Holland Roden in Elena Reva at the “Vampire Academy” LA Premiere

Posted on February 05, 2014

Wow. Hats off to you, girl (if we were wearing them). This is a really bold choice for a starlet at her movie premiere.

Holland Roden attends the “Vampire Academy” Premiere held at the The Regal Cinemas in Los Angeles, California in an Elena Reva ensemble paired with an Amanda Pearl clutch and Olcay Gulsen heels.

Elena Reva Spring 2014 Collection

Which it makes it hard for us to criticize. But we will, of course.

As bold as this is, it’s a a but overwhelming in pictures. We’d love to have seen either the top or the pants paired with something else. And we can’t begin to tell you how much we don’t love the accessories. The look is already rather stiff and structured. She needed something with a slightly softer look than that tampon case and those pointy-toed pumps. Plus, the matchiness of the colors bug. Break the two pieces up, pair them with a corresponding black piece (cardi or jacket; skinny pants or pencil skirt), and then introduce some complementary colors in the accessories. That’d be our take, anyway.

Interesting and commendable choice, but it needed different styling, from where we’re sitting. How would you do it, kittens? Play with your Holland Roden paper doll and come up with a killer look.

    Hate the lips.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Totally. It’s going full-on clown lips for me.

    • Gatto Nero

The shade is too orange for the outfit.

    • Tatiana Luján

I actually think she’s one of the very few who can pull that color off.

    • HM3

      I love the lips!!

    • MoHub

The lips could enter a room 15 feet before the rest of her.

    • fiddlecub

I actually dislike the makeup completely. The foundation is uneven and not quite the right color, and the lipstick was not evenly applied.

      • fursa_saida

Yeah, it’s a little odd, because I used to watch her show and she really is stunning, but…not looking so good here.

  • Latin Buddy

    Molly Ringwald-Pretty in Pink-80s realness

  • TrixieConQueso

The “I Spilled My Juice” themed fabric does not werq for moi’.

  • marlie

These pants are too long on her, but I’d change it up anyway. Skinny black pants and strappy black heels. And maybe a metallic silver/grey clutch. Her lipstick looks like it needs to be touched up, and I think that color is too orange-y, anyway.

    (Also, MORE weird bust darts.)

    • Anna

The bust is making her look VERY saggy and misshapen.

      • ballerinawithagun

Love the fabric but that seam across the bust is horrible.

    • Yes – they need to hit just above the ankle like the model’s do. I’d keep the pants, go for a pewter boatneck shell top and pewter slingback kitten heels.

  • kim bunchalastnames

i kind of like the commitment of the outfit in its entirety … but ya, the styling needs changing. black strappy heels and a less sleek clutch, and a totally different lip.

  • filmcricket

Skinny black pant, pewter metallic shoe. The clutch can stay.

  • Gatto Nero

The proportions look better on the model. They seem to overwhelm Ms. Roden (whoever she is).
    Hate the pointy white shoes.
The lip is too orange against this fabric.

  • styrch

I’d suggest a different lip color. And then I don’t like where that bustline is hitting her. I’d rather the clutch were matching the grey tones in the outfit. I’m fine with the shoes if she hemmed up the pants just a tiny bit.

  • LeelaST

It already looks a little retro, pants with a little black boucle cardi & black peep-toe heels with this bag. Last photo is giving me a very young Geena Davis.

    • Danielle

YES. YES. I couldn’t put my finger on it but you NAILED it with Geena Davis. Absolutely correct.

  • Danielle

I sat here, lips pursed and brow furrowed and tried to put into words what exactly I disliked. After ten minutes, I finally concluded that the clutch was the worst offender.

  • Sarah

I think a blue clutch would be nice. Black skirt or pants, silver shoes. And, as much as I hate the trend, I actually think this is an instance where a more subdued lip would be okay. Tone it down, missy.

  • Dam_Angel

How come the gals of Vampire Academy are sporting pregnancy clothes?

