Donna Karan New York Fall 2014 Collection

Posted on February 11, 2014

Donna Karan, for her 30th anniversary runway show, turned the Donna Karan dials up to eleven, offering up what might have been a greatest hits collection but instead felt like a fresh take on all the things that made the brand what it is. Forgive us for sounding like runway modeling coaches, but it’s a collection that inspires brevity so here goes: It was all strong, fierce, goddess, shape, sex, power, walk, drama, stomp, drape, and flow, darlings.  A walking (stomping) cornucupia of the Donna Karan aesthetic and point of view. Sexy to outrageous to take-no-prisoners.

If I were younger and slim hipped, Donna Karan would be my designer.

      • sagecreek

No kidding… I wish I could rock some of those thigh-high boots.

        • Funkykatt

We probably are perfect for them or them for us!

      • TigerLaverada

Her and Carolina Herrera. In my dreams.

    • MilaXX

Nice. There are more sheer pieces in this collection than I care for bit that gray wool with the sheer cuts is gorgeous!

      • SugarSnap108

That gray one is beautiful, but I’m not a fan of all the sheer skirts. I’ve been hoping that trend would die.

    • miscorrections

The red faux furs are TRAY MAGNIFEEK.

      • lalahartma

I do not think the furs are faux.

        • miscorrections

The gloss on the reds reads as synthetic to me, but I could be wrong of course.

          • YoungSally

If I had a reason to be a fur person — I would be all over the white fur with the big collar. Especially in the chilly NYC weather. I would wear it just to run to the diner and the bodega and the Duane Reade

    • laura

That is some serious coat porn. Especially the belted camel number. Wow. WANT.

      • MaggieMae

        Right?! WANT.

I want to BE the woman who dresses like that.

      • conniemd

Loved that coat at first glance. But given it was close to zero last night, I really want the down brown coat directly below it, it looks so warm.

    • homofascist

Some really gorgeous pieces but good lord some of those shoes are hiddy. Did no one look at them from the front? They give the models horses hooves!

      • SierraDelta

Yeah, what’s up with all of the ugly shoes?

    • ModernDowager

      hot damn

    • Adrianna Grężak

I’m glad large puffy coats aren’t a trend anymore. (Though it was convienant to have a portable comfortable)

    • deelup

The coats are all kinds of awesome (except for the one that looks like a white tribble exploded on it). The rest is nothing exciting.

      • Tatiana Luján

I love all the coats, except the one that looks like a duvet.
I’m not excited about anything else from the collection (though surely many of the pieces would look great in my closet, as if)

      • kimmeister

You saw an exploded white tribble, I saw a skunk.

    • Danielle

Those thigh high boots are making me want to go take a cold shower. *fans self*

      • TrixieConQueso

Word to your mother. I just broke down and bought some black suede thigh highs. If not now – when? YOLO.

        • formerlyAnon

          You go!

        • KinoEye

You’ve inspired me to begin the hunt for a good pair of brown ones. YOLO indeed!

    • Daisy Walker

I see more granny panties than I’d like, and the puffy coat is a no. Otherwise, gorgeous!

      • Farthingale

The puffy coat reminds me of the Norma Kamali sleeping bag coat—which was about 30 years ago. This winter leaving the house wrapped in a down comforter seems entirely warranted.

        • Daisy Walker

I thought that too! And I agree that practicality might trump style this winter for those of us in the real world.

    • VioletFem

I want those thigh high boots (I also want a reason to wear them).

    • another_laura

LOVE all of this except for the fur pieces. But I would take everything in faux fur.

    • Gatto Nero

      Great coats and jackets.
The sheers — not so great.

    • marlie

Next time I go out with the bf, I’m going to wear a blazer and thigh-high boots and nothing else.

Seriously, though, I LOVE the colors. And there are quite a few gorgeous coats here.

      • formerlyAnon

I’m reasonably certain the bf will be pleased, though he may not agree to take you out.

        • demidaemon

You’ll be lucky if you make it out the door.

          • SierraDelta

Seriously, you two. I’m trying to keep my tea off my computer screen.

