I really like the dress, but I HATE that makeup.

  • Danielle

It’s a blessed step away from the 70’s disco queen look she’s been favoring, but I can’t with that lipstick.

  • KinoEye

“There’s something about this that’s so black. It’s like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.”

    • Mrs. Julien

I think, like you’re, like rationalizing this whole thing like into something you did on on purpose.

    • bassfemme

Always love a good Spinal Tap reference!!

    • decormaven

“So it’s just gonna be all black?
      – Simple, beautiful, classic.
It does look like black leather.
You can see yourself in both sides.”

      • KinoEye

        “It’s like a black mirror.”

  • Seriously weird… top? That fabric blocking doesn’t make any sense.

    • SugarSnap108

It’s so random, especially with that inexplicable collar.

    • Trent

But that’s what I LOVE about the top! The sheer blocking is so architectural and geometric, as opposed to peek-a-boo “sexiness.”

You know, if anyone had told me ten years ago that I would consistently like Posh Spice’s fashion designs, I would have laughed in their face…

  • Alyssa

I might be in the minority here, but I love her makeup…mostly because it’s so different for her. She looks like how I picture a vampire queen…very dark & sultry sexy. And I love her earrings.

    • jilly_d

I like it too. It’s a real step out of the box for her, and her skin looks dynamite.

    • Nimith

I’m so bored of the nude/clean look that I’m ready to stand up an applaud whenever a starlet goes for darker tones. You’re wearing makeup, we all know you’re wearing makeup, why go to all the time and effort to look like you’re not? Blue lips and red eyeshadow for all!

    • filmcricket

      I like it too.

    • That deep plum seems very of the moment, at least from what I’ve seen the dealers at Sephora pushing. 🙂 I think it can be dramatic in all the right ways if done right. It looks gorgeous on her here.

  • laura

The styling is too severe for my taste. The shellacked hair, the dark lips and nails, one too many rings….coupled with a collar and bib on a skin tight dress. It’s…odd. Earrings are nice, though.

    • ballerinawithagun

I agree, way too severe. Almost as if she is playing the PART of Victoria Beckham here. Amy Adams has such fabulous hair. Why doesn’t she show it off???

      • NBG

Because then people rip her for being 70s or 50’s or whatever decade they don’t think works for her.

        • jilly_d

Ding ding! We have a winner.

      • sweetestsith

She wears it down a lot, but she also has a fabulous face and its nice to see it front and center sometimes. Besides, if she always wore her hair down people would start complaining about that. It’s always something!

I’m not wild about the collar here, but I love the look overall. She looks glamorous and striking.

    • gabbilevy

Amen, sister. If she’d worn her hair loose, this could have been spectacular.

  • Musicologie

In the third picture (the close-up of her face), she reminds me of Laura Bennett. I think it’s the hair more than anything, and I actually really like this hair style.

I think this is a move in the right direction for her (in that it’s not Kid Kidman), but I’m not sold on that top. I like the idea of something so geometrical, but perhaps it’s the collar that annoys.

    • DaringMiss

You are right on then money with the Laura Bennett reference!

    • demidaemon

So right! Except it lacks Laura’s signature wit.

  • @Biting Panda

Well, well, aren’t we quite the dark vixen?
On the plus side, I’m happy to see her working something that has zero reference to the 70s. But that’s about all I have on the positive end of things.
I have mixed emotions on the make up and I feel like the collared bib is is a big ol’ no.

    • KinoEye

I think the collared bib could work for her outside of this dress and RC setting. It could be a cute look for going out grocery shopping, a blouse paired with jeans and flats or something. But something about it just reads as too casual for this dress, I think.

  • clatie

I love it! Especially because she usually defaults to something overwhelming. Old fashioned screen siren makeup works really well on her and well with simple lines of outfit. Attagirl!

  • Judy_S

I noticed her in this last night. I really like it.

  • I love Solange Azagury Partridge, and if I were let loose in her store these are not the pieces I would pick.

  • Well, I like it. I think she looks fierce.

  • luludexter

I love her makeup although I wish the red lips weren’t quite so glossy… The top on that dress is awkward. It could have been simpler and the elegance factor would have gone way up. The assymetry under the collar is distracting from her beautiful face. I also really like the hair and the side chignon.

  • MilaXX

I think I like dark Amy. It’s head and shoulders above those 70’s inspired looks she’s been trying to make happen.

  • AmeliaEve

That fussy little collar is a Peggy Olsen special. I do like the shape of the dress, though. That lipstick color is so wrong for her. It’s a neat trick to make a redhead look sallow.

  • Carleenml

Top pic brought Victor Victoria immediately to mind. But her body is slammin’, no doubt about it.

  • Jessica Freeman

Its interesting because the first shot is the only one that makes me hate the lipstick color. I think I like this…?

  • ojosazules

    She looks pretty fabulous.

  • marlie

Great hair, interesting dress, but girl, that is NOT your lipstick. It’s not even the color that’s not working for me, but whatever the lipstick is made of. That semi-gloss looks like it’s giving her uneven coverage or something.

