Carolina Herrera Fall 2014 Collection

Posted on February 11, 2014

The show notes said things about new proportions and exploring soft construction and volume, and that’s all well and good. But the collection itself said “regal” to us, like clothes fit for a modern day princess of some Hollywood movie version of a fictional European country, where princesses get to be a little bolder in their fashion and more direct in their carriage. In other words, this is a collection a bit too fabulous for Duchess Cathy to be allowed to wear, but it’s one that would look so insanely good on her that we just have to sigh and wish we lived in the Hollywood movie version of a fictional European country.

What we’re trying to say is, this collection is pretty, elegant, and strongly declarative at the same time. Love the prints and the shapes.

The teal toque for me please! And I think that first dress would be brilliant for Letizia of Spain, on the day her father in law abdicates.

      • kimmeister

It’s amazing, but I think one would need to whip out hat pins to keep it on. Or have a beehive ‘do stashed underneath.

        • foodycatAlicia

Bobby pins and a concealed comb sewn inside the brim.

          • whatladder

My sister-in-law made the hats. They have combs inside the bottom “in sort of a claw shape”.

            • foodycatAlicia

Wow! What a talented person to have in the family!

            • formerlyAnon

Okay, this is a waay sidetrack and I’ll understand if you don’t have time to answer. (But talking to people about their work is one of my favorite things.) How does that relationship work? Is she an independent contractor, does she work for Herrera full time, or does she work for a separate company that makes millinery?

      • JauntyJohn

THANK YOU for “toque!” I was struggling with what to call them. Fashion Fez? Bun Bucket?
The whole collection is brilliant but for me it’s totes toques!

        • foodycatAlicia

          I like Fashion Fez!

    • NMMagpie

That grey sweater is INSANELY hot. Must have.

      • Evan

I’m a guy (albeit a gay guy) and even I want it.

    • imperfectlaura

I’m pretty sure I’ve had dreams where I’m wearing the exact look with the grey sweater, black skirt, etc. and strutting around some city like the rich bitch I am in my dreams. Is this normal?

      • foodycatAlicia

Don’t know about normal but it sounds fabulous.

    • ChaCha_70

This is insanely gorgeous. If only I was rich…and thinner.

      • SierraDelta

If you’re rich enough, the designer will make you look thin enough!

    • msdamselfly

Meh Too obviously for the super-rich

    • Danielle

Hashtag NSFW because that is some serious coat porn.

    • hmariec19

    • EEKstl

Officially OBSESSED with that wine-colored jacket with the crazy hem and furry skirt and I don’t even know what the heck is going on there but I want it.

    • MilaXX

LOVE every single piece. I like a good navy/brown combo. *sigh* If only I was rich.

      • marlie

My “when I win the lottery” shopping list keeps getting longer and longer.

    • SierraDelta

Victoria of Sweden and Maxima of the Netherlands would rock these.

      • Imasewsure

Yes and the Swimmer Princess of Monaco could make these work pretty well too. Sad for Cathy Cambridge though… never going to happen for her unfortunately

        • alyce1213

Maybe — the royal blue long dress with small print for Cathy? I hate to shut her out completely from this prettiness.

          • foodycatAlicia

Cathy would rock the big grey sweater with her skinny jeans. And maybe the dark teal funnelneck dress that looks like astrakhan.

        • marlie

I think Cathy could wear the dresses with smaller prints, or the gowns with beading. But has she ever worn American (or non-British) designers?

      • formerlyAnon

Piffle. There’s plenty here for each of us. Especially the ones that will not see 25 again. No royalty need apply, the BKs have it covered. (Now, where’s that trust fund?)

        • SierraDelta

“Especially the ones that will not see 25 again.”

          Do multiples of 25 count?

          • formerlyAnon

They have to, to cover me. I was trying to be inclusive.;-)

    • Megan Kennedy

Anyone else getting a Russian vibe from some of these? That orange coat especially.

      • Daisy Walker

    • sagecreek

      I like!

    • KinoEye

Geometrically gorgeous. Dress #9 would be mine in a parallel universe.

    • Eovaai

    • filmcricket

Very pretty. A lot of this is FMO, though – those round shapes would just make me look like Humpty Dumpty’s rich sister.

    • Tatiana Luján

This is not for Cathy, but for the Monaco royals.

