Cate Blanchett in Sydney

Posted on February 20, 2014

Darlings, February is apparently the month for pink coats. Jan Jo tried it. Gaga tried it. But of course, it takes a Cate to make it look fabulous.

Cate Blanchett arrives at Sydney Airport.

Well, maybe not drop-dead fabulous or anything, but still. It’s a sweet little coat in a head-turning color. And yes, Cate Blanchett wears sweat pants on planes. She just manages to look better than most of the rest of the world when she does it.

she looks happy to be home

      • leahpapa

Could anyone more familiar with the Sydney airport than I comment on the yellow horse in the background? My guess it that it’s a fixture in the terminal/arrivals area, but I’m having so much fun developing a backstory for the passenger in that line who is going to attempt to check that thing.

        • hillmad

My guess is it’s for the Lunar/Chinese New Year: Year of the Horse. I see Chinese writing on it and little paper lanterns are hanging above it.

          • leahpapa

Ah yes! Which reminds me – I really need to stop writing Year of the Snake on my checks.

          • KateShouldBeWorking

I read that as Lunar Cheese Year. Time for lunch, me thinks.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Every year is Lunar Cheese Year.

            • KateShouldBeWorking

Fantastic news! I’ve been doing it right this whole time.

            • kimmeister

The moon is made out of cheese, after all.

      • KinoEye

Well, I’ll be damned — I always thought she was British, for some reason. Hurray for Hollywood Aussies!

    • 3boysful

I wish I could pull off that sweater-over-coat thing.

    • Glam Dixie

This is how I imagine I look in my sweats.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

        Oh, honey. Don’t we all?

    • Scimommy

Cate Blanchett is validating my choices of color combos. Thanks, Cate, I needed that!

      • KinoEye

I’ve always liked pink and gray together. That, or a good pink and brown combo. Always lovely.

        • cocohall

Right.! Grey or brown take down the sugar a notch or two and take pink into the land of sophistication.

        • NYCGlamourpuss

I like pink and gray very much, but I love pink and brown – that’s a great combo!

    • @Biting Panda

Bless her for wearing this! Flying around the world in leather pants and spiked boots, just makes the celeb in question look like a try hard idiot. And la Blanchett will NEVER be a try hard idiot.

      • H2olovngrl

Right? She still looks stylish, but also cozy and warm! A must for a long flight!

    • leahpapa

This is a deceptively easy look, because despite the fact that the pieces themselves are casual, the gestalt of easygoing, practical chic she pulls off is the result of finely cultivated pieces. I mean, DAT BAG. The lux fabric of the coat. Those may be sweats, but they are damn good ones. Well played, King Cate.

      • jen_vasm

Easygoing, practical, most delicately-spun cashmere sweatpants & sweater imaginable, I presume.

        • SRQkitten

Yes! I had the distinct impression these are not the sweats I find in my closet. They’re way too fabulous looking.

    • Danielle

Those sunnies are all kinds of kooky but I am loving the pink coat.

    • SewingSiren

      Isn’t it Summertime in Sydney?

      • Nimith

The East/South East is experiencing a cold snap. It’s unseasonably cool for late Feb here.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

          So – 20-25C?

          • Nimith

Well it got down to 18C last night. That’s shorts and t-shirt weather for me. Maybe she just wanted to show off the coat?

    • alyce1213

I want to touch that coat! What a comfy, chic look for curling up on a long plane ride.

    • colorjunky

those are some weird shoes she’s wearing. Like the kind of slippers that my Aunt Nellie wore, they game in clear bags with a snap closure.

      • kimmeister

They look like the pocket flats that roll up and come in their own handy pouch, that you can keep in your bag in case your stilettos become unbearable.

        • colorjunky

          Right, that’s it!

        • decormaven

Thought that immediately when I spotted those flats. Would love to know the maker – all the ones I’ve seen look cheap IRL.

    • http://myriameron.blogspot.com/ Heron

      Those glasses tho

    • Jacob Bowen

Cate Blanchett is showing me sweatpants I could wear to teach!!! Must know where to get those!

      • sagecreek

I think this is where the car commercials insert something like, “For Professionals only, don’t try this at home.” :)

    • marlie

This is when my love for Cate turns into hate (of the best kind), because NO ONE else looks this good in sweats. No one.

      • kimmeister

On the one day in high school when I said “to heck with it” and wore sweats to school, my closeted gay-BFF told me, “Anyone else wearing sweats would look like a ragamuffin, but you actually look dignified.” Ok, so it’s not CB levels of good, but at least I wasn’t a ragamuffin. :-)

    • MilaXX

Cute but she looks like a JCrew ad.

      • marlie

        And that’s a bad thing? ;)

        • MilaXX

          not at all.

    • MoHub

      Isn’t it summer in Sydney?

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

She is wearing sweat pants, and a sweatshirt tied around her neck. And she looks like this. I give up.

      • sagecreek

It’s mostly genetics. That’s how I console myself.

