Coat Porn: Kate Mara in Tribeca, NYC

Posted on February 21, 2014

This look is ADORABLE:

“House of Cards” star Kate Mara out and about in Tribeca, New York City.

Midway through Fashion Week, we found ourselves seated behind an entire row of lady fashion editors and stylists EVERY SINGLE ONE of whom was sporting a version of the slouchy hat you see here. Tom turned to Lorenzo and said, “I see they’ve all collectively decided upon their headgear this season.” After all, how else are you going to know they’re an Important Fashion Person if they’re not wearing the agreed-upon Important Fashion Person gear? We were sick of looking at them by the end of the week.

But our love for the slouchy hat has suddenly returned, because she’s rocking the hell out of this look. The coat, the slim pants, the fabulous shoes, and the perfect pops of color in the hat and bag – somebody put this look together and we’re here to tell you, they did a damn fine job. This is the second look of hers in a row that made her look like a walking ad campaign. Someone’s earning their keep by keeping her stylish. Attagirl.

I want this entire ensemble right meow.

      • Sarah

Liked for meow. (Not a fan of the hat.)

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

The reason why this works so well is that the hat covers the horrible ombre hair.

      • FrigidDiva

But you can still see the worst part, that terrible light blonde. I hope it’s for a movie role, because that color is just all wrong for her.

        • fursa_saida

It was just announced that she’s playing Sue Storm in the new Fantastic Four movie (with Michael B. Jordan playing Johnny Storm, which is the main reason I’m excited about it). I’m betting she did it during negotiations as a “see I can look the part” thing. I’m betting they’ll rework it for the actual movie, though.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Interesting. I think she’s a better choice than Jessica Alba!

            • fursa_saida

Well, that’s a pretty low bar (and I speak as a big fan of Dark Angel), but yeah, the cast is shaping up to be interesting! I’m especially pleased to see the first instance I know of of racebending in comic book movies–not just a black Johnny Storm but also a biracial family, whether biological or adoptive (since he and Kate Mara will be playing siblings). Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm is particularly intriguing.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I’m pretty sure Nick Fury was white in the comics!

            • fursa_saida

He was, but I beliiiieeeeve (not 100% on this) he was succeeded by a black Nick Fury prior to the movies and Samuel L. Jackson. There are a bunch of really cool successor heroes of color in the comics–Miles Morales and Kamala Khan being the two who come to mind first. I really hope they get to make movie appearances somewhere down the line.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I was reading a thing about Guardians of the Galaxy, where Djimon Hounsou said that his kid had wanted to be light-skinned so he could be a superhero. Which just makes my heart break. So the more diverse they get the better.

            • fursa_saida

I know, it’s so sad. I read a similar piece in the NYT a while ago, where the (white) author was initially baffled by his (adoptive, black) son’s disinterest in Spider-Man and then heartbroken when he understood the reason. So here’s one for Miles Morales, the Afro-Hispanic Spider-boy :)

(The comics do a good job of being very aware of what it means for him to be black, too–it’s quite something to see NYC cops telling Spider-Man, who they don’t know is black, how much they appreciate his help. AWKWARD, GUYS. They also did a panel that showed him in a hoodie, with Skittles and an iced tea. Powerful stuff.)

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Oh – and not a major role, but I remember reading people complaining about Idris Elba as Heimdall – so I guess he was white in the comics too?

            • SierraDelta

I loved Dark Angel, too! My younger son is JA’s age, and I remember looking at him as we sat on the couch watching and asking, “So how come you aren’t starring in your own TV series yet?”

      • Jacob Marek

when did “ombre” hair become a thing? back in my day, it was known as “bad roots.”

        • alyce1213

          It’s “bad roots on purpose”

        • Mitchy Nathan Mitchell

It was started as a trick for women to pretend they aren’t going gray by making it look like their roots are gray-free.

      • Danielle

Was just scrolling down to say the same thing.

      • decormaven

        Damn tootin’.

