Emma Watson in Giambattista Valli Couture at the 2014 ELLE Style Awards

Posted on February 19, 2014

Emma honey, we give you all the credit in the world for picking this dress and trying like hell to make it work. But sweetie…

Emma Watson attends the 2014 ELLE Style Awards in London in a Giambattista Valli couture beaded top and silk
dress accessorized with Christian Louboutin pumps, a Sophie Bille Brahe ear cuff, and rings by Boucheron and Catbird.

Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Couture Collection

That’s one seriously crazy skirt. Not even you can make this one work, dear. You look like you don’t know where to put your left hand. You also kind of look like a toddler whose diaper has just filled to capacity. We’re guessing that wasn’t the image you were going for. We’re also guessing that you know this, because your facial expression is a bit on the, shall we say knowing side of things. You’re not given to smirks, but that’s one hell of a “Yeah, I know. Let’s just get this over with” expression.

That’s a scroll down fug if I ever saw one. That face though.

      oui

  • ballerinawithagun

Is it a bow, is it pockets, it’s 2, 2, 2 looks in one! Well, maybe even 3!

    • Lori

      All of them bad.

  • Stella Zawistowski

She looks like a very sparkly waitress who’s reaching into her apron so she can get me the check.

    A sparkly waitress with ‘TUDE.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

Emma Watson Haiku for the day:

    No no no no no.
No no no no no no no.
    No. No. No. No. No.

    • Snailstsichr

      Love a heartfelt haiku!

  • lundibleu

That’s …. well, that’s a bit special. I don’t know what anyone was thinking having that made.

Those are some killer heels though. How can anyone walk in them?

    • JulieTy

      She’s young.

      • gabbilevy

Also, short distances. (Limo > RC > seat)

      • lundibleu

Fair enough. I’m a guy who has never even tried to wear high heels, let alone ones that pretty much require walking like a ballerina en pointe, so I just find it incredibly hard to imagine how!

        • Alyssa

I love wearing very high heels on occasion, and I find that my past as a ballerina who danced in pointe shoes has helped. My friends all think I’m crazy. My only problem is they make my knees hurt if I wear them too long (which can also be blamed on the ballet).

    • marlie

They’re high, but I wear heels that high, on occasion. They’re not THAT bad. ;)

  • StellaZafella

And it wasn’t me or her mother that made her wear this…

  • lunchcoma

People have finally learned to avoid the tit bow and now we get the crotch bow as a replacement. Great.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

They sure love bows. It must be because famous people see themselves as a gift to the world, bless them.

  • B_C_J

Beautiful young woman wearing a very awkward dress. The top is fine but the skirt is an atrocity

  • MilaXX

    That skirt bow is ridiculous!

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Wow. The white at the bottom makes it look like her skirt is askew and the slip is showing. Not that girls still wear slips.

    Get off my lawn, whippersnapper.

    • 3boysful

I am not sure you can even buy a slip these days.

      • marlie

You can. They’re painfully difficult to find, but they’re out there.

        • SierraDelta

And they’re not at all attractive. They’re variations of Industrial Strength Underwear.

      • Evan

I find it sad that the slip has gone away. I remember trying my mom’s on when I was a little boy. That was a clear sign I was gay lol

        • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

We used to wear my moms on our head and pretend we were nuns. I’m glad my experience wasn’t as prophetic!

    • Loramir

I wear slips (the skirt kind, not full slips) for church and stuff and I’m 27…what else would you do if you’re wearing a thin chiffon skirt and don’t want it to be see-through? I’ve found them at Walmart, but then I’m in the South where there’s maybe more people going to formal conservative churches or something.

      • marlie

Yep, every once in a while you still need them for those things that are a teensy bit too sheer to be appropriate, or because without it, wearing tights with unlined skirts and dresses in the winter is a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

        • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I was looking for one for my daughter and I swear, I looked everywhere I could think of. No one carried a half slip that wasn’t a foundation garment. I finally ordered one online and tightened the elastic to fit her, but they’re scarcer than hens teeth out here on the West Coast!

  • teensmom99

I said earlier re Katy P that I love a weird hem but this is too much even for me. Props for taking a risk.

  • KinoEye

She looks great from the waist up, but that is one wonky skirt. Blech.

  • scoobynacks

It looks like she was in the limo and decided that the bottom half of the dress needed to be swept up and tied together.