    • demidaemon

Vampire guys with active spermazoa, obviously.

  • Evan

Does this remind anyone of that dress Zosia Mamet wore minus the “book mask”? Is it the same fabric?

    • Imasewsure

Yes that is where I saw this before. I was thinking it was this outfit but you are right. It was the fabric (ah the boob mask…)

  • Anna

As a head-to-toe look, the print reminds me of an oil spill. I concur with the skinny black pants and metallic shoe suggestions.

    • conniemd

I’d go the opposite direction. I don’t like the top at all, too much tentlike. I’d keep the pants and go with a shirtless black or silver jacket.

  • Love her lips. I’d keep the pant, trade the top for a black shirt, gray-white jacket.

  • hughman

Needs more 60s, more Sharon Stone in “Casino”, more gold or silver strappy heels, more cat-eye, more bedazzled clutch.

And maybe a cigarette holder, but that’s just me.

    • SewingSiren

We are on the same page. And beehive.

    • decormaven

Absolutely on a big honkin’ cocktail ring. I also would dial back the lip color a smidge as well.

      • hughman

I do love me a ginormous cocktail ring.

  • sagecreek

Can’t stand the white shoes and the whole thing comes off a little Star Trek, but kudos for originality.

  • SketchyCat

Her makeup reminds me of the Friendface episode of The IT Crowd. “It was like breaking up with The Joker!”

Oh, the outfit? She didn’t stick the landing.

  • In_Stitches

I find everything from the neck up so compelling, I want her to ditch the 60’s/startrek mash-up PJ twin set and slip into the minimalistic, sexy red dress her head-styling clearly demands.

  • hmb

Eyes OR lips (the color of which is not for her)…

  • muelonil

I would give the top to Kerry Washington to wear with a solid color pant.

  • MilaXX

I think she could wear the pants & top together with different accessories. Those stark white pointy toe shoes were not the right way to go. If you’re going bold, go bold. I’d do a metallic shoe, a black bag and ANYTHING but that bright orange red lip that clashes with all the pink tones in the outfit. A few skinny bracelets or a pair of earring studs wouldn’t hurt either.

  • tereliz

Hem those fancy pants properly, tone them down with an untucked, short sleeve white blouse with some visual interest, like 3.1 Phillip Lim or Céline—but not an oversized one, she’s too petite—ditch the pink tube for a gray snakeskin minaudière with silver studs and the white pumps for some silver sandals; this would be a good occasion to deploy a “naked shoe” if I ever saw one. Lower the chignon to her nape, get her a pinker lip and VOILÁ. A perfect February in LA outfit to wear to the premiere of a movie you’re not actually in.

  • SketchyCat

The makeup reminds me of the Friendface episode of The IT Crowd. “It was like breaking up with The Joker!”

Oh, the outfit? She didn’t stick the landing.

  • Dagney

Different shoes. Gunmetal? The ones Cate wore the other day. Neater hair. Softer makeup.

  • AzSportsGirl

OK — this looks like one of the gift-bag/tag/bow/tissue combo packages at the Hallmark store! And I’m firmly with the other BKs who have a “NO” reaction to the lip. the seam across the bust line .. ack.

  • Cee Layton

Neck up, all I see is Pierrot. Neck Down, murder victim.

  • Sabin

Like a costume from the 2014 remake of Blue Velvet.

  • Jennelle

The bust seam is bugging me…makes her boobs look like there are at her waist. The print is muddy on her too…she doesn’t look happy or comfortable.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the clutch, but don’t hate either. Love the makeup. Wish she’d worn dark shoes.

  • snarkykitten

looks as stupid as the movie. oh well.

  • Jacob Bowen

I would LOVE to see some jewelry (when don’t I?) and a cute little black top and have her makeup be LESS ORANGE! The lip is already ridiculous, so why did they drag orange-ish blush on her cheeks?

  • unbornfawn

    Inflatable doll lips.

