gdougs

    The gold earrings strike again!

  • Dagney

um….maybe……add a belt? I don’t hate it, but it’s missing something. At the risk of being too much, Im thinking….I would add more sparkle. I mean, if you’re going silver lame’ dress, GO there. Or, bitch up the bodily accessories; red nails, red lips. Or the hair! Weirder hair.

  • jjtxgrrl

In!! She looks amazing. Best use of the odd hemline look that Ive seen. Love that its both modern and soft.

    Out. On shoes.

  • Synnamin

In? It’s ok. It’s not really quite up to Cate standards, but it’s fine on its own

  • Cate is wearing this dress as well as anyone can, but it’s still a Silver Convention kind of fail. Lower case out.

  • ModernDowager

IN. Love the shoes, love the weird hem. Could have done with a bracelet or earrings

  • Anique

I wore booty shorts exactly the same material last Halloween. I was a sexy biker.

    Ergo, IN.

  • par3182

She joked that she made it herself; I’m tempted to believe her.

  • helloise

  • trvra

Am I the only one who thinks it is too much for a luncheon?

  • YoungSally

Captain Kirk (or Commander Riker for that matter) to the bridge.

    • Constant Reader

I’m more of a Captain Picard girl, but I get what you mean. 🙂

      • YoungSally

I’d say I am too (I keep hoping to see him on the street in NYC) — but I couldn’t come up with his name yesterday.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • schadenfreudelicious

I loves me some Cate but I just want her to be wearing a matching tinfoil hat, so on that basis I must defer to OUT

  • Bethany Fairbrother

I kind of think Silver is not as kind to her as gold. She looks best in warm tones.

  • SugarSnap108

The prettiest girl at the NASA prom.

  • Musicologie

OUT. The top half has that zipper that makes it too space suit-y, and the bottom half is pulling in all the wrong directions.

  • kittenwithaquip

My first thought? “Oh I can’t even with these fucking asymmetrical hems anymore!” My second thought was that she must have gotten some schmutz on her first outfit pick, because this seems below the usual Cate Standard. I’m sorry to say, OUT.

  • appliquer

  • emoryivy

    Luh. In.

  • Call me Bee

Hehehe…baked potato. Anyhoo–Cate really can wear anything and look awesome. I like it. IN. It is certainly an improvement from the runway. That is awful.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

That founce is weird with the rest of it so streamlined.

  • Garcia Loca

OUT. No one rocks silver like Goopie did in Calvin Klein. (I know. I hate myself for saying that too.)

  • Verascity

The hem and shoes ruin the entire look. I’ve also just seriously soured on her lately, so… eh.

  • Pennymac

I think its unexpected and somewhat badass. In.

  • Leah Elzinga

I can’t believe I’m saying this about a tin foil dress but… kind of blah, eh? OUT.

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

I would have to feel the material to really judge. It looks comfortable and appropriate..maybe a non metallic cuff or something, anything in the way of jewelry?

  • belfebe

    OUT. Top, yay. Bottom, Boooo.

  • Tracy_Flick

I can’t give anything other than an IN to a leather dress that fits and flatters so well. However. Jiffy pop, space blanket, Rosie from the Jetsons, etc. etc. Also, wrong shoes.

  • OUT. It looks like a creation I once made for a Barbie from foil.

  • Samantha

So IN! I want this dress…

  • Hermione

Out, because of the hem, and because she wanted to wear the gold but would have looked too much like an Oscar statuette and she wanted to be more subtle, so she picked the silver–but she still looks like the statuette

  • SierraDelta

OUT. It looks like it’s made out of recycled tin foil.

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

  • lalahartma

    Sorry, Cate. Out.

  • Tlazolteotl

OUT. The fabric looks like it’s the foam-backed stuff that cheap Halloween costumes are made of.

  • Eve Farren Farber

    Aluminum foil.

  • Scimommy

Oh, it’s one of those “in order to win the Oscar you must BECOME the Oscar” looks. Which could be fine, but this one isn’t working on her, so OUT.

  • Lori

Out. A little too “non-stick foil.” Sorry, Cate.

  • TigerLaverada

She makes an ugly dress look good if anyone can, but it’s still an ugly dress. OUT.

  • lunchcoma

In. I don’t like the hemline, either, but the rest of the dress is fine and I think the simple styling was necessary given the circumstances.