    • Wendi126

Shelly O could look fab in the white dress as long as she doesn’t add a cardigan.

    • joything

Wow. Wow, wow, wow, I am a bitch for these cape coats.

    • kimmeister

I suddenly feel like making a bunch of origami cranes.

    • Rand Ortega

21st century Alexis Carrington Couture. Love it. Especially the coats, capes & oversize sweaters.

    • YoungSally

Must have grey sweater top. Someone wealthy please buy it so I can get your “gently used” off ebay in a year or so.

    • Funkykatt

I like the geometric shapes but they look exactly like the eye floaters that give me headaches. I wasn’t able to look very long.

    • SugarSnap108

Carolina Herrera never disappoints. Even though there are pieces here I don’t necessarily like, I admire them.

    • TigerLaverada

      Love almost all of this.

    • a_liking

oh, love the long blue printed dress. alt-prairie chic :)

    • cindiaune

That collection gave me whiplash going from decade to decade :O
Each creation is a beautiful homage to the past

    • Anna

I love the skirt suits. In my next life when I’m a Hitchcock blonde a la Eva Marie Saint and I have a Cary Grant of my very own, this will be my wardrobe.

    • MemHey

      In conclusion: fezzes are cool.

    • Sunraya

Jeez, I usually love her collections, but I really don’t like much of this. I do love that last gown.

    • marlie

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous prints! And clearly, this season I’m all about the sophisticated, elegant and classic collections. There are so many beautiful and wearable pieces here.

    • Gatto Nero

I *love* the silhouettes and proportions. The fabric patterns are insane, especially the exploding houndstooth on acid. Fabulous styling.
The suits (jacket or sweater and pants/skirt combos) are killer.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I suppose it’s just because her post is next to this one, but I can’t help but think that Lupita Nyong’o would rock every single one of these, and especially the last one.

    • Sara__B

After looking at these photos I had to find a video of the clothes moving down the runway. Sigh. Such gorgeous fabrics and impeccable finishing.

    • quiltrx

So, I totally want that black cape-y thing at the top…though I’m fairly sure I couldn’t lift my arms far. But I would look so fabulous that I’m certain someone would reach for anything I might need.
And–though none of the colors are really wearable for me, I do LOVE these prints. Very graphic and original!

    • hmb

God, those floor length numbers are bad ass!

    • Diego!

She knows how to dress a woman. This is a superb collection. Long live Carolina! Simply chic and amazing!

    • Kayceed

Some of the red/blue prints read spring or resort to me – everything else is fantastic.

    • Jessica Freeman

Between her and Oscar de La Renta, they are the designers whose clothes I would buy all of if I ever get supremely rich.

    • conniemd

I love this collection. #11 and #17 in the snapshots would look great on Kathy. When I think of Carolina Herrera I think of feminine and beautiful. This is more edgy with fabrics that aren’t classically feminine prints and the boxy shapes also aren’t either, but somehow she maintains her aesthetic of dresses that love women while going a bit more masculine in shape and fabric.

      • demidaemon

I agree with the general thrust of your comment but disagree about #11, as that was one of the two dresses in here I did not like at all.

    • Janet B

Allison Williams should be wearing Carolina Herrera.

    • Shawn EH

Blue, brown and black are a hard color palette to make work.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Oh my god, love. Modern Princess all the way.

    • Kent Roby

There’s a lot to love here. Incidentally, I find dark tights/shoes incredibly chic; the model in all-black looks like she owns a couple of empires.

    • colorjunky

      waaaay 70’s

    • PeaceBang

I’m tucked up in bed with a beagle and a striped tabby cursing the winter and this collection just gave me such a beauty infusion, I think I can live. God bless Carolina H!!!

    • demidaemon

Beautiful. The only looks I’m not terribly fond of are 11 and 12, due to their awkward color/print blocking.

    • Vera

I love the coat in photo #2 so much that it took me a bit to realize the model is wearing a fez.

    • Valdri8

    • lrhoff

      Class with a capital “C”.

    • formerlyAnon

This is “mature” in a good way, I think, for Herrera. I usually like Herrera, and it’s no surprise that her collection would be the one that has me mildly enthused about geometric prints.

    • decormaven

One of those long red gowns is going to show up at the Academy Awards, I predict. Beautiful collection.
