Coat Porn: Amy Adams in Zuhair Murad Couture and Max Mara at the BAFTA Nominees Party

Posted on February 19, 2014

We love a good cream-and-white winter ensemble.

Amy Adams attends the 2014 BAFTA Awards Nominees Party in London in a Zuhair Murad couture lace dress paired with a Max Mara cream coat and Christian Louboutin heels.

And accessorizing with a touch of gold was a great idea. But flimsy little open-toed shoes do tend to look a little silly paired with such substantial outerwear. Of course, Miss Amy’s only one in a long line of ladystars who think nothing of braving the cold in bare legs and mostly bare feet. And while we really love the coat, we question whether it pairs well with such a lightweight, lacy dress. Like we said, we love a good cream-and-white look, but matching is about more than just colors. It’s about textures as well. And pairing heavy wool with light, springtime lace just looks odd to us.

Love the earrings and the lip color.

    • FrigidDiva

Love the coat, love the dress, I just don’t love them together. Oh, and her lipstick is tragic. It looks like she chewed it off in the limo.

    • LuisaNL

what’s with the crazy cat lady hair?!

    • Grumpy Girl

I thought it’s preferable to have a coat at least close in length to the dress underneath? Is that too old fashioned? It’s not like it’s short enough to be a short jacket; the length juxtaposition just seems odd to me.

      • Jessica Freeman

I would agree with you to keep the coat and dress length close. I practice this rule myself.

      • unbornfawn

Yup. This coat would probably pair better with pants.

      • DaringMiss

I am possibly old-fashioned as well. I think that if the coat hem matched the dress, it would have been terrific!

      • kimmeister

I think the lengths are different enough for her to get away with it. When the dress is, say 6″ longer than the coat, that’s when it looks ungainly to me.

      • jabes

Wearing a cocktail dress, especially, I think it’s going to look much better with the coat the same length or longer than the dress. Here it just looks like she has a paltry coat collection and doesn’t own the correct coat to wear with the dress!

    • VioletFem

This just looks awkward. The pieces are pretty on their own, but not as part of one outfit.

    • Jessica Freeman

I think the coat is lovely, but not paired with the dress.

    • Ginger

Take that gorgeous coat and ditch everything else in this look, including the hair.

    • luludexter

Seems to me if you are going to wear a coat like that, you need something more substantial and a little more casual underneath, a darker color dress or skirt — the proportions here work for me but not the fabrics. If she was going for some kind of high/low contrast it didn’t work. And girl, if you’re going to wear a wool coat please put on some shoes that don’t show your toes! That just looks ridiculous on anyone — like a high school girl who doesn’t want to ruin her outfit with a coat…

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I wonder if she had the leaf/feather belt thing on under there? That’s my favourite bit of the dress in the runway look. I’d keep the coat and probably choose a different dress.

      • prisma

Oooh. Yes. I think the leaf belt makes it.

      • JauntyJohn

I was thinking the same thing.

    • alyce1213

It’s gorgeous, but the jacket (car coat?) length is too casual for the lacy dress.
For me, there’s a disconnect wearing winter coats with bare legs.

    • appliquer

      Ouch, my feet!

    • msdamselfly

That coat is gorgeous, as is the dress

    • Diego!

I love this whole look. She looks fresh. Except her old aunt hair. That sucks. But without staring at her hair, she looks great!

    • Anna

Gorgeous coat, dress isn’t really my taste but I think seeing it in a non-winter context might make me like it a bit better. The close-up photo is scaring me.

      • Alyssa

Her expression in the close up looks like a kid who played dress up and wants mom’s approval…”look at me, don’t I look fabulous?!”. That angle is not a good one for grown-ups.

        • Anna

Ha, I was struggling to describe it, went to get a second cup of coffee and still couldn’t come up with anything other than scary. You got it!

And yes, I’ve been a victim of that angle, not pretty for anyone, mere mortal and celeb alike.

    • KinoEye

The textures do clash, but girl was made to wear that Max Mara. I get the feeling that even though she’s been an established actor for years now, she still hasn’t found the right style team to create an “Amy Adams” look. She gets the Nicole Kidman-lite criticism here all the time because she doesn’t look like herself — however that might look. She is gorgeous and so very talented, but I’d like to see her be more declarative in her personal style.

    • JP

      Is she going gray?

      • Gatto Nero

        I think it’s a light reflection.
But it wouldn’t be tragic if she were.

        • JP

Agreed. Nothing wrong with gray; I was just trying to figure out if it was a deliberate choice, lighting, or my bad eyesight!