  • jw_ny

I like the entire look..head to toe. Wouldn’t change a thing, except perhaps add a statement ring or bangle.

  • MissusBee

    Frankendress in Space. Out.

Isn’t there supposedly a thing where Oscar nominees start wearing shiny statuesque getup, either by way of subliminal advertising or a sort of ‘want the Oscar, be the Oscar’ mentality?

Does this also explain (not that it needs explaining) Madame Leto’s gold jacket?

  • kmk05

GALADRIEL IN SPACE! I vote nay to the shoes, yay to everything else. So…I’m guessing I abstain.

  • Carly Clement

IN!!!! absolutly stunning! She makes this dress look expensive and chic! I love that neckline and the way it sits on her buddy! I think a straight skirt would have been a bit more flattering but those shoes I cant sign off on with that dress… but she is really selling this dress!

  • Truthiness2U

Oh look, it’s the matte side of tin foil making the badly fitting, oddly designed, unflattering dress. Better than it being the shiny side? That’s all I’ve got. Terrible, and not worthy of Cate. And thus beyond OUT. Making Cate look bad? unforgivable.

  • a_liking

in. I only wish she had taken the sexy spacesuit theme even further.

  • Jewellery! Want her to add some jewellery. And, of course, IN. I love silver.

  • BobStPaul

Out, out, out. Even if the hem were done correctly it would still be an unattractive dress though the basic shape is quite nice.

  • teensmom99

IN. First of all, I have to confess that I don’t have the uncles’ aversion to “interesting” hems (I think it’s a genetic thing because my mom loved a fun hem). And second of all, this is not something that most people could work, but Cate can. It’s not a WERQ but it’s an IN since it’s a very Blanchett-y lunch thing.

  • Belvane

Mostly I think that everyone who stands in front of that backdrop looks like they have chopsticks coming out of their ears. (Cate makes that look work.)

  • somebody blonde

IN. The hem is stupid, but everything else looks good.

  • lillyvonschtupp

    Lost In Space swag

  • Anna

    She is titanium.

  • Cheryl

In, buuuuut I don’t like the hem either. Like far better in the silver, than the gold on the model.

    • Tatiana Luján

the gold dress doesn’t even look like it is made of leather.

  • AmeliaEve

OUT — too plain. Did all her accessories float off into antigravity?

  • ShaoLinKitten

It works for me. It looks ridiculous on the model but Cate is pulling it off.

  • altalinda

Out. That’s 3 fails in a row for Cate. The sky is falling.

  • snarkykitten

The background makes it look like she’s wearing dangly gold earrings. Looks pretty good actually

    • Gatto Nero

All the ladystars at this event have the dangly earrings.
I think the photogs are having fun with this.

  • saintebeuve

In! Not the best, but so very far from the worst.

  • Noah

God, what an awful dress. Unevenly proportioned tinfoil.

  • judybrowni

Cate makes it work better than the pissed off model, who had apparently been thrown into a cold swimming pool and insisted on donning a wool union suit before she’d stomp onto the runway.

But who can blame the model, if the “wet cat” look isn’t her fave?

  • Jangle57

It would be ok – not great, but ok – except for that stupid hem. OUT

  • Sabin

Out. She looks like a refugee from a Buggles video, circa 1980. And not in a good way.

  • MissMariRose

    out. space refugee

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Out. And now i want Jiffy Pop.

Do they still make Jiffy Pop?

  • Gatto Nero

In. Not my favorite look for her, but I think she pulls it off. Extra props for wearing it with such poise (as though she could do otherwise).

  • icm

From the fall 2014 Reynolds wrap collection i believe.

  • marlie

The hem of the dress is a serious needle-scratch, but though I sort of like the bodice and hips of the dress, but the fabric (leather?) looks a tad cheap to me. And those aren’t the shoes I would have chosen. Her hair and makeup are pretty, but boring. If this was anyone other than Cate, I’d give her a tepid “in,” but since we all know she can do SO much better, it’s an OUT from me.

  • Reality TV Casting

  • ThaliaMenninger

Out. Baked potato with a napkin hanging off her waist. If potatoes had waists.

  • The shoes are horrible, the hem is completely inexplicable, and would it have killed her to wear some earrings? Nothing fancy, maybe some big fat sapphire studs? As it is, only half a look. OUT.

    • Sara__B

I agree. She looks undone and unfinished.

