Coat Porn: Debra Messing on the “Today” Show

Posted on February 19, 2014

We’re calling this “coat porn” just to stick with today’s theme, but to be honest, we chose to spotlight this look for reasons other than her choice of outerwear.

Debra Messing makes an appearance on the “Today” Show at the Rockefeller Plaza in NYC.

That last shot is hilarious, but we honestly can’t tell if she’s in on the joke or not.

Don’t get us wrong; the coat is perfectly fine. We especially like the leather detail in the collar. But what caught our eye was how much personality and life this look has. Remember, we’re talking about someone whose personal style could best be described as dowdy, really dowdy, or Gumby. This is too disheveled for us to make a firm call, but from what we can see, it’s cute, colorful and flatters – all while not managing to add decades to her age, which a lot of her choices tend to do. Our only quibble is that the reds all tend to fight each other. There’s a way to do tone-on-tone reds, but this isn’t quite nailing it.

And we’re just gonna say it: It’s long past time for a hair consult. That color’s looking incredibly brassy and uneven, and we’d love to see her with something a little shorter and layered. It’s getting kinda wiggy up top.

*in my Karen Walker voice*….Honey, what’s happening here? What is this?

      • aeb1986

seriously. how many different colors and textures did she think she could make work in one outfit

      • zenobar

Looks like ya got mousse *and* squirrel.

      • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

There’s nowhere for my eye to rest…..

      • CeeQ

LOL! I am so hearing Karen.

    • conniemd

Very strange tone on tones indeed, rust red colored shoes, purple red vest, orange red dress and then brassy orange red hair. The reds clash horribly.

      • Kathy

The colors are a little different on my screen, but they definitely don’t look good together.

    • tallgirl1204

i dunno. Looks like she unbuttoned her coat at the last minute to do the “walk of ??? (what? pride? fame?)” so the people who gave her the under-outfit would maybe give her some more in gratitude. Camel is “meh” to me, and without seeing it buttoned the coat can do nothing else for me– it’s a camel mass, showing its camel-y lining– so much less fun than what is underneath. And I agree on the hair– grow that tired old color out, honey, and see what’s hiding under there!

    • crash1212

Best she’s looked in a long time. And, she’s totally in on the joke.

    • sugarkane105

I love all of the colors, except for the shoes. I especially like the necklace. Wish she had just gone for some black heels.

      • Tatiana Luján

Or boots or anythig but those shoes.

    • hughman

She’s kinda turned Baby Jane Hudson in how she’s absorbed her “Will and Grace” schtick into her life in hopes of always being that character.

      • decormaven

        [sniffles] Spot on.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

I just said Baby Jane Hudson before I even read yours!! (*High five for great minds thinking alike!*)

    • alyce1213

The coat is beautiful. The colors are what — Fauvist? (well, not the grey). This is good for her, and her hair looks great for a change.

    • deelup

Crazy and single, but fun Aunt.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

        Nailed it.

    • marlie

I like everything down to the knees. The grey tights and burgundy-ish shoes don’t work with the rest of the look, but I love the orange dress and purple blazer together. And the necklace ties everything together. Her hair doesn’t bother me, and this is the best her makeup has looked in a long time.

Also, she and Amy Adams should play sisters in something.

      • MilaXX

I like the tight/shoe combo but not with this outfit.

      • SugarSnap108

I love that orange and purple together, which is a combo I would never guess I’d like. I like the grey tights/burgundy shoes, too, but they have nothing to do with the rest of the outfit.

      • YoungSally

Agreed on the tights — I have a very similar pair from Uniqlo…sure her tights are more expensive….but I think mine were like $4.90 or whatever on sale….and they are HEATTECH!!!

      • https://twitter.com/#!/marla_melendez eme and azul

yes, yes to all style assessments!

and Amy and Debra did play (half) sisters in The Wedding Date, but Amy was blond – really, really blond, kind of icy looking (only style gods know why)

        • marlie

          I forgot about that movie!

    • Sally Spannagle

Love the outfit but I despise those tights, especially with the shoes. If she had a cute bootie that would be different.

    • marlie

Can I just add that I appreciate that she has enough sense to wear tights in this weather, and I like them, but just not with the rest of the outfit.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Yes, definitely love that she wore tights. Although – probably from too many years of wearing grey tights at school – I think they look a little juvenile on her.

        • Skippymom1

          THIS^

        • marlie

Wait – I wore grey tights yesterday!! (Though yes, I wore them with my school uniform many, many years ago as well.)

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I wear them sometimes too, although I try to always get them a darker shade of grey than the school ones were!

    • @Biting Panda

      ALLLLL I’m seeing is CRAZY.

      • demidaemon

Then Debra has done her job here.

    • hillmad

Can’t get over how faded her hair looks. Distracts from the whole outfit to me.