  • MissusBee

Are designers making just-for-blog dresses now? Because I cannot see the point of this garment other than a starlet wearing it to get papped and posted just so everyone can say ‘crazy madness!’ and generate the requisite column inches/impressions/comments. Call me a cynic but why else does a pretty and oftentimes stylish girl wear a nappy skirt?

  • DominoEstella

The dress is bad but somehow she’s pulling it off.

  • Gatto Nero

That’s one big ol’ crotch bow. Her face is beautiful, though.
And, yeah — she looks like she knows.

  • Imasewsure

Kind of digging the extreme makeup and I like the shoes… the rest… ummmmmm… NO

  • Danielle

From the neck up, I swoon.

  • frannyprof

She looks like a fashion victim.

  • Mothra

    How unfortunate.

  • Carrie

Credit for fierce face, but no clue who could actually pull it off. Even the model doesn’t look great in it.

  • BobStPaul

Well, that was good for my laugh of the day.

  • deelup

I think this dress is ridiculous. But I actually think she looks fantastic. Obviously hair is nice and makeup is flawless. And oddly, that messed up bow and the bodice are doing amazing things for her figure. It’s giving her a phenomenal hourglass shape.

  • Gamer Mama

    She looks like she’s exhausted.

  • majorbedhead

Whoa. And the top of it is so cute. But the bottom half is whackadoodle.

  • Betsy

It looks like she’s lifting up her dress to use the potty.

  • formerlyAnon

It looks like an old school gym uniform (OLD. Bloomer shorts under a tunic dress old. Which tunic thing always got rucked up on the shorts if actual athleticism happened.) bred with a cocktail dress. (Yes. I went to Catholic school for a while. Why do you ask?)

    • SierraDelta

ACK! My Catholic high school’s gym suits were 100% cotton, shirtwaist-style, belted, knee length, with bloomers underneath. Each year was assigned a color — my class was fortunate enough to get yellow, but the other grades got purple, maroon, or Bic pen blue. As an added bonus, we were required to embroider our first initial and surname across the back yoke. And they had to be ironed, which took a good half hour.

I am not 107 years old.

      • formerlyAnon

Ha. Ours were a dingy white cotton/poly blend, a weird cross between a shirt waist without much waist, and a short sleeved tunic. Snaps, not buttons. Came down to maybe 2-3 inches above the knee, over matching bloomers. MIND BOGGLINGLY ugly, but we didn’t have to buy them, just check them out from the school and return at the end of the year, or if a different size was needed. Hence, their dingy state. (They were numbered on a tape sewn into the neck or waist to identify each set.) I don’t remember ironing them so probably we got out of it because of the poly blend.

  • kimmeister

Her makeup is making her face look very . . . pointy.

  • boweryboy

Who talked her into this? She fire them or stop being their friend.

  • crash1212

Her head looks pretty! That’s it…all I got.

  • ralish

She seems to really like wearing risky dresses that don’t quite work. She does look lovely here from the waist up.

  • annrr

Her make-up looks gorgeous, love that lipstick.

  • alyce1213

Dress looks like those things one wears to collect trash for community service. All she needs is a pick on a stick.

    • SugarSnap108

Her expression does suggest she was sentenced to wear this.

  • TwiddlyStun

She often has a kind of signature smirk that I like, unlike some others. The first shots look a little too Tyra-Smized for my taste. Is that the knowing look?

  • 3boysful

Either 1) she was tipped off about bad food and brought along a sub sandwich; or 2) she was tipped off about fab food and wore the doggy bag skirt.

  • demidaemon

Diaper was my exact thought. It looks like she is covering up here adult diaper in one of those horrible Depends competitors (or is it actually Depends?) commercials. Yes, ladies, you can wear an adult diaper underneath your hideous and enormous bow skirt!

  • ashtangajunkie

I usually enjoy her offbeat fashion choices, but no.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    Great makeup though.

  • Rand Ortega

Just opened the dictionary & found that dress under “tortured”.

  • Akemi

Wow, she is wearing a lot of makeup.
I miiiiiiiiight have liked the dress better if that bottom bit wasn’t white. But still. Yikes.

  • marlie

I like the top, and I like her makeup. I wish her hair were a little more “done,” and if the skirt were longer and in another color, I think I’d like it a lot more.

  • rebeemoon

She does have THE BEST smirk face, though.

  • Erica

That was a very short trip to scroll down fug.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

When I saw the whole thing I actually gasped and said “Sweet Jesus what did she do?”