  • crash1212

I truly love that dress and think it was an interesting choice for Amy. I’ve been quite tired looking at her sternum of late. I love the styling choices. This is fabulous actually – well except for the lip color…which normally I wouldn’t kvetch about, but since it’s the only pop of color, it really does matter. I think red was most def the way to go, but maybe not that red in that “format”. Something is amiss with the shininess.

  • ovarB

Not going to nitpick the details because over all she looks polished and ready for the RC!

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

It’s very different for her. Overall, I really like it with the exception of the too dark lip, and missing accessories. She or her gays need to get over the accessory fear.

  • Cheryl

It’s not so much that I love this look, it’s more that I’m sooooo happy to see her out of that freaking ugly disco crap, she’s been wearing. It was bad enough looking at it in the movie, but she kept wearing that awful stuff at so many events. I’ll be the weirdo that likes the lipstick.

  • jw_ny

Her hair and makeup are on the severe side (1st pic made me think of Robert Palmer’s backup dancers), but overall I like the look, especially since she’s not bearing her sternum for a change. 🙂

  • PeaceBang

Hey Amy, if you get your people to show me how to do my hair that way, I’ll buy you a new lipstick.

  • d4divine

Morticia had a best friend! Who knew?!

  • nannypoo

I love the dress and hair but the makeup adds about 20 years.

  • Diego!

Miss Amy! What a great surprise!!! She looks STUNNING! She should consider switching to Victoria Beckham as her new fashion brand to wear on the RC.

  • Janet B

Very dramatic and a nice change of pace.

  • sagecreek

Oh, it’s a fine look, but it’s way too channeling Nicole Kidman for me. Amy, develop your own look, honey!

  • Tracy_Flick

I might quibble with the details, but it’s just so nice to see a ladystar who puts in the effort. She may not always look perfect but she never looks like it’s just a hideous burden to be there and she couldn’t be bothered to do any more than roll out of bed.

  • Sally Spannagle

I feel like this is more her style than the 70s sexpot/bad girl looks she’s always toying with.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I think she looks fabulous. Now HER, I would do or be.

  • bluefish

Very Miss Pettigrew and also very Amer. Hustle. I like it and I give her a break on the overall. She was much affected, by all accounts, by the death of Phillip Seymour Hoffmann. I like the dress. Very 70s throwback and appropriate to American Hustle. I feel sad as hell too. Black a good choice and the big make-up gives her a mask.

  • WoodnSalt

This look makes me sad. It’s too tight though the hips (and she’s tiny) and the bodice, neckline, and makeup are so severe, it just completely overpowers her; not to mention that apparently no one on her team could be bothered to hem it properly. Amy, send this dress back to Ms. Beckham and get yourself a look that shows off your beautiful self.

  • Guest

    Am I crazy

  • taews

Is her dress too long? Half the time I never see the shoes on these red carpets because the dresses are dragging on the floor. Maybe this is the fashion?

  • Dagney

I like the overall general effect, but the top section of the dress is just weird.

  • melanie0866

    Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria

  • janierainie

I like this, but it looks like someone said, “Okay, Victoria Beckham dress, let’s style her to look like Vicky.” Does anyone else see that?

    • demidaemon

YES. And that is exactly the problem. Amy rarely comes out styled like “Amy.”

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

That is serously fierce. I adore her.

  • bravobravp

    Pilgrim chic!

  • Gatto Nero

I am surprised to find myself liking this on her, head to toe. I wouldn’t have thought she could pull off something so dark (in color and emotional tone).
The only thing I would do differently is go for a matte red lip instead of the glossy berry.

  • julnyes

I actually quite like this whole look.

  • AzSportsGirl

That is some exquisitely combed and parted hair. Not a flyaway in sight while retaining shine and volume. The collar on the top annoys me as much as Brad’s pointy things on his tux. I think maybe a banded collar and shoulder trim to match the hem on the top would add a nice finish and lengthen her neck?

  • Akemi

So, are you not allowed to smile when you’re wearing Victoria Beckham’s clothes or what?

  • Lilyana_F

Love that dress! Hair and make-up are bringing the drama too.She looks fierce and she knows it.

  • amf0001

it looks like something Nicole Kidman could have worn (or still wear) it has that kind of vibe for me.

  • Jacob Bowen

Let’s try this ONE MORE TIME Amy! This was SOOOO close! Just let the hair down and I will yell “(Sex) Bombs away!”

  • icm

Lovin all these retro “Grace Kelly like” Hollywood starlet hairstyles. Throwback to the old glamour days of tinseltown.

  • Claudia Berry

    Hate the pose.

  • murt

I love the dress and hair but the makeup lets the look down a bit – she needed a heavier, more ‘flawless’ base. The other thing I would say is that the dress is slightly too tight across the hips and slightly too long.

  • demidaemon

I’m not loving this at all. The silhouette is weird–too blousey on top and too tight on the bottom. Not loving the make-up, which is all “LIPS,” or the hair. It goes way too severe.

  • quiltrx

I like this a lot. A lighter lip shade would have made it just about perfect in my book.

  • Imasewsure

It’s a great look but a little too harsh
