Zosia Mamet in Saint Laurent at the “Girls” Premiere

Posted on January 07, 2014

Bless them, the Girls girls really do seem to be trying for this one. Maybe the chorus of bitching finally got to them. Maybe trolling the red carpet just got boring.

Zosia Mamet attends the ‘Girls’ season three premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City in a Saint Laurent dress and pumps.

This is okay-bordering-on-good. When we said Lena’s look “could be worse,” that was pretty much as high a compliment as we could muster, but here, we can honestly say she didn’t get anything particularly wrong. The jewelry is poorly coordinated and most of it isn’t to our taste, and the dress really couldn’t be any plainer, but she’s put together and there was clear effort to make herself venue-appropriate and picture-ready. Our take on the simple classic LBD would’ve gone differently, but she looks very pleased with herself and that matters most. Love the shoes. Can’t hate. Attagirl.

Also, while we totally get that it’s wrong to go around telling people in their daily lives to smile, we have to point out that it does a world of good when you’re posing for pictures, especially when you’re a celebrity.

I love the shoes and I especially love the bracelet on her left hand. She looks cold (no wonder) and slightly uncomfortable, but it’s a vast improvement. Yay.

    • WendyD

She showered!! And brushed her hair! It’s a 2014 miracle!

    • Shug

Love the shoes, love the YSL graphic cuff. Would not turn down that LBD, either.

      • SportifLateBoomer

Ah, thanks, could not figure out that cuff! I love it too.

    • hughman

She always looks like she’s posing for a 4th grade class pic to me. “I AM PROUD TO BE A HALL MONITOR.”

      • decormaven

This is why I will always love you! Never, ever change.

        • NYCGlamourpuss

Same here! I want a tee shirt that says “I (heart)” and then a picture of Hughman on it.

          • marlie

            I’d buy one!

          • decormaven

I’d snap one of those up in a skinny minute.

    • RL McGruder

WANT that YSL cuff. And, she looks good!

    • @Biting Panda

      Attagirl, indeed.

    • boweryboy

It’s refreshing that she’s smiling. She usually looks like either she smelled a fart or she’s pissed at the world.

    • lexilexi

For her, it’s practically a werq.

      • Diego!

        Word.

    • Anathema_Device

The cuff and shoes are great. I don’t mind that they are matchy. The dress is nice. Her pose is hilarious.

      • Spreecord

That is the pose of a woman who is convinced her dress is going to hike up and flash the world her magic berry patch if she so much as breaths.

        • marlie

Now I have to work “magic berry patch” in a conversation this week.

    • Diego!

I think she looks gorgeous!!! BRAVO! She hired the right stylist this time. Congratulations, gurl!

    • ShaoLinKitten

My only criticism is that her hair is the epitome of two-tone cocker spaniel hair. Other than that, wow, she really has improved quite a bit. This makes me wonder if her previous gaffes truly were the result of lack of fashion advice and not deliberate flouting of standards of beauty.

    • Snailstsichr

I am so relieved to see her looking happy.

    • Rhonda Shore

She looks good and it’s a relief to see her smile! It really does make a huge difference.

    • Lori

I think this may be the best she’s every looked on a red carpet. Nothing is hurting my eyes, the shoes are kind if great and the smile is terrific and no part of her looks miserable to be there. Good job!

    • teensmom99

Zosia does look good with a smile. Wow. And I’m wondering if the better dressing is part of growing up. Next thing to do is to hook her and Lena up with a dermatologist to remove those distracting tats. I like the shoes but the tats just bring them down.

      • Sarah

The tats are here to stay. A massive amount of people have them, and they are just going to get older, and still have them. In fact, I’d venture that they are so ubiquitous that there will be a backlash of non-tattooed kids coming up any time now, so you might get your wish with the next generation? But really, she can’t take them off and on like an accessory, so is it fair to judge her shoes in contrast to them?

