Miss Lady isn’t fooling around any more. You are going to look at her, dammit.

We just don’t like when she goes Kidman-lite with her hair and makeup. But the dress is really great on her. She’s a gal who can handle that kind of color. We’re not super-crazy about the hem, but she picked the right shape of shoe to punctuate it. We just wish they were more of a sparkly champagne, rather than the skin color they are.

To recap: Great dress, pretty good shoes, someone else’s head.

Also: wouldn’t a necklace have been a lovely idea here? Some subtle little teardrop?

My eyes. They can’t stand the sagging top or the weird hip wrinkle (is that a flaw, or a feature??)

    • Kate Andrews

A feature, I’m guessing. Vivienne Westwood always does something a little weird.

    • 3boysful

I am with you. Totally. Droop to conceal your stomach droop?

      • kimmeister

It’s the lower abdomen cowl that bothers me. It looks like when people lose a bunch of weight really fast, and they end up with loose skin.

        • Anni

Or a kangaroo pouch. Who wouldn’t want a dress with a kangaroo pouch?

        • myandyleigh

I thought the view of it from the right side made it look like she needs to be wearing tightie whities instead of going commando ala John Hamm. The droop of the material is just really unfortunate from that angle. Female up top, male at the bottom. I don’t think that’s what she was going for…

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I think the hip wrinkle is a feature-but I could be wrong about that.

      • YoungSally

I agree — it’s a feature — but I think the flash on the cameras combined with the dress sheen and the angle where it is photographed from its “bad side” — make it look particularly odd in the photos.

        • what not

Yeah, I like the concept but the photo angle makes it look like a centered crotch-pocket instead of an asymmetric drape. And the fit is weird above the drape, besides. Too bad.

          • Donna Luder

My helpful brain just supplied the “Hot Pocket” commercial… and now we have a Crotch Pocket jingle.

    • alyce1213

Definitely a feature, draping repeated at the bust and hem.

    • I had an opportunity to go to a Vivienne Westwood Retrospective at the DeYoung in San Francisco, and her thing is deconstructed versions of construction techniques from 18th and 19th century dressmaking. They had some of her studies from early days and they could be in any costume drama (kind of like looking at Picasso’s early sketches versus later work.) A lot of her stuff has sags and swags and wrinkles in reference to bustles and other formerly de rigeur design elements. It’s a pretty intellectual way to design, and a lot easier to appreciate when you see the through-line in her whole body of work. Which doesn’t necessarily make it pretty on a red carpet 🙂

      • Jecca2244

Smartest thing I’ve heard all day : )

      • Thank you for this. I’ve always wondered about her particular line of reasoning, and now I have a very good explanation.

        • No problem! It was a great exhibit. My mom took me and very politely looked at everything and waited for me to read all of the cards, and the second we walked out of the hall she looked at me and said “I don’t get it” (hopelessly: hands up, open palms.)

      • Vtg Fashion Library

So I’m looking at this dress and wondering: is the double stick tape doing all the heavy lifting here, or is there construction underneath that it keeping it in place? Because I can’t imagine double stick being the winner here, but I can’t fathom the construction that would hold it up either. I’m truly flummoxed.

        • There’s a corset built into the dress. You can see some of the boning if you look at the obliques area on her abs.

  • Kate Andrews

I really don’t care for the shoes. They look extremely uncomfortable, and they aren’t cool enough to suffer through. Now the dress: right on!

    • Stella Zawistowski

Seriously. I like the dress, but all I can see is her poor contorted feet and I hope she got to sit down immediately after those photos were taken.

      • lundibleu

Yup, I’m with you both here – those shoes look hellishly uncomfortable and about two sizes too small. Her poor feet!

I love the dress though, but not 100% on the hair.

  • Jackie4g

The below the tummy drapery is tricky. In the 2nd picture it’s pooching out and making an odd shape, like a couple of walnuts under the fabric.

    • MikeW_Vegas

I’ts like her “tuck” came out.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

For this dress, and it is a good color for Adams, I would have gone with her American Hustle hair.