  • d4divine

IN, but I think her feet hurt.

  • anneland

I thought: That’s totally IN… till I saw the hem and shoes. While I don’t like either, it’s still IN.

  • quiltrx

IN, but this needed some color and jewelry…so perhaps some colored-stone jewelry?

  • MannahattaMamma

for a LUNCH? And again–that background makes everyone look like they’ve got big sticks coming out of their heads. Weird, all the way around.

  • hmb

I really think the gold would have warmed her up. The hem…no. Would have been chicer nipped close with a smart vent. And no to the pumps. Out.

  • Sophia

this background is making everyone look like they just whipped their head around dramatically while wearing chandelier earrings

  • bailey

  • Caaro3

  • Snailstsichr

A very sad OUT. Cate deserves better than this sad little dress.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. It makes me think of a stage costume – not a literal one, but one of those “gestural” costumes you get in school dance recitals – for a futuristic Cinderella. Which is Not Remotely Fabulous on several different levels.

  • As far as a silver leather zipfront dress with an asymmetrical hem goes, it’s fine. But in absolute terms, it is in by the nearest margin. I prefer the slouchier styling on the runway version – gives it a bit of sword & sorcery coolness instead of sci/fi tweeness.

  • Samantha Irene

    Iove it! IN

  • MzzPants

  • bellafigura1

IN but would have been a WERQ with a straight hem just under knee.

  • E. D.

OUT – needs a bold ring and different shoes.

  • BrianaJC

OUT – fabric looks like a cheap halloween costume (although she is almost making it work)

  • ovarB

IN!! In comparing this with other CB carpet offerings it does grade lower on the scale, however, there is a certain lux that I love with the silver.

  • OUT. It’s not terrible, but it’s just not very good, either. And I expect more from La Blanchett.

  • Tatiana Luján

I think it’s cool and fun. IN.

  • BayTampaBay

  • Constant Reader

Who would have thought that much silver leather would be boring? But with those shoes and a lack of interesting accessories, that’s exactly what it is. Wake me when she switches to better shoes and a chunky textured cuff bracelet. Or something. OUT.

  • WittyCism

I’ll give this an IN. She definitely made the dress look loads better than on the runway.

  • Diego!

    I can’t but it’s an OUT ;(

  • Scott Cooper

There is always a moment when an actress passes a certain point and ages. This dress might have worked a year ago, but today it ages her. There are only a handful of people in history who can transcend the age barrier. I think in our generation the only one is Tilda Swinton. Everyone else is mortal.

  • megohd

  • MaryAlice Finley Davis

IN – I think she looks amazing.

  • Judy_S

IN. That is one delicious-looking baked potato.

  • StarburstLady

I like like it way more than I dislike it. The material looks oddly wrinkly, but that’s a pretty small complaint. IN.

  • Jessica Freeman

First thought: nope. Definite OUT for me. She must also have Lupita’s shoe person on the line because the shoes are a definite no.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I don’t mind the hem – I do like this look, very much.

  • carnush

IN because it’s CATE, also because it could be much, much worse on someone with less poise. The hem is weird but she’s rocking it.

  • Sam Erin

  • Michelle Gennari

    Very Star Trekian.

  • Clydette Wantland

    Hate it.

  • MoHub

The silver is gorgeous, but very Lost i n Space, and the hemline looks like a cutiing-and-sewing error. Afraid this gets a reluctant OUT.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

It’s slightly in, because I think it’s a fantastic dress but she’s massively understyled in it. If you’re going to wear a dress like that, go for broke.

  • OneRing

Out; my first thought was baked potato, too. The basic shape of the dress, minus the gimmicky hem, is amazing and it’s too bad the execution was so flawed. In a better fabric with a standard hem, this would be gorgeous.

  • mjude

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

I liked it better in the the gold, too, as well as the runway styling–a little sloppy made this look. Tightening it up for the RC is what made it look too spacesuit-y.

  • Nope. It’s an OUT. What I want to see is the top half turned into a jumpsuit being worn by Tilda.

  • jtabz

Out out out. Nevermind the hem. I can’t with the crinkliness.

  • gabbilevy

In, although I don’t much like the hem.

  • Janet B

    The skirt is overwhelming. OUT

I think the hem would look better on a shorter dress and a different woman.

  • Shawn EH

In. Love the dress, but needed more aggressive shoes and some jewelry. Under-styled.