        • NinaBoo

Exactly. With Ms. Mamet here, I had to scroll back up to see her ink. Hadn’t noticed it in my first pass, probably because it is ubiquitous.

        • marlie

Yeah, the tattoos fall under the list of things that can’t be changed, so I won’t criticize them.

    • Sarah

Nice shoes! I can’t believe I like something Zosia “Boobstache” Mamet would wear, but they are cool. And yeah, she looks so much better with a smile. *Note to self: stop looking surly in photos…

    • nannypoo

She looks like she’s smiling while facing a firing squad, but this is the first time I’ve seen her smile. She looks pretty.

    • Tracy_Flick

She looks cute. But I think she may have learned how to pose from Mary Katherine Gallagher.

      • @Biting Panda

        supahstah!

    • Nika E

I think she looks extremely uncomfortable, like she’s doing that nervous laugh type of thing. Her shoulders are freaking up to her ear, her body language makes her look odd here to me. She doesn’t look so much happy to me she looks like she was totally freaking out.

      • marlie

At least she doesn’t look angry. It’s an improvement.

    • Linzenberg

I quite like how her jewelry choices seem to be riffing on her tattoos. They’re a bit of a jumble, but that works for her rich-hipster style She and Lena still need to visit Auntie RuPaul for some serious posing lessons, but this is an attagirl if I ever saw one.

    • Town

Why is she standing hunched up against the wall as if she’s preparing for a firing squad? Bless her heart.

    • tereliz

She’s giving good face. As far as LBDs go, this one is just okay to me. It doesn’t seem to fit right in the bust. The shoes are KILLAH though and I would cut a runway full of bitches for that vintage YSL cuff.

      • marlie

You’re right about the bust… it looks like she added in a modesty-safety-pin to hold it closed, just as we mere mortals do.

    • Blair Sylvester

Isn’t it sort of the natural progression of people that weren’t really famous before they landed a buzzed about tv series that they start out really rough looking and get increasingly polished as time goes on? I think if you look back at pictures of the last famous hbo female foursome that they started out looking pretty rough on red carpets but as the loaners and stylists and makeup artists they were given access to got better there looks became more polished.

    • Cheryl

What’s with the Girls, actors and their horrid posture? Hate that bracelet, not a fan of wearing logos, especially as huge as that one is.

    • PeggyOC

The outfit is made by the fact that she not only doesn’t have her customary scowl, she’s honestly and truly smiling. It transforms her.

    • Anna_Cecilia

She looks cute. On her, a simple LBD is actually a relief.

    • clatie

I think she looks great! She is someone who dresses for interest, not prettiness. I get it – I was a young person who was trying to be different once, too. Actually, I wish more people took chances with their looks like she does. You could never accuse her of being predictable, can you? Red carpets are SO predictable now.

    • alyce1213

The nice LBD did it’s job, she’s well-accessorized and beautifully shod, her hair’s clean and curling-ironed, and she smiling.
      So yes, Attagirl!

    • Shawn EH

      The missing fourth Haim sister.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She looks as though she thinks someone is trying to kill her but she has to act natural.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

This direction. Keep going in it.

    • Carolyne

I agree that it’s pretty good for her, but are those some sort of puffy, high capped sleeves or does she need to relax before there’s a collision between her shoulders and her ears?

    • Janet B

Not a special LBD, but serviceable. The shoes on the other hand are pretty special.

    • barbarienne

The Girls girls need to hire a coach to teach them how to stand with confidence on the runway. Smiles help, but not looking hunched up or over also helps.

    • Patrick Cleary

Very cute! She looks like she’s getting ready to face the firing squad. Relax! You’re a famous person!

    • GeoDiva

Can someone give her a brush?

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Sorry Zosh…but the auditions for The Nutcracker “March of the Tin Soldiers” bit were in November.

    • marlie

If it’s her job to be at an even and not look miserable, then yes, it IS her job to smile. But it makes her look 1000 times better, too!