    • Oh my god, the perm would have been so fun with this.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

The perm would have elevated this look-given it a really fun, sexy vibe.

  • hughman

This is the dress a scorned woman wears on the cover of a Pulp Fiction novel from the 50s. “Draped Desires”.

    • “Do you like it when the curtains match the carpet?” Diane purred at her client who was in over his head with textile swatches, paint samples, and her.

    • mjude

      must read this novel!

    • dalgirl

  • rissa42210

Not sure that I’ve ever seen a pink dress look so severe.

  • SewingSiren

Loosen the hairstyle and you have a WERQ.

  • another_laura

Right on, T Lo. Trying to be Kidman doesn’t work for her. However, another Coulda Bin A Contenduh but for the hair and yeah, those shoes are bugging me.

    • decormaven

Looking at how tight that hair is pulled gives me a headache.

  • stubbornthoughts

That is her color pink. She looks happy in that, too.

    • Rhonda Shore

      Her rack looks amazing.

  • That subtle teardrop will comes when she snatches the Oscar. Or not. Either way.

    • Evan

      Not over Cate’s dead body

    • I hope not. She seems moderately endearing in interviews but I fear she’d pull a Sally Field with extra GOOP.

    • Sunraya

Cate would beat her with it. And I would pay to see it!!! (kidding – I may be a BK but I am a nonviolent BK!)

  • Let it out

Super pretty. I really like the shoes, even though they look painful as all git out.

  • French_Swede

Her hair need to be *free* of that tight top pony tail. It is an amazing color on her, one I wouldn’t think would look good on a red head.
Those shoes look like torture. Her earrings blend in with her hair … she should have worn something more sparkly.

  • julesj

Ouch, my feet hurt just looking at those pictures.

  • Oh some Jessica Rabbit hair would have been perfection here…

  • Jacob Bowen

Uncles, I’m sorry, but I think there are still signs that say, “Everyone entering this event must remove all necklaces and bracelets due to allergies to jewelry”. WHY, WHY starlets must we not accessorize anymore? As of late it’s been MUCH better than 2 months ago, but if you don’t want it, send it over to Illinois. I’ll rock the diamonds with my teacher outfits.

    • demidaemon

Seriously, if all the celebrity women are eschewing jewelry, let all the BKs have it and show it off in the workplace!

      • SierraDelta

YES! Why has no one suggested this before?!

  • JulieK

This dress is a case of extreme static cling. I just want to fix it for her. The color is fantastic though.

  • Nailed the hair and dress, dropped the ball on makeup and shoe color. Still, it’s an upward trajectory.

  • Danielle

That THING at the hip is killing me.

  • stlellen

I think this makes her look incredibly wide. Not particularly flattering.

  • Cheryl

I like all the weird draping, that looks like some tricky techniques going on there. The colour is spectacular on her, wishing I could wear it. I don’t mind the subtle makeup, but wish she’d done something moreish with the hair, but I kind of get not wanting to do too much with such a LOOK AT ME dress. The shoes are very pretty, but I bet she ditched them soon as she was out of camera range. Owwwwie!

  • Tracy_Flick

The hair is really unflattering, it makes the whole look very harsh. The dress is nice and she’s beautiful as ever, but the shoes make it look like the stiletto heels grew out of her feet with a weird scaly texture. Like some kind of genetically modified toenail. Sorry, I had to say it.

  • Kristina Sadowski

The bra strap kills this look for me.

  • Judy_S

Dress, that is your girl. But agreed about the need for move vavoom above the shoulders.

  • jilly_d

Love this dress on her, the shoes are acceptable, and yes a necklace or more pronounced earring is called for. But that is the worst hair she has ever had on the RC.

    • JillSpill

I know! It’s sooo tight…it’s giving me a headache just looking at her.

      • decormaven

Should have scrolled further before I replied. That hair is tightened to the nth.

    • Sofia Bentivoglio

the hair is truly awful. totally unflattering ruins everything else.

  • Alyssa

I think she should wear more Vivienne Westwood…it suits her retro-glam vibe. But yes, this totally needed a necklace and different hair/makeup.