      • Adrianna Grężak

I don’t mind ombre, but only when it’s subtle. Bright blonde hair is not subtle

    • georgie

She looks like an H&M mannequin. Love this look.

    • Glam Dixie

If I were nitpicking, the color of the hat seems off to me with the rest of this look, but I love the red purse with it, and overall this whole thing is giving me James Earl Jones saying, “Cray cray adorbs” in my head

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

That’s amazing. When did James Earl Jones say “cray cray adorbs”?

        • Glam Dixie

          It’s a Sprint commercial, I posted a link but it’s awaiting moderation.

          • cocohall

Props to you for knowing what the advertisement is for! I can place JEJ saying totes adorbs, or whatever, but couldn’t for the life of me remember which company he was working for.

            • Glam Dixie

I confess that I was thinking it was a different phone company until I searched on YouTube, lol. It’s like the one for the guy with all of the little kids sitting around the table, I love it but I can never remember what it’s for.

            • cocohall

Exactly. Love the kids (more is more) but haven’t a clue what the ad is for.

        • Kristin McNamara

Speaking of JEJ saying things I would’ve never envisioned him saying… check out the Big Bang Theory episode from last week, S7E14. JEJ features prominently and is HILARIOUS. I had no idea.

    • SophiaPehawkins

I don’t think that’s her hair color, but the rest is cute. I need those shoes in my life.

    • sojourneryouth

Super cute. I always love b & w plaid with a pop of red, and the whole outfit really seems to suit her style well.

    • Anna

Love everything about this. Those loafers and I are going to ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after.

      • littlemac8

Well, where are you going to get them? I want the size six so I think we can both have them if we can find them!!

    • @Biting Panda

      So good. Attagirl!!

    • Sarah

I do not like those hats, no sir. They are so ubiquitous where I live, and have been for about a year, that I cannot stand them. Particularly because in the dog days of High 110+ Summer, kids will STILL rock them with their carefully arranged not-a-hairdo-hipster-hairdos and skinny jeans. Her outfit is nice, though; she looks good.

      • FrigidDiva

They have also been uber-popular in my area as well. I always wonder, how bad does their hat and head smell during the summer after sporting those hats? Can they get athletes head or swamp head from sweating so much under their hats? I really have too much spare time to ponder these things.

        • Sarah

I appreciate your ponderings, because Swamp Head is awesome. Athete’s Head sounds like a hat store, much in the vein of Athlete’s Foot. Only helmets and ballcaps. And swim caps…

      • Lower L

One of the authors at Put This On referred to the slouchy-hat-on-hipster-dude look as “The Reservoir Tip.”

        • Sarah

Oh, how deliciously apt. I cannot wait to use that!

        • majorbedhead

          That is an awesome description.

I loathe those hats. But the rest of the outfit is fabulous.

    • Grumpy Girl

Is it warmer in NYC? Why are there no trouser socks? My feet got cold in sympathy for her. (Really like the shoes and purse, though. Not so found of what looks like turned-up sleeves on the coat.)

      • alyce1213

It’s been ‘toasty warm’ at about 35-40 deg. Normal people need socks, celebrities apparently not.

    • marlie

Everything about this is adorable. I don’t love the shoes, but they work with the whole outfit. And I love the hat for covering up that awful dye-job.

    • FrigidDiva

To me that hat totally ruins the adorableness of this outfit. I’m not against a slouchy hat, but this one looks like it’s made out of an army blanket. I wouldn’t have minded seeing something in a black or gray for the hat, and for the love of all that’s holy, can we get some damn gloves!

    • KinoEye

Good to know my 7-year-old hat is back in style, though I’ve been wearing it regardless. J’adore le manteau.

    • Monabel

The coat is fresh and crisp, but not particularly interesting. The rest is OK, if you can stand those shapeless unbecoming hat-monstrosities.

    • MoHub

I’m such a sucker for a glen plaid.

    • boweryboy

I’m not entirely sold on the shoes, but I like the rest.