  • KinoEye

Tampon box. Nice. My first thought was to lose the skirt and pair it with black cigarette pants. Also, white shoes? Why? Gunmetal gray, please.

  • Hoffa_w_HerHead

Boxy on the top OR boxy on the bottom. Please pick one unless there is a darn good reason not to.

  • OhSheila

She looks pregnant. Like, past Kerry Washington stage…

  • frannyprof

I would set the whole thing on fire.

  • Love everything above the waist, including the glaringly clashing lipstick.

  • kimmeister

Love the head. I don’t think those pants work on anyone under 50. I’d switch them out for black cigarette pants and shoes, and a pewter clutch. If she wants something matchy, I’d do it in a cocktail ring.

  • shaziz

love it!! LOVE that she’s wearing make up. i’d have gone silver with shoes and maybe a forrest green bag…

  • Trickytrisha

The seam across the boobs is oddly distracting. I do love the fabric and the idea of the outfit, just not the finished product Those wisps of hair sticking to her face drive me nuts. She’s cute though.

  • teensmom99

This is not meant as an insult but I had stuff like that as a kid in the 60s. It was damn chic-but even my 4 yo self wore solid pants and flats. She is beautiful and that helps.

  • bertkeeter

A very sloppy version of a great 60’s silhouette!

  • Shawn EH

Give her Cate Blanchett’s button skirt! What a striking face, though, love her makeup and hair.

  • Kent Roby

What’s your damage, Heather? You look like you crawled through a coal mine and then got really messy with your blood-sucking.

  • judybrowni

So the point of this “ensemble” is to flatten the bust and widen the hips?

Okay, if that’s what you’re going for, I guess, but the white Barbie heels don’t go.

  • ThaliaMenninger

No. The proportions are wrong on her, with the pants and top longer than on the model, and the print looks like she fell and rolled in a crime scene.

  • demidaemon

I would start by burning this outfit, wiping all the makeup off her face and going with something less garish, redoing her hair in a real style, and then giving her something fabulous to wear that is completely and utterly different.

  • melanie0866

It would make a really cute maternity outfit.

  • Valentina Finn

I love the outfit! I want it! But I can skip the accessories and the orange lipstick. Ugh.

It seems like Holland Roden does have a fairly bold style, and I like it. Last fall, TLo posted a kind of “Auntie Mame” ensemble she wore: those 50s – 60s era dresses where the front opened, to reveal slacks? LOVED. GIMME.

  • If she would just stand different – or get a personality? Yes! That’s it! That’s the missing ingredient.

  • nannypoo

I would start by taking off that lipstick. Then, after the baby is born, donate the top with all the rest of the maternity wardrobe to the jumble bin at church. Get a little black sweater to go with the pants and you’re all set.

  • Felicia Zuniga

Don’t you have to be in the movie to have it be considered your premiere? I can’t find anything indicating that Holland is actually in Vampire Academy rather than just attending the premiere.

  • Poeta Paz

No, no, no…it looks like she got her period and had an accident.

  • Big Bear

A brave choice. And with that I have exhausted everything positive I can say.

  • scoobynacks

Wrong shoes, wrong clutch, wrong lipstick. The outfit looks like an expectant mother got in a paintball fight. Definitely maternity wear. That neckline and a lot of the top part is puckering or something.

  • MannahattaMamma

All I can see is lipstick

  • mariahwg

Disagree. This has a modern take on an old look; she’s got strong coloring to pull it off, and it looks dramatic and cool. Pair it with something more neutral and blandifies fast.

  • Therese Bohn

    Betty Draper goes hippie?

  • yethica

Totally agree with you, fabulous uncles. I am picturing the pants with a black top with a little interest to it and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD get rid of the white pumps. Maybe something in a contrasting color? Or a metallic?

  • mrspeel2

Although it’s very cute, her outfit looks like fancy, maternity wear for the 80s.

  • DominoEstella

LOVE! Refreshing and gorgeous. I like her already and I’m ok with the lipstick. I probably would have gone a bit more red but I like the bold lip.
