Fashion Week Coat Porn: Emmy Rossum at the Monique Lhuillier Show in NYC

Posted on February 10, 2014

This has definitely been the week for some coat porn and Miss Emmy is happy to provide some more.

Emmy Rossum attends the Monique Lhuillier Fall 2014 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2014 at the Lincoln Center, New York City.

And it’s a good thing too, because there’s no way that flimsy (but pretty) dress is providing her any warmth. But what we love about this look is not just that she’s wearing a beautiful coat in a gorgeous color, but also that she have the look that pop of glamour she needed by pairing it with gold shoes and a cute little gold bag. Matchy, sure. But it’s got that highly valued “put together” look for New York Fashion Week, and it looks cute in street pictures.

And kudos to her for walking out of the backstage area of the the tents, looking ready for pictures and immediately adopting a pose that shoes off everything she’s wearing, down to the rings. She’s a pro.

Love the overall look, my only quibble is the lipstick and nail polish are too orange-y to go with the coat. Especially love the gold-accents, even if they are a bit matchy.

      • sagecreek

        Love your avatar!

    • appliquer

Ditto on the lipstick/nail polish color – hurts my eyes.

    • MoHub

I’m distracted by her lipstick, which looks like a 6-year-old playing with Mommy’s makeup case.

    • ScarlettHarlot

      I must have this. Must.

    • SewingSiren

Wow. What an improvement to the runway look, by simply lining the skirt properly, so it doesn’t look like her slip is all hiked up.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Is she bare-legged? God bless her. I can’t even imagine right now.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

She should leave the coat on. The lace shirt over boob tube is giving me flashbacks to 1988.

    • Anna

Lipstick is threatening to overpower the whole look but she looks lovely overall. Not really a fan of white lace ensembles, but it does look better on her than on the model.

    • Jessica Freeman

The coat is so very pretty, but that dress is so very not.

      • charlotte

The dress looks like undergarments with a collar.

    • Democracy Diva

Any word on who designed that delicious coat?

    • Noah

The skirt-that-looks-like-a-slip peaking out under the coat gives the absolute weirdest silhouette, but I’d give my eye teeth for that coat.

      • kimmeister

Yes, the coat and skirt lengths are totally wrong for each other.

    • SugarSnap108

Ugh, that coat makes me weak at the knees. Love the whole ensemble when the coat is on (except for the awful lip color).

Too bad she had to take the coat off … Surprise fug?

      • demidaemon

        Surprise, I’m wearing a doily!

    • Kathy

Ooh, I love the oxblood red of that coat, but I’m with all those people who don’t love the lip and nail color.

    • Kate Andrews

I want that purse! The coat is cute too, but it has the effect of looking like she ran outside with a coat over a full-length slip.

    • kat89

Love the coat. That’s about it. Hate the orange lipstick. Girl, that’s not your color. The dress is adorable if she’s running to city hall to elope after the show, but you would think, being that she’s a native NYer, she would know better than to wear a flimsy white lace dress in NY in February.

    • Danielle

      U.N.F.

    • marlie

Another coat that I covet. The color is gorgeous.

    • MondoWasRobbed

Love the coat. Call me old fashioned, but I don’t like the way the dress looks hanging out from underneath the coat. Perhaps it’s because the winter-summer dichotomy is so jarring. I could live with five inches of a nice tweed or plaid fabric showing below the coat hemline.

      • demidaemon

I agree. It would look better if the hems matched. That might be a bit too much leg exposure for Emmy in this weather though. Oh, what am I thinking!? Stars aren’t like us!

I was also going to start off my comment by saying, “Call me old fashioned, but…” I just don’t like it when the dress or skirt hem hangs lower than the hem of the coat. A jacket or cardigan sweater should also not be shorter than the shirt under it. Maybe we’re just applying out-of-date rules to modern clothing.

        • MondoWasRobbed

Oh Gifted, how your eyes must be twitching along with mine as we see “layered” shirts and sweaters cavorting all around us! That band of white peeping below the waistline of a dark top drives me batty. I also have trouble wrapping my brain around the concept of “matchy” equating to “bad.” With my imprinting, it becomes an academic, rather than an aesthetic, exercise to figure out how an outfit is supposed to be put together. Back to Emmy Rossum–old fashioned or not, that lightweight fabric hanging below her winter coat just looks like she threw the coat on over her nightgown for a quick run to the bodega.

    • Suzanne Moore

MY EYES! The lipstick is way too bright. But the coat is yummy. Me want.

    • boweryboy

At first I was all, “Cute coat.” Then I continued to scroll down and was all, “Egads! What’s that? Put your coat back on!”

    • NDC_IPCentral

Coat over nightie. That was my instant impression. Coat color is lovely, but that lipstick – shall we call it Almost Traffic Cone Orange? – is …. vivid, shall we say. I don’t care for the gold shoes and bag — unless this is an evening appearance. If not nighttime, tacky.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I love pretty much every Emmy’s appearance on a Red Carpet, and this one is no exception. But is it me or her face looks a little bit… draggy? Especially around the eyes and eyebrows, there’s something a little bit plastic on her face that disturbs me.

    • Violentcello

I love an orange lip, so I can’t hate too much. It looks great with the dress, which is probably what she was thinking of when she picked it.

    • Brittney Garneau

LOVE the coat. Too bad I live in Houston and the timeframe for needing a coat is about 48 hours per year.

    • MilaXX

Coat is cute and I that outfit, while pretty would make more sense in July.

    • Richard

I love this look. Does anyone else think her make up makes her look like Marion Cotillard?

    • unbornfawn

Love the color of that coat.

    • Aidan B

      GIVE IT TO ME.

    • Ann VerWiebe

She looks like she’s having fun!

    • Trickytrisha

      Lipstick much?

    • Nonnah

Is it really that warm in the tents to be sleeveless?

    • bellafigura1

Her lipstick looks like my Aunt Ange’s.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Hate the lipstick, everything else is swoon-worthy. Attagirl.

    • quiltrx

She looks terrific (but still having lipstick problems, sadly).
But this outfit deserves a mullet-inspired saying–“winter on the outside, summer on the inside”. Just weird.

    • Jacob Bowen

A fellow Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus member has a jacket the SAME COLOR and I tell him every week that I covet it….and by covet I mean “want to steal”.

    • murt

Don’t like the coat with that dress though – the length of the dress hem doesn’t work proportionally with the length of the coat’s hem.

      • Madam Von Sassypants

I feel the exact opposite. I adore that delicate, conventionally warm weather fabric poking out of a heavier, cold weather coat.

    • Cassidy Olsen

      EYEBROWS.

    • ShaoLinKitten

This reminds me of that line from Reality Bites– “Your dress looks like a doily.”