    • mjude

love the look. I could so wear that (always in my mind)

    • Alyssa

I like the ensemble, but I only like the hat from the front. From the side, it gives her alien head. I know slouchy hats are a thing, just not my thing.

    • teensmom99

      Shoe porn.

    • Lesley

love everything about this look but that hair. not loving her as a blonde

    • TwiddlyStun

My son has friends who wear the hipster variation on the “slouch hat.” When they were newly out, another mom asked me what they were called, hoping to find and order one online for her son. Not knowing what they were called, I said “douchebag hat” referring to the nature of the particular young men in the group who had started wearing them first. Apparently, she took me at my word, because she said “OMG, they *do* sort of look like douche bags.” I have not been able to get over this since.

      • Sarah

That is frikkin’ priceless. Thank you.

      • Gatto Nero

        You are pure evil.
        Thank you for that.

      • mjude

        VISUAL! LOL

      • jilly_d

Everyone can go home now; this story wins the internet for the day.

    • hughman

I can not with the Smurf Hat.

Nope, sorry, no way. Here in L.A. they are a def. dealbreaker when you see someone wearing one. Band member/actor/barrista.

      • KinoEye

The main reason I’ve worn my old, beat-up one lately is to keep my ears warm in the cold and wind (I get crazy earaches) or to hide the fact that my roots are growing in/hair wasn’t washed that morning. But I know the type you mean — the hipster kinds who wear them even in the summer, or “ironically.” Blech.

      • kimmeister

Now I’m humming, “La LA la la la la, LA la la la la . . . .”

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I love everything, except the hat and the hair. Take off her head and she looks great.

    • imspinningaround

Her stylist had Miroslava Duma on her mind when pulling these pieces.

    • altalinda

Slouchy hat = tribute to Pete Seeger, no doubt.

      • bellafigura1

Mmn, I don’t think so. My 23 year old NYC daughter has been doing the slouchy hat for a couple years now, it’s just migrated up to the fashionistas, as these things do. I think it’s grunge-redux. She also does a flannel shirt with leather skinnies and Docs.

    • Chickadeep

Adore everything she’s wearing EXCEPT that slouchy hat. Hate them. Think they look stupid. Unswayed by examples on otherwise fabulously fashionable folk. Apparently my fashion cross to bear for 2014.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I wish I liked her as much as I like this look. But all personal snarkiness aside, this is a fabulous look.

    • Rhonda Shore

And that’s the same hat Anne Hathaway was wearing in the posting from earlier this week…everyone may have them but i want one…

    • alyce1213

I adore glen plaid. I also love the zipper at the bottom of her pants leg. The hat works just fine with this outfit, and I’m glad she didn’t go matchy with it.
The massive chains on the loafers do’t do it for me. A pair of classic black Weejuns would’ve been just the thing.
      (Her hair is fried.)

    • mommyca

She looks fantastic! I tried to do the slouch hat (without knowing it’s trendy) but I don’t think it looks as good on me :)

    • Lori

She looks great, except for the dumb hat. Still, the idea of being so obviously styled to walk down the street will never stop seeming a little weird to me.

    • Jackie4g

That hat is the same as the one Nikita wore when they did her backstory in the opening credits of La Femme Nikita back in 1998. Now it’s new?

    • Kelly

Too bad I hate the slouchy hat — because it’s pretty much the only piece of clothing ever featured by TLo that resembles something I personally own. Still, it’s sort of fun to think that last week when I was digging out from Snowmageddon in parka and slouchy hat (which used to belong to my brother when he worked at an auto shop), I was actually showing my couture bona fides. Love the coat and purse.

    • MilaXX

I like everything from the neck down. That hat and that hair color clash horribly with the rest of the look.

    • Adrianna Grężak

I see variations of this look on the streets in NYC all the time, from top to bottom

    • SewingSiren

That hat looks like the one my dad used to wear under his hard hat in the winter when he worked at the steel mill.