  • conniemd

Out, I hate to say, but she needed some jewelry to keep this from looking too much like a space suit. Anything to break up all that silver like a belt. I have this wild idea of a blue and/or orange scarf belt with the silver to bring color and hard and soft.

  • melanie0866

  • Lisa_Co

  • Imasewsure

Puts the pole in pole dancing but I still say baked potato. OUT

  • In: love the dress, hate the shoes. I think the hem is what saves it from going space-suit for me. Then again, all of this is coming from a kitten with some disco-ball lookin’ Doc Martens in her cart on Amazon (and who got Ziggy Stardust on Zimbio’s David Bowie quiz.)

  • suzq

If she wanted to go “full Tilda” she would have worn it with a cotton undershirt like the model did. I think it’s fine but it really needed some jewelry.

  • Jecca2244

    she must be SO tired.

  • LeelaST

OUT. I loved it until I saw “the flounce.”

  • hmatz

Out. I loved it until that silly hem. It ruined the whole thing for me.

  • JauntyJohn

    Sorry. Out.
It looks like what they would have put Judy Robinson in on an episode of “Lost in Space” where Dr. Smith entered her in some kind of galactic pageant.
    And she lost.

    • Kelly

Ha! I should read the comments before I post my own. But that’s just what I thought of — Lost in Space.

  • EEKstl

She had me til the hem. While either length would have worked, both at the same time don’t. OUT, sorry to say.

  • Ann VerWiebe

I just hate a front zipper. And exposed zippers in general.

  • colorjunky

I’d like her better in the gold version

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    “Ground Control to Major Cate…”

  • editrixie

You say “sexy spacesuit” like that’s a bad thing.

  • Elizabetta1022

In. I think she looks amazing. I don’t even mind the hem all that much. Makes me wish I could wear metallics!

  • Sunshine16

I don’t care that the hem is wonky or that she needs a bracelet. IN

  • IN. her face is interesting enough so she can get by without accessories, although a bracelet would have been even better.

  • Sally Spannagle

I like it. She has enough class to pull this off – it would look way different on a super young starlet. But I think the shoe is too conservative.

  • Miss_Led

    OUT. *flounces off*

  • Camille Chapman

It is just Prada to me. I hate all of it. The runway is ghastly!!

  • PeaceBang

I’m not happy with the outfit but more than that, I’m amused by the chopstick-looking shapes poking out from her head in the first and last photos. Bad backdrop, Oscar Luncheon planners!!

  • Kelly

No, out. Space suit, tin foil, galvanized metal drum — no metaphor I can think of is other than silly. Anyone old enough to remember the silver body suits that cast of “Lost in Space” wore during the first season? Cate’s channeling her inner June Lockhart.

  • GeoDiva

  • VicD

Oh c’mon! I love this! IN. I just wish the “earrings” she appears to have in the first picture were real and not a figment of the backdrop.

  • demidaemon

Silvar Mylar Queen. IN. The hair really makes the look here.

  • sekushinonyanko

I wish she had kind of gone for it in the realm of hair and makeup. It’s a sexy dress, so I think the beige-ness above the neck did it no favors.

  • Haley Buchanan

IN. I love everything about the dress, even the uneven hem which is a feature I don’t normally favor. And what in the world is wrong with “Sexy Spacesuit,” TLo?? It’s sexy, unique, cool, and suits Cate. The shoes don’t quite seem to fit, but the overall look is definitely striking enough for the IN.

  • andreawey

well the zipper makes it look like she has the dress on backwards…..

  • lesmaha

    Sorry–out. Oddly boring.

  • ankali

In! I don’t like the hem especially, either, but it doesn’t bother me enough to take down the whole look, which is somehow sleek and soft at the same time. And I am in absolute awe of how well she makes that dress work, because I LOATHE it on the model.

  • OUT. It needed the contrast in fabrics to keep it interesting and tone done the sci-fi costume effect.

Plus, now I’m starving for a baked potato.

  • Bernadette

Out, this is a luncheon, the all over metallic dress just seems out of place during the day. Would have loved to see her in the gold at an cocktail event.

  • decormaven

Man from Glad gone bad. Out! (But Cate is always IN.)

  • I hate the side hem gusset thingy. The silver is fab on her but if we’re grading on a curve, this is a Cate OUT.