  • Anna

Ouch. Have your stylist sent to Azkaban, Emma. The Imperius Curse is Unforgivable. And so is your diaper.

  • Oh Goody Goody

It probably wasn’t a good idea to turn the Wu-Tang Clan’s logo into a skirt.

  • Tracy_Flick

That bow looks like awkward wrapping. Like, from before they invented gift bags, and if you wanted to give someone something non-rectangular, the wrapping always ended up looking like that.

  • jw_ny

hate the lipstick! What an awful shade. I’m getting a “joker” vibe from the way she drew in the upturn at the corners of her mouth…we know she never smiles. ;)

  • cocohall

Baby girl you are a half a foot too short to even attempt this look. You are trying to compensate in those heels, but the proportions are off without another six inches of leg, and even then it is a FMO type of look. But top half looks awesome. Hope you got to sit down quickly!

  • irielle

I really like Emma Watson, but that said, it looks like she’s got her hand inside a very large and strange pocket.

  • Dadoong21

I saw the thumbnail [of her makeup and part of the top], read the blurb and thought how could that look so bad?! Then I scrolled down… I don’t actually hate it. While it does look like she’s bundles up the train of her dress to use the loo, I can appreciate it in an odd sense.

And I think her face isn’t “get this over with”, it’s more like, “Yeah, and??”. I say go Emma. But huge kudos to the make up artist. Beautiful!

  • quiltrx

I like the bodice, and her face looks great…so the skirt is just a plain ol’ shame.

  • Kate4queen

Dress caught in her knickers syndrome…

  • Jecca2244

not going to lie, i now get her and the daughter from Mad Men confused.

  • Columbinia

Beautiful bodice but don’t scroll down to see the rest. Month #2 of the winter awards season and we seem to have run out of decent clothes and started scraping the bottom of the barrel. I’m assuming the Oscar-worthy gowns have already been reserved and set aside.

  • Adrianna Grężak

That dress should have never been designed, but I like that she’s committing.

  • Qitkat

Let us all praise Oprah that there is an underskirt here.

She is giving great face. Considering the unfortunate-ness of all this schmatta.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Hair and makeup are fab.She tried. sigh….

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

    out

  • LaSylphide

It takes a lot of guts to wear something so obviously weird and unflattering. Too bad, because the hair and makeup are great, and the top and shoes are pretty cute. On the other hand, Emma rarely plays it safe and she manages to pull of most of the oddball outfits she wears. Not much she can do with this, though.

    • http://vogueworthyy.wordpress.com/ Anastacia

Completely agree! Her make up and hair make up looks stunning, the rest of the outfit however could have been better. xo

  • in a pickle

I’ve absolutely worn a skirt that way- while doing laundry knee deep in a river. Or am I just channeling Lucille Ball in a vat of grapes?

  • http://vogueworthyy.wordpress.com/ Anastacia

Not exactly the best outfit Emma Watson has worn…her make up looks lovely though. xo

  • YoungSally

It’s like the diapers that Shirley Temple (RIP) wore in the Baby Burlesks (sic)

  • murt

She looks like such a fashion victim in that dress… I don`t like the cakey, matte makeup with the clumpy lashes either.

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

Her eyes look weird, like she hasn’t slept in a week.

  • GillianHolroyd

Too much dress for her and she looks awkward in it.

  • decormaven

It almost looks like short offset Dutchman’s pants at first glance, then I figured out it was a bow. What a bizarre style! I’ll just gaze at her pretty face and give the look a pass.

  • Skippymom1

How bad was the bet she lost that this was what she had to do as payoff?

  • MaggieMae

She is a fashion risk taker, isn’t she?

  • fringebenefit

    Hair and make-up divine!

  • MoHub

It actually looked a bit promising in the thumbnail, but then—

  • Michelle Gennari

    Looks like a diaper.

  • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

I actually think it works as a wack-a-doo dress for a young fashionista….until the white part that reminds me of an old-fashioned granny girdle. Or maybe the dress is just getting a boost from her gorgeous face.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I walked right into the thumbnail again. (*Rubs nose*) Yep, I never learn, happens every time.

  • Shawn EH

Gives a whole new reading to the pussy bow concept? She’s a risk-taker, though!

  • hillmad

That face, that skin! If I didn’t love her, I’d hate her (apologies to Squeeze)!

  • lalahartma

    The side shot is nice.

  • sunflower

    Well, I like her makeup