            • demidaemon

I’m sorry! I don’t want to be responsible for wasting good tea!

        • SierraDelta

Please — I’m trying to keep my tea in my cup.

    • ThaliaMenninger

To wear this collection, I would like to call on Marlene Dietrich, please.

    • icm

      ookpik couture.

    • SugarSnap108

I like many of the coats/jackets. But why won’t sheer skirts die, or at least take a season off?

      • quiltrx

I have an idea. It would be fairly easy to make our own (cheap, granted) sheer skirts in a few sizes. We BKs could pass them around and take pictures of us in them and our granny panties, and send them to all the designers. I have a feeling once they see “regular women” in them, they’ll cease and desist!

    • quiltrx

So much coat and jacket porn! The grey/black houndstooth wants to come live at my house.
And, provided that it has a center skirt panel as it appears to, I LOVE the purple gown in the small pics.

    • hmb

I actually really love the shoes, all suedes and lift, and boots as pants. The collection is smouldering, I wish I had even a glimmer of an excuse to wear one of these frocks. Alas.

    • ballerinawithagun

Love the black and metallic gold coat!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Is the hair supposed to be referencing Rihanna’s doobie wrap? Anyway, in my next life I want the legs for thigh high red suede boots.

      • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

My mind jumped to ‘comb-over’ but I think your idea is more correct.

    • MzzPants

      My God, THE COATS.

    • V No Privacy

I will take one of each coat, please and thank you.

    • RussellH88

That second outfit is Sally Bowles like crazy.

    • Lilithcat

      Dear Ms. Karan:

Ship that white fur coat to me instanter!

      Yours truly,

      Lilithcat

    • formerlyAnon

Oooohhhh. To be young and well off. I love a lot of this. The shape of the grey dress with sheer cut outs is beautiful. Jackets! I need say no more about those. And I love that here’s another collection which includes voluminous, soft trousers. I love ‘em. Now if only I were tall enough/long legged enough to wear them effectively. *sigh*

    • ckokopuff

Cruella DeVille’s Wardrobe. And I mean that as a compliment.

    • tereliz

      That camel coat! *gasp*

    • KinoEye

God, how I wish I was rich. I hope that red and black number is synthetic fur, and it would absolutely clash with my hair, but damn it I WANT IT NOW. In my parallel universe, I would wear it with leather skinny jeans, a ridiculous diamond choker and absurdly high heels. I would go to Germany and swan about in expensive cabarets with a long cigarette holder and a glass of champagne, at all times. I would shoot the breeze with fabulous German drag queens and foreign debutantes who know where to find the good drugs because they’re filthy rich. Alas, I sit in a tiny office in Texas. Such is life.

    • Shawn EH

Not feeling any of it. Baggy and shapeless.

    • Imasewsure

Love it all especially the reds but I do not like the tufts of fur coat – that one is ugs. That white coat is amazing (as long as it’s fake fur that is)

    • NYCGlamourpuss

The fur hurts my heart, but I can’t deny that this is a GORGEOUS line up!

    • Ann VerWiebe

I could really use that puffy coat right about now!

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

That coat in the header carried me right past the satin blazer and thigh-high debacle to the deliciousness of the rest of this collection. I never knew there were “do me” coats, but I can definitely envision some coat, heels, and a smile moments with a few of these.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Is this shouting “Beyoncé!!!” to anyone else?

    • PeaceBang

Those coats are divoon. I was heading into heights of rapturous adoration but then the flowy dresses calmed me down. They’re kind of not very interesting. Still: DOSE COATS.

    • demidaemon

I just wish she hadn’t shown that first look. It’s a little too on-the-nose “Shades of Gray” realness. Otherwise, I love this collection.

    • kt

I have never been one for her wispy hemline aesthetic, but I would love one of each of the coats please.

    • CatherineRhodes

Big disappointment. I can usually count on DK for hip work clothes, the style chosen by a NYC or LA media executive. This collection is mostly just bizarre.

    • LambeeBaby

That white coat is exquisite. But I’d take faux fur versions of any of them.
