Coat Porn: Cobie Smulders in Katharine Kidd on the “Late Show with David Letterman”

Posted on February 19, 2014

Cobie, you’re gorgeous. Cobie, we want you to come over to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. permanently and save that show from collapsing completely. And Cobie, we love what you’re wearing here. But Cobie, this is not how we would have played it:

Cobie Smulders at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City for an appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman” in a Katharine Kidd Spring 2014 ‘Myrtle’ top and ‘Adonis’ skirt paired with a black and grey coat and YSL suede pumps.

Everything here is great. Really. Love the dress and the shoes and SERIOUSLY love the coat. But we don’t actually think they combine well in pictures. No one needs to pick a coat that goes with their outfit. As long as they don’t clash, you’re good to go. But when you’re being photographed, you probably should think about how they blend visually. And if, like here, they don’t really blend all that well (because one is light and springtime and the other is dark and winter; one is a floral and the other is a bold plaid), then you should think about closing your coat. In other words, love the look, but we think she’d look far more dramatic all buttoned up. You can show off the outfit when you’re on TV. This is the moment to show off the coat.

Walking over frozen slush in the gutter wearing platform stilettos!

      • SugarSnap108

She has skills and courage that I will never possess.

      • BerlinerNYC

Just one more reason she really should’ve been Wonder Woman.

        • Rand Ortega

          GASP!!!!
          WTH, DC? WTH!

        • Mismarker

She voices Wonder Woman in the LEGO Movie. But I’m guessing that’s not what you meant! : )

          • BerlinerNYC

lol. Right. She was Joss Whedon’s first choice for the WW project that ended up falling through several years ago. I have to assume her voice casting for the Lego-WW is an inside joke based on that. She’s really one of the most stunning women on TV. Surprised she hasn’t cashed in by doing makeup or fashion ads, since she’s surely been approached.

            • Mismarker

She’s striking for sure and she’s got this cool confidence that is really kind of special. I hope she has a long, prosperous career when HIMYM finally ends.

            • http://pianofingernails.blogspot.com/ Laura King

I think she was a model before she was an actress? Maybe she’s not excited to go back that direction yet.

      • ralish

And they’re suede! I’m guessing they’re loaned– I wouldn’t want to have to clean them afterwards!

        • lunchcoma

I feel sorry for those poor shoes. They deserve better.

        • alyce1213

I’d go barefoot over the snow mound rather than ruin suede shoes, even if they’re loaners. It’s a travesty.

      • YoungSally

At least she had the sense to have someone hold her wrist. It is really miserable out there — especially because the stuff that was formerly snow — has managed to attain a certain semi-solid state that changes constantly — it looks like it was hard pack when she walked on it — but 10 seconds after it might have become an old-lady eating pile of quick-sand (quick-snow?).

      • CeeQ

Sharp breath in-take when I saw that pic. I’d have face planted.

    • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

The first thing I thought when I saw those shoes was how the hell did she navigate those piles of snow. Nice to see a pic of how it’s done. I think that dress is too spring-time for the coat, they just don’t look right together.

    • RussellH88

It looks kind of messy all together. Too many competing prints.

    • http://www.domesticdisturbia.com/ Christi Wampler

She has never looked prettier, though. And those shoes are kind of my whole world right now.

      • StarburstLady

Seriously. I covet her lip color.

      • kimmeister

She’s so gorgeous but tends to not photograph well. Here, her face looks luminous. I guess you just have to take her off of the red carpet and get her in some candid shots.

    • cocohall

I cannot improve upon the Uncles commentary. Exactly right on all points. The coat is giving me some Hudson Bay blanket realness. She is getting better looking as she gets older. Or maybe just more comfortable in her skin. Whatever, she looks amazing.

    • SugarSnap108

LOVE the coat, and I’m pretty I’ll love the dress if I see it again in a few months.

    • Alyssa

My goodness, she is gorgeous. I do really like the outfit, and really like the coat, but they should not be displayed together. It hurts my eyes.

    • lobsterlen

It may have worked if she had button the coat.

    • jw_ny

I do agree that it’s the time to show off the coat, and I like the coat, but it looks like it may be on the shapeless side if it were closed…idk. Open, she exudes kind of a carefree vibe, and the pop of color in the midst of dreary NY Feb is refreshing (although perhaps the dress is too spring-ish, and the patterns do rather clash.) So I guess I’ve mixed feelings on this. I do know that I get a good feeling from this, and that she looks lovely. :)

    • crash1212

      Want that coat.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

      I love that coat.

    • Jessica Freeman

I really would have liked the dress and make up for the warmer parts of the year. I will chose to just enjoy the coat for now.

    • mjude

I love the coat, but I love a full buttoned up look…always

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Now THAT is a terrific coat. That dress is too “spring” for it, though.

      • marlie

My first thought was “Easter,” but yes, in total agreement with you about the dress.