  • Missy

I really, really dislike the crotch-pooch. I mean, I suppose you could set your keys in there for a minute if you needed to…

…who am I kidding? Celebrities don’t need *keys*.

  • MilaXX

I don’t like this on her. I’ve never seen a Vivienne Westwood dress or a hot pink dress look so bland. It’s like a living Barbie.

  • MaggieMae

The dress color is radiant and so strong! She needs bold make-up to match. Burn the shoes, Amy. Please.

  • RussellH88

The little sag around the stomach almost looks like this is a maternity dress or something and she’s lacking the baby bulge to will it out.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

That dress is holding on for dear life.

  • Erica

Oh, Amy. The color looks great on you, your rack looks amazing, but why hide your hair? You have glorious hair. It might even be called your thing. But you’re wearing it here like you haven’t washed it for a few days but plan to do so as soon as you run those errands that have been piling up. Set it free, girl.

  • heartbot

The sad sagginess on the front of the dress reminds me of my belly after my daughter was born.

  • majorbedhead

My mother used to scrape my hair into a tight, tight ponytail like that when I was a little girl. It always gave me a headache.

I find that neckline very unflattering on her. It’s giving her linebacker shoulders.

    • dalgirl

You can see it falling down a little on her right arm.

  • I want to like it, but I can’t get behind the weird saggy part in the front. It looks like a non-pregnant person trying to wear a maternity dress. The color is fab, though. Love the earrings.

  • Belvane

A little necklace for sure. I always think off the shoulder is so much more flattering than just plain old strapless. The shoulders are framed so beautifully.

  • jw_ny

That draping at her midsection is so off and unflattering, as well whatever undergarments she has on under are causing lines at her abdomen…it took me some time to even focus elsewhere, and when I did..oh..that hair…oh…those shoes…

  • crash1212

I so love how Ms. Westwood drapes. This is a beautiful dress and Amy looks great in it. Neck down – nicely done. Neck up – WTF? That hairstyle is NOT her friend.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The hair is just painful in more ways than one. Hate the shoes. Tired of saying I hate people’s shoes. But I do!

  • filmcricket

I loathe that Westwood hem, I just loathe it. Sigh. Otherwise – colour: good, hair: too tight, skin: gorgeous, cleavage: fantastic. Can’t wait to see what she turns up in on Sunday.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I don’t really like the bunchy fabric at the hip, but otherwise, I love the dress. But someone either really messed up her makeup or didn’t let her get any sleep!

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

A cool dress to wear if you just stand perfectly still.

  • greyhoundgirl

If the dress didn’t look like it was about to slide off of her I’d love it. The shoes are tortuous and should be banned.

  • Jecca2244

question, does she have naturally curly or wavy hair? Her hair straightened tends to look like my sister’s does when she flat irons it and she has curls.

  • Sally Spannagle

The slicked hair makes her appear larger than she is – broader shoulders and all bare up top. No.

  • Trickytrisha

Love the color on her. But that’s all.

  • bertkeeter

Not too crazy about that “droopy” draping over tummy….

  • Stefan Hurray

I don’t know – while I see the similarity to Kidman I think the reason is she looks like a freaking MOVIE STAR. Chic, polished, and put together. Of course, it’s not a movie premier or anything but when you’re a STAR is there any such thing as over-dressed?

  • teensmom99

I need that dress. And I need the occasion to wear it to.

  • E. D.

Too bad about the hem. Otherwise I like it.

  • Imasewsure

Dress is good but agreed on all of our uncles’ talking points… could have been so much better

  • KT

Droopy vadge, toga hem, sister wife hair. Nice tits, though.

  • livesarah

The fit is awful. She looks like pudding.

  • uprightcitizen

Someone actually sort of looks good in that neckline and draped peplum-y thing that Vivienne Westwood is so enamored of. HBC wears it a lot and it looks like a Victorian costume on her. But it looks modern enough and flattering enough on Amy Adams that it’s kind of surprising. The color definitely makes it look modern, too. That pink is never going to look 19th century. Shame then, that the lining is visible in every shot that shows her right arm. Kind of ruins it.

