Diane Kruger at the Peter Pilotto for Target Launch Event

Posted on February 07, 2014

We don’t even know where to start. We’re not kidding we’ve written about 6 or 7 opening sentences for this post and scrapped all of them. We’re just flabbergasted by this styling, which is, to our eyes, the absolute worst way to show these pieces off:

Diane Kruger attends the Peter Pilotto for Target launch event in New York City.

Peter Pilotto for Target Collection

We rolled our eyes and said “Yeah, that PP for Target collection is pretty much what we thought it’d be.” But then we saw the separate pieces and realized they both look pretty great on their own. It may be the Pilotto way to mashup all kinds of prints and patterns and then completely saturate an outfit with them, but the average consumer of fashion probably wouldn’t want to wear these two pieces together. That blouse is actually really cute. The skirt, no matter what you pair it with, is a just a little too tricky to pull off.  Even Diane can’t quite manage it.

  • I would have thought that putting a piece of clothing on Diane Kruger was always a good start. I can’t be nice about Peter Pilotto: I think these clothes are only marginally less horrible than his usual stuff.

    • Stella Zawistowski

I KNOW. Why do I think there are going to be a lot of these on the clearance rack for $12.48 in about six weeks?

      • kimmeister

That happens to all of the mini collections for Target though. Got two of the Philip Lim pieces for $11.98 a few weeks back! Also a pair of Prabal Gurung pumps.

    • KinoEye

It usually is a great start — that woman can WEAR clothes — but this little getup turns even a beautiful, German blonde into a stumpy mess of prints. I shudder to think what it would do to the rest of us

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Look out Stella McCartney, there’s a new aggressively ugly line of clothes in town!

    • Imasewsure

How about Stella McCartney for Target? The fashion world will implode!!

      • vitaminC

“…when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.”

        • melisaurus

When you fall in a bottomless pit you die of starvation.

  • SayWhaaatNow

That top with skinny black pants and black heels (not the ones she’s wearing now). Messier (or just less sleek) hair to give the outfit some edge. Maybe a ring to balance out the clutch in the other hand?

    • Gatto Nero

Yes to the top with black pants.
Throw the skirt in the bin.

    • Mismarker

Yes! I really like the shirt and was thinking it would look great with black leather skinny pants and booties. Let’s pretend the skirt never happened.

  • @Biting Panda

    Seizure inducing. Nay.

  • Anna

Atrocious. Between this and Rashida Jones’s dress, my eyes have had it.

    • charlotte

I’m pretty sure that they would like each other’s outfits. Sadly.

      • demidaemon

Just think what would happen if they mated.

  • mjude

I have to say when I sa the 1st commercial for the clothes, I screamed with delight because of the song playing…YOU MAKE ME FEEL, MIGHTY REAL!

    • Mismarker

Can’t hear that song without thinking of Isaac Mizrahi’s Unzipped.

    • demidaemon

      It is quite enthralling.

  • boweryboy

I loathe Peter Pilotto’s desgins. The pieces wouldn’t look so bad on Kruger if she were actually wearing the skirt in the thumbnail. The matching print on the shirt and skirt takes it too far. It needs the contrast (as if there isn’t enough).

  • deelup

Girl, you are stunning. Please hire a different stylist.

    • MilaXX

She’s one of those who don’t use a stylist.

      • KinoEye

Wow, really? Then she normally has very good instincts. But PP is a dicey proposition for women of all shapes, sizes and colors. I learn so much from you, Mila!

        • MilaXX

I read an interview where she said she found it weird that people would hire someone to tell them what to wear.

          • demidaemon

Yes, well, I’m sure people would also find it weird to be stalked by professional photographers every day because of their career choice, but she does that, too.

  • MoHub

    Sorry. Can’t deal with Pilotto.

  • Lilithcat

I’m not sure there’s a good way to show off those pieces.

  • sagecreek

    Bad. And I’m their demographic.

    • alyce1213

I just commented that I didn’t think Diane Kruger represented their demographic. I think this Target stuff is too young for her. Maybe I’m wrong?

  • Blair Sylvester

I’m confused is the shirt peeking through cut outs on the skirt or is her skirt different from the one shown

  • Danielle

This whole collection is hiddy. It’s all going to be on the clearance rack in a couple of months. Bring back Missoni!

  • jw_ny

It took a few minutes of scrolling and reading comments to realize that I like the top…it’s just all too much of a jolt when paired with the skirt. Definitely should have been worn as a separate…with a much simpler bottom. And, speaking of that skirt…it’s way too short on her. Her makeup has never looked better…love her brows! This could be the prettiest I’ve ever seen her.

  • SierraDelta

I don’t think I’ve ever seen DK look so. . .ordinary. . .before.

    • Danielle

Well, she IS in “ordinary people” clothing. It’s like seeing Santa Clause on a smoke break, or a shaved lion.