    • marlie

Aside from the dress being so lightweight and the coat being so heavy, I also think the coat is too casual for the dress. That’s what catches my eye more than the lightness/heaviness.

    • Cheryl

Her legs have the mottled look that one gets when pale and very cold. Seriously, what is wrong with a little more substantial shoe and maybe even hose? Those shoes also call attention to her bunions. But I’m glad just to see her out of the disco slut dresses.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

This look on the model is stunning. That look on Double A is a mom forgetting that the kids go to school at 8 a.m. and throwing a coat on over the cocktail dress she passed out in.

    • kimmeister

I wouldn’t consider that coat cream, more like beige. I see cream and white when the uncles talk about clashing whites (which I agree, they totally clash).

    • Amanda Welliver

      Frumpy.

    • KT

      ugh.

    • MannahattaMamma

Her feet cannot WAIT for awards season to be over.

    • MilaXX

Evrything sort of clashes. This coat isn’t giving me coat porn because it doesn’t work again an outfit that should be worn in July. This pairing is even worse than Colbie’s.

    • Daisy77

Okay, nice coat and whatnot. Really. But that second shot? When did she actually TURN INTO Nicole Kidman? Kinda freaking me out.

      • Joanna

Seriously, she is becoming increasingly Nicole . . . do we know why? Is Amy on the Botox train, too?

        • martha

I think she has had some filler put in her lips

    • Gatto Nero

The coat looks luxurious. Love the big, bracelet-length sleeves.
But the dress fabric is a needle scratch with this.
The shoes are too flimsy, and are probably making those bunions ache.

    • Yolanda13

I need that coat in my life (and in my closet!). But I agree – the lacy dress paired with the coat is a very odd look indeed.

    • In_Stitches

That second shot, she IS Nicole Kidman. There’s the same frozen forehead and eyes with a smile a little too large to be genuine…

As for the outfit, I’d call it a well put together look. The seasonal discrepancies don’t bug me. I like the mix of textures and color.

    • formerlyAnon

Agree. Looks like she threw a random coat on over what she was wearing to run out and check the mail. And there was nothing random about this.

    • paintedfish

i think that coat should be longer for a dress. that looks like trouser length coat to me.

    • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

      Owwww her poor feet!

    • quiltrx

Like some others said, I think this coat would look better with pants.
And a HUGE WTF to all these ladystars who insist on wearing their EASTER DRESS under a (needed and appropriate) heavy coat!!!! Sometimes you have to say no to your stylist, to avoid looking foolish.

    • ashtangajunkie

That coat deserves better than that outfit. Or what we can see of it anyway.

    • murt

Completely agree – so weird to see that heavy wool coat with filmy lace, bare legs and open toed shoes.

    • Noah

Personally, I think we’re starting to get a bit too generous with the term “coat porn.”

    • boweryboy

No. Not loving it. Amy, on the other hand, looks quite pleased with herself.

    • lundibleu

Individually the pieces look good, but I don’t think they work together. Especially as the coat looks about 3 sizes too big and the shoes a size too small.

    • Columbinia

Maybe Hollywood stylists don’t do coats. Maybe they’re so used to procuring and showing the dress and accessories that pairing it all with a coat that goes is beyond their skills. Most of the coats today seem to be afterthoughts.

      • jabes

That makes me so sad. I’m an Imelda Marcos of coats. Waaaaay too many. And yes, I wear almost all of them at least once a year (my parka and my floral embroidered cream colored coat don’t get a lot of wear). Living in Chicago helps . . . I guess there’s not a lot of call for wearing coats in southern California, but if you’re a professional stylist, you should have enough taste to be able to figure it out, right?

    • fursa_saida

I don’t know quite why, but after seeing the dress in full I am desperate for Lucy Liu to wear it.

    • DeTrop

Seriously. This is an odd pairing. The jacket is fine & the dress is beautiful but not together. Who comes up with these ideas?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The coat is great, would look better paired with a more seasonally appropriate dress and shoes.

    • LMGordon

Please put on some hose and closed shoes. It’s February.

    • Qitkat

So much better with this shade of lipstick than that danger red that she likes so much. I like her in softer looks, but the coat seems so bulky. It’s a beautiful dress though, as lace dress go, especially with the eye-catching gold leaves belt, which we don’t even know if she is wearing.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

She is all ‘springtime’ with a coat thrown over it. I agree about loving white and cream but this is wrong.

    • antonialee

I don’t like this at all.

    • superemang

as a person from the tropics, all these rules about coats is alien to me, although perhaps I should keep these in mind, should I decide to move to somewhere with 4 seasons in the future…