As to her looking like Nicole Kidman, I’m not sure what she’s supposed to do about that. While Kidman’s features are definitely finer (and more, um, surgically arranged), you’re right that there’s a resemblance. But can you imagine trying to filter every makeup and hairstyle decision with “Is this going to make me look too much like Nicole Kidman”? As if Kidman owns those things? That would be annoying as hell … and it’s not like anyone is going to mistake one for the other. In fact, Adams has been making two or three movies for every one Kidman has made for a few years now.

    • Corsetmaker

Think it’s partly the colour, partly the fabric. A lot of those dresses are crisper, dupion etc. That looks more like a silk crepe so it’s working better on the drapes.

  • Lex

I actually think she looks TERRIBLE in that color- it clashes with her red hair and then her face is so blah and pale that she looks washed out. The shoes blow too– tragically boring. The dress is nice, I just don’t think it flatters her skin tone or else that she needs more of a contrast in her makeup- something to bring her face to life!

  • Leah Elzinga

BIG HAIR. For the love of Pete, how is that not obvious. A fabulous blowout, or event better a whack of gorgeous waves and curls. If she wants to go all Kidman, fine. Take present-day Kidman fashion, and combine it with her pre-filler face and hair. THAT would be lovely. Even better would be if NK herself took that on, but we all know that’s never going to happen.

  • sagecreek

Love the dress, hate the hair…my sainted mum used to call that style “peeled onion”.

  • enchanted216

No. I don’t think the color suits her, and the neckline is not in any way flattering on this beautiful girl.

  • SophieCollier

It’s surely the cameras, but she looks so pale in that intense pink that all I really see is a dress floating on a ghost.

  • yethica

This thing needs more glitter. Some sparkly Louboutins and maybe some big hair. Hell…. if you’re gonna go for redhead Barbie JUST DO IT. Enough of this halfway “I’m trying to look classy” nonsense. YOUR DRESS IS HOT PINK. Need I say more?

  • Laylalola

Wow, I thought the dress looks awful on her with her coloring, and that her hair really needs to be in a different style with the dress. She doesn’t look finished at all or something.

  • poorellensmith

That hair is a real missed opportunity.

  • Wow! It’s a wow!

  • She lost me with the triple swag drapes, but the color is nice. Now if she can only stop emulating Nicole, we’d be getting somewhere.

  • FeminineLipstique

I can’t really get into necklines like that, where the boobs look like they’re Livin’ on a Prayer. Ohhhh, she’s halfway there… Hair’s too severe.

  • quiltrx

Love pretty much any VW dress. Great on her. Now go redo your hair, darling.

  • icm

vavavavoom!, great colour! beautiful décolletage ,however the puckers and crinkles around her lady garden are most disconcerting.

  • Jan Crews

So much better than all the to-the-navel Vs she’s been sporting lately!

  • Gatto Nero

Yet more random draping and puckering from Ms. Westwood.
    The hair is tragic.

  • Pablo

HATE the dress, it makes her look huge

  • Sunraya

I don’t like the bodice. It seems weird. And I doubt she is going to win.

  • ashtangajunkie

I would like this more without the weird draping at the hip. Also, hair and makeup need some serious zhushing.

  • golden_valley

I think that peeled back hair style is supposed to reduce the contrast of her red hair and Barbie pink dress. If she wore the hair to frame her face in the way that she always looks best, you’d see that the colors don’t go well together.

The neckline cries out for a necklace…and some heavy duty tape to make sure it doesn’t slide down any further.

Those stilettos…OMG shoe designers should have to wear their own designs while standing up for 3 hours at a time. It’s like being en pointe for that time…not good for the feet, knees or back.

  • OffToSeeHim

That’s not going “80’s bridesmaid” for anybody else? OK, just me then!

  • DebbieLovesShoes

Not to be crude, but that pouch on the front looks like a deflated tummy after a really-big baby’s been delivered. Really big. Huge.

  • demidaemon

I can’t okay the dress, mostly due to the weird pleats around the waist/crotch. Can’t really see anything else.