      • Frank_821

Imagine what she’d look like in mom jeans :p

        • demidaemon

She might be able to make them the next trend!

    • Jen

Pale pink coats have been everywhere in the British shops in the last couple of months. It was nice at first but now everyone seems to be wearing the same colour!

    • Jessica Freeman

So glad I will never have the opportunity to deplane first class next to her. I think she emulates the exact opposite of what I look like after an international flight.

      • Janet B

I thought I looked okay after the last time I was on an airplane, but the photographic evidence says otherwise.

        • sagecreek

I used to have one of those huge denim dresses, the kind you wore with boots in the 90s? BEST AIRPLANE GARB EVER.

          • Janet B

Wore mine pregnant, could never wear it again. Which isn’t a bad thing.

        • Jessica Freeman

Any length of time on a place affects my overall appearance and mood. I can assure you, it is not pretty.

    • mjude

      love the airport look.

    • stephbellard

      She looks like Martha Stewart.

      • sagecreek

        Take that back!

        • demidaemon

          *rises up with sagecreek*

      • FrigidDiva

As much as I’d like to say “For shame!’, in that first picture it doesn’t quite look like Cate and I was trying to figure out who she resembled and I must say Martha Stewart is pretty close. But not the east coast Hamptons Martha, this would be the European Jetsetting version of Martha ;)

      • kimmeister

I got Cameron Diaz from the thumbnail.

    • another_laura

The grey, the pink, with her coloring, it’s just so perfect.

    • jen

I have similar sweat pants that I too wear out into the real world! Who knew I had so much in common with La Blanchett! ;)

    • Granny panties

She looks comfortable and stylish. Well done. Right now I’m actually wearing a cashmere sweatshirt. Well mine is an eatons brand men’s v neck. It’s super thick and soft, only slightly large on me as I washed in hot and put in the dryer, when I got home from the thrift shop I discovered this treasure at.
After a couple years of being a main lounging item, it got a hole. I patched it with a Canadian hockey player, just in time for Olympics.
      No cashmere pants though.

    • In_Stitches

Pale pink coats will never not look like house coats to me. That, coupled with the sweats, makes her look like a Nasonex commercial victim.

      • sagecreek

Your market is clearly getting a different Nasonex commercial than my market.

      • Imasewsure

So the Antonio Banderas Bee should be buzzing around her, collecting her luggage and helping her catch a cab… works for me

    • LaSylphide

Pink isn’t my favorite color by a long shot, but it looks better when paired with a good contrasting color, and the gray works well here.

    • cocohall

The flight to Australia, even if you are in first class, is epically long. . Being comfortably dressed so you can catch a few hours of sleep yet still look stylish is just plain smart. Love the pink and grey together.

      • sagecreek

I don’t even want to think about what I looked like when I got off the 17 hr flight to Delhi. Lucky for me, no one cared :)

      • TigerLaverada

Truth. I’ve made that jaunt many times myself, and it’s an endurance test. She looks great, and well put together — far better than I ever do in such circumstances, but then I doubt she’s crammed back in the cattlecar section.

    • Imasewsure

Love pink and grey (esp. cashmere). Looks cozy

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Chic Cate is Chic, even at the airport in sweatpants.

    • crash1212

Pink and grey = classic combo. I love her sweats and her comfy airplane shoes. Also, fabulous bag.

    • d4divine

She looks cozy And chic. Clap! Clap!

    • livesarah

I love it. I know celebrities fly a class above the rest of us plebs, but I still shake my head when I see someone getting off a plane dressed to the nines in tight, uncomfortable clothes. And knowing she came from a wintery climate, it’s good to see something weather-appropriate (because seeing celeb ladies’ bare little arms and legs in the middle of your northern winter really bothers me). But GODDAMN she must have melted into a puddle of sweat as soon as she stepped outside that airport. It is so HOT here that even air-conditioning wouldn’t help if you were dressed like that. I really hope she took that coat off as soon as she could!

    • snarkykitten

I can hear Tim Gunn disapproving of those sweats

    • quiltrx

      Wanting that bag!

    • Columbinia

Every bit of this look is pre-meditated and artfully put together despite the sweat pants and comfy knits.

    • MzzPants

Of course, they’re cashmere sweatpants that cost more than major surgery…

    • Gatto Nero

Sweet little coat, and looks great against all the greys (and those lovely Chloe ballerinas). She makes even comfy look chic.

    • GeoDiva

I have a pink trench coat I got about 5 years ago. Happy I can still wear it, cause its damn cute!

    • decormaven

I would love to review her travel schedule, because I bet she has logged a million miles in the last three months. And she looks this great after it all? Hope she enjoys some well-deserved home time with the fam before the last Oscars(R) push.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I love this outfit, sweat pants and all. It looks comfortable and chic. And cashmere, so… Did I say comfortable?

    • VicksieDo

Ah yes, and the shade of pink perfectly compliments her own lovely coloring. She does amaze.