    • Liz

I’m giving her an “Attagirl”. This is the best she’s looked in ages and as a natural redhead, I am impressed at how good the orange looks on her. I never try.

    • ashtangajunkie

I’m not sure why anyone in their right mind would pair the top half with the bottom half of this look. Love the coat though.

    • Carleenml

from one old redhead to another…”gurrrrrrrl, let it go.”

    • Sam Smith

Coat, tights and smile are all winners, the rest is a down vote and the hair really needs help. I’m not sure what she is going for, Lucille Ball red? Its horrible it looks like the Kool Aid Man threw up on her head.

    • RussellH88

At least she doesn’t look like a mess with crazy eyes.

    • MilaXX

I’m just ready to applaud her for wearing tights in winter. As for her hair, oddly enough she’s a long time Ted Gibson customer. The same guy who does Lupita’s hair. I think he also does Christina Ricci. Somehow when he post pictures of Debra’s hair it looks great and her personal appearances are hit or miss.

      • NinaBoo

I’m going to say it. At some point in life, middle parts do not serve the face. For example, if one has a very long, narrow face. One can wear her hair however she damn well chooses, but long and narrow is not usually helped by a center part.

Another example is our friend, Ms. Messing. Girl, you’re a year younger than I so I feel pretty cool with saying this. It looks like you’re trying a touch too hard to capture your gorgeous Will & Grace mane of red. Cool. I get it. But those days are done and it’s not like you got ugly. But you’re changing and I’m thinking a better color, cut, and styling would do you a world of good and you will look fierce. Your hair won’t look so brassy and Baby Jane-ish.

(SJP, wouldn’t kill you to rethink as well.)

        • formerlyAnon

Were I doing hair triage I’d book SJP in for the life (& hair) changing consult ahead of Ms. Messing.

          • NinaBoo

            Word.

And while at it, I would speak truth about needing to let the black eyeliner go.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

She does look better here than she has in quite a while even though there seems to be a little too much going on here. Plus she looks really happy. And now I must go out and see if I can find a deal on a new coat. They’re all on sale now, right?

    • Adrianna Grężak

It’s warm in NYC today compared to the Polar Vortex we just experienced – isn’t she hot? And I’m normally freezing once it’s 30 degrees.

I like how she’s super confident/happy in this outfit.

    • Mismarker

I can’t look at her without thinking of SMASH. And for that, she will never be forgiven.

      • demidaemon

To be fair, there were a lot of offenses within that show. She’s just one of them, and I am much more inclined to direct my rage at the girl who was on AI whose name I forget and tried to make Smash her star vehicle.

        • Mismarker

My comment may have been a teensy bit hyperbolic. Honestly, I’m disappointed the show was not better all the way around. The musical theater nerd in me so wanted it to be something worth watching.

          • demidaemon

That’s okay. I think everyone involved with the show deservedly got a bit of career backlash. Debra is probably doing the best out of all of them, or she’s just the most willing to show her face after such a flop.

    • boweryboy

Nothing goes together at all, but it’s refreshing to see a celebrity dressed weather appropriate.

    • Gatto Nero

I’m *almost* buying the purple and orange combo — but not with those shoes. Love that she’s actually wearing tights in the freezing cold.
And may I say how lovely it is that she hasn’t cut and pulled her face to bits.
(I think she’s in on the joke.)

    • Janet B

I wish she had just buttoned up her coat.

    • mjude

I love her just for wearing tights…FINALLY.

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

      Yep…channeling Lucy ….

    • Alyssa

I love the necklace. I also applaud her for wearing tights in the midst of winter, but these tights seem wrong for this outfit to my eye…wrong color, wrong texture. And for her sake, I hope she’s in on the joke!

    • MissusBee

I miss Grace Adler. When Smash was on, I happened to catch a rerun of W&G just after watching it, and I was like ‘Wow, Grace-Debra is so much more fun than, um (slaps head) Julia! Julia-Debra.’

Ironically, Grace wore hiddy clothes and Julia had some nice things. When the show tanked there were some cashmere sweaters and boots and stuff they should have boxed and sent to me.

    • susu

Love it! In fact, this is that rare celeb look that resembles something I’d actually wear (the tights especially). Ironically, the only thing I don’t care for (with the outfit or on its own) is the coat.

    • Skippymom1

I don’t see how the “reds” are sort of working together. Is it my screen? The shoes are red/burgundy, but isn’t the dress orange and the jacket purple? With grey tights? I guess she was trying to pull those colors up to her necklace? How does any of this work at all, except the lovely camel coat to cover up the mismatch of the outfit on top with the tights and shoes on bottom. Oh, and the coat does help distract from her hair.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

…and I just reviewed some of her greatest hits and I’ll just say MORE LIKE THIS HONEY. But do get that hair consult. (And please be in on the joke.)

    • Surely

She is definitely in on the joke.
      HATE the hair.