    • http://vispreeve.tumblr.com/ Den Milano

      Love love love!

    • TheLaurenJean

I need those shoes! Anyone know whose they are?

      • LindyLoo

        Zara LEATHER MOCCASIN WITH CHAINS

        • lesmaha

          Thanks!!

        • TheLaurenJean

          THANK YOU!!!

      • littlemac8

        $146 on ebay

    • Snailstsichr

In the spirit of what I’ve been watching on TV lately, these hats belong on skiers and skateboarders who just came from performing. I will say, though, that other than the hat, I’d call this a gold-medal look.

    • Sabin

      1) I see the Portland hipster winter cap has apparently made its way into the fashion vernacular;

      2) This is skinny, upper-crust Tonya Harding. All. The. Way.

    • Paula Pertile

I wish the hat was a different color, but yeah, cute.

    • Jacob Bowen

My best friend wears a variation of this outfit EVERY DAY. It’s fine once and a while.

    • kimmeister

I’m apparently not fashionable enough to see how cuffing your coat sleeves to show 3″ of your cotton shirt sleeves looks good.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Her hair is a crime and the hat exacerbates it.

    • MzzPants

I love a good red bag.

    • jilly_d

I kind of hate her for looking so cute in that hat. It’s a good thing I’m not a Very Important Fashion Person, because I would look like a smacked ass in that headgear.

    • a_liking

love, even the hat, and unexpectedly the shoes. except the cuffed sleeves on the coat.

    • Annistella

*Ahem* I am new to posting, and all the social media stuff generally (I know) but I am a committed TLo reader. Could someone tell me how I attach my picture to comments? or direct me to the instructions?

    • Annistella

just a tad overcooked for me. It is the gold detailing on the shoes – too contrived when contrasted with the slouchy beanie. But those rolled cuffs, with the white sweater poking out underneath is perfect.

    • quiltrx

I hate the hat, sorry. It looks like it would smell, and make your hair hiddy too.
BUT OMG GRABBY HANDS AT THAT COAT! I’ll take the shoes, too, just because they would irritate my hubby.

    • prisma

That hat style will never be okay unless you are traveling around in a custom van selling weed.

    • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

      Agreed on all counts.

Certain bloggers, too, sport this slouchy knit hat. And they look dumb wearing it, in their kitchen, making cupcakes.

      Kate wears it right.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Thank you! That is the best thing I have ever heard.

      • Glam Dixie

Yeah, I will actually stop fast forwarding to watch that commercial, we all love it.

    • Jeremy Thomas Porta

This is one of those things I just don’t get. I am trying to see it but I simply have no strong feelings whatsoever.

    • Pablo

      Those shoes are pretty amazing

    • CeeQ

The contrast of slouchy coat and skinny pants is super cute, even if I don’t much like the style of the coat. Fabric – LOVE. The style though is like an over large blazer that I’m not loving. Or actually…….it reminds me of my high school blazer which never quite fit properly cuz of my narrow shoulders. Damn it. I can’t really rock a hat in any style, so I have no opinion on the hat….it’s a fashion disability I have….I need a fund raiser to raise awareness of the tragic life of women who can’t seem to look good in any kind of hat.

    • judybrowni

That slouchy hat is what the homeless people wear out here, but some of ‘em are my friends, so if the fashionistas wanna steal their look, okay, I guess.

I don’t get the red bag and spring coat with that hat, but she’s still pretty cute;.

    • SierraDelta

HATE the hat. Looks like she’s hiding Voldemort under there.

    • AlisonS

Am I the only one that sees Heather Chandler from the neck down? (A Heather would not be caught dead in that hat…)

    • Melanie

LOVE the menswear tailoring on that coat!

    • the_valkyrie

      Who makes these shoes??

    • Kent Roby

I love every single element here, and how perfectly they all work together.

    • ashtangajunkie

Love the coat, covet the coat.

    • melanie0866

I like everything EXCEPT the hat, which is ugly and doesn’t go at all.