    • deelup

I like it the way it is. It’s kind of a boxy shape coat and seeing the form fitting dress underneath gives a nice contrast. But I still would’ve buttoned it… And added a scarf… and leggings… And a hat… Cause it has been fricking freezing! :)

    • jilly_d

      That coat is *beyond*.

    • Lilithcat

Coat is fabulous, but, true, it doesn’t work with the dress.

Hate the shoes. Hate any shoes that make women look as though they have hooves rather than feet.

    • Chickadeep

SUEDE SHOES IN FROZEN SLUSH! NO! Sorry, I’m having a hard time moving on from that thought. Ahem. Okay, seriously adore the coat. Agree that it doesn’t work with that dress, at least not open like that.

    • Gatto Nero

The uncles have said it perfectly. Button up and put on a scarf.
Is the coat Katharine Kidd, too, or someone else?
      It’s fabulous.

    • giddypony

CRipes I hate those shoes with that outfit. I mean I hate them periods but the grey just washes out her springtime girl finery and have a mental what the fuck with the coat and weather

    • lunchcoma

I almost gave her some Regular People Points for wearing a jacket regardless of what was underneath. Then I realized she’s walking around with it open in cold weather and is wearing high heels in the slush on top of it. If you’re going to put on a performance, then yeah, make sure things coordinate.

      • MilaXX

and bare legs, come on stylist, five the lady stars some boots or outfits that work with tights. It’s winter in NYC and a fairly cold one at that.

        • lunchcoma

Great point. I can kind of see how the stars go bare on the red carpet, where everyone pretends it’s warm even if it’s chilly. But she’s walking around on the street in New York, and there are so many interesting things that can be done with boots or legwear. Why not take advantage of it and stay a little warm?

    • formerlyAnon

You said all that needed be said. Buttoning the coat would have allowed us to revel in it.

    • KinoEye

My first thought, too — buttoning that fabulous coat would have fixed everything. Definitely sending mixed messages with the winter on top, springtime underneath vibe. Hate the shooves, but love the color.

      • schadenfreudelicious

        Shooves, perfect term!!

      • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Poor shooves! Ugly as they are, they didn’t deserve to die in the slush!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I’d mug her and leave her naked in the cold for those pieces.

    • msdamselfly

I think the whole outfit works really well. The contrast between the coat and the dress gives pause to the look and enhances the coat.

    • Mismarker

I sometimes try to guess what the uncles will think of a look before I read the post. Today, we’re totally on the same page. This would have been an unequivocal style win if she’d buttoned the coat. Does anyone know if this is the outfit she wore on the show? It seems a little too “ladies who lunch” for late night tv.

    • Beth Swartz

Totally agree about the S.H.I.E.L.D. comment. . .for some reason, I keep watching, hoping the storyline will improve, that it will turn into a geek-fest for me–but nope. It remains poorly written and conceived.

    • MilaXX

A black pencil skirt instead of the one we see here and this could work. Also if the standard is bare legs now, please don’t show the lady celebs ready to bust ass on nasty city snow. Even her fake tan can’t keep her legs from looking cold and freezing. As for Agents of Shield, I feel like are trying but the kinda screwed themselves with so much Boring Skye Bennett and taking too long to remember they’re a superhero action show.

    • Diego!

It looks like a blanket to me. I LOVE those shoes. Her dress is kinda odd. I agree they don’t match at all when together.

    • GoAwayKardash

Am I alone in this? I love the whole outfit WITH the coat!

    • Sam Smith

If she closed up the coat it would be perfect, no one would no that her outfit underneath didn’t go with it. Plus she probably would be warmer.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Agree 100%. I’m imagining the coat buttoned, with just those shoes showing, and I’m sighing big sighs of beauty.

    • mrspotts66

      now, i like that coat!!

    • Sophie

The coat seems to only have two buttons at the waist, maybe she doesn’t like the way it buttons up? I rather like the contrast between the summery colours and the dark coat around. The picture of her bare legs next to the heaps of snow is ridiculous.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Now, THAT is coat porn. {drool}

    • quiltrx

That coat wants to come live at my house!
I have to roll my eyes at those shoes. Would have served her right if she had fallen on that ice. It’s okay to wear practical shoes outside and put the nice ones on when you’re inside.

    • StillGary

the colors look nice together but at first glance it looked like a robe & nightgown.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

those shoes look great both with the coat and with the dress, but it is scary to see her walking on ice in them.

    • Trickytrisha

Ugh. Those shoes are butt ugly, the dress is shapeless (and orange) and the coat looks like a 9 foot tall lumberjack loaned her his jacket.

    • Sally Spannagle

She would have looked perfect if she were wearing a slim light camel colored walking coat!

    • demidaemon

      EXACTLY.

      • Qitkat

AND AGAIN. Too much eye twitching.
I do love love those grey suede heels.

    • antonialee

      That coat is gorgeous.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

      LOVE the plaid coat.

    • CeeQ

I admire her courage in walking on, basically, ice in those shoes but I really dislike the shoes and think they ruin the look.