    • nannypoo

I’m sure she’s in on the joke. How could she not be? I love this outfit but I would like to see more casual footwear. And yes her hair is awful.

    • lunchcoma

I’d agree that the colors aren’t getting along, but I like all of the pieces individually and am particularly fond of the tights.

    • schadenfreudelicious

In that second to last shot (without my glasses), she looked like she was holding a glass of wine which might explain the odd colour pairings :)

    • beebee10

she’s a great gal and looking so sassy and happy!

    • Cee Layton

Those tights make her legs look like Rigor mortis has fully set.

    • formerlyAnon

She looks great. Or great-ish. The burgundy & orange I am pretty sure will be a disaster with the coat off, but with it on the orange looks like quite a cute little dress and I can ignore the jacket. Don’t care, even though I can be queen of the matchy. Her hair’s looked better.

The tights and shoes are a thing of beauty together. Best regarded from the back, with no glimpse of the ensemble under the coat, though.

    • NJtoLAMary

I think she’s lost some weight since the dowdy, really dowdy and gumby phases. That’s at least part of why she looks better by comparison. I like the orange and purple, hate the shoe color. I’ve been watching some W+G reruns lately and some of the wardrobe choices were pretty hideous. I”m thinking gold leather skirt and bomber jacket episode. Ew.

    • E. D.

I hate the tights with the rest of it! Agreed on the hair, it needs SERIOUS help.

    • e jerry powell

We’re about a month into that hair color, yeah…

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I kind of dig that color combo, personally. I like the red-orange and brownish purple together, and the neutrals keep it grounded while separating the dark red and doing a nice interplay between red and grey (which are my high school colors so I’m slightly biased I suppose). It’s an autumnal color scheme that works for me – foliage-tastic!

    • quiltrx

I really like the leather detail on the coat collar, too. And I agree, this hair color/style is past its sell-by date for her…it’s really starting to be aging.

    • GorgeousThings

Debra, honey, we need to chat. I say this with love, because I have been in your place. My hair used to be that color, with exactly the same heavy look at the ends and the same pinkish tinge at the roots. Give up the red, dear. Trust me. Now, you don’t want to do it the way I did (chemotherapy is highly overrated), but a gradual lightening to something that isn’t so 1- dated and 2- aging. I say this as the voice of experience. I actually look, while not ‘younger’, at least not as desperate to appear younger, now that my hair is its natural color.

The other great thing about getting away from red? A whole new world of wardrobe colors open up to you!

You’re welcome dear heart. Stop by when you’re in Boston and we’ll have tea.
      Auntie Ann

    • Jecca2244

we were snowed in over the weekend and watched 10 episodes of Will and Grace on Saturday night. and all i kept saying was how awful Grace’s clothes were. life imitating art.

    • LMGordon

Too many rings. I don’t get that trend.

    • Qitkat

This is a love/hate ensemble for me. I love each piece individually. But the orange is so focus-pulling, it overwhelms everything for blocks around. You could spot her through a foggy day in a whirling snowstorm with gale force winds.

I’m not one to know from hair, over/under/badly/awesomely colored hair; I just know I’ve never seen her without long red hair, it’s almost a signature look for her, that if she changed it too much, I’m not sure how well that would work. It would turn her into someone else. Like if SJP showed up with Katy Perry’s earlier post ‘do.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I agree about the hair. Her and SJP need an intervention. Remember on Will and Grace when Jack asked her if she relied on her hair too much? m’yeah…..
I gotta say though that I cannot get behind the dress. The color is brassing her out even more. But I do appreciate the personality of the ensemble. And I am SURE the last shot is her ‘in on the joke’.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

(is that a dry cleaning tag?)

      • NYCGlamourpuss

        (GASP!) Ooooohhhh….

    • Tatiana Luján

I liked everything until I saw how the tights and shoes look together.

    • Mars Tokyo

Awful combination except for the coat. If only she’d kept it closed and done something else with her legs and feet.

    • Clash D

The way she wore that coat in the first few photos make me sad.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I’m getting an updated “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane 2014″ remake vibe here. Seriously, like if it just didn’t matter that in the remake, Baby Jane Hudson is a redhead instead of a blonde, this would be the look.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

I think the hair is OK-ish, face is great, I like the orangey dress (based on what I can see of it), I would’ve even accepted the shoes, but the tights and blazer – NO, HONEY, PLEASE, NO.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I think her hair appears wiggy on top because her locks are naturally curly. I’ve noticed this with a few famous natural curly heads like Nicole Kidman. They get it straightened and the curls are dieing to come out and reveal themselves – almost like a lumpy mattress. Not that it looks like that on La Messing, but it’s getting there. I do agree, she could use a little more luster in her hair and a new look. But I do adore her and wouldn’t care if she didn’t change a thing.

    • CeeQ

The only thing I really love are the shoes – which, come on, who doesn’t love a patent red pump?