The dress is as basic as it can be. The shoes are awesome, but the rest of the jewelry is just “alright.” The hair is completely undone, but her makeup looks good. Overall, this warrants a “not bad” from me.

    • ConnieBV

She looks uncomfortable but looks great. I wish she would have put her hair up (softly) so you could tell it’s the shoulders of the dress, not obnoxious hunching.

    • jay

I am this close to loving it but the greasy-root look is killing me. It looks like she put product in her hair and parted it while it was still wet, and then just left it that way. Like I did in junior high. I just wanna rake my fingers through the roots and floof it a little. God, I’ve become my mother.

    • MilaXX

If she was standing/posing a bit better and took off a good 70% of that jewelry this isn’t a bad look. Shoes are actually pretty fierce.

    • anotherkate

She looks nice. And she has a really, really CUTE smile, so deploying it is extra nice to see. Well played, and I really like the shoes.

    • stubbornthoughts

The only thing bugging me is her hair. Looks like she had it in a bun for a few days and then let it out in the limo.

    • Coleen

I would wax her eyebrows off for a chance at those shoes.

    • Chaiaiai

Hmm. I feel like every 3rd person here in Portland has a variation on her foot tattoo.

Her hair is shiny. Good girl.

    • Trickytrisha

Bless her heart, she did make an effort. And it paid off. Brava.

    • Linzenberg

Re: her posture, I just realized . . . these pictures were taken last night. In Manhattan. Where it felt like 17 degrees. If this step and repeat was outside, I’m willing to give her and Lena passes on their frigid (pun intended) posture. I’m freezing and I’m wearing my supa-fierce pink fleece pajama bottoms with matching Scotty dog bathrobe INDOORS. LBDs and sparkly sleeveless gowns don’t offer much protection.

      • marlie

If the step and repeat was held outside last night, then the organizers were MORONS. I didn’t even want to take my trash out last night. But, just for the sake of being contrary, Allison Williams and Anna Chlumsky didn’t look like they were freezing their assess off, and LD & ZM almost always stand like this on the red carpet.

        • Linzenberg

These are all things that are true. I’m trying to be a kinder, gentler kitten for this New Year . . . Bittersweet rather than just bitter. ;-)

    • bitchybitchybitchy

the LBD is very safe, but it’s a good change from some of Zosia’s other RC looks. I like the shoes, and see, honey, when you smile, it makes such a difference-giving her a thumb’s up.

    • sagecreek

It would kill her to get her hair done?

    • Imasewsure

Seriously this is great (for her). ATTAGURL… plain is ok for this one!!

    • Kent Roby

I’m sobbing into my iced tea over this plain LBD being considered RC-worthy. I’m in serious need of some Guo Pei to get me out of my funk.

    • kimmeister

Pssst, Lena, this dress has the strong shoulders and neckline that you need. Get a similar dress STAT!

    • MoHub

The shoes appear to be at least three sizes too big.

    • twigg

I hope this event was indoors…because it is COLD at night in NYC right now.

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

Clearly, she was forced at gunpoint to wear a dress that isn’t crazy. Just look at her body language! Poor girl is scared for her life!

Anyway, the YSL bracelet is tacky but the shoes are fab.

    • demidaemon

Wow, she looks suspiciously good here. I assume one of three things happened: 1) HBO or a related executive told her to shape the fuck up. 2) She got bored with wearing ugly clothes. 3) This is the calm before the storm.

      Personally, I’m going with 3.

    • lynnlee

Everything is cute but her hair. I don’t understand that hair. It looks too flat and greasy on top. Not flattering at all,

    • Pterodactyl111

      Those shoes are killer.

    • Kelly

I honestly think this is the first time I’ve ever seen her smile. Looks good! Otherwise, the bodice is ill-fitting, and the hair is a mess. And why is she standing like a person who’s been it with a full body-bind hex?

    • quiltrx

The shoes and cuff are giving me life. Nice to see her smile, too.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

love that cuff, and her makeup and hair are gor-juss!

    • judybrowni

      But why is she shrugging?