      • KinoEye

HAHA. Santa on a smoke break. Thanks for the first laugh of the morning.

  • LambeeBaby

Her face looks beautiful. Unfortunately Crayola vomited on her.

  • Jacob Bowen

My best friend (who I affectionately refer to as my “clothing rack”) will SLAY in that top but that skirt has 2 BIG prints that shouldn’t go together.

  • pinkxxa

I would wear the shit out of that and I would not mind one bit if anyone judged. I think Solange would make this sing

  • MilaXX

The look book is nice, but honestly the novelty mass market retailers and designers has worn off.

  • livesarah

The skirt is just really badly cut. I would never/could never pull off that blouse, but I think it suits her. Certainly the outfit suits her a lot better than a lot of the vastly more expensive designer items I have seen her wear…

  • Lorelski

    Two words: patchwork quilt.

  • alyce1213

I still haven’t recovered from Pilotto’s pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey dress on Kerry Washington, #1 worst look of last year.

There are two too many prints in this mix and I don’t particularly love the remaining two.
This, and the ads I’ve seen, appear kind of junior-to-20’s to me. From a marketing standpoint — Why Diane Kruger?
Alright, there’s not a line in her lovely face but she’s a grown-up woman. I think this is an odd line for her to represent.

    Also, burn that skirt.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Pilotto might like mashing up prints, but Tom and Lorenzo are correct; that’s way too much print, even for someone like Diane Kruger. I can’t believe that I actually like a Pilotto piece, but I like that skirt (now ducking for cover). both pieces, paired with a solid top or bottom could work. Note that I said “could”.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

I can’t decide if I love it or if it gives me a headache.

    • MilaXX

The look book is quite nice, but all put together like this it’s too much.

  • I always have a soft spot for Pilotto. His stuff kind of seems intellectual. And when he makes mistakes, at least they aren’t boring! I remember that once TLo said that you need a PhD in fashion to wear his stuff successfully and I think that’s true. While Kruger might have a PhD, she got it in the blonde subdivision, which never struck me as Pilotto-esque.

  • Columbinia

Even the gorgeous Diane Kruger can’t make this thing work. But she’s proven that she’s a darn good actress by smiling so sincerely while wearing this awkward outfit.

  • Betsy

    She looks like a quilt.

    • quiltrx

One where a child picked out the fabrics, at that.

  • minnye

I like the high-waist trend, and love mixed prints, but in this case it’s all too much & looks awkward. Too fussy.

    • MilaXX

It looks choked up. Like the skirt equivalent of mom jeans.

  • Trickytrisha

    Butt ugly outfit.

  • guest2visits

The Target commercial is very nice – the clothes are buoyant, fun… attractive as separates.
Not liking Diane’s sample all that much.

  • LaSylphide

I don’t think I’ll ever understand this designer’s appeal. Maybe the blouse would look good on its own, but that’s not how it’s presented, and the whole outfit looks awful.

  • Carly Warnock

I love Prabal Gurung and Peter Pilotto. I’m quite into prints though, as a bit of a washed out blonde I find they fit my look.

  • MzzPants

I’d wear that shirt with some black skinnies. Except in my size, they’re not really ‘skinny’.

  • cocohall

Nothing works here. Not the clothes, the backdrop nor Miss Kruger. For all I know she shops the hell out of Target, but she doesn’t LOOK the part. She doesn’t read as a “hi-lo” girl even. My cart will just roll on by, even when these go on sale.

  • Sam Smith

Why is she holding a sponge? Did she pick that up at Target too?

    • decormaven

Has Target ever served as the accessories wall for Project Runway? Can’t recall…

    • mickiemonkey

Exactly what I thought! Oh look, she is about to scrub a very large sink!

  • judybrowni

Okay, I was thinking “The Limited Sale Rack 1990,” even before I saw the skirt.

Too short, hiddy skirt, and the line-backer shoulders, puffy, drooping breasts from the blouse, shoes all wrong, too.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She had to go and change the print of the skirt to match the blouse… why?

  • CatherineRhodes

That is a very unflattering outfit. Anything that makes Diane Kruger look chunky just has no hope.

    • carnush

Exactly. If she can’t pull it off, no one can.

  • AceOn6

    Needs tights

  • tylka5

We saw these in the store yesterday. Normally the designer collections fly off the shelves and you are lucky to find one piece. THis collection, not so much. People were actively avoiding them. We touched them. Yucky fabric. Not good at all.

    • mary

hahah true , i regret ordering online . i cant wait to return them all once they all arrive , their fabric is tucky and cheap . alot of stocked in the store which is too late after i ordered online . comparison with isabel marant inH&M which is way too far from the quality

  • Why do I always imagine her in some variety of Frankendress?
